Croatian passport holders need an approved ETA for Sri Lanka before check-in. It allows 30 days and two entries on the standard government rate, and it suits the off-season months when much of the Adriatic coast finally takes its own holiday.

Overview
Croatia spends its summers hosting other people's holidays, which is why so many Croatians take theirs between November and March. Sri Lanka fits that calendar neatly. When the season ends in Dubrovnik, Split and Istria, the south coast of the island is just coming into its best weather, and a growing number of hospitality workers, skippers and families head there to recover.
Travel to Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation obtained in advance. Croatians often refer to it as a viza, and English searches use Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, but officially it is an ETA: a digital approval held against the number of your putovnica and verified by the airline before boarding.
Nothing about the process is difficult, yet a few Croatian specifics are worth knowing. Passport terms differ sharply by age, the letter đ causes regular confusion, many citizens hold a second passport, and Croatia is charged at the standard rate.
At a glance
Eligibility
The requirement applies to all Croatian nationals making a short visit. Having joined Schengen in 2023, Croatians have become used to travelling around Europe with only an osobna iskaznica, but that card will not get you onto a flight to Colombo.
Sri Lanka's waiver of its government charge is limited to a published list of 40 countries. Croatia is not included, so applicants with a Croatian passport pay the standard government rate, and the amounts are set out in the live prices shown on this page.
A considerable share of Croatian passport holders were born or live elsewhere, notably in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany, Austria, Ireland and Australia. If you have two passports, the fee treatment and the ETA follow whichever one you use, so an Australian-Croatian dual national should think about which document to travel on and stay consistent from application to arrival.
Holidays, visits to friends, wellness and Ayurveda stays, cultural events and sports competitions come under the tourist ETA. Croatians travelling for commercial meetings, a professional conference or short training should pick the business option, and crewing or working aboard a vessel for pay is not a tourist activity.
Stay & validity
The approval can be used for a first entry at any point in the six months after it is issued. Croatians who book in September for a January departure can apply at once, on the condition that the same passport will still be in use.
A tourist ETA provides 30 days in the country, starting on the day of arrival. It is a double-entry document, so a side trip is possible, but the two visits share the single 30-day period and the second is granted only the days left over.
Thirty days is ample for most holidays. Seasonal workers who have a whole winter free sometimes want longer; that calls for an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration at Battaramulla, applied for before the first period lapses. The conditions on your approval notice are the ones that govern.

Requirements
Everything Croatian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Croatian applicants usually hear back within a day or two. Our advice is to submit at least three to five days before travel, with no promise attached to any timeline, because the Sri Lankan authorities make each decision.
The busy period for Croatians is the opposite of the country's own tourist season: late November, the weeks around Christmas and New Year, and the two-part winter school break. Apply ten days or more ahead for those dates, when flights from Zagreb through the Gulf fill quickly.
If you are finishing a season on the coast and leaving within days of your last shift, do the application before the final week. A new passport collected at the last minute will need its own ETA.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
There are no nonstop flights between Croatia and Sri Lanka. Zagreb offers one-stop itineraries through Istanbul and the Gulf, and travellers from Dalmatia in winter, when coastal airports run thin schedules, normally connect through Zagreb or a larger European hub first.
Best time to go
The Croatian off-season and Sri Lanka's prime months overlap from December to March. That is the time for the beaches from Bentota round to Tangalle, the colonial streets of Galle Fort, and the cool tea country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya.
Coming from a seafaring country, many Croatians are interested in the water. Whale and dolphin trips operate from Mirissa between November and April, and the calm winter sea on the south-west side is good for diving, although anyone who sails professionally should remember that paid work is excluded.
Those who can travel in summer, perhaps teachers or public-sector staff, should choose the east coast. From May to September it is dry around Trincomalee and Pasikudah, the surf is running at Arugam Bay, and the Kandy Esala Perahera takes place in July or August.
Croatia shares Central European Time, so Sri Lanka is four and a half hours ahead in winter and three and a half in summer. November trips, popular around the 1 and 18 November holidays, fall in the inter-monsoon period, when showers are likely but rarely last all day.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Croatia — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
Croatians often spell Đ as DJ in emails and bookings, yet the machine-readable zone of the passport uses a plain D. The ETA should match the passport, and ideally the airline ticket should too.
Young adults frequently assume they hold a ten-year passport. A document issued at 19 expires at 24, and it needs six months left on the day you land in Colombo.
Applying with a Croatian passport and then travelling on a Bosnian, German or Australian one leaves you without a valid authorisation, because the ETA cannot be read against a different number.
Taking a job in a dive centre, restaurant or guesthouse, even informally, breaks the terms of a tourist ETA. So does returning again and again to live there.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Sri Lanka handles its relations with Croatia from a mission based outside the country, so there is no office to visit in Zagreb. For a tourist ETA that makes no difference, as the application is made and approved online without any consular step.
FAQs
The questions Croatian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Croatians need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, the online approval commonly called a Sri Lanka visa, before travelling. A tourist ETA permits a 30-day stay and two entries.
Yes. Croatia is not on the list of 40 countries whose government charge is waived, so the standard rate applies. The live prices shown on this page give the current amounts.
As a plain D, which is how it appears in the machine-readable zone of a Croatian passport. Đorđe Tuđman would be entered as DORDE TUDMAN.
Either, but only one. Australia is among the countries whose government charge is waived and Croatia is not, so the choice affects cost. Apply and travel on the same passport throughout.
It must be valid for six months from your arrival date. Remember that passports issued to Croatians under 21 last five years, so check the expiry before booking.
No. Expect one change, usually in Istanbul, Doha or Dubai, and a total journey of about twelve to fifteen hours.
Not on the initial ETA alone, which gives 30 days. A longer stay needs an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration, and working during the stay is not allowed.
At least three to five days before departure, and earlier around Christmas. Apply only once you are sure which passport you will travel with.
Your nationality is already set to Croatia. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
