Overview
Italians have a particular way of doing Sri Lanka. The tour comes first, a week or ten days by car through Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa, Kandy and the tea estates, and the sea comes afterwards, often not in Sri Lanka at all but at a resort in the Maldives. That two-part trip is a staple of Italian travel agencies and one of the most requested viaggi di nozze for couples who marry in late summer.
There is another side to the relationship. Italy hosts one of the largest Sri Lankan communities in Europe, with long-established populations in Milan, Rome, Naples and Verona. Many members of that community have become Italian citizens, and their children have grown up Italian, so flights to Colombo carry a steady number of Italian passport holders going to visit family.
All of them need an Electronic Travel Authorisation. In Italy it is normally called the visto, sometimes the visto elettronico, and travel agents use both terms. It is an approval obtained online and tied to the passport number, and it has to exist before you reach the check-in desk at Fiumicino or Malpensa.

Eligibility
Yes, Italians need it. Italy is one of the 40 countries whose citizens have paid no government charge for a tourist ETA since 25 May 2026, and the change was widely reported at home as the end of the visto. The authorisation was not withdrawn. Italian travellers still apply and still need the approval in hand before boarding.
Italians of Sri Lankan origin who travel on an Italian passport are foreign nationals at the Sri Lankan border and need the ETA like anyone else. Sri Lankan nationals living in Italy on a permesso di soggiorno are in a different position altogether, and residents of Italy holding a third country's passport apply under that nationality, with whatever charge applies to it.
The tourist ETA suits a guided tour, a honeymoon, an Ayurveda cure, a surf holiday or a family visit. Italians attending trade meetings, a congress or a short professional course need the business option. That includes people in the textile, tea and gemstone trades, who have traditionally travelled to Sri Lanka from northern Italy.
Work of any kind is excluded, including unpaid help in a guesthouse or a friend's restaurant. Italian photographers, journalists and documentary makers on assignment need permission from the Sri Lankan government in advance, as do Italians going to work with charities and non-governmental organisations.
Stay & validity
An Italian tourist receives 30 days from first arrival, with two entries. The double entry could have been designed for the Italian itinerary: tour Sri Lanka, fly to the Maldives for a week, then return to Colombo for the flight home. The return counts as the second entry and is covered only if it falls inside the same 30 days.
Do the arithmetic before booking. Ten days on tour plus seven in the Maldives plus a final night in Negombo is comfortably within the limit. A longer programme, or one that begins with a few days in Sri Lanka before a two-week cruise elsewhere, can push the return past day 30, and at that point the ETA no longer covers you.
Approval is valid for travel for six months, which suits honeymoon planning done well ahead of the wedding. Your passport must have six months left on arrival. Italian adult passports last ten years, but those for children aged three to seventeen last five and those for under-threes only three, so family documents need checking one by one.
A stay beyond 30 days requires an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration, based at Battaramulla near Colombo, applied for before the period ends. Italians spending a winter in Sri Lanka, or visiting relatives for a couple of months, should plan for that step instead of assuming the second entry provides extra time.

Requirements
Everything Italian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Italian applications are typically approved in a day or two. Colombo is three and a half hours ahead of Rome in summer and four and a half in winter, so anything submitted in the Italian afternoon tends to be processed on the next working day in Sri Lanka. That is the common experience and not a fixed timetable.
Three to five days before departure is the minimum to allow. Many Italians leave the visto to their travel agent, which works provided someone has actually confirmed it. Ask for a copy of the approval, check the passport number on it yourself and keep it with your tickets.
August is the month to be careful. Offices, agencies and much of the country close around Ferragosto, and anyone leaving in the second half of the month should have the ETA settled before the shutdown. The Christmas-to-Epifania period is the other pressure point, coinciding with high season on the Sri Lankan south coast.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
Italy currently has no regular nonstop service to Colombo, so travellers connect once. The Gulf carriers and Turkish Airlines cover most Italian airports between them, which means that someone starting from Venice, Bologna or Naples can often avoid going through Rome or Milan first. Organised tours usually specify the airline, and the connection point varies with the operator.
Best time to go
Italy takes its main holiday in August, and that shapes everything. August is monsoon season on the south-west coast, which is one reason the Italian formula pairs a cultural tour of the interior with beach time elsewhere. The Cultural Triangle is dry and manageable in August, Kandy holds the Esala Perahera around then, and the east coast at Trincomalee and Pasikudah is in its best months.
Winter is the opposite picture. From Christmas to Epifania and on through February and March, the south and west are at their finest, with settled weather in Galle, Tangalle and Mirissa. Italians with flexibility over dates get more from a January or February trip than from the crowded fortnight around New Year.
Spring offers the ponti. The run of public holidays on 25 April, 1 May and 2 June tempts many Italians into a long-haul week, but it falls at the turn of the season in Sri Lanka and just after the mid-April New Year closures. The hill country and the ancient cities remain good choices then, the southern beaches less reliably so.
For honeymooners marrying in September, October brings inter-monsoon showers across the island, usually short and in the afternoon. It is a quieter and cheaper time to travel, and a tour through the interior loses little. Anyone set on guaranteed beach weather may prefer to wait until December.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Italy — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
The combined Sri Lanka and Maldives trip is where Italians most often slip. The 30 days keep running while you are in the Maldives, and the return to Colombo must happen before they end. A third arrival in Sri Lanka on the same ETA is not possible, so stopover plans need checking too.
Italian women keep their birth surname on official documents, but honeymoon bookings are sometimes made in the husband's name. The ETA must carry the surname in the passport. A booking for Signora Rossi and a passport for Bianchi is a problem best solved before departure.
Travel agents in Italy often handle the visto as part of a package, and clients assume it is done. Mistakes in a passport number or date of birth made by a third party are still your problem at the airport. Ask to see the approval and read every line.
Italians travel around Europe and to several Mediterranean countries on the identity card and some forget it has limits. Sri Lanka requires a passport, valid for six months from arrival, and the ETA is attached to that passport alone. A minor's short-lived passport deserves the same check.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Sri Lanka is represented in Italy by its embassy in Rome and a Consulate General in Milan. Italian holidaymakers have no need to approach either office for an ETA, which is requested and granted online. Both mainly serve the resident Sri Lankan community and handle matters that go beyond an ordinary visit.
FAQs
The questions Italian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Italians need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for Sri Lanka, the online approval known in Italy as the visto. It must be obtained before departure. The government charge on tourist ETAs has been waived for Italian citizens since 25 May 2026, but the ETA remains obligatory.
Yes. The 2026 change removed the government charge for Italians on a tourist ETA and left the requirement in place. A service fee for our application assistance applies, and you can see the live prices on this page.
Yes, once. The tourist ETA allows two entries, so the usual Italian itinerary of a Sri Lanka tour, a week in the Maldives and a return to Colombo is covered, as long as you re-enter within 30 days of your first arrival.
No. An identity card is valid only for certain European and nearby destinations. Sri Lanka requires a passport with six months of validity from the date of arrival, and the ETA is linked to its number.
Thirty days from the first arrival. Time spent outside the country between the two entries still counts towards those 30 days. To remain longer you need an extension approved by the immigration department in Sri Lanka.
Confirm that it has been done and ask for the approval document. Check that your name, date of birth and passport number are exactly right. If the agency does not include it, you can apply yourself online in a few minutes.
If you enter Sri Lanka on your Italian passport, you need an ETA in the same way as any other Italian citizen. The authorisation is tied to the passport you present, so apply with the Italian passport details if that is the document you will travel on.
Yes, every child must be included in an application with an individual passport. Children under 12 are not charged the government fee on a tourist ETA of up to 30 days. Check expiry dates closely, because Italian passports for minors are valid for three or five years only.
Your nationality is already set to Italy. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
