Important for Swiss citizens

Swiss tourists have paid no Sri Lankan government charge on the ETA since 25 May 2026, but the authorisation remains compulsory and must be approved before you fly.

Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Swiss citizens

Switzerland and Sri Lanka are linked more closely than their distance suggests. Swiss travellers have long been among the island's most loyal European visitors, coming for Ayurveda cures, hiking in the tea hills and warm seas in the depths of an Alpine winter. Switzerland is also home to one of Europe's largest Sri Lankan Tamil communities, tens of thousands strong, so a good share of the passengers flying from Zurich are going to see family.

Since 25 May 2026 Swiss citizens have been among the 40 nationalities for whom Sri Lanka waives its government charge on a tourist ETA. That change is sometimes reported as Sri Lanka becoming visa-free for the Swiss, which is not accurate. The Electronic Travel Authorisation, the document people usually mean when they search for a Sri Lanka visa, remains compulsory and must be approved before you fly.

Applying takes a few minutes online and involves no visit to a consulate in Geneva or anywhere else. What follows explains the stay and entry rules as they apply to a Swiss passport, the spelling questions raised by umlauts and accents, how the cantonal holiday calendars line up with Sri Lanka's seasons, and the mistakes we see most from Swiss applicants.

Eligibility

Do Swiss citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Yes. Swiss nationals need an ETA for every short visit, and that includes Swiss citizens who were born in Sri Lanka or whose parents were. If the passport you travel on is the red Swiss one, you enter as a Swiss visitor and the authorisation has to be recorded against that passport's number.

A tourist ETA covers holidays, visiting relatives and friends, medical treatment including the multi-week Ayurveda programmes that Swiss guests book on the south-west coast, yoga retreats, and attendance at sporting or cultural events. Family occasions such as weddings and temple festivals fall naturally under visiting relatives.

It does not cover work. Swiss professionals attending meetings, negotiations, a conference or a short training assignment need the business option, and anyone planning employment, paid or voluntary, needs a different permission entirely. Journalists and the staff of Geneva-based NGOs must obtain government clearance in advance, which the online ETA cannot provide.

Each family member needs to be entered, children included. As the government charge is waived for Swiss tourists of all ages, what matters for children is the document: a Swiss identity card, enough for a weekend in Italy, is not accepted in Colombo, and a child's passport lasts only five years.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Swiss citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

With a tourist ETA a Swiss visitor may stay 30 days from the date of first arrival and enter twice. People visiting relatives sometimes plan a side trip to Chennai or the Maldives in the middle of their stay; that works, but coming back uses the second entry and only the unused part of the 30 days is given.

The approval can be used to travel at any time in the six months after it is granted. Swiss travellers who book winter flights as soon as the timetable opens can therefore apply early without the authorisation lapsing before departure. Any condition printed on the approval itself overrides general guidance.

Sri Lanka requires a passport valid for six months from arrival. Swiss adult passports run for ten years and those issued to under-18s for five. A passport renewed at the cantonal passport office receives a new number, and because the ETA is bound to the old one, it has to be applied for again.

Thirty days is shorter than the four to six weeks that some Swiss visitors like to spend with family or on an extended cure. A longer stay is possible only with an extension granted by the Department of Immigration and Emigration, whose head office is in Battaramulla near Colombo, and the request must be made before the initial period ends.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Swiss citizens

Everything Swiss passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Swiss passport holders

  • A Swiss passport valid for at least six months from the day you land; the Swiss identity card is not accepted for entry to Sri Lanka
  • Names containing ä, ö or ü written as AE, OE and UE, the way they appear in the two machine-readable lines of a Swiss passport, so Müller becomes MUELLER
  • French and Italian accents, as in Rémy, Jérôme or Nicolò, left out in line with the same machine-readable spelling
  • Long Tamil names entered in full and in the same order as the Swiss passport, even where the surname and given name were assigned differently from family usage
  • The passport number taken from the current passport, not from an older one saved in an airline profile
  • A Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card for payment — TWINT and PostFinance e-finance are not available for this transaction
  • An email address that you check regularly, as the approval is delivered there
  • Your date of arrival and an address in Sri Lanka, which can be the first hotel on your route or the home where you will be staying
  • A return or onward booking and evidence of sufficient funds, in case you are asked on arrival
  • A separate passport for each child, since a child cannot travel to Sri Lanka on an identity card

Simple process

How Swiss citizens apply for a Sri Lanka ETA

Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.

Step 1

Choose your ETA and travellers

Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.

Up to ten travellers
Step 2

Enter passport and trip details

Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.

Around 10 minutes
Step 3

Review, pay and submit

Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.

Fix errors before payment
Step 4

Receive your ETA by email

The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Swiss applications are usually decided within a day or two of submission. Approval times are set by the Sri Lankan system and cannot be guaranteed, though a correctly completed form with a clear passport image seldom takes longer.

Our advice is to apply at least three to five days before your flight, and earlier still for winter travel. December to February is high season in Sri Lanka and also when demand from Switzerland peaks, with the seasonal nonstop from Zurich at its busiest around Christmas and the Sportferien.

Families travelling for a wedding or a funeral often book at very short notice. If that is your situation, apply the same day you book and double-check every passport number in the group, because a single error after payment means a new application for that traveller and more waiting.

On arrival

What Swiss citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Switzerland

Switzerland is one of the few European countries with a nonstop link to Sri Lanka: Edelweiss, the leisure sister airline of SWISS, flies from Zurich to Colombo in the winter timetable on selected days of the week. Outside that season, and from Geneva and Basel all year, travellers connect through the Gulf or Istanbul. Flights via Doha and Dubai are popular with families because they run every day.

  • Zurich (ZRH) — Colombo nonstop with Edelweiss during the winter season
  • Zurich (ZRH) and Geneva (GVA) — Dubai with Emirates, connecting to Colombo
  • Zurich (ZRH) and Geneva (GVA) — Doha with Qatar Airways, with onward flights to Colombo throughout the day
  • Zurich (ZRH) and Geneva (GVA) — Abu Dhabi with Etihad, then a short connection to Colombo
  • Zurich, Geneva and Basel — Istanbul with Turkish Airlines for its Colombo service

Best time to go

When to travel from Switzerland

For most Swiss visitors the season is winter. From December to March the south and west coasts are dry, the sea is warm and calm, and the Ayurveda resorts around Beruwala, Bentota and Weligama are in full swing. Leaving Zurich in fog and landing ten hours later in tropical heat is the whole point.

Holiday dates depend on your canton. The Sportferien in February, which most families associate with skiing, fall in the best weeks of the year for Sri Lanka's south-west and for whale watching off Mirissa. The spring break in April can coincide with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, a rewarding time to be with family but a busy one for trains and buses.

Summer holidays begin around the end of June in Geneva and Vaud and in mid-July in Zurich, during the south-west monsoon. This is when the east coast and the north are at their best: Trincomalee and Pasikudah for swimming, Arugam Bay for surfing, and Jaffna, which has its own airport with regional flights from South India. Many Swiss Tamil families time their visits to the north for these months.

The Herbstferien in October meet the inter-monsoon period, with short, heavy showers that can fall anywhere on the island. It is a quieter time, good for the Cultural Triangle and the hill country if you are relaxed about rain. Sri Lanka is four and a half hours ahead of Switzerland in winter and three and a half in summer, a gap small enough that calls home and jet lag are both manageable.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Swiss citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Switzerland — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Typing umlauts as plain vowels

A Swiss passport prints Müller on the data page and MUELLER in the machine-readable lines. Entering MULLER matches neither. Use the AE, OE and UE forms, and book your flight in the same spelling so that the ticket, the passport and the ETA agree.

Believing the waiver removed the requirement

News that Sri Lanka had dropped its charge led some Swiss travellers to think nothing needs to be done before departure. The government charge for Swiss tourists has gone; the authorisation has not. Airlines at Zurich and Geneva check for it before they hand over a boarding pass.

Name order on naturalised passports

When Tamil names were registered in Switzerland, a father's given name often became the official surname, and the result can differ from how the family writes the name in Sri Lanka. The ETA has to follow the Swiss passport to the letter, not the birth certificate or the name relatives use. Copy both fields from the data page and do not shorten them.

Letting autofill supply an old passport number

Frequent travellers keep passport details stored with airlines and browsers, and autofill will happily supply a number from the passport before last. Because Swiss children's passports are replaced every five years, family profiles go out of date quickly. Read each number from the booklet in your hand.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Swiss citizens

Sri Lanka's consular presence in Switzerland is in Geneva, where its Consulate General sits alongside the Permanent Mission to the United Nations. Swiss applicants for a tourist ETA have no need to travel there or to send in a passport, since everything is done online. The consulate handles matters the ETA does not, including longer-stay visas and documents for people with family ties to Sri Lanka.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Swiss citizens

The questions Swiss passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes, Swiss citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for a short visit, which is the online permission commonly referred to as a Sri Lanka visa. The government charge for it has been waived for Swiss tourists since 25 May 2026, but the ETA must still be obtained before travel. It permits a 30-day stay and two entries.

No. What changed in 2026 is that Sri Lanka stopped collecting its government charge on tourist ETAs from Swiss nationals. The ETA itself is still mandatory. If you use our service to prepare and submit it, a service fee applies, as set out in the live prices shown on this page.

If you are travelling on your Swiss passport, yes. You are treated as a Swiss visitor, and visiting relatives is one of the purposes a tourist ETA covers. Enter your name exactly as the Swiss passport shows it, even if your family uses a different order or spelling.

Use the spelling from the machine-readable lines at the bottom of your passport's photo page, where ä, ö and ü appear as AE, OE and UE. Accents on French or Italian names are simply dropped. Keep the flight booking consistent with that spelling.

Thirty days counted from the first arrival, with one further entry allowed within those 30 days. If you need longer, for an extended family visit or a long Ayurveda cure, you must apply for an extension at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla before your permitted stay ends.

Edelweiss operates a nonstop service between Zurich and Colombo in the winter season, with a flying time of about ten hours. At other times, and from Geneva or Basel, the usual routes are via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul. Check the current timetable, as seasonal schedules change from year to year.

No. Payment is made by Visa or Mastercard, credit or debit. Most Swiss bank debit cards issued in recent years are Debit Mastercard or Visa Debit and work online; an older Maestro card will not.

No. The identity card is valid for travel within Europe only. Sri Lanka requires a passport with at least six months of validity from the date of arrival, for adults and children alike, and the ETA is issued against that passport.
