Important for Czech citizens
Since 25 May 2026 Sri Lanka has waived its government charge on tourist ETAs for Czech citizens. You must still hold an approved ETA before travelling.
Overview
Czechs have a long-standing appetite for what the local travel trade simply calls exotika, and Sri Lanka sits high on that list. It offers a warm sea in the months when Bohemia and Moravia are grey and frozen, it is noticeably cheaper on the ground than the Maldives, and Czech tour operators have sold it as a winter package for years alongside independent backpacking routes through Kandy and Ella.
Whichever style of trip you choose, an Electronic Travel Authorisation is required before you fly. Many Czech travellers search for it as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, and in everyday terms that is what it is: an online permission recorded against the number of your cestovní pas, checked by the airline at the desk in Prague and again by immigration at Katunayake.
The good news for this passport arrived on 25 May 2026, when Sri Lanka stopped levying its government charge on tourist ETAs for 40 nationalities, the Czech Republic among them. That waiver removes a cost, not the obligation, so the application itself still has to be completed correctly and approved ahead of departure.
At a glance
Eligibility
Yes, every Czech citizen needs one, from a retired couple on an organised tour to a student with a rucksack and a one-way plan through Asia. EU membership and Schengen travel habits count for nothing here, and the občanský průkaz that takes you to Croatia or Spain is not a travel document for Sri Lanka at all.
The waiver deserves a precise explanation because it is widely misreported in Czech travel groups online. Sri Lanka no longer collects its own government charge from Czech tourists, yet our service fee for preparing and checking the application still applies, so please read the live prices shown on this page instead of assuming the whole process costs nothing.
A tourist ETA suits the reasons most Czechs travel: beach holidays, wildlife safaris, a surf camp, an Ayurveda retreat or visiting friends who have moved there. Czech engineers, exporters and speakers heading to meetings, trade negotiations or a conference fall under the business option, which should be chosen at the start of the form.
Children are included in the same requirement. Under-twelves of every nationality are not charged the government fee for a tourist stay of up to 30 days, which makes little practical difference to Czech families now that the waiver covers adults too, but each child must still appear as a named traveller on an application.
Stay & validity
Once approved, the authorisation can be used to travel for six months from the date of issue. That generous window suits the Czech habit of booking winter long-haul trips in early autumn, since an ETA obtained in October will still be good for a February departure during jarní prázdniny.
The stay itself is 30 days, counted from the first time you are stamped in. Two entries are permitted, which matters for Czechs who pair Sri Lanka with a few days in the Maldives: you may fly to Malé and come back, but the return leg uses up the same 30-day period and only the unused days are granted again.
Anyone hoping to spend longer, for example a remote worker escaping a Prague winter, has to apply for an extension through the Department of Immigration and Emigration at Battaramulla, just outside Colombo. A tourist ETA never permits employment or self-employed work for Sri Lankan clients, and repeated back-to-back visits used as a way of living there are outside its conditions.

Requirements
Everything Czech passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Applications from Czech citizens are usually straightforward, and most approvals come back within a day or two. Nobody can promise a particular turnaround, because the decision rests with the Sri Lankan authorities, so we suggest submitting no later than three to five days before your flight.
Give yourself more margin if you are travelling at Christmas, over New Year or in the weeks of the spring half-term, when Czech demand for long-haul sun peaks alongside that of the rest of Europe. Those are also the dates on which a missed flight is hardest and most expensive to rebook.
Because Colombo runs four and a half hours ahead of Prague in winter, a form sent on a Friday evening Czech time reaches Sri Lanka late at night. It costs nothing to apply earlier in the week and avoid relying on the weekend.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
No scheduled nonstop links the Czech Republic with Sri Lanka, so Czech travellers change planes once, nearly always in the Gulf or in Istanbul. Václav Havel Airport Prague has direct services to all the useful hubs, while passengers from Brno and South Moravia often find Vienna just as convenient as their own capital.
Best time to go
The Czech winter and Sri Lanka's best beach weather coincide almost perfectly. From December to March the south and west coasts are dry and calm, the hill country is clear, and whale-watching boats leave Mirissa daily, all while Prague sits near freezing under a low sky.
Jarní prázdniny, staggered district by district across February and into March, is the sweet spot for families: a week is short for such a long flight, but many parents add days on either side and build a ten-day loop of Negombo, Sigiriya, Kandy and a southern beach.
July and August, the main Czech school holiday, bring the south-west monsoon to Galle and Bentota. Summer visitors should turn the map around and head for Trincomalee, Pasikudah or the surf at Arugam Bay on the east coast, with the Kandy Esala Perahera as a cultural highlight if the dates line up.
Autumn breaks around 28 October and 17 November fall in the inter-monsoon period, when showers can appear anywhere on the island but prices are lower and sights are quiet. Remember that monthly Poya full-moon days are public holidays on which alcohol is not sold, something Czech visitors used to a beer with dinner tend to notice.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Czech Republic — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
Czech forums filled quickly with the claim that Sri Lanka had gone visa-free. It has not. Airlines at Prague still look for an approved ETA against your passport, and a traveller without one can be refused boarding however the government charge is treated.
Řezníček, Němcová and Kůs all lose their accents in the machine-readable zone. Enter the plain Latin letters printed there; adding háčky or inventing substitutes produces a record that does not match the booklet.
Parents holding ten-year passports often forget that a child's document issued before the age of 15 expires far sooner. One passport that falls under six months of validity on arrival day can halt the whole family at check-in.
A Czech traveller who obtains an ETA in autumn and then collects a new cestovní pas before a winter trip has an authorisation tied to a cancelled number. The new booklet needs a fresh application.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Sri Lanka has no resident embassy in Prague; the Czech Republic is covered by the embassy in Vienna. You do not need to contact it for a tourist ETA, which is handled entirely online, but it is the mission to approach for matters that fall outside the online system.
FAQs
The questions Czech passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Czech citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, often called a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, before travelling. It is applied for online, linked to the passport number and allows a 30-day tourist stay with two entries.
Sri Lanka's government charge on tourist ETAs has been waived for Czech nationals since 25 May 2026. A service fee for our application assistance still applies, and the current figure is in the live prices shown on this page.
No. The občanský průkaz is valid only within Europe. Sri Lanka requires a passport with six months of validity from arrival, and the ETA is issued against that passport's number.
Copy the spelling from the two machine-readable lines under your photograph, where accents are removed. Černý is entered as CERNY and Růžičková as RUZICKOVA.
Thirty days from first arrival. The ETA is double entry, but a second arrival only receives whatever remains of those 30 days. A longer stay needs an extension from the immigration department in Battaramulla.
Three to five days before departure is a sensible minimum, and earlier for Christmas or spring-holiday travel. Most decisions arrive within a day or two, though no timing is guaranteed.
Yes, provided both arrivals fall inside the 30 days that began when you first entered. Many Czech itineraries finish with a few nights in the Maldives and a final night near Colombo airport, which fits comfortably.
Every child must be named on an application and travel on their own passport. Check the expiry carefully, since Czech passports for under-15s are valid for five years only.
Your nationality is already set to Czech Republic. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
