Overview
Few journeys offer a sharper change of scene than Lesotho to Sri Lanka. Basotho leave a landlocked country that lies entirely above 1,400 metres and arrive on a tropical island ringed by warm sea. The handful who make the trip each year go for beaches, for wildlife, for Buddhist and Christian pilgrimage sites, or to visit friends made through work and study abroad.
Before any of that, a Mosotho traveller needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation. You will see it described online as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, and for practical purposes it plays that role: an approval obtained in advance, stored against your passport number and confirmed by the airline at Johannesburg before the long-haul sector.
Because Lesotho sends so few visitors, clear guidance written for its citizens is hard to find. What follows deals with the points that matter from Maseru, Leribe or Mafeteng: the charge that applies, the passport details to copy, the route through OR Tambo, and how the Sri Lankan seasons compare with a highland winter.
At a glance
Eligibility
Basotho do need the ETA, without exception. Lesotho and Sri Lanka are both Commonwealth members, yet that shared membership brings no visa-free arrangement, and nothing in the rules treats a Lesotho passport differently from other African passports. The approval must be in place before you check in.
Lesotho does not appear on Sri Lanka's list of forty fee-waiver countries, so the standard government rate is payable, with our service fee on top. You will find both in the live prices shown on this page. Parents should note that the government portion is not levied for travellers younger than 12 on a tourist ETA.
Holidays, visits to friends or relatives, yoga and Ayurveda retreats, and taking part in a sporting or cultural event all sit comfortably within the tourist ETA. A Mosotho official, trader or academic going to Colombo for a workshop, seminar or negotiation should pick the business option, because the tourist one does not stretch to that.
Many Basotho live and work in South Africa on permits while keeping their Lesotho passport. Residence in Gauteng or the Free State changes nothing here: the application is made on the nationality of the passport, and a Lesotho passport holder living in Johannesburg applies exactly as one living in Maseru does.
Stay & validity
The tourist ETA allows a Lesotho passport holder to remain for 30 days, starting on the date of the first arrival stamp. Two entries are permitted. Should you leave for India or the Maldives midway and come back, you return to the days still unused, not to a new month.
Approval stays usable for six months from the day it is issued, so there is no harm in applying well ahead of a December trip. Read the approval when it arrives, since the conditions written on it are the ones that bind you.
Sri Lanka wants six months of passport validity remaining on arrival. Check this early, because replacing a passport through Home Affairs in Maseru is rarely quick, and a passport renewed after approval breaks the link to the ETA. In that case a second application, with the new number, is the only remedy.

Requirements
Everything Lesotho passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Approvals for Basotho applicants usually come through in a day or two. Send the application no later than five days before leaving, and treat that as a minimum if you are flying in late December or early January, when both South African airports and Sri Lankan hotels are at full stretch.
Lesotho keeps the same clock as South Africa, three and a half hours behind Colombo in every season. A form sent after supper in Maseru arrives close to midnight Sri Lankan time, which simply means the answer is more likely to be waiting the following afternoon than the following morning.
Factor in the overland stage too. Whether you fly from Moshoeshoe I or drive across Maseru Bridge to Bloemfontein or Johannesburg, the journey to the long-haul gate already takes most of a day. An ETA still pending at that point cannot be chased from a border queue, so have the approval email saved before you set off.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
Every route from Lesotho to Sri Lanka begins with the short hop or the drive to Johannesburg. From OR Tambo there is no nonstop to Colombo, so travellers change once more in the Gulf or in Singapore. Airlink connects Moshoeshoe I International near Maseru with Johannesburg, and some Basotho prefer to drive to Bloemfontein and fly from there.
Best time to go
Winter in Lesotho, from June to August, brings frost in the lowlands and snow on the Maloti. That is when many Basotho most want warmth, and it happens to be the right season for Sri Lanka's east coast. Trincomalee and Pasikudah are dry and sunny then, while the south-west of the island is under monsoon cloud.
The long Christmas break tells the opposite story. From December through March the west and south coasts are at their best, so a festive-season trip should aim for Negombo, Hikkaduwa, Galle or Tangalle. This is peak season for visitors from Europe as well, which is the main reason to apply and book early.
Travellers from a mountain country often feel most at home in Sri Lanka's hill region. Nuwara Eliya and Ella lie high among the tea estates, with cool mornings that will seem familiar after Semonkong or Mokhotlong, and the train ride between them is the island's best-known journey. The hills are clearest from December to April.
Lesotho's own long weekends, around Moshoeshoe's Day in March and Independence Day in October, are too short for a trip this far. October and November also bring inter-monsoon showers across much of Sri Lanka. Two weeks is a sensible minimum given roughly two days spent in the air and in transit.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Lesotho — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
Plenty of Basotho use an English name at work and a Sesotho name at home, and the passport frequently prints both. Entering only the everyday one produces an approval that does not mirror the passport, which airline staff at OR Tambo will notice.
Advice shared in Johannesburg offices is usually written for South African passport holders. Lesotho is assessed as its own nationality, so check the terms for your passport and do not rely on what a colleague with a green South African passport was told.
Leaving the form until the drive to the airport is risky. Data signal fades on the mountain passes and at the border, uploads fail halfway, and a payment prompt from the bank can go unanswered until it expires.
A passport with four months left may be perfectly acceptable for crossing into South Africa every week. It is not enough for Sri Lanka, and the airline will refuse the long-haul boarding even with an approved ETA.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
There is no Sri Lankan office in Maseru. Lesotho is looked after by the High Commission in Pretoria, a few hours' drive away, but Basotho applying for an ETA have no reason to go there. Everything is handled online, and the High Commission is needed only for matters outside the ETA, such as activities requiring prior clearance from Colombo.
FAQs
The questions Lesotho passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Yes. Citizens of Lesotho must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation, the online approval commonly referred to as a Sri Lanka visa, before they travel. For tourism it grants 30 days and two entries and is linked to the passport used in the application.
Yes, at the standard rate. Lesotho is neither one of the forty waiver countries nor part of a reciprocal arrangement. The amount, together with our service fee, is displayed in the live prices on this page, and the government part is dropped for children below 12.
You can apply from anywhere with an internet connection, including Maseru, the districts or a workplace in South Africa. No documents are posted and nobody has to attend an office. The approval is emailed, and you should print it before starting the journey to Johannesburg.
Select Lesotho, because the application follows the passport and not the place of residence. Your South African permit is not part of the Sri Lankan process, although you will naturally need it to re-enter South Africa on the way home.
At least five days, and earlier for travel in December, January or over Easter. Most decisions arrive within a day or two, but allowing a margin gives time to fix an unreadable passport image or a payment the bank has queried.
Yes, a tourist ETA is double entry. The two visits must both fit inside the 30 days that begin at first arrival, so a detour to the Maldives or South India uses up days rather than adding them.
You may not work, paid or unpaid, run a business, or trade. Journalism, political activity and work for a non-governmental organisation need government approval that the online ETA cannot provide. Living on the island through back-to-back visits is not allowed either.
No. It is permission to travel to Sri Lanka, and the final decision rests with the immigration officer at the airport. Carrying a return ticket, a hotel booking and proof of funds makes that conversation short for a Lesotho passport holder.
Your nationality is already set to Lesotho. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
