Overview
Eswatini and Sri Lanka have more in common than the distance suggests. Both are small countries with living royal and religious ceremony, sugar and tea in the fields, and big game within a few hours of the capital. For emaswati who have already explored Mozambique's coast and the South African parks, Sri Lanka is a natural next step into Asia.
The entry formality is an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Travel forums and booking sites tend to call it the Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, and Swazi travellers should treat it with the same seriousness: without an approved ETA recorded against the passport, the airline will not carry you beyond Johannesburg.
Visitor numbers from Eswatini are small, so this guide concentrates on practical matters. It explains the charge for an Eswatini passport, why common surnames call for extra care on the form, how to reach Colombo from King Mswati III International or by road via Oshoek, and which Sri Lankan coast suits which school term.
At a glance
Eligibility
Swazi citizens require the ETA for any short visit. No bilateral agreement lifts it, Commonwealth ties make no difference, and holders of the newer Eswatini-titled passports and the older Swaziland-titled ones are treated alike as long as the document is valid. Approval has to be granted before departure.
On cost, Eswatini falls in the standard category. Sri Lanka's waiver of its government charge covers forty named countries and the kingdom is not one of them, so that charge is collected along with our service fee. Look at the live prices shown on this page for the current totals. A tourist ETA for a child aged under 12 carries no government charge at all.
Choose the tourist ETA for a beach holiday, a safari in Yala, a visit to relatives or friends, a wellness stay, or to compete or perform at an event. Swazi delegates attending a conference, a training course shorter than a month or a religious symposium need the business option, which is selected at the first step of the application.
Some emaswati hold a second passport, most often South African or British. Whichever one you apply with becomes the only one you can use for the trip, since the approval cannot be moved between documents. The charge follows the nationality of that passport too.
Stay & validity
For Eswatini passport holders the tourist ETA means a 30-day stay with double entry. The period is measured from your first arrival, and a second landing in Colombo is given the remainder only. A week in Sri Lanka, five days in the Maldives and a final week back on the island all count against the same 30 days.
You have six months from the date of issue in which to make the journey. That suits Swazi families who plan around school terms and book the December holiday in winter. Whatever is printed on your individual approval overrides general guidance, so keep the email.
Passport validity is where trips fail. Sri Lanka asks for six months beyond the arrival date, and the Ministry of Home Affairs in Mbabane can take weeks to issue a replacement in busy periods. Renew first and apply afterwards, because an ETA granted on the old passport number does not transfer to the new booklet.

Requirements
Everything Eswatini passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
A decision generally reaches Swazi applicants within one or two days. Our advice is to apply no fewer than five days ahead, stretching to two or three weeks for departures in December, when Sri Lanka's peak season coincides with the Incwala period and the long school holiday at home.
Colombo is three and a half hours ahead of Mbabane all year. If you apply during a lunch break in Manzini, it is already late afternoon in Sri Lanka, so mid-morning submissions early in the week tend to see the quickest turnaround. We cannot promise a particular time.
April deserves a special mention. The King's Birthday on 19 April, National Flag Day on the 25th and Easter often combine into an inviting gap in the calendar, and the same weeks contain the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, when much of Sri Lanka goes on holiday. Apply early that month and expect quieter towns on arrival.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
Eswatini has no long-haul flights of its own, so the trip is built around Johannesburg. Airlink and Eswatini Air link King Mswati III International with OR Tambo, though many travellers from Mbabane and the Highveld simply drive there in about four hours through the Oshoek border post. From Johannesburg, Colombo is reached with one change in the Gulf.
Best time to go
The Eswatini school year closes in early December and that long summer holiday is the ideal window for Sri Lanka's south and west. Bentota, Weligama and Mirissa have calm seas, blue whales pass offshore, and the national parks are dry enough for good leopard sightings in Yala.
The shorter mid-year break falls in the Lowveld's cool dry season, when the south-west monsoon is soaking Colombo. Head east instead. Arugam Bay has its surf season between May and September, and the bays north of Trincomalee are sheltered and clear.
Emaswati who appreciate ceremony may want to time a visit for the Kandy Esala Perahera in July or August. Its ranks of dancers, drummers and caparisoned elephants escorting a sacred relic will resonate with anyone who has stood at Ludzidzini for Umhlanga, which follows shortly afterwards at home.
The Cultural Triangle around Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa can be visited in most months, with the heaviest rain from November to January. Remember that every full moon is a Poya holiday on which no alcohol is sold, something to know before planning a celebration dinner.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Eswatini — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
When a large part of the population shares a few clan surnames, given names do the work of telling people apart. Leaving out a middle name, or swapping the order, makes an Eswatini application harder to match and easier to confuse with another traveller's.
Older passports still say Kingdom of Swaziland. The nationality to choose on the form is the same country under its present name, and the passport stays usable until it expires. Do not select a different country because the old name is missing from a list.
Travellers sometimes pay for the regional flight and the long-haul ticket, then discover the passport expires in five months. Check the six-month rule, renew if necessary, obtain the ETA, and only then commit to fares that cannot be changed.
Choirs, football sides and church groups from Eswatini often travel together and let one organiser apply. That works, but the organiser must forward every approval, because each member has to show their own at check-in.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Sri Lanka keeps no mission in Mbabane, and the kingdom is served from Pretoria. Swazi travellers applying for an ETA never need to make that journey, since no interview or stamped visa is involved. Contact with the High Commission is only worthwhile for travel that the online ETA does not cover, such as media or NGO assignments needing clearance.
FAQs
The questions Eswatini passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Yes. Swazi citizens need an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation, widely known as the Sri Lanka visa, before travelling. The tourist version allows a 30-day stay and two entries, and it is issued electronically against your Eswatini passport number.
Yes, provided it is valid for six months past your arrival date. Enter the details exactly as printed and choose Eswatini as the nationality. If you renew before travelling, apply with the new passport, as the approval is bound to one passport number.
No. The waiver of the government charge applies to forty specific countries and Eswatini is not included, so the standard rate is due. Our service fee is separate. Both are shown in the live prices on this page, and under-12s are exempt from the government part.
Almost always through Johannesburg. Fly or drive to OR Tambo, then take Emirates through Dubai or Qatar Airways through Doha to Colombo. Allow close to a full day in each direction once the regional leg and the connection are added.
Two to three weeks before departure is comfortable. Approvals normally take a day or two, yet December is the busiest month in Sri Lanka, and a family application has more passport pages and names that might need a second look.
Every child must be included in an application and hold an approval tied to their own passport. Those under 12 are not charged the government fee on a tourist ETA of up to 30 days. Check each child's passport expiry separately, as they are often issued on different dates.
An extension can be requested from the Department of Immigration and Emigration, whose head office is in Battaramulla on the edge of Colombo. Apply before the date stamped in your passport passes, and do not assume it will be granted when booking a return to Johannesburg.
Not for competing. Taking part in sporting events and competitions is one of the purposes a tourist ETA covers, as are cultural performances. Officials travelling for meetings, a conference or a workshop should use the business option instead.
Your nationality is already set to Eswatini. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
