Important for Belgian citizens
Since 25 May 2026 Sri Lanka has waived its government charge on tourist ETAs for Belgian citizens. The ETA itself is still required before travel.
Overview
Belgians are seasoned long-haul travellers, and Sri Lanka has become a favourite for those who want more than a beach: a rail journey through tea plantations, a climb up Sigiriya, a safari in Yala and a few days by the Indian Ocean, all within one compact island. Tour operators in Flanders and Wallonia alike sell it as a two-week circuit, and independent travellers from Ghent to Liège build the same loop themselves.
Whichever way you travel, an Electronic Travel Authorisation has to be in place before you board at Zaventem. Many Belgians search for it as a visum or visa for Sri Lanka, and the ETA is the document those searches are looking for. It is requested online, approved electronically and linked to your passport, so there is no need to visit the embassy in Brussels.
Belgium is one of the 40 countries for which Sri Lanka has waived its government charge on tourist ETAs since 25 May 2026. The authorisation is still compulsory, and a service fee applies when we prepare and check the application for you, but the government portion is no longer collected from Belgian tourists. The details below cover what that means in practice, along with the passport and payment points that trip Belgian applicants up.
At a glance
Eligibility
Yes, without exception. A Belgian passport gives visa-free access to a long list of countries, which leads some travellers to assume Sri Lanka is among them. It is not: every foreign visitor needs an ETA, and the waiver introduced in 2026 removed a charge for Belgians, not the requirement.
For a holiday, a visit to friends or family, an Ayurveda cure or a sporting or cultural event, the tourist ETA is the right choice. Belgians travelling for supplier meetings in Colombo's garment or tea sectors, a conference or a short training course of under a month need the business option. The purpose you declare should match what you will really be doing.
Some activities fall outside the online ETA altogether. Employment of any kind is excluded, paid or not, and so is settling in the country through back-to-back visits. Reporters and documentary makers for VRT, RTBF or any other outlet need prior government approval, as do staff of the many NGOs headquartered in Brussels who plan to work in the field.
Children are included in the family's application and need their own passports. Belgian minors often travel within Europe on a Kids-ID, which carries no weight outside the countries that accept Belgian identity cards. For Sri Lanka each child needs a passport, and since no government charge is taken from Belgian tourists of any age, the only question is getting the document in time.
Stay & validity
A tourist ETA allows Belgian visitors 30 days in Sri Lanka, counted from the first arrival, with two entries. That second entry is useful for the classic Belgian combination of a Sri Lanka circuit and a few nights in the Maldives, as long as the return to Colombo falls within the same 30 days. On re-entry you receive the days that remain, not another 30.
After approval you have six months in which to make your first arrival, so applying when you book in the autumn for a February departure is perfectly workable. Where the wording on your approval sets a condition, that wording takes precedence.
Belgian adult passports are valid for seven years and minors' passports for five, shorter than in most neighbouring countries. Sri Lanka asks for six months of validity from the day you land, so a passport in its final year deserves a second look before you apply. If the commune issues you a new one, its number will be different and the ETA has to be requested again against the new document.
Wanting to stay longer than 30 days, for a sabbatical or a long winter away, means applying for an extension at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla, just outside Colombo. That request is made in Sri Lanka, before the date stamped in your passport passes.

Requirements
Everything Belgian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Applications from Belgium are normally approved within a day or two. That is the usual pattern and not a guarantee, and an application with a name or passport number that does not match the document can take longer or have to be made again.
We recommend applying three to five days before departure at the latest. Colombo is four and a half hours ahead of Brussels in winter and three and a half in summer, so a request sent on a weekday morning in Belgium still reaches Sri Lanka within its working day, while one sent after dinner does not.
Allow extra margin before the krokusvakantie and the two-week carnival break in French-speaking schools, before Easter and before Christmas, when departures from Belgium peak along with the season on Sri Lanka's south coast. Organised groups should apply together well ahead, so that a single problem passport does not hold up everyone's travel documents the day before the coach leaves for the airport.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
No airline flies nonstop between Belgium and Sri Lanka, so Belgian travellers change once on the way. From Brussels Airport the Gulf carriers and Turkish Airlines offer the smoothest connections to Colombo, and the high-speed rail links from Brussels-Midi put Paris Charles de Gaulle within easy reach for those who prefer the SriLankan Airlines service from there on the days it operates. Travellers from Antwerp, Liège or Charleroi generally start at Zaventem.
Best time to go
The Belgian winter, grey and damp from November to March, coincides with the dry season on Sri Lanka's west and south coasts and in the hill country. This is the period for the classic circuit: Negombo or Colombo, the Cultural Triangle, Kandy, the train to Ella and then the beaches between Tangalle and Galle. Mirissa's whale-watching boats run from November to April.
School holidays shape most Belgian family trips, and the two main communities no longer share a calendar. Flemish schools keep a one-week krokusvakantie and two weeks at Easter, while French-speaking schools now take two weeks in late February and early March and two more in spring. Both carnival breaks fall squarely in the south-west dry season, and the longer Francophone break is enough for a full island circuit.
July and August are monsoon months on the south-west side, which is exactly when Belgian summer holidays fall. Go east instead: Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah have calm seas, Arugam Bay has its surf season, and the Cultural Triangle stays largely dry. The Kandy Esala Perahera in July or August gives a summer trip a centrepiece that winter visitors miss.
The autumn break around All Saints' Day lands in the inter-monsoon weeks, when showers are short but heavy and can occur on either coast. Sites are quieter then, so it suits flexible travellers more than those set on beach days. Keep an eye on Poya days too: each full moon is a public holiday when alcohol is not sold, which matters if you had a celebration dinner in mind.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Belgium — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
Belgians cross most of Europe with nothing but an identity card, and a few arrive at check-in for Colombo with the same habit. The ETA is issued against a passport number, and the airline will not accept an eID for a flight to Sri Lanka. Check that every traveller has a passport, children included, before you begin the application.
Van Den Berghe, Vandenberghe and Van den Berghe are three different surnames to a border system. Type the name with exactly the spaces your passport shows, and resist the urge to tidy the capitals. The same applies to French compound names such as de Callataÿ or Le Clercq.
The standard Belgian debit card works everywhere at home, but an online payment to an international merchant needs the Visa Debit, Mastercard Debit or credit card function. If your card shows only the Bancontact logo, the payment will fail at the last step. Use a different card and keep your bank's confirmation app within reach.
Because Belgian passports expire after seven years, not ten, travellers used to comparing notes with Dutch or French friends can misjudge how long theirs has left. Sri Lanka needs six months from arrival. A passport renewed after the ETA was granted leaves that ETA attached to a cancelled number, and a fresh application is the only fix.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Sri Lanka's embassy in Brussels also handles relations with the European Union and neighbouring Luxembourg. Belgian tourists have no reason to go there for an ETA: nothing is submitted in person and no passport is handed over. The embassy is the contact for visa categories that the online system does not cover, such as residence, and for activities needing prior clearance.
FAQs
The questions Belgian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Yes, Belgian citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling, which is what most people mean by a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa. Since 25 May 2026 Sri Lanka has waived its government charge on the tourist ETA for Belgians, but the authorisation itself remains mandatory. It allows 30 days and two entries.
The government charge is waived for Belgian tourists, so nothing is collected for that part. A service fee still applies when you use our application assistance, which covers checking your details against your passport and submitting the request. You can see the amount in the live prices shown on this page.
No. The eID is accepted in the EU and a handful of nearby countries, but not in Sri Lanka. You need a passport with at least six months of validity from your arrival date, and children need their own passport instead of a Kids-ID.
Adult passports last seven years and minors' passports five. Sri Lanka requires six months of remaining validity on arrival, so check the expiry date before applying. If you renew, the new passport has a new number and the earlier ETA cannot be carried over.
Thirty days from the day of first arrival. Two entries are allowed within that period, which covers a side trip to the Maldives or southern India. Staying longer requires an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla.
Payment is by Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card. A Belgian debit card co-branded with Visa Debit or Mastercard Debit will work, whereas one limited to Bancontact will not. Have itsme or your card reader ready to confirm the transaction.
Not at present. Belgian travellers connect in Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, with a total journey of around 13 to 15 hours. An alternative is the train to Paris Charles de Gaulle for a SriLankan Airlines departure when one is scheduled.
Yes. Conferences, seminars, workshops and business meetings fall under the business option, not the tourist one. Choose it at the start of the application and describe the purpose accurately. A tourist ETA used for business activity is outside its conditions.
Your nationality is already set to Belgium. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
