Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Canadian citizens

Canada's connection to Sri Lanka is personal in a way few other Western countries can match. The Greater Toronto Area is home to one of the largest Sri Lankan communities outside South Asia, concentrated in Scarborough, Markham and Brampton, and a large share of Canadian arrivals in Colombo are people going to see parents, grandparents and cousins. Flights fill up around weddings, temple festivals and the long summer break.

Alongside the family traffic there is a growing number of Canadians with no ties to the island who go for the same reasons as anyone else: a winter escape that is warmer and more varied than a week in Mexico or Cuba, wildlife in Yala and Wilpattu, surfing, and the hill-country railway. Retirees from British Columbia and the Prairies increasingly spend a month or more of the winter there.

Both groups need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before departure. Canadians tend to call it the Sri Lanka visa or tourist visa, and the name eTA causes mild confusion because Canada runs its own unrelated eTA for visitors arriving in Canada. The Sri Lankan one is issued by Sri Lanka, attached to your passport number, and checked by the airline before you leave Pearson, Trudeau or Vancouver.

Eligibility

Do Canadian citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Canadians do need it. Canada appears on the list of 40 countries whose citizens stopped being charged the government fee for a tourist ETA on 25 May 2026, and word spread quickly through community networks in Toronto that the visa was gone. Only the government charge went. An approved ETA is still required of every Canadian visitor.

Canadians of Sri Lankan origin should think about which document they will present. If you enter Sri Lanka as a Canadian, on your Canadian passport, you are a foreign national for immigration purposes and the ETA applies to you whatever your birthplace. Permanent residents of Canada who hold another country's passport apply under that nationality, not as Canadians.

The tourist ETA covers visiting family and friends, which is the purpose most Canadian applicants declare, together with holidays, sightseeing, medical and Ayurvedic treatment, and attending sporting or cultural events. A Canadian flying out for company meetings, a conference or a training session of under a month needs the business option.

It does not cover working, paid or unpaid, or running a business while you are there. Nor is it intended for Canadians who plan to spend most of each year in Sri Lanka by leaving and returning repeatedly. Reporters, film crews and staff of Canadian aid organisations need clearance from the Sri Lankan government beforehand, which the online ETA does not provide.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Canadian citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

Canadians receive 30 days from first arrival with two entries. For a family visit timed around a wedding that is usually enough, and the second entry lets you slip across to Chennai or Malé in the middle. It does not extend the stay: re-entry is for whatever is left of the 30 days that began when you first landed.

An approved ETA stays valid for travel for six months after issue. Canadians often book far ahead to manage the cost of such a long journey, so applying early is realistic, but do not apply so early that the six months expire before you depart. Whatever conditions appear on your approval are the ones immigration will apply.

The passport must have six months left when you arrive. Adult Canadians can choose a five-year or a ten-year passport and many forget which they picked, while children under 16 can only be issued five-year passports. Passport Canada processing slows noticeably before March break and summer, so a renewal needs to start well ahead.

Thirty days is where Canadian snowbirds and long-stay family visitors run into difficulty. Anyone who wants to stay longer has to apply for an extension to the Department of Immigration and Emigration at Battaramulla, close to Colombo, before the initial period finishes. Booking a seven-week stay and hoping to sort it out later is a risk.

Everything Canadian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Canadian passport holders

  • A Canadian passport valid for six months past your arrival date in Sri Lanka, whether it is a five-year or ten-year book
  • Your full legal name as shown on the passport, which for many Canadians of Tamil or Sinhalese origin means a long name that airline systems routinely truncate
  • French accents and hyphens handled as in the machine-readable zone, so Hélène Côté-Tremblay follows the unaccented lines at the bottom of the photo page
  • The passport number taken from the document itself, particularly if you renewed recently and still have the old number saved in an airline profile
  • A credit card or a Visa Debit or Debit Mastercard, because Interac-only bank cards do not work for an international online payment
  • An unambiguous arrival date, entered with care because Canadians use both day-first and month-first formats and the two are easy to confuse
  • A return or onward ticket, which Canadians visiting family on an open-ended plan sometimes lack and may be asked to show
  • The address where you will stay, including a relative's home address and phone number if you are not booking a hotel
  • An entry for each child with their own passport details, with children under 12 exempt from the government fee
  • Proof that you can support yourself during the visit, such as a recent statement from your Canadian bank

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Approvals for Canadians usually arrive within a day or two. Toronto is nine and a half hours behind Colombo in summer and ten and a half in winter, and Vancouver three hours further back, so an application made after dinner in Canada is dealt with during the Sri Lankan day while you are asleep. That is the normal experience, not a guaranteed one.

Apply three to five days before you fly as a bare minimum. Given the price of a ticket from Canada and how few alternative flights exist if you are denied boarding, most travellers are better off applying a few weeks ahead. Six months of validity gives you that room.

Leave a wider margin for travel at Christmas, during March break and through July and August. Those are peak months for Canadian family visits, and the December period is also the height of the tourist season on Sri Lanka's south coast, which pushes application numbers up from everywhere at once.

On arrival

What Canadian citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Canada

There are no nonstop flights between Canada and Sri Lanka. From Toronto and Montréal the usual pattern is one connection in the Gulf, through Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi, or in Istanbul. Some travellers go via London to pick up the SriLankan Airlines nonstop to Colombo. From Vancouver the Pacific route through Hong Kong or Singapore is often shorter than going east.

  • Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and Montréal (YUL) — Colombo (CMB) via Doha with Qatar Airways
  • Toronto and Montréal — Colombo via Dubai with Emirates
  • Toronto — Colombo via Abu Dhabi with Etihad
  • Toronto, Montréal and Vancouver — Colombo via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines
  • Vancouver (YVR) — Colombo via Hong Kong with Cathay Pacific, or via Singapore

Best time to go

When to travel from Canada

A Canadian winter is the strongest argument for going between December and March. Those months are dry on the west and south coasts, the sea off Mirissa and Unawatuna is calm, and the contrast with a Toronto or Winnipeg January needs no explanation. The weeks either side of Christmas are the most crowded and should be booked early.

March break is well placed. Mid-March is still inside the south-coast season and comes before the heat builds in April, so a ten-day family trip built around Galle, Yala and the tea country works well. It is a long way to travel for one week, and most Canadian families add days at one end.

Summer holidays, from late June to Labour Day, coincide with the south-west monsoon. Canadians visiting family in Colombo then will find it wet but perfectly liveable, and for beach time the east coast is the place: Nilaveli near Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay. The Kandy Esala Perahera usually falls in this period and is worth planning around.

For those heading north to Jaffna, the dry months from roughly February to September are the easiest. Jaffna's airport has regional flights from South India, and some Canadians of Tamil heritage route through Chennai for that reason. Wherever you go, allow two or three days to adjust to the time difference before any important family event.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Canadian citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Canada — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Confusing it with Canada's own eTA

Canadians hear the term eTA and think of the system used by visitors flying into Canada, which they never need themselves. Sri Lanka's ETA is a separate requirement that applies to Canadians travelling there, and holding a Canadian passport does not exempt anyone from it.

Shortening a long name

Tamil and Sinhalese names on Canadian passports can run to several words, and people are used to trimming them for forms at home. The ETA needs the name as the passport gives it. Initials, dropped patronymics and anglicised short forms all create a difference from the document.

Planning a stay longer than 30 days

Family visits from Canada often last six or eight weeks because of the distance. The ETA gives 30 days, and the second entry does not add more. A longer stay depends on an extension being granted in Sri Lanka, so do not treat it as automatic when booking the return flight.

Travelling on a five-year passport near its end

A Canadian who chose the five-year option, or a child who could only have one, reaches the six-month limit sooner than expected. Renewing after the ETA has been approved changes the passport number and means the ETA has to be obtained again.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Canadian citizens

Sri Lanka has a High Commission in Ottawa and a Consulate General in Toronto. Neither needs to be visited for an ETA, which Canadians apply for online from anywhere in the country. Members of the community deal with those offices for citizenship, documentation and other consular matters unrelated to a short visit.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Canadian citizens

The questions Canadian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Canadians need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for Sri Lanka, the online approval commonly described as a Sri Lanka visa. It has to be in place before you travel. Since 25 May 2026 the government charge on a tourist ETA has been waived for Canadian citizens, but the ETA is still mandatory.

No. Canada's eTA is for foreign visitors flying into Canada. Sri Lanka's ETA is a separate authorisation that Canadians need in order to visit Sri Lanka. The names are similar, and that is the only connection.

If you are entering Sri Lanka on your Canadian passport, yes. You are treated as a foreign national and the ETA is linked to that passport. Your place of birth does not change the requirement.

Thirty days from first arrival, with two entries allowed inside that period. For longer family visits an extension must be requested from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Sri Lanka before the 30 days are up.

The waiver depends on citizenship, not residence. A permanent resident of Canada travelling on another country's passport applies under that nationality, and whether a government charge applies depends on that country's status.

No. Canadians reach Colombo with at least one connection, most often in Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, and total journey times from Toronto are typically 19 to 22 hours. From Vancouver, routes via Hong Kong or Singapore are competitive.

Three to five days ahead at the minimum, and several weeks ahead for Christmas, March break or summer travel. The approval is valid for travel for six months, so early application is practical.

Yes. Every child must be included in an application with their own passport. Children under 12 are not charged the government fee for a tourist ETA of up to 30 days, but they still need the authorisation.
