Overview
Ghana and Malaysia have more in common than the distance suggests. Both are Commonwealth members with a British institutional inheritance, both built modern economies on commodity exports before diversifying, and both have used education as a deliberate instrument of development. That last point is why the corridor exists: Malaysian universities have taken Ghanaian students for two decades, and the alumni network in Accra is now substantial enough to sustain a steady flow of return visits and business travel.
Alongside the education link sits trade. Ghanaian importers buy electronics, machinery and processed goods through Kuala Lumpur, and Malaysian palm oil and manufacturing interests have looked at West Africa consistently. For Ghanaian business travellers, Kuala Lumpur is a cheaper and less congested regional base than Dubai for the same sourcing trips.
Ghana is on Malaysia's visa-required list, so an approved eVisa is needed before boarding. The application is completed entirely online with documents uploaded, which removes the need to reach the High Commission in Accra in person. Applications from Ghana are assessed closely, with the financial and employment evidence carrying most of the weight — a well-documented trip is routinely approved, a thin file for the same trip is not.

Study is a separate route and an important one for Ghana. A course at a Malaysian institution requires a Student Pass arranged through the university and Education Malaysia Global Services, applied for months before travel. It cannot be converted from a tourist eVisa after arrival, and attempting it is the pattern that causes Ghanaian applications to be examined more closely in the first place.
Employment requires a Visit Pass (Temporary Employment) arranged by a licensed Malaysian employer, approved in Malaysia before you travel. A visitor eVisa used to enter and then seek work is a serious immigration offence.
Every traveller needs their own eVisa, including babies and children, each linked to that person's own Ghanaian passport. A child cannot be added to a parent's application.

A Single Entry Tourist eVisa is valid for 90 days from approval — the deadline by which you must arrive in Malaysia — and grants a stay of up to 30 days once you enter, written on the entry stamp. These are two different periods and confusing them is the most common misreading of the scheme.
The Multiple Entry eVisa runs for three or six months from approval with unlimited entries, each visit capped at 30 days. For Ghanaian importers making regular sourcing trips to Kuala Lumpur, it removes the need to reapply each time, though the case is examined more closely than a single tourist entry.
Your Ghanaian passport must have at least six months of validity from your arrival date and at least one blank page. The eVisa attaches to the passport number and does not transfer to a renewed document — a reissued passport means applying again at full cost.
The eVisa cannot be extended once issued. To stay beyond the 30 days granted on arrival you must leave Malaysia and apply again from outside. There is no in-country extension route.
Overstaying carries compound fines charged per day, escalating to detention, deportation at your own cost and a blacklisting that blocks re-entry for years. For anyone intending to return for study or business later, that record is a lasting obstacle. Read the date on your entry stamp before leaving the counter.

An approved eVisa gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land — including the arrival card that catches out more travellers than the visa itself.
Every traveller must submit the MDAC online within three days before arrival. It is not part of the eVisa, it is not optional, and airlines increasingly check it at the gate. It takes a couple of minutes and must be done for each traveller individually.
Malaysia issues the eVisa as a PDF rather than attaching it to the passport chip. Airline staff at check-in and the immigration officer on arrival both ask to see it, so carry a printed copy as well as the file on your phone.
The automated gates at KLIA are for Malaysian citizens, residents and a small number of registered categories. Visitors arriving on an eVisa are seen at a staffed counter, where the passport is stamped with the date of entry.
The officer may ask where you are staying, how long you intend to remain and how the trip is funded. Having your hotel booking, return ticket and, if you are visiting family, their address to hand makes this a thirty-second conversation.
Flying from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu or Kuching means passing through immigration again on arrival, even though it is a domestic flight. Your eVisa covers it, but keep your passport accessible rather than packed.
The stamp records the date you entered and the date by which you must leave. Overstaying in Malaysia carries fines, detention and a re-entry ban, and the stamp is the only record of your deadline — so read it while you are still at the counter.
Getting there
There is no direct service between Ghana and Malaysia. Accra connects well to the Gulf and to Addis Ababa, and each of those links onward to Kuala Lumpur. Emirates via Dubai and Qatar Airways via Doha are usually the fastest; Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is frequently the best value; Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is a solid third option.
Best time to go
Malaysia is tropical and humid year-round at roughly 25°C to 33°C, which will feel familiar to travellers from Accra or Takoradi. There is no cold season to plan around. The variable is rain, and it differs by Malaysian coast rather than by month in the way Ghana's seasons do.
The Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi west coast circuit is driest from December to March, which coincides with the Ghanaian harmattan and the December holiday season. It is the natural window, though also the busiest and most expensive on the connecting flights out of Accra.
June to September is the value alternative. Conditions on the Malaysian west coast are wetter but workable, it is the best season for Sabah, Borneo and the east coast islands, and fares out of Accra sit well below the December peak.
If you are travelling to visit a student, plan around the Malaysian academic calendar rather than the Ghanaian one. Malaysian universities typically run intakes in February, May and September, with the longest breaks in December–January and June–July. A visit timed to a break gives you far more of your relative's time than one timed to an examination period.
Avoid these
Most refusals are avoidable and technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Ghana — we check for every one of them before submitting.
Malaysia requires the yellow card from travellers arriving from Ghana and checks it at the health desk on arrival, separately from your visa. An approved eVisa is not a substitute. Arrange the vaccination through an approved centre when you apply, not in the final week before departure.
The leading refusal cause. A large sum credited days before applying, on an account that otherwise sits near zero, reads as arranged for the visa. Malaysian Immigration examines six months of pattern rather than the closing balance.
Malaysia is a major study destination for Ghanaians, and the Student Pass must be arranged through the university and EMGS months before travel. It cannot be converted after arrival, and attempting it damages your record for the legitimate application later.
Ghana and Malaysia are both Commonwealth members, and it makes no difference to the visa requirement. An approved visa is needed before boarding exactly as for any other visa-required nationality.

A photograph that fails the check
Shadows across the face, a coloured or patterned background, glasses, or a scan cropped too tightly all cause rejection. Malaysia is stricter than most on the plain white background requirement.
Conditions
These conditions are set by the Department of Immigration Malaysia and do not vary by nationality. The 90-day validity and the 30-day stay are different things, and confusing them is the most common misreading of the whole scheme.
Your approval is issued against the passport number you enter. If you renew or replace that passport before travelling, the eVisa does not transfer — you must apply again on the new document, and there is no refund on the old one.
