Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Finnish citizens

By the time kaamos settles over Finland, a large part of the country is thinking about somewhere warm. Thailand and the Canary Islands take the biggest share of Finnish winter travellers, but Sri Lanka appeals to those who want more than a sunbed: wildlife, Buddhist temples, a train through the tea country, and beaches that are still quiet by South-East Asian standards.

Finland takes digital paperwork for granted, so the entry formality will not feel unusual. It is an Electronic Travel Authorisation, completed online and attached to your passport number. Finns search for it as a Sri Lanka viisumi, and although it is technically an authorisation and not a visa stamp, it performs the same function for a short stay.

Finnish citizens benefit from the waiver introduced on 25 May 2026, under which Sri Lanka no longer collects its government charge on tourist ETAs from 40 nationalities. Getting the ETA remains mandatory. Our service fee for preparing the application is separate from that charge, and the live prices shown on this page reflect it.

Eligibility

Do Finnish citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Every Finnish citizen visiting Sri Lanka for a short period needs an ETA, and it should be granted before you board in Helsinki. The exemption Finland enjoys is financial only. An airline will still look for the authorisation at check-in, and immigration in Colombo will still look it up against your passport.

For most Finns the tourist ETA is the correct choice. It takes in holidays and sightseeing, visits to friends, sporting events and medical or wellness stays. Finns raised on the sauna often take naturally to Ayurveda, and a fortnight at a retreat in the south-west is squarely within what the tourist ETA allows.

It is not the right choice for work-related travel. A Finnish engineer attending a client meeting, or a researcher presenting at a symposium in Colombo, should apply under the business option. Paid or unpaid employment and self-employment are outside both the spirit and the letter of a tourist ETA.

Children travelling on Finnish passports must be part of the application. The government fee is not charged for children under 12 on tourist stays up to 30 days, and for Finnish nationals it is waived at every age for now. The paperwork requirement is identical for a baby and a pensioner.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Finnish citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

A Finnish citizen's tourist ETA is good for 30 days counted from first arrival and allows two entries. Think of it as a single month with a door that opens twice. If you fly to southern India for five days in the middle of the trip, those five days are spent, and you return to whatever is left.

After approval you have six months in which to travel, with the printed conditions on the approval having the final say. That window is generous enough for Finns who book winter flights during the summer holiday and want the formalities done before autumn.

Finnish passports are valid for five years at most, and this is where trips come unstuck. With such a short cycle, a passport in its last year is common, and Sri Lanka insists on six months remaining at arrival. An ETA cannot be moved to a renewed passport, so renew first if the dates are tight, then apply with the new number.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Finnish citizens

Everything Finnish passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Finnish passport holders

  • A Finnish passport with six months or more remaining on the date of arrival — worth checking early, as the five-year validity runs out faster than most people remember
  • The passport and not the henkilökortti; the identity card is fine for Tallinn or Stockholm but has no role on a trip to Colombo
  • Names spelled as the machine-readable zone shows them, which is where ä, ö and, for Swedish-speaking Finns, å are converted
  • Hyphenated given names such as Juha-Pekka or Anna-Liisa kept together in the given-name field as the passport presents them
  • The passport number from the photo page, not your henkilötunnus
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international online payments; confirm in your bank's app that online purchases outside Europe are allowed
  • An email address you can reach from your phone, since the approval will arrive there and should be saved offline before you leave Helsinki-Vantaa
  • A return or onward flight booking and evidence of funds, kept handy for the immigration desk
  • The name and address of your first hotel or retreat in Sri Lanka and your planned arrival date

Simple process

How Finnish citizens apply for a Sri Lanka ETA

Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.

Step 1

Choose your ETA and travellers

Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.

Up to ten travellers
Step 2

Enter passport and trip details

Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.

Around 10 minutes
Step 3

Review, pay and submit

Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.

Fix errors before payment
Step 4

Receive your ETA by email

The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Finnish applicants generally hear back within one to two days. That is typical, not guaranteed, and a few applications are looked at more closely. Three to five days before departure is the minimum we would recommend, with a longer buffer for travel over Christmas, New Year and the hiihtoloma weeks.

Hiihtoloma is spread across weeks 8, 9 and 10 depending on where in Finland you live, which stretches the demand over most of a month. Families from the south travel first and those from the north last. Whichever week is yours, the ETA can be obtained as soon as flights are booked and will remain usable.

Nothing in a paid application can be changed afterwards, so a wrong digit or a missing name means applying afresh. The government charge that would normally be lost is waived for Finns, yet the repeat still takes time. Compare the review screen against the passport itself, character by character, before paying.

On arrival

What Finnish citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Finland

Helsinki-Vantaa has no nonstop to Colombo, but its long-haul network gives Finnish travellers several workable one-stop options. Finnair and Qatar Airways link Helsinki with Doha, from where Qatar Airways flies on to Colombo. Turkish Airlines connects through Istanbul. Finnair's own Asian services to Delhi and Bangkok can be combined with a SriLankan Airlines flight for the final leg. Travellers from Oulu, Tampere or Rovaniemi add a domestic connection first.

  • Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) — Doha — Colombo (CMB) with Finnair and Qatar Airways
  • Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) — Istanbul — Colombo (CMB) with Turkish Airlines
  • Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) — Delhi or Bangkok with Finnair, then SriLankan Airlines to Colombo
  • Oulu (OUL), Rovaniemi (RVN) and other regional airports — via Helsinki, then as above

Best time to go

When to travel from Finland

The months when Finland is darkest are the months when Sri Lanka's south and west are at their best. From December through March the sea off Bentota and Unawatuna is calm, the skies over Nuwara Eliya are clear, and Yala's leopards are easier to spot as water sources shrink. Joululoma and hiihtoloma both fall inside this period.

Syysloma in mid-October is less reliable. It coincides with the inter-monsoon weeks, and afternoon downpours are likely almost anywhere. A Finnish family with only that week available will get more from the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa than from a beach hotel.

Hardly any Finns leave during juhannus and the bright weeks of July, but if you do, go east. Pasikudah, Trincomalee and Arugam Bay are dry from May to September while the south-west takes the rain. The Kandy Esala Perahera, held in July or August, is the island's grandest procession and worth the summer sacrifice for some.

Sri Lanka runs three and a half hours ahead of Finland in winter and two and a half in summer. That is among the smallest gaps of any long-haul destination from Helsinki, and most Finns adjust within a day. Vesak, at the full moon in May, lights the whole island with lanterns and is a public holiday.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Finnish citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Finland — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Travelling on a passport in its final months

A Finnish passport lasts five years, half the term common elsewhere in Europe, so the six-month requirement bites more often. Check the expiry against your arrival date, not your booking date. If it falls short, the airline will not accept you, with or without an approved ETA.

Renewing the passport after the ETA is approved

Finns can renew online quickly, and it is tempting to tidy up an ageing passport before a big trip. Do it before applying. The new passport arrives with a new number, and an ETA issued against the old one stays with the old one.

Splitting or shortening a hyphenated name

Double given names are a Finnish tradition, and booking systems handle them inconsistently. Whatever your airline ticket does with Marja-Leena, the ETA should carry the name as the passport prints it. Dropping the hyphenated half creates a different name from the one immigration sees.

Booking a wellness stay longer than the ETA

Ayurveda programmes are often sold in three- or four-week blocks, and adding beach time on either side can push a trip past 30 days without anyone noticing. Count the nights from arrival to departure. Beyond 30 days you need an extension from the immigration department in Battaramulla.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Finnish citizens

There is no resident Sri Lankan embassy in Helsinki, and Finland falls under the embassy in Stockholm. None of that touches an ETA application, which Finnish citizens complete online from home without posting documents anywhere.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Finnish citizens

The questions Finnish passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes, Finns need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), the online entry permission commonly described as a Sri Lanka visa, approved before travel. A tourist ETA allows 30 days and two entries and is recorded against your Finnish passport number.

Sri Lanka's government charge on the tourist ETA has been waived for Finnish nationals since 25 May 2026. A service fee for our application assistance is still payable. Please refer to the live prices shown on this page instead of older figures you may find elsewhere.

Renew it before applying. Sri Lanka requires six months of validity from your arrival date, and because the ETA is bound to a passport number, an authorisation obtained on the old passport cannot be used with the new one.

No. The henkilökortti is not accepted for this journey. A full Finnish passport is required, and the ETA is issued against that passport specifically.

Yes. Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga, is one of the purposes a tourist ETA permits. Just make sure a Finnish guest's total stay, retreat plus any touring, fits within 30 days from arrival.

With one stop. The most common routings from Helsinki are through Doha or Istanbul, and some travellers combine a Finnair flight to Delhi or Bangkok with SriLankan Airlines onward. Total travel time is usually 12 to 14 hours.

An approved ETA is valid for travel for six months from issue, so applying in the autumn for a late-February trip is fine. At a minimum, apply three to five days before departure.

Once, yes. The tourist ETA is double entry. Both entries have to fall within the 30 days that began with your first arrival, and the time you spend outside the country is not credited back.
