Overview
Long-haul leisure travel from Albania has grown quickly as Tirana's airport has expanded, and Sri Lanka now appears alongside the Maldives, Zanzibar and Thailand in the windows of agencies on Rruga e Kavajës. Honeymooners are the core of the market, often adding a week of temples, tea estates and safari to a few nights on a Maldivian atoll.
The document that makes the Sri Lankan part possible is the Electronic Travel Authorisation. Albanians generally call it the Sri Lanka visa, and agencies list it that way in their package inclusions. Strictly it is an electronic approval linked to your pasaportë number, issued before travel and verified by the airline when you check in.
Albania is not one of the 40 countries for which Sri Lanka waived the government charge in May 2026. An Albanian tourist application is therefore charged at the standard rate, and you should rely on the live prices shown on this page for the total. Below is what an applicant with an Albanian passport, whether living in Tirana, Milan or Athens, needs to get right.
At a glance
Eligibility
Albanian citizens need one for any short visit. The Albanian passport gives free movement into Schengen and several other regions, yet Sri Lanka makes no distinction between nationalities on this point and expects the ETA to be approved before departure.
A honeymoon, a family holiday, a surf camp, a wellness retreat or a visit to friends is covered by the tourist ETA. Trips for meetings, negotiations, conferences or brief training belong under the business option. Paid or unpaid work is excluded altogether, a point worth stating plainly for a nationality with a strong tradition of working abroad.
A large number of Albanians live in Italy and Greece, and some have naturalised there. Italian citizens fall within Sri Lanka's waiver of the government charge, whereas Greek and Albanian citizens do not. If you hold an Italian passport and choose to apply with it, you must also travel on it; an Italian residence permit in an Albanian passport changes nothing.
Couples sometimes overlook that each spouse needs an approval of their own, and that a baby or child travelling with them must be included too. For children below 12 the government fee is not charged on a tourist ETA lasting up to 30 days.
Stay & validity
With a tourist ETA an Albanian traveller may remain for 30 days, beginning on the date of first entry. It is a double-entry approval, which fits the standard honeymoon pattern of Colombo, Malé and Colombo again. On the return leg you receive whatever is left of the 30 days, so a late-trip stopover of two nights is easily covered.
The approval can be used at any point in the six months after it is issued, unless your approval states otherwise. Couples marrying in the Albanian summer wedding season and travelling in the autumn or winter can arrange the ETA early, alongside the rest of the wedding paperwork.
Sri Lanka's passport rule is six months of validity from arrival. Albanian biometric passports for adults are valid for ten years, but brides who intend to change their surname should think about sequence. A passport reissued in a married name carries a new number, and an ETA granted on the previous one will no longer match.

Requirements
Everything Albanian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
An Albanian application is generally approved inside a day or two. It is handled without any visit to a consulate, a relief in a country where the responsible Sri Lankan embassy is across the Adriatic. Treat the timescale as usual practice, never as a commitment.
Three to five days before the flight is the latest sensible moment to apply. Newlyweds leaving within days of the ceremony should do it well before the wedding week, when nobody has time to hunt for a passport or respond to an email asking for a clearer scan.
Demand peaks from December to March, overlapping the Albanian New Year holidays and the period when emigrants return home and then travel on. Colombo is four and a half hours ahead of Tirana in winter and three and a half in summer, so allow for replies arriving outside Albanian office hours.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
There is no nonstop service from Albania to Sri Lanka. From Tirana the established route is to Istanbul and then onwards to Colombo with Turkish Airlines, which keeps the whole journey on one booking. Albanians living in Italy or Greece have a wider choice, with Gulf airlines serving Rome, Milan and Athens. Travellers from Shkodër, Vlorë and Korçë all funnel through Tirana.
Best time to go
Albanian weddings cluster in July, August and September, when the diaspora is home. A honeymoon taken immediately afterwards meets the tail of the south-west monsoon, so couples travelling then are better served by the east coast around Pasikudah and Trincomalee, or by postponing the trip a few months.
Those who wait until winter get the classic version. Between December and March the beaches from Bentota round to Tangalle are dry, whales pass Mirissa, and the train from Kandy to Ella runs through clear hills. The holidays around New Year and the long weekend at the end of November for Independence and Liberation days are the favoured departure dates.
Spring brings a run of Albanian public holidays, including Summer Day on 14 March and Nevruz on 22 March, alongside Catholic and Orthodox Easter and the two Bajram festivals as they move through the calendar. March is still dry in the south-west and noticeably quieter than January.
Sri Lanka's festivals reward a little planning. Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April closes much of the country for a few days, Vesak lights up every town in May, and on the monthly Poya day no alcohol is sold. A honeymoon toast is best scheduled for another evening.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Albania — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
A bride who applies in her maiden name and then renews her passport after the wedding ends up with an ETA attached to a cancelled document. Either travel on the existing passport and change it afterwards, or renew first and apply with the new one.
A permesso di soggiorno or a Greek residence card has no bearing on the ETA. The waiver follows nationality alone. An Albanian citizen resident in Milan still applies as Albanian, at the standard rate, with the Albanian passport.
The Albanian alphabet's two marked letters do not appear in the machine-readable lines of the passport. Enter E and C. A surname such as Çaushi typed with the cedilla may fail to match the booking the airline holds.
Packages combining both countries are sold as one product, and clients can assume every formality is the same for each. The Sri Lankan ETA is a separate requirement that has to be approved in advance, so confirm in writing who is arranging it.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Albania is served by the Sri Lankan embassy in Rome, as there is no mission in Tirana. An ETA applicant has no dealings with it: there is no form to deliver, no interview and no passport to leave. Albanians living in Italy may find it useful for other consular matters.
FAQs
The questions Albanian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Yes. Albanian citizens must hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation, the online entry permit commonly called the Sri Lanka visa, before travelling. For tourism it allows 30 days and two entries.
No. Albania is not among the 40 nationalities covered since 25 May 2026, so the standard government rate applies to Albanian passports. The amount due is displayed in the live prices shown on this page.
The choice is yours, but it must be the passport you travel on. Italy is included in the waiver of the government charge and Albania is not, so the charge differs. Whichever you choose needs six months of validity on arrival.
Yes. The tourist ETA allows two entries, so one return from the Maldives is covered as long as it happens within 30 days of your first arrival. You are then admitted only for the days remaining.
None at present. The usual journey is Tirana to Istanbul and Istanbul to Colombo, taking around 12 to 14 hours in total. Some travellers cross to Italy or Greece first for a wider range of Gulf connections.
Most decisions arrive within one or two days. It is still wise to apply at least three to five days ahead, and earlier for winter travel, because processing times are not guaranteed.
After you know which passport you will travel on. If you will keep your current passport for the honeymoon, apply with it. If you are renewing in your married name first, wait for the new passport, since the ETA is tied to its number.
No. Employment, whether paid or unpaid, and self-employment are outside what a tourist ETA permits. Business meetings and conferences require the business option, and longer-term work needs a different status entirely.
Your nationality is already set to Albania. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
