Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Andorran citizens

A journey from Andorra to Sri Lanka begins with a mountain road. The Principality has no commercial airport of its own for long-haul travel, so the first stage is a coach or car down to Barcelona or Toulouse, followed by two flights. The reward is a tropical island about as unlike the high Pyrenees as anywhere on earth.

The paperwork is simpler than the logistics. Andorran citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, which travel sites often label a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, and it should be approved before you set off down the valley.

Andorra is not one of the 40 countries whose citizens had the government charge lifted in May 2026. Spain and France both are, a difference that matters in a country where neighbours often hold different passports. The live prices shown on this page show what an Andorran passport holder pays.

Eligibility

Do Andorran citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Yes. Andorran nationals require an ETA for any short stay in Sri Lanka, and the airline you check in with at Barcelona or Toulouse will confirm it before accepting your bags for Colombo.

The single most important point for anyone living in Andorra is that the passport decides everything. Fewer than half of the Principality's residents are Andorran citizens; the rest are mainly Spanish, Portuguese and French. A Spanish or French neighbour benefits from the waiver, a Portuguese one does not, and an Andorran applies under the standard rate.

The tourist option is the one for holidays, visiting friends, wellness stays and sporting or cultural events. Trail runners and cyclists from Andorra who enter races abroad can do so in Sri Lanka on a tourist ETA, since taking part in sporting competitions is a recognised tourist purpose.

Bankers, retailers and hotel owners travelling to negotiate, attend a conference or receive short training need the business option. No form of employment or self-employment is allowed on the tourist authorisation, and it is not meant for people intending to live on the island through back-to-back visits.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Andorran citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

An Andorran tourist is allowed 30 days from first arrival. Because reaching Colombo takes the best part of a day and a night, trips from Andorra tend to be long, often three weeks, and the allowance accommodates that without difficulty.

Two entries are permitted inside the 30 days. You could spend a fortnight in Sri Lanka, hop to the Maldives and re-enter for a last few days in Galle, but the return visit is granted only what remains of the original period.

The approval remains valid for travel for six months after it is issued, so applying well before a winter departure is sensible. Whatever conditions are printed on the approval notice are the ones that count at the border.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Andorran citizens

Everything Andorran passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Andorran passport holders

  • An Andorran passport with six months' validity remaining on the date you land — a residence permit or identity document issued in Andorra is not a substitute
  • Both surnames, where the passport shows two, entered together in the order printed and without the linking i sometimes used in Catalan
  • Catalan characters simplified to match the passport's coded lines, so Núria becomes NURIA, Lluís becomes LLUIS and a ç is typed as C
  • The passport number taken from the photo page, not a census or resident registration number
  • A credit or debit card that your Andorran bank has opened up for international online payments
  • An email address you will be able to read on the road, as that is where the approval is delivered
  • The date you expect to arrive and your first accommodation in Sri Lanka
  • Proof of a return or onward flight and of funds for the stay, which can be requested at immigration
  • Each child entered with their own passport; no government fee is charged for under-12s on a tourist stay

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Approval for Andorran applicants generally comes through in a day or two. Apply at least three to five days before you leave home, and remember that home is several hours from the airport: if you travel down to Barcelona the day before, count from then.

Andorra's working year is shaped by snow. With the ski season running from December into April, many residents take their main holiday in May, June, October or November, and those are the months when applications from the Principality bunch together. Applying two weeks ahead removes any pressure.

Renewing an Andorran passport means a visit to the government offices in Andorra la Vella, and the replacement carries a different number. Do this before applying if your passport is close to the six-month threshold, since an ETA tied to the old booklet is no use with the new one.

On arrival

What Andorran citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Andorra

Andorra has no direct air link to Sri Lanka or to any long-haul hub. Travellers go by road to Barcelona El Prat, roughly three hours by coach, or to Toulouse-Blagnac, a similar distance to the north, and fly from there with one connection. Barcelona has the wider choice of airlines; Toulouse can be convenient when the Spanish road is busy or snowbound.

  • Andorra la Vella — Barcelona (BCN) by coach, then Colombo via Doha with Qatar Airways
  • Barcelona — Colombo via Dubai with Emirates or via Abu Dhabi with Etihad Airways
  • Barcelona — Colombo via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines
  • Andorra la Vella — Toulouse (TLS) by coach, then Colombo via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines
About 3 hours by road to Barcelona, then 14 to 16 hours with one connection

Best time to go

When to travel from Andorra

For Andorrans the question is less when Sri Lanka is at its best than when they can get away. The island's prime season on the south and west coasts, December to March, is exactly when Grandvalira and the other resorts are at full stretch and most people in the Principality are working.

May and June, after the lifts close, are a natural window. The south-west monsoon is arriving by then, so point your trip at the east coast, where Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay are entering their dry season, and add the Cultural Triangle, which stays relatively dry.

October and November, the other quiet spell at home, coincide with inter-monsoon showers in Sri Lanka. Rain tends to come in afternoon bursts, prices are lower and sites are uncrowded, and by late November the whale-watching boats are running again from Mirissa.

If you can leave in winter, around Christmas or the March holiday for Constitution Day, you will find the classic beach weather in the south. Sri Lanka is four and a half hours ahead of Andorra in winter and three and a half in summer, and the temperature change on arrival can exceed thirty degrees.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Andorran citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Andorra — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Applying by residence instead of nationality

Living in Andorra does not make you Andorran for Sri Lanka's purposes. Residents with Spanish, Portuguese, French or other passports must select the nationality printed on their own passport, and the charge that applies will follow from that choice.

Assuming the Spanish waiver covers Andorra

Because so much in Andorra runs through Spain, from airports to travel agencies, people assume the same terms apply. An Andorran passport is treated separately and is charged the standard government rate.

Timing the application to the flight, not the road

Winter closures and traffic at the border can add hours to the drive, and many travellers go down the night before. If your approval is still pending when you leave the Principality, you have less time than you think.

Adding the Catalan i between surnames

In everyday use many Andorrans join their surnames with i. Unless your passport prints it, leave it out, and follow the capital letters of the machine-readable lines for the exact spelling.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Andorran citizens

No Sri Lankan mission is based in Andorra la Vella, and the Principality is covered by the embassy in Paris. An Andorran tourist has no need to travel there or write to it, because the ETA application is handled online. The embassy's role is limited to consular matters beyond the electronic authorisation.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Andorran citizens

The questions Andorran passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes. Andorran citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, commonly described as a Sri Lanka visa, before they travel. The tourist ETA allows a 30-day stay with two entries and is applied for online against your passport number.

The rules for Spanish nationals. Sri Lanka goes by the passport, so a Spanish citizen resident in Andorra applies as Spanish and comes under the waiver of the government charge that Spain has had since 25 May 2026. The ETA is still required.

Yes. Andorra is not on the waiver list, so the standard government charge applies, apart from children under 12 on a tourist stay. The total payable, including our service fee, appears in the live prices shown on this page.

By road to Barcelona or Toulouse, then by air with one connection in the Gulf or Istanbul. Allow about three hours for the transfer to the airport and a further 14 to 16 hours for the flights and layover.

A tourist ETA gives 30 days from the date of first arrival. Both permitted entries must take place in that time. Anyone wanting to stay beyond it has to secure an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla.

May and June suit the east coast, which is dry and sunny while the south-west has its monsoon. October and November are showery but quiet. If you can get leave in winter, the south and west coasts are at their best from December to March.

As the passport prints them, minus accents and special characters. Follow the machine-readable lines at the foot of the photo page, enter both surnames if two are shown, and do not add a connecting i that the passport omits.

Three to five days before leaving home is the minimum we suggest, and two weeks is better in the May and autumn holiday periods. Most decisions arrive within a day or two, but timing cannot be promised.
