Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Swedish citizens

Sri Lanka has been on the Swedish winter map for decades. When Stockholm is down to six hours of grey daylight, the south coast around Mirissa, Weligama and Tangalle offers warm sea, beginner-friendly surf and a pace that suits a two-week break. Swedes come as backpackers, as families escaping the dark, and as honeymooners.

What every one of them needs first is an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Swedes often search for it as a Sri Lanka visa, or simply visum, and in practice it does the same job: an online permission, tied to your passport number, that should be approved before you leave Sweden.

Sweden is one of 40 countries whose citizens have had the government charge on the tourist ETA waived since 25 May 2026. The authorisation itself remains compulsory, and our service fee for handling the application still applies, so look at the live prices shown on this page rather than assuming the whole process costs nothing.

Eligibility

Do Swedish citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Yes. A Swedish passport does not exempt you from anything here, because Sri Lanka asks every foreign national for an ETA before a short visit. Swedes used to crossing Europe on a nationellt id-kort sometimes discover the requirement at the check-in desk at Arlanda.

The tourist ETA fits what most Swedes travel for: beach and surf holidays, a round trip through Kandy and the tea country, visiting friends, a yoga or Ayurveda retreat, or taking part in a sporting event. It does not allow employment, paid or unpaid, so a volunteering placement of the kind popular with Swedish gap-year travellers should be checked with the organiser rather than assumed to fit.

If a Swedish employer is sending you to meetings, a conference, a workshop or training lasting under a month, pick the business option instead of the tourist one. Journalists on assignment need prior government approval and cannot use the online ETA at all.

Children have to be included as well. No government fee is charged for under-12s on a tourist ETA of up to 30 days, and with the waiver for Swedish citizens the same now holds for the adults travelling with them. Each child still appears in the application with the details from their own passport.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Swedish citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

A tourist ETA gives Swedish citizens 30 days in Sri Lanka with two entries. The clock starts on your first arrival, and both entries must fall inside that same 30 days. Leave for a week in the Maldives on day ten, come back on day seventeen, and you are given the thirteen days that remain, not a new month.

Once approved, the ETA can be used to travel for six months from the date of issue, with the conditions printed on the approval taking precedence. Apply in October for a January departure and the authorisation is still comfortably in date.

Passport validity needs attention because Swedish adult passports last only five years. Sri Lanka wants six months left on the day you land, so a passport expiring in June is no use for a February trip. Renewing after you have applied means a new passport number and a new ETA, so visit the police passport office first. Anyone wintering beyond 30 days needs an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla, near Colombo.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Swedish citizens

Everything Swedish passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Swedish passport holders

  • A Swedish passport with at least six months of validity on your arrival date — check this before anything else, since the five-year term leaves many passports closer to expiry than their holders think
  • The same passport for the application and the flight; a provisoriskt pass issued in a hurry carries a different number and would not match an ETA made on your ordinary passport
  • Names typed as they appear in the machine-readable lines at the foot of the photo page, which is where å, ä and ö are rendered in plain Latin letters
  • All given names in passport order, not only your tilltalsnamn — Karl Erik Anders stays three names even if everyone calls you Erik
  • The passport number copied from the photo page, taking care not to type your personnummer, which sits on the same page and comes to Swedish fingers by habit
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international online payments; several Swedish banks keep internet and foreign purchases switched off until you turn them on in the banking app
  • A return or onward ticket and something showing you can fund the stay, such as a booking confirmation and a recent statement from your bank app, in case an officer asks
  • Each child's own passport, remembering that Swedish passports for children under 12 run for three years and expire sooner than parents expect

Simple process

How Swedish citizens apply for a Sri Lanka ETA

Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.

Step 1

Choose your ETA and travellers

Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.

Up to ten travellers
Step 2

Enter passport and trip details

Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.

Around 10 minutes
Step 3

Review, pay and submit

Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.

Fix errors before payment
Step 4

Receive your ETA by email

The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Most ETA applications from Swedish citizens come back approved within a day or two, and many sooner. That is no promise, and a few are held for checks. We suggest applying at least three to five days before you fly, and earlier still if your departure falls in the Christmas and New Year peak.

The pressure points in the Swedish calendar are predictable. Jullov departures in the week before Christmas, and the sportlov weeks that roll through the regions from mid-February into March, are when Swedish families travel together and when an avoidable delay costs the most.

An error spotted after payment cannot be edited; the application has to be made again. With the government charge waived for Swedes, the real cost of a mistake is time, which is scarce two days before a Saturday departure from Landvetter.

On arrival

What Swedish citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Sweden

There is no scheduled nonstop between Sweden and Sri Lanka, so nearly every Swedish traveller changes planes once. From Stockholm Arlanda the usual choices are Qatar Airways through Doha, Emirates through Dubai and Turkish Airlines through Istanbul. Gothenburg mostly feeds through Istanbul, while travellers from Skåne generally cross the Öresund to Copenhagen.

  • Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) — Doha — Colombo (CMB) with Qatar Airways
  • Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) — Dubai — Colombo (CMB) with Emirates
  • Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) or Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT) — Istanbul — Colombo with Turkish Airlines
  • Malmö and Skåne — train to Copenhagen Kastrup (CPH), then onward via Doha, Dubai or Istanbul

Best time to go

When to travel from Sweden

The Swedish winter and the best of Sri Lanka's south and west coasts coincide almost exactly. From December to March, when Sweden is at its darkest, Galle, Mirissa and Hikkaduwa are dry and calm, the hill country is clear, and blue whales pass close to Mirissa. Seats around jul and nyår sell early.

Sportlov is a strong choice for families. Late February still sits inside the dry season on the south-west side, and a week is just enough for beach plus Kandy and Ella. Påsklov works too, though mid-April brings Sinhala and Tamil New Year, when many businesses close for several days.

Summer reverses the island. Swedish school holidays from mid-June to mid-August line up with the east coast, where Trincomalee, Pasikudah and the surf at Arugam Bay are at their best while the south-west has its monsoon. Few Swedes willingly give up a Swedish summer, but the Kandy Esala Perahera in July or August rewards those who do.

Sri Lanka is four and a half hours ahead of Sweden in winter and three and a half in summer, because the island keeps the same time all year. Höstlov at the end of October falls in the inter-monsoon period, so expect showers on both coasts and leave room for indoor days.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Swedish citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Sweden — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Counting six months from the booking date

Swedish passports run for five years, so a large share of them are in their final year at any given time. Sri Lanka measures six months from the day you arrive, not from the day you book or apply. A passport that looked fine in September can fail the test for a February arrival.

Flying on a provisoriskt pass after applying on the ordinary one

Swedes who find their passport expired or missing shortly before a trip often collect a provisional passport at the last minute. It has its own number, and an ETA made against the old passport does not follow you to the new document. A fresh application is needed, and you should confirm with your airline that the provisional document is acceptable.

Entering the name you use rather than the name printed

Swedish passports list every given name, while daily life runs on the tilltalsnamn. Applying as Lisa when the passport says Anna Elisabet produces an ETA that does not match the photo page.

Assuming a Maldives detour buys extra days

The ETA's two entries make the detour possible, but the 30 days keep running while you are away. Returning for a final week only works if that week still falls inside the original period.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Swedish citizens

Sri Lanka has an embassy in Stockholm, but Swedish citizens applying for a tourist ETA have no reason to visit it. The application is made online and the approval arrives by email.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Swedish citizens

The questions Swedish passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes, Swedish citizens must hold an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling to Sri Lanka, which is what most people mean when they search for a Sri Lanka visa. For a Swede it means a 30-day tourist stay with two entries.

The government charge on the tourist ETA has been waived for Swedish citizens since 25 May 2026. Our service fee for preparing and submitting the application still applies. What a Swede pays in total today is set out in the live prices shown on this page.

Thirty days, counted from the first arrival. Two entries are allowed, but the second only receives whatever is left of the 30 days. Anyone from Sweden planning a longer winter stay needs an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla.

No. Sri Lanka requires six months of passport validity from the date of arrival. Renew the passport first, then apply, because the ETA is attached to the passport number and a renewed Swedish passport always has a new one.

Yes, a tourist ETA is double entry, so a Swedish traveller can leave for Malé and return once. Both arrivals must fall within the same 30 days.

Follow the two machine-readable lines at the bottom of your passport's photo page and type the name the way it is spelled there. Do not improvise a transliteration, and include every given name the passport shows rather than only your tilltalsnamn.

As soon as your flights are confirmed. The weeks before jul and sportlov are the busiest for Swedish departures, and an approved ETA stays usable for six months, so nothing is lost by applying early.

Every child must be included in an application with their own passport details. Under-12s carry no government fee on a tourist ETA of up to 30 days. Check the child's passport expiry carefully, since Swedish children's passports are issued for a shorter term than adult ones.
