Armenia has no coastline, which is part of why Sri Lanka's beaches appeal. Armenian citizens need an ETA approved before leaving Yerevan, giving 30 days and two entries, and second-passport holders should choose their document with care.

Overview
For a landlocked country with two closed land borders, almost every foreign holiday from Armenia begins at Zvartnots Airport. The Gulf has become the main gateway east, and from Dubai or Sharjah the Indian Ocean is a short hop further. Sri Lanka is a natural next step for Armenians who have done the Emirates and want warm sea with more to see inland.
Entry to Sri Lanka is controlled through an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Armenian travellers will often find it called a Sri Lanka visa on Russian-language and English-language sites alike, but it is an online approval linked to the passport, with nothing stamped in advance.
Armenia has an unusual feature that matters here: a large share of its citizens also hold a second nationality, most often Russian, French or American. Since Sri Lanka treats nationalities differently for charging purposes, the passport you choose to apply with has real consequences, and this page deals with that question directly.
At a glance
Eligibility
Every Armenian citizen needs an ETA to visit Sri Lanka, obtained before travel. That holds whether you are a first-time tourist from Yerevan, a student from Gyumri joining friends, or a member of the diaspora returning to the region on an Armenian document.
On an Armenian passport the standard government charge applies, because Armenia is not on the list of forty countries covered by the waiver in force since 25 May 2026. Russia, France and the United States are on that list. An Armenian who also holds one of those passports may apply with it and have the government charge waived, provided that same passport is the one carried on the trip and shown on arrival.
What you cannot do is mix documents. An ETA requested with a Russian passport is of no use to someone who then checks in with an Armenian one, and the reverse is equally true. Pick one passport, make sure it has six months left, and use it for the application, the ticket and the border.
A tourist ETA covers leisure travel, visits to friends and family, medical and wellness stays, and sporting or cultural events. Armenians travelling for jewellery or gem trading, IT contracts or conferences need the business option, since trade and business activity are excluded from tourist terms along with any kind of employment.
Stay & validity
The stay granted to an Armenian tourist is 30 days from first entry. A second entry is allowed during that period and receives only the days not yet used, which is worth knowing if you intend to add Malé or Chennai to the itinerary.
From the date of issue the authorisation is good for travel for six months. If you replace your passport within that time, for instance by moving from an older Armenian passport to a new biometric one, the approval does not carry over and you will need to apply afresh.
Sri Lanka looks for six months of validity beyond your arrival date. Armenian passports are generally issued for ten years, so the risk lies mainly with documents from around 2016 and 2017 and with children's passports. Anyone wishing to stay past 30 days applies for an extension at the Department of Immigration and Emigration head office in Battaramulla.

Requirements
Everything Armenian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Decisions for Armenian passport holders tend to arrive in a day or two. No promise of timing can be given, and an application that needs clarification may run longer.
The safest practice is to apply three to five days before you fly, and a full week ahead if you are leaving during the New Year holidays, when Armenia more or less shuts from 31 December until after Christmas on 6 January. Banks operate reduced hours in that stretch, and a card declined for an online payment is harder to sort out.
If you are deciding between two passports, settle it before you start. Changing your mind after payment means a completely new application, since details cannot be edited once the form has been submitted and the charge is not refunded or transferred.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
Yerevan has no nonstop link with Colombo. The usual pattern is a flight of about three hours to the United Arab Emirates or Qatar followed by an onward sector of four to five hours. Some Armenians living in Russia or Europe join the route from Moscow, Paris or another city instead, in which case the same ETA rules apply from wherever they depart.
Best time to go
Yerevan winters are dry, cold and often smoggy, and from December to March the contrast with Sri Lanka's south-west coast could hardly be greater. This is the season for Galle Fort, the beaches around Tangalle and safaris in Yala, with reliable sunshine and gentle seas.
Armenia's New Year and Christmas break, stretching across the first week of January, is the obvious window and the most expensive one. Travelling in the second half of January or in February brings the same weather with more choice of rooms.
July and August in Yerevan are fiercely hot, and Armenians who want to leave then should aim for Sri Lanka's east coast, which is in its dry season while the west is wet. The cooler hill country around Ella and Nuwara Eliya offers relief from heat of any kind, and visitors used to Dilijan will feel at home among the pines and mist.
Sri Lanka runs ninety minutes ahead of Armenia in every month, as neither country adjusts its clocks. Schedules through the Gulf frequently involve a departure from Zvartnots in the small hours, so plan a slow first day in Negombo or Colombo before heading inland.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Armenia — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
This is the characteristic Armenian error. A traveller applies with a Russian or French passport to benefit from the waiver, then packs the Armenian one. The authorisation and the document presented must match exactly.
Families often use both endings interchangeably in daily life. The form needs whichever version is printed in the passport, and the flight ticket should carry the same one.
Applying on 2 or 3 January for a flight later that week leaves no slack if your bank blocks the payment or a scan is rejected, because little in Armenia is open to help.
Diaspora Armenians sometimes select Armenia out of habit while travelling on a different passport. The nationality chosen must be that of the travel document.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Armenia is covered by the Sri Lankan embassy in Moscow, as there is no resident mission in Yerevan. Because tourist ETAs are processed online, Armenian applicants do not deal with the embassy at any stage.
FAQs
The questions Armenian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Armenian citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling to Sri Lanka. It is frequently called a visa, and it grants 30 days with two entries.
Either is acceptable, but you must travel on the one you apply with. Russia is covered by the government-charge waiver and Armenia is not, so the choice affects what you pay.
No. The waiver that began on 25 May 2026 lists forty countries and Armenia is not among them. The standard government rate applies, as shown in the live prices on this page.
There are none at present. Most travellers change once in Dubai, Sharjah or Doha and reach Colombo in roughly nine to twelve hours.
Up to 30 days counted from the first arrival. Staying longer requires an extension granted by the immigration department near Colombo.
Not for the ETA, so long as the application copies the passport. The card only needs to be valid for online payment and does not have to match the passport spelling.
No. Meetings, negotiations and conferences fall under the business option. A tourist authorisation is limited to leisure, family, wellness, sport and cultural visits.
Children must be named in an application with their own passports. Those under twelve are not charged the government fee on a tourist ETA of up to 30 days.
Your nationality is already set to Armenia. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
