Important for Bolivian citizens

India requires a valid yellow-fever vaccination certificate from travellers arriving from Bolivia. Without one you can be quarantined on arrival for up to six days, whatever visa you hold. The certificate is only valid from ten days after vaccination.

Overview

The India eVisa for Bolivian citizens

Bolivia is landlocked and its main airports sit at high altitude, which shapes the journey: every routing to India involves at least two connections through São Paulo, Lima, Bogotá or Panama City and then Europe or the Gulf. Total travel time runs 28 to 34 hours.

The commercial dimension is growing — India has an interest in Bolivian lithium, and Indian pharmaceutical and vehicle manufacturers have a presence — but most Bolivian travel to India is long-form leisure and spiritual travel.

Every Bolivian citizen needs a visa granted before departure. There is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival. The eVisa is an electronic authorisation issued by the Government of India, linked to your passport number, with no stamp and no appointment. Bolivian passport holders receive up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa.

Eligibility

Do Bolivian citizens need a visa for India?

Yes. India extends visa-free entry only to Nepal and Bhutan, and Visa on Arrival only to Japanese, South Korean and Emirati nationals. Bolivian citizens must hold an approved visa before boarding, and because every routing involves connections, the check can happen at La Paz or Santa Cruz, at a hub, or both.

Choose the category by purpose. Tourism, sightseeing, visiting friends, and yoga or meditation retreats fall under the tourist eVisa. Meetings, trade fairs, minerals negotiation and supplier visits require the business eVisa. Hospital treatment requires the medical eVisa. Employment, journalism, academic research and long-term study are outside the eVisa scheme and need a regular visa from an Indian mission.

Residents of Bolivia who are not Bolivian citizens apply on the nationality of their passport, with that country's fees, entitlements and stay limits.

Stay & validity

How long can Bolivian citizens stay in India?

Bolivian citizens are permitted up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows double entry, with its 30 days counted from your arrival date. The one-year and five-year versions are multiple-entry, and their validity begins on the date the Indian government grants the application.

Ninety days is ample for the kind of trip that justifies a 30-hour journey. The eVisa cannot be extended from inside India, so build the full plan before you submit.

The grant-date rule matters given how far ahead a trip of this length is booked. Applying six months out spends half a one-year eVisa; apply three to four weeks before you fly.

The business eVisa allows up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window. The medical eVisa gives 60 days from first entry with triple entry.

Requirements

India eVisa requirements for Bolivian citizens

Everything Bolivian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality or visa type.

Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date

Recent passport-style photograph — square format, plain white background, full face visible, no shadows and no headwear other than for religious reasons

A valid credit or debit card to pay the government fee and service charge

Your return or onward ticket details, or at minimum your intended departure date

The address where you will be staying for your first night in India

Specific to Bolivian passport holders

  • A regular Bolivian passport valid at least six months beyond your arrival date, with two or more blank pages
  • A valid yellow-fever vaccination certificate — required for entry, and valid only from ten days after vaccination
  • Both surnames entered exactly as printed on the passport — primer apellido and segundo apellido, in that order
  • Accents and ñ handled consistently: your passport's machine-readable zone renders ñ as N and strips accents
  • A square digital photograph on a plain white background with your full face visible
  • A clear colour scan of the passport bio-data page
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international payments, as the fee is charged in USD
  • Your first night's address in India and your onward or return flight details

Processing times and when to apply

Standard processing takes 48 to 72 hours and express handling 24 to 48 hours. Both are business-day estimates, and Indian public holidays — numerous and often state-specific — extend them.

Apply at least two weeks before departure. The yellow-fever certificate needs ten days to become valid and is a real long lead item. Bolivian itineraries involve multiple connections, frequently on separate tickets, so a visa problem found late is expensive to unwind.

Mandatory from October 2025

You also need the India e-Arrival Card

Separate from your eVisa, every foreign national entering India must complete the digital e-Arrival Card before boarding. It replaces the old paper disembarkation form and is required on every single visit, whatever visa you hold.

Getting there

Flying to India from Bolivia

Bolivia is landlocked and every routing to India involves at least two connections through São Paulo, Lima, Bogotá or Panama City and then Europe or the Gulf. Total travel times run 28 to 34 hours.

  • La Paz (LPB) or Santa Cruz (VVI) — Delhi or Mumbai via São Paulo and then Doha, Dubai or Addis Ababa
  • Santa Cruz (VVI) — Delhi via Madrid, often the most convenient European option
  • La Paz (LPB) — via Lima, Bogotá or Panama City and then a European or Gulf hub
  • Routings via the United States require a US visa or ESTA even for a connection
  • Santa Cruz generally has better long-haul feed than La Paz

Best time to go

When to travel from Bolivia

October to March is India's dry season and the best window for the classic circuits. For Bolivian travellers this overlaps with the summer holidays, the natural window for a trip long enough to justify the journey.

The Bolivian winter, June to August, coincides with the Indian monsoon and the pre-monsoon heat, though July and August are the best months for Ladakh and the Spiti Valley.

Avoid the northern plains in May and June, when temperatures exceed 45°C. India is 9.5 hours ahead of Bolivian time, and with 30 hours in transit across multiple connections you will arrive substantially displaced. Plan a genuine rest day.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Bolivian citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Bolivia — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Travelling without a valid yellow-fever certificate

India requires proof of yellow-fever vaccination from travellers arriving from Bolivia, and without it you can be quarantined on arrival for up to six days regardless of your visa. The certificate is only valid from ten days after vaccination.

Two surnames merged, reordered or dropped

Bolivian passports carry a paternal and a maternal surname, and both belong in the surname field, in the printed order, without merging or hyphenating. Using only the primer apellido creates a mismatch that Indian immigration will pick up.

Routing via the United States without a US visa

A US connection requires a US visa or ESTA even if you never leave the airport, and your India eVisa says nothing about it. On a journey already involving two or three connections, route via São Paulo and the Gulf, or via Madrid, if you do not hold one.

Not pricing Santa Cruz as the departure point

Practical rather than procedural. Santa Cruz generally has better long-haul feed than La Paz, and on a 30-hour journey that can mean one fewer connection. Worth pricing both.

Applying as soon as flights are booked

On one-year and five-year visas, validity runs from the grant date. A trip of this length is booked many months ahead; applying at the same time throws away most of the visa.

Photo rejected on technical grounds

By far the most common cause of delay. The photograph must be square, on a plain white background, with your full face visible and no shadow behind your head. Cropped selfies and phone photos taken against a cream wall are routinely bounced back.

Passport scan unreadable

Glare across the machine-readable zone, a cut-off corner, or a scan where the passport number is blurred will stall the application. Photograph the page flat, in daylight, with no flash.

Applying too close to departure

The eVisa must be granted before you fly, and airlines check it at the gate. Applications submitted the night before a flight leave no room for a document re-upload.

Conditions

India eVisa rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by the Government of India and do not vary by nationality. They are worth reading before you book, because two of them — the port-of-entry rule and the restricted-areas rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

Your passport must be valid for six months

Validity is measured from your date of arrival in India, not from the date you apply. You also need at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

Enter through a designated eVisa port only

The India eVisa is accepted at India's designated eVisa airports and authorised seaports. It cannot be used to cross a land border, so overland arrivals from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh or Pakistan need a different visa.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own eVisa and their own passport, including infants and children. Children cannot be added to a parent's application.

Restricted and Protected Areas need a separate permit

An eVisa does not grant access to Protected Areas, Restricted Areas or Cantonment Areas. Parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep require a Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit in addition to your visa.

The eVisa is non-extendable and non-convertible

You cannot extend an eVisa from inside India or convert it into another visa category. If your plans change, you must leave and apply again.

Standard passports only

Diplomatic, official and service passports are not eligible for the eVisa route, and neither are international travel documents or refugee travel documents.

Consular services

Indian missions in Bolivia

The Indian mission serving Bolivia is not involved in eVisa applications, which are handled entirely online. It covers what the eVisa cannot: employment, journalism, research and long-term student visas, regular tourist visas for stays beyond 90 days, and OCI matters. Bolivia may be served under concurrent accreditation from a neighbouring country, so confirm coverage before travelling to a consulate.

FAQs

India visa FAQs for Bolivian citizens

The questions Bolivian passport holders ask most often about applying for an Indian eVisa.

Yes. India requires proof of yellow-fever vaccination from travellers arriving from Bolivia, and without a valid certificate you can be quarantined on arrival for up to six days regardless of your visa. The certificate only becomes valid ten days after vaccination, so arrange it before anything else.

Both of them, exactly as printed on your passport's name line and in the printed order, in the surname field. If your passport shows MAMANI QUISPE, that whole string is your surname as far as Indian immigration is concerned. Do not shorten it to the primer apellido, do not hyphenate, and do not swap the order.

Up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa — ample for the long itineraries that justify the journey. The 30-day version allows 30 days with double entry. The business eVisa permits up to 180 days per visit within a one-year window, and the medical eVisa 60 days from first entry with triple entry.

Worth pricing both. Santa Cruz generally has better long-haul feed than La Paz, and on a 30-hour journey that can mean one fewer connection. Your eVisa is checked at your Indian arrival airport, so the departure point makes no difference to the visa itself.

Yes. A US connection requires a US visa or ESTA even if you never leave the airport, and your India eVisa has no bearing on it. On a journey already involving two or three connections, route via São Paulo and the Gulf, or via Madrid, if you do not hold one.

No. Bolivia is landlocked and every routing involves at least two connections through São Paulo, Lima, Bogotá or Panama City and then Europe or the Gulf. Total travel time is 28 to 34 hours.
