Slovak passport holders need an approved ETA before boarding for Colombo. It allows a 30-day tourist stay with two entries, is charged at the standard government rate, and is best arranged several days before you leave for Vienna or Bratislava airport.

Overview
Sri Lanka is a niche but steadily growing choice for Slovaks, helped by the fact that Vienna's long-haul network is under an hour from Bratislava. Travellers who once defaulted to Thailand or Zanzibar for winter sun are increasingly drawn to an island where a fortnight can combine rock fortresses, tea estates, elephants and a proper beach.
Before any of that, each Slovak visitor needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation. You will see it described as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa on Slovak travel blogs, and the label hardly matters: what counts is that an approval exists against your cestovný pas number before the airline accepts you for the flight.
This page concentrates on the points that actually trip up applicants from Slovakia: the unusually short life of young children's passports, names full of mäkčene and dĺžne, the choice between several departure airports, and the fact that Slovakia falls outside the group of countries enjoying a fee waiver.

Eligibility
Slovak nationals require an ETA for any short visit, and it has to be in place before departure. Living in a small Schengen country where borders are crossed without thought, many Slovaks are surprised that a holiday destination insists on paperwork in advance, but check-in staff will ask for it.
It is worth being clear about cost, because confusion spreads easily across the border. Czech citizens appear on Sri Lanka's list of 40 nationalities whose government charge is waived; Slovak citizens do not, so the standard government rate applies to a Slovak passport. The amounts payable today are in the live prices shown on this page.
A handful of Slovaks hold a second passport, most commonly Czech or Hungarian. The authorisation follows the document, not the person, so decide which booklet you will carry, apply with that one and present the same one on arrival.
Tourism, family visits, yoga and Ayurveda stays and sporting events are covered by the tourist ETA. Slovak business travellers attending meetings, a seminar or a trade workshop should select the business option, and volunteering for a charity or reporting for Slovak media cannot be done on an online ETA.
Stay & validity
Your approval remains usable for travel for six months after it is issued, which gives room to book flights from Vienna during a sale and settle the paperwork straight away. The terms printed on the approval itself take precedence if they differ from any general description.
On arrival the clock starts on a 30-day stay. Slovak holidaymakers typically spend ten to sixteen days on the island, well inside that limit, and the double-entry feature lets you add a side trip to southern India or Malé and re-enter for the balance of the period.
The limit is easy to misjudge on longer backpacking trips. Day one is the day you are stamped in, and if you intend to stay past day 30 you must secure an extension from the immigration head office at Battaramulla beforehand, since overstaying is an immigration offence.

Requirements
Everything Slovak passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Most Slovak applications are approved within one or two days. As the outcome is decided by Sri Lankan immigration and occasionally takes longer, please treat three to five days before departure as the latest sensible moment to apply.
Slovakia's long-haul travel is concentrated into a few weeks: Christmas to Epiphany on 6 January, and the regional jarné prázdniny weeks. During those periods submit at least ten days ahead, because a correction requires a completely new application and there is little slack if flights are full.
Should you discover a typing error after paying, do not wait and hope. Government charges are non-refundable and a paid application cannot be amended, so the fix is to reapply promptly with the correct details.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
With no direct service from Slovakia, the journey to Colombo involves one change. Vienna Schwechat is the main gateway for western Slovakia and offers the widest choice of Gulf and Turkish connections, Bratislava's own airport has a limited schedule, and eastern Slovaks often start from Košice or drive to Budapest.
Best time to go
From a Slovak perspective Sri Lanka is primarily a cold-season destination. Between December and March, when the Tatras are busy with skiers and Bratislava is foggy, the island's south-west coast and central highlands enjoy their driest, sunniest spell.
Jarné prázdniny rotate by region, with the Bratislava area, central Slovakia and the Košice and Prešov regions each taking a different week between mid-February and early March. All three weeks sit inside the dry season for Bentota, Unawatuna and Tangalle, and inside the Mirissa whale season.
Slovak summers are warm enough that few people look for heat in July and August, but those who do should book the east coast, where Nilaveli and Pasikudah are calm while the south-west is under monsoon cloud. Leopard watching in Yala is also good in the dry mid-year months.
The island keeps a single time all year at UTC+5:30, so the gap from Slovakia is four and a half hours in winter and three and a half in summer. Eastbound flights via the Gulf tend to land around dawn; plan an easy first day instead of a long drive to the hills.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Slovakia — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
Slovak passports for children under six last just two years, and six of those months are effectively unusable for Sri Lanka. Parents regularly discover at the airport that a document with four months remaining is not enough.
News about waived charges circulates freely between Czech and Slovak media. The list is drawn up by nationality, Slovakia is not on it, and budgeting on the basis of a neighbour's rules leads to an unwelcome surprise at payment.
Some Slovak women shorten their surname informally or book tickets under a partner's form of the name. The ETA, the ticket and the passport must all carry the identical surname.
Dual Slovak-Czech or Slovak-Hungarian nationals sometimes grab whichever booklet is to hand on departure day. An authorisation issued against one number is useless with the other document.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
There is no Sri Lankan embassy in Bratislava; Slovakia is served from Vienna, a short trip up the Danube. Tourist ETA applicants have no reason to go there, because nothing in the online process involves an appointment or handing over a passport.
FAQs
The questions Slovak passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Slovaks need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, commonly referred to as a Sri Lanka visa, approved before travel. It is obtained online and gives a tourist stay of 30 days with double entry.
No. Slovakia is not one of the 40 countries covered by the waiver introduced on 25 May 2026, so the standard government rate applies. What a Slovak passport costs today is set out in the live prices shown on this page.
It can be. Sri Lanka requires six months of validity from the arrival date, so a two-year passport for an under-six becomes unusable for this trip once it is eighteen months old. Renew it before applying.
Most travellers from western Slovakia use Vienna, which has frequent departures to Dubai, Doha and Istanbul. Bratislava, Košice and Budapest are alternatives depending on where you live and the season.
Use the unaccented spelling from the machine-readable zone of your passport. Ľ becomes L, Š becomes S and Ô becomes O, so Šoltýsová is typed as SOLTYSOVA.
A tourist ETA is for holidays and visits and does not allow employment or self-employment in Sri Lanka. It also cannot be used to live there through repeated visits.
At least three to five days, and nearer ten days for Christmas or spring-break departures. Approvals usually arrive in a day or two but cannot be promised.
No. Under-twelves are exempt from the government fee on a tourist ETA of up to 30 days, and that holds for Slovak children even though adults pay the standard rate. They must still be listed on an application with their own passport details.
Your nationality is already set to Slovakia. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
