Overview

What Is the Sri Lanka ETA?

The Sri Lanka Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital pre-travel permission for eligible foreign nationals visiting Sri Lanka. It is applied for online, approved electronically, and linked to the passport used in the application, so there is no need to visit an embassy or consulate.

The ETA comes in three forms — Tourist, Business, and Transit — so the authorisation matches the reason for your trip. Tourist ETAs cover holidays, sightseeing, visiting friends or relatives, medical treatment, sport, cultural events, and pilgrimages. Business ETAs cover short-term activities such as meetings, conferences, training programmes, and trade fairs. Transit ETAs are for travellers passing through Sri Lanka on the way to another destination.

The entry type and duration of your ETA depend on the variant available for your passport nationality. You can see the options for your passport in the pricing section below, and the conditions printed on your issued ETA always apply.

ETA options

Sri Lanka ETA Purposes of Travel

Select the option that matches the reason for your visit. The application then asks for additional information based on your selection.

Most travellers apply for the Tourist ETA. It covers leisure travel of many kinds, and the application asks for purpose-specific details so your trip is recorded accurately.

Covered purposes

  • Holidays and sightseeing
  • Visiting friends or relatives
  • Medical treatment, sport and cultural events
  • Religious or pilgrimage visits

You will provide

  • Purpose-specific travel details
  • Home address and Sri Lanka address
  • Personal and passport information

Good to know

  • Entry type and duration depend on your nationality
  • Shown in the options for your passport
  • Conditions on your issued ETA apply
Important: An ETA is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry. Immigration officers make the final decision on arrival.

Documents

Sri Lanka ETA Document Requirements

Have the following documents and information ready for every traveller. Document requirements can vary by ETA type and traveller — the application shows the required document types, accepted file formats, and size limits before you save each traveller.

  • Valid passport

The passport you will travel on. Check that it will remain valid for your stay and meets Sri Lanka's current entry rules.

  • Personal and passport details

Name, title, date of birth, gender, nationality, country of birth, passport number, issue date, and expiry date.

  • Travel information

Recent departure country, intended arrival date, purpose of visit, and any ETA-specific travel details.

  • Address or company details

Home and Sri Lanka addresses for Tourist and Transit; Sri Lankan company information for Business.

  • Airline and flight details

Optional airline and flight information, if you have it, to complete your travel record.

  • Supporting uploads when requested

Clear files that match the traveller's information, in the formats and sizes shown beside each upload field.

Important Notice

Your application must exactly match your passport

Enter every detail in English, exactly as it appears in the passport you will travel on. This includes:

  • Full name — given name(s) and family name exactly as printed
  • Date of birth exactly as recorded in your passport
  • Passport number including all letters and numbers
  • Nationality as per your passport, not your country of residence
  • Country of birth as stated in your passport
  • Passport issue and expiry dates exactly as shown

Any discrepancy between your application and your passport may cause delays, problems at check-in, or difficulty at the border. Use the review step to correct details before you continue.

Guidelines

Guidelines for Sri Lanka ETA Applicants

Review these guidelines before you apply to help your application go smoothly.

Apply well before you travel and enter your intended arrival date carefully to allow for processing.

Every traveller needs their own form. Children under 16 on a parent's passport share that parent's form.

Check all details against your passport before submitting. Names, dates and numbers must match.

An ETA does not guarantee entry. Immigration officers make the final decision when you arrive at the border.

The ETA is linked to the passport you apply with. If you change passports, check whether to reapply.

Answering Yes to any eligibility declaration means you cannot apply for a new ETA through this form.

Give accurate Sri Lanka address or company details, since questions change with your chosen ETA type.

Keep a copy of your approved ETA, your passport, and your travel details with you while you travel.

Entry requirements

Conditions

Sri Lanka ETA Validity & Entry Conditions

Entry type and duration vary

Each ETA variant has its own entry type and duration. The options listed for your nationality show both, exactly as returned by the application system.

Follow the issued ETA

The conditions printed on your issued ETA govern your stay. This page does not replace the conditions attached to your travel authorisation.

Linked to your passport

The ETA is tied to the passport you applied with, so travel on the same passport and keep its details identical to your application.

Match the purpose of travel

Choose the Tourist, Business or Transit option that reflects the real reason for your trip, because permitted activities depend on it.

Does not guarantee entry

Holding an approved ETA does not guarantee admission. Immigration officers make the final decision on arrival.
