Overview

What Is a Malaysia eVisa?

A Malaysia eVisa is an electronic travel authorisation issued by the Malaysian Immigration Department to international travellers who wish to visit the country for tourism, business, or social purposes. It is a fully digital visa — stored electronically and linked directly to your passport — eliminating the need to visit a Malaysian Embassy or Consulate in person.

The Malaysia eVisa system was introduced to simplify and digitise the visa application process for eligible foreign nationals. The Malaysia eVisa is available to select eligible nationalities — see the full list on this page. Apply online, receive approval by email, and enter Malaysia without a physical visa stamp.

The Malaysia eVisa online application is the fastest and most convenient way to get your Malaysia tourist visa or business travel authorisation. Approval is typically received within 3–7 working days — making it easy to plan your trip to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Langkawi, or Borneo.

Documents

Malaysia eVisa Document Requirements

To begin the application process for a Malaysia eVisa, you must have the following documents ready. Ensure all information in your application matches your passport exactly.

  • Passport scan (biographical page)

A clear scan or photo of the first page of your passport. Your passport must be a standard travel passport — not a diplomatic or official one — and must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Malaysia.

  • Passport-style colour photograph

A recent passport-style photo of your face only, taken against a white or light background. A clear smartphone photo is acceptable provided it is in focus and correctly sized.

  • Valid email address

Required to receive your eVisa approval notification and all application updates.

  • Credit or debit card

For secure online payment of the application fee.

  • Return or onward ticket

Proof of your confirmed travel out of Malaysia. Immigration officers at the port of entry may request this.

  • Proof of accommodation

A hotel booking confirmation or letter of invitation from your host in Malaysia.

  • Type-specific supporting documents

Business applicants may need an invitation letter from a Malaysian company. Social visit applicants may need a letter of invitation from their host.

Important Notice

Your application must exactly match your passport

The Malaysian Immigration Department requires that the information submitted in your eVisa application matches precisely what is shown in your travel passport. This includes:

  • Full name — including first name, middle name (if applicable), and family name/surname
  • Date of birth exactly as shown in your passport
  • Place of birth as recorded in your passport
  • Current residential address
  • Passport number exactly as it appears in your passport
  • Nationality as per your passport — not your country of residence

Any discrepancy between your application and your passport may result in delays, rejection of your eVisa, or denial of entry at the Malaysian border. Double-check all details before submitting your application.

Guidelines

Guidelines for Malaysia eVisa Applicants

Before applying for your Malaysia eVisa, review these important guidelines to ensure a smooth and successful application.

Apply at least 7–14 days before your intended date of entry into Malaysia to allow sufficient processing time.

The Malaysia eVisa cannot be extended, converted to another visa type, or transferred to another passport.

Overstaying your permitted period in Malaysia is a serious offence that can result in fines, detention, deportation, and a future travel ban.

The Malaysia eVisa does not authorise employment, study, or any form of paid work within Malaysia.

Every individual must apply separately with their own standard passport. Children cannot be included on a parent's application. Diplomatic and official passports are not eligible for the eVisa system.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry and must have at least 1 blank page for immigration stamps.

You must have a confirmed return or onward ticket out of Malaysia and be able to demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your stay.

Carry a printed or digital copy of your approved eVisa during your stay in Malaysia and present it at immigration upon arrival.

Validity

Malaysia eVisa Validity & Expiry

Validity depends on your visa type

The Single Entry Tourist eVisa is valid for 90 days from approval, permitting a stay of up to 30 days from the date of first entry. The Multiple Entry eVisa is valid for 3 or 6 months with each visit capped at 30 days. The Business eVisa is valid for 3 months with a maximum stay of 30 days per visit.

Entry through any official port

Unlike some eVisa destinations, the Malaysia eVisa allows entry through any official international port of entry — including all major airports, authorised seaports, and designated land border checkpoints.

Non-extendable and non-transferable

The Malaysia eVisa cannot be extended beyond its original validity once issued. If you wish to remain in Malaysia beyond your permitted stay, you must exit the country and apply for a new eVisa.

Overstay consequences

Overstaying the permitted period in Malaysia is treated seriously. Penalties include fines, detention, deportation, and a ban from re-entering Malaysia in the future. Always check your visa expiry and permitted stay period carefully.

Minimum passport validity required

Your passport must remain valid for at least 6 months from the date of your planned arrival in Malaysia. At least one blank page is required for the immigration entry stamp.
