Important for Liechtenstein citizens
The 2026 waiver of Sri Lanka's government charge covers Switzerland and Austria but not Liechtenstein. Liechtenstein passports are processed at the standard rate.
Overview
Liechtenstein has around forty thousand residents, so the number of its citizens landing in Colombo in any year is small. Those who do go are typically experienced travellers looking for warmth in the months when the Rhine valley sits under fog, and they plan carefully. This page is written for them, and it assumes you want precise answers more than encouragement.
Every Liechtenstein citizen needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling to Sri Lanka. Search engines and travel agencies in the region often call it a Sri Lanka Visum or e-visa, and the ETA is what they mean. The application is made online and the approval is attached electronically to your passport.
Two things set the Liechtenstein case apart. First, the principality is not among the 40 countries covered by Sri Lanka's waiver of the government charge, although Switzerland and Austria on either side of it both are, so the standard rate applies. Second, the journey begins in another country, since the nearest long-haul airport is Zurich, and the airline staff checking your documents there will be looking for an ETA under Liechtenstein nationality.
At a glance
Eligibility
Yes, always. Liechtenstein's membership of the European Economic Area and its open border with Switzerland are irrelevant to Sri Lankan immigration, which treats the principality as a separate nationality with no exemption. An ETA approved before departure is required for adults and children.
The form asks for your nationality, and Liechtenstein has its own entry in the list. Do not select Switzerland because you pay in Swiss francs or fly from a Swiss airport. The nationality must match the passport, whose cover reads Fürstentum Liechtenstein.
For a holiday, a family visit, Ayurveda or yoga, or attendance at a sporting or cultural event, the tourist ETA is correct. Employees of the principality's industrial and financial firms travelling for meetings, negotiations or a seminar need the business option. No form of employment is permitted on a tourist ETA, and journalism, political activity and NGO work require the prior approval of the Sri Lankan government.
Children are added to the same application with their own passport details. Under-12s are not charged the Sri Lankan government fee for a tourist stay of up to 30 days, which is the one concession available to Liechtenstein families under the standard rate.
Stay & validity
The tourist ETA grants a Liechtenstein visitor 30 days from first arrival and allows two entries. The two entries share one 30-day period. Should you leave for the Maldives or southern India partway through, the days keep running while you are away, and you return to the balance.
An approved ETA may be used for a first entry within six months of the date of issue. For a winter trip booked in late summer, that leaves ample room to apply early. The terms shown on your approval are authoritative.
Your passport needs six months of validity counted from the arrival date. Check the expiry date printed in your own Liechtenstein passport, and in each child's, before you apply, because a replacement from the Ausländer- und Passamt in Vaduz will bear a different number. The ETA belongs to the number on the application and cannot be transferred.
If 30 days is not enough, the only route to a longer stay is an extension issued by the Department of Immigration and Emigration at Battaramulla, near Colombo. Apply for it in good time during your stay, because remaining past the date stamped in your passport without one is outside the ETA conditions.

Requirements
Everything Liechtenstein passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Approvals for Liechtenstein applicants typically arrive within a day or two. Because so few applications come from the principality, people sometimes expect a separate procedure; there is none, the same electronic system handles them, and no timing can be promised.
Please apply three to five days before departure as a minimum. The practical reason is geography: you will already have travelled to Zurich by the time anyone checks your documents, and an airline cannot board a passenger for Colombo without an authorisation on record.
Travelling at Christmas, during the Sportferien or at Easter calls for an earlier application, since these are peak weeks for Sri Lanka's south-west coast and for departures from Zurich. If a passport is being renewed in Vaduz, hold the ETA application until the new document is in your hands.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
Liechtenstein has no airport, so every trip to Sri Lanka starts with the journey to Zurich, a little over an hour from Vaduz by car, or by bus to Sargans or Buchs and then train. From Zurich the choice is between the seasonal Edelweiss nonstop to Colombo in winter and year-round one-stop services through the Gulf and Istanbul. Munich, under three hours away by road, is the main alternative.
Best time to go
The strongest case for Sri Lanka from Liechtenstein is made between December and March. While the valley floor is cold and the ski lifts at Malbun are running, the south and west coasts of the island are in their dry season, the hill country is clear and the sea is at its calmest. The winter nonstop from Zurich operates in exactly these months.
School holidays in the principality broadly follow the pattern of eastern Switzerland: a week of Sportferien in late winter, two weeks in spring, a summer break from early July to mid-August and two weeks in October. The winter and spring breaks suit the south-west coast. Around mid-April you may meet the Sinhala and Tamil New Year, when much of the country is on holiday.
The summer break and the national holiday on 15 August fall in the south-west monsoon. Travellers going then should build the trip around the east coast, where Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay have their dry season from May to September, and around Kandy if the Esala Perahera is taking place.
October holidays coincide with the inter-monsoon period, when showers are frequent across the island and the east coast is turning wetter. Wildlife parks such as Yala and Wilpattu and the ancient cities remain worthwhile. The clock difference from Vaduz is four and a half hours in winter and three and a half in summer, as Sri Lanka does not change its clocks.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Liechtenstein — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
Liechtensteiners deal with Swiss systems daily, from the currency to the postal service, and choosing Switzerland in a drop-down list can feel natural. On an ETA it is an error of substance: the authorisation would be issued for a nationality you do not hold. Scroll to Liechtenstein and check it again on the review screen.
Neighbours, colleagues and even travel agents across the Rhine may say that the Sri Lankan government charge was abolished in 2026. It was waived for Swiss and Austrian passports, not for Liechtenstein ones. The standard rate applies, and the live prices on this page show what a Liechtenstein applicant pays.
Some Liechtenstein citizens also hold Swiss or Austrian nationality. If you apply with the Swiss passport to benefit from the waiver, the Swiss passport is the one that must be shown at check-in in Zurich and at immigration in Colombo. Presenting the Liechtenstein passport instead leaves you without a matching ETA.
Family names common in the principality, such as Büchel, Öhri or Häsler, contain umlauts that the machine-readable zone renders as UE, OE and AE. Typing BUCHEL or OHRI creates a mismatch with the passport. Follow the two lines of capital letters at the foot of the data page.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Sri Lanka has no diplomatic mission in Liechtenstein, and the principality is looked after from Sri Lankan missions elsewhere in the region; the closest consular office is the Consulate General in Geneva. None of this affects an ETA, which is applied for online without any contact with a mission. You would only need consular help for purposes the ETA does not cover, such as a long-term stay.
FAQs
The questions Liechtenstein passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Yes, Liechtenstein citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to Sri Lanka, the online permission often described as a visa. It provides a 30-day tourist stay with two entries. Liechtenstein is outside Sri Lanka's fee waiver, so the standard government charge applies.
No. The waiver in force since 25 May 2026 lists 40 countries individually, and Liechtenstein is not among them even though Switzerland and Austria are. Liechtenstein passport holders pay the standard government rate. Children under 12 are exempt from that charge on a tourist stay of up to 30 days.
Swiss. The application follows the passport you travel on, not your country of residence. A Swiss citizen living in Schaan applies as Swiss, and a Liechtenstein citizen living in Zurich applies as a Liechtenstein national.
Yes, provided you use it for the whole trip. Austrian passports are covered by the government-charge waiver, so applying with it will normally cost less. It must have six months of validity from arrival and be the document you hand over at every check.
No. The Identitätskarte is a travel document within Europe only. For Sri Lanka you need a passport, and the ETA is linked to that passport's number.
Via Zurich in nearly all cases. In winter Edelweiss flies nonstop from Zurich to Colombo in about ten hours; in other months you change in Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul. Allow time for the bus and train from Vaduz, Schaan or Balzers to the airport.
Thirty days from your first arrival. You may leave and re-enter once within that period, receiving only the days still unused. Extensions are handled by the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla.
At least three to five days ahead, and sooner for travel over Christmas or in February. Approval generally takes a day or two but is not guaranteed within any set time. As the ETA stays valid for six months, applying when you book your flights is the safest approach.
Your nationality is already set to Liechtenstein. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
