Travelling from Bishkek or Osh to Sri Lanka means arranging an ETA first. Kyrgyz citizens receive 30 days and two entries on the tourist option, apply with the general civil passport, and usually reach Colombo with one change in the Gulf.

Overview
For a country whose own holiday tradition revolves around a mountain lake, a tropical island is a real change of scene. Kyrgyz travellers who have done Issyk-Kul every August and Antalya once or twice are increasingly choosing Sri Lanka for a winter break: palm-lined beaches instead of snowed-in passes, with tea estates at altitudes that feel oddly familiar to anyone raised near the Tien Shan.
The entry formality is an Electronic Travel Authorisation. People in Bishkek tend to search for a Sri Lanka visa, and the ETA is the document that answers that search for a short tourist trip. Kyrgyzstan was not included among the nationalities whose government charge Sri Lanka waived in 2026, so a Kyrgyz passport pays the standard rate.
Few Kyrgyz citizens make this journey each year, which means friends and forums rarely have first-hand answers. Everything below is aimed at closing that gap, from the passport-versus-ID-card question to the way names built with uulu and kyzy should be typed and the airports that connect Manas with Colombo.

Eligibility
A Kyrgyz citizen cannot enter Sri Lanka as a tourist without an ETA approved in advance. The rule applies equally to a solo backpacker, a couple on honeymoon and a group travelling with an agency, and it applies however short the visit is.
Being outside the waiver list affects only what you pay, not what you are permitted to do. Kyrgyz applicants are charged the standard government rate; children under twelve are the exception, as Sri Lanka does not charge its fee for a child's tourist ETA of up to 30 days. The live prices shown on this page give the current totals.
Holiday travel, a visit to friends, a yoga or Ayurveda stay and attendance at a sporting or cultural event are all tourist purposes. Kyrgyz traders and company representatives heading to Colombo for negotiations, an exhibition or a seminar should choose the business option and not rely on a tourist authorisation.
Many Kyrgyz citizens spend part of the year working in Russia, Kazakhstan or Turkey and may start their trip from Moscow or Istanbul. Where you depart from makes no difference to the requirement: the application follows your citizenship and the Kyrgyz passport you will show on arrival.
Stay & validity
Thirty days is the stay a tourist ETA gives a Kyrgyz visitor, measured from the first arrival in Sri Lanka. The authorisation is double entry, so a side trip to the Maldives or India is possible, but coming back does not reset the count and you are admitted only for the unused remainder.
You do not have to travel straight away. An approved ETA can be used for six months after it is issued, which is handy when winter flights from Bishkek are booked well ahead. Whatever conditions appear on the approval document take precedence.
Kyrgyz general civil passports are valid for ten years, and Sri Lanka requires six months to remain when you land. Check children's passports separately, since their terms are shorter. A longer stay is a matter for the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla, on the edge of Colombo, and has to be requested while your original thirty days are still running.

Requirements
Everything Kyrgyzstan passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Decisions for Kyrgyz passport holders generally arrive within one or two days of submission. There is no interview and no document to post, which is fortunate given that Kyrgyzstan has no Sri Lankan mission of its own.
Plan to submit at least three to five days before you leave Bishkek, and add a further week if you are travelling in late December or January. That is Sri Lanka's busiest period and also when Kyrgyz families use the New Year holidays to travel, so volumes rise at both ends.
Because nothing can be amended once payment is made, slow down at the review stage. A mistake in the passport number or date of birth means paying for a completely new application, and the government charge on the first one is not returned.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
Kyrgyzstan has no nonstop service to Sri Lanka. Manas airport outside Bishkek has good links to the Gulf, and that is the usual way south; some travellers instead cross to Almaty, a few hours away by road, to use Kazakhstan's seasonal Colombo flight or its wider choice of departures.
Best time to go
Winter in Kyrgyzstan is long, and the months when Bishkek struggles with cold and smog are the months when Sri Lanka's south-west is at its finest. Between December and March you can count on dry weather from Negombo down to Tangalle, and on clear mornings in the tea hills around Ella and Nuwara Eliya.
Nooruz on 21 March is a good target date for those who cannot get away at New Year. The beaches are quieter, the sea is still calm on the west coast, and you avoid the mid-April Sinhala and Tamil New Year, when transport inside Sri Lanka is crowded.
Summer is Issyk-Kul season at home, and most Kyrgyz people stay put. Anyone who does travel between June and August should pick the east of the island, where Trincomalee and Arugam Bay have sunshine and surf while the west and south take the monsoon rain. October and November bring showers to most regions and are the least predictable months.
Kyrgyzstan is on UTC+6, so Sri Lanka is thirty minutes behind you, a difference too small to notice. What you will notice is humidity and sea-level heat after life at altitude; give yourself an easy first day on the coast before attempting Sigiriya's staircase or a long safari in Yala.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Kyrgyzstan — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
A name such as Bakyt uulu Azamat does not follow the usual surname-then-given-name pattern, and applicants often rearrange it to look more conventional. Leave it as the passport has it, with each part in the field where the document prints it.
Kyrgyz citizens cross into Kazakhstan and Russia on an ID card so routinely that some reach for it when filling in forms. Sri Lanka needs the passport, and the authorisation is tied to the passport's number alone.
Kyrgyzstan has reissued passports in new designs in recent years, and people often keep the old booklet. Make sure the number you type belongs to the valid document you will carry, since an ETA does not transfer between passports.
The check happens at Manas, before your first flight, not at the transfer desk. A traveller planning to apply during a long connection may not be allowed to board in Bishkek at all.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Sri Lanka does not maintain an embassy in Bishkek, and Kyrgyzstan is handled from its High Commission in Islamabad. Tourists from Kyrgyzstan do not need to deal with that office, because the ETA process is fully online and no passport is submitted in person.
FAQs
The questions Kyrgyzstan passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Kyrgyz citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), obtained online before departure, to visit Sri Lanka as tourists. It is the document commonly referred to as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa. It grants 30 days and two entries.
No. The ID card is accepted only within a small group of neighbouring countries. For Sri Lanka you need the general civil passport with at least six months of validity on arrival, and the ETA is issued against that passport.
It is not. Kyrgyzstan is outside the list of 40 countries covered by the waiver, so the standard government rate applies. See the live prices on this page for what a Kyrgyz applicant currently pays.
With one connection, most often in Dubai or Sharjah, and sometimes in Istanbul. Door to door the trip usually takes eleven to fourteen hours. In winter, some travellers go via Almaty to pick up a seasonal nonstop to Colombo.
Reproduce the Latin spelling and the field layout shown on the photo page. If uulu or kyzy sits in the surname line of the passport, it belongs in the surname field of the form. Do not convert it to an -ov or -ova surname you may use informally.
Most are decided in a day or two, although no timeframe is guaranteed. Submitting three to five days ahead is the minimum we suggest, and earlier in the December to January peak.
Yes. You can apply from Russia or anywhere else, provided you use your Kyrgyz passport details. A Russian residence permit or work patent has no bearing on the ETA, which depends on your nationality.
Once, yes. The tourist ETA is double entry, but both arrivals must happen within the 30 days that start on your first entry. On the way back in you get the days that remain, not a new allowance.
Your nationality is already set to Kyrgyzstan. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
