Important for Turkish citizens
Turkey is among the 40 countries whose tourist ETA has carried no Sri Lankan government charge since 25 May 2026. An approved ETA is still compulsory, and our service fee applies — check the live prices shown on this page.
Overview
Turkish holidaymakers have looked east in growing numbers over the past decade, first to Thailand and Bali and more recently to Sri Lanka. The island is a favourite of Istanbul honeymoon planners, who pair a week of temples, tea estates and safari with a few nights in the Maldives, and Turkish Airlines' service from Istanbul Airport to Colombo has made the journey far simpler than it used to be.
In May 2026 Sri Lanka added Turkey to a list of forty countries whose citizens are not charged the government fee on a tourist ETA. Turkish travel sites reported this as vizesiz seyahat, travel without a visa, and that description needs correcting. The Electronic Travel Authorisation, the thing most people mean by a Sri Lanka visa, is still required of every Turkish visitor.
So the task has not gone away; one element of its cost has. Below you will find how the waiver works for a Turkish passport, what the ETA permits, and the details peculiar to Turkish documents and holiday patterns that are worth getting right.
At a glance
Eligibility
Yes, and without exception. Every Turkish citizen entering Sri Lanka for a short stay must hold an ETA approved in advance. Turkish Airlines staff verify it at the gate in Istanbul, and travellers who assumed the waiver made the step unnecessary have been turned away from the flight.
The waiver applies to the government charge on tourist ETAs. If your trip is a holiday, a honeymoon, a visit to friends, a surf or yoga stay, medical or Ayurvedic treatment, or attendance at a sporting or cultural event, that charge is not collected on a Turkish passport. Our own fee for handling the application remains, and the amount is given in the live prices on this page.
Holders of the green hususi passport or the grey service passport are used to easier entry rules in Europe and sometimes expect the same here. For a private holiday in Sri Lanka the ETA requirement applies to foreign nationals generally, so apply with whichever passport you will carry and do not rely on its colour.
Turkish textile, construction and tea-machinery firms are active in South Asia, and their staff should choose the business option for meetings, fairs, conferences and short training. Working, trading or settling in Sri Lanka through repeated visits is not permitted on a tourist ETA.
Stay & validity
A Turkish tourist is granted 30 days from the day of first arrival. The authorisation allows two entries, which is what makes the popular Sri Lanka and Maldives combination possible on one approval, though the return leg through Colombo is admitted only for the balance of those 30 days.
The ETA stays valid for travel for six months after it is issued. Couples who book a honeymoon months ahead of the wedding can apply early, on the understanding that the conditions stated on the approval are final.
Passport length deserves a careful look in Turkey, because citizens select how many years to buy when they apply and many choose a short term to keep the cost down. A passport bought for one or two years can easily fall below Sri Lanka's requirement of six months' validity on arrival, and renewing it means a new number and a new ETA. Anyone intending to stay past 30 days must obtain an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla.

Requirements
Everything Turkish passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Most Turkish applicants hear back within a day or two. The removal of the government charge has not changed how applications are examined, and timing cannot be promised in any individual case.
Submit at least three to five days before the flight. The dangerous moment in Turkey is the eve of a bayram: when Ramazan Bayramı or Kurban Bayramı is joined to a weekend to make a nine-day break, bookings surge within hours of the announcement and many travellers apply at the last minute. Apply as soon as the dates are confirmed.
The two-week sömestr tatili that begins in late January is the other pressure point, and it coincides with the busiest part of Sri Lanka's season. Families should have their approvals a week ahead.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
Istanbul is one of the main gateways to Sri Lanka for the whole of Europe, and Turkish travellers have the advantage of starting there. Turkish Airlines flies from Istanbul Airport to Colombo, a journey of about eight hours when it runs nonstop, and passengers from Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and Adana connect on domestic flights. Those leaving from Sabiha Gökçen usually travel through the Gulf.
Best time to go
The sömestr break is ideal. Late January and early February bring settled, sunny weather to Sri Lanka's west and south coasts while Istanbul is wet and Ankara is under snow, and two weeks is enough for a full circuit of the Cultural Triangle, the hill country and the beach.
Religious holidays move about eleven days earlier each year, so their fit with the island changes. For the next several years both bayrams fall in the first half of the year. A spring holiday still catches the south-west in good condition, while one that falls from May onwards is better spent on the east coast at Trincomalee or Pasikudah.
The long summer school holiday from mid-June to mid-September overlaps with the south-west monsoon. Turkish surfers already know that this is when Arugam Bay works best, and the Kandy Esala Perahera in July or August rewards those who go inland. Republic Day at the end of October falls in the showery inter-monsoon weeks.
Turkey abandoned seasonal clock changes in 2016, leaving a constant gap of two and a half hours with Sri Lanka. The overnight flight from Istanbul lands in the early morning, so arrange an early check-in or a first night near Negombo.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Turkey — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
The most frequent Turkish error since May 2026. The charge was removed, the ETA was not, and the airline will ask to see an approval before issuing a boarding pass for Colombo.
Şahin, Çağlar and Öztürk should be entered as SAHIN, CAGLAR and OZTURK, as the machine-readable lines show them. Forms that receive the accented versions can store them wrongly.
A passport bought for a single year may have been used for one trip and forgotten. If less than six months remain when you reach Colombo, the ETA cannot rescue the journey.
After marriage a Turkish woman may take her husband's surname or keep her own alongside it. Apply in the name printed in the passport that will be used for the honeymoon, and book the ticket to match.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
The embassy in Ankara handles visa categories that fall outside the online system. Turkish tourists applying for an ETA do not need to visit it or send their passport anywhere.
FAQs
The questions Turkish passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Turkish citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling, although the government charge for tourists is now waived. The ETA allows 30 days and two entries.
No. Sri Lanka stopped collecting its government charge from Turkish tourists on 25 May 2026, but an approved ETA is still a condition of travel.
Sri Lanka requires an ETA from foreign nationals visiting for a short private stay, and you should not assume the hususi passport is exempt. Apply with the passport you intend to travel on.
The Sri Lankan government portion is waived for tourist ETAs on Turkish passports. A service fee for our assistance applies, and the live prices on this page show the current figure.
Turkish Airlines serves Colombo from Istanbul Airport. Depending on the schedule the flight may operate nonstop or with a stop in Malé, so check the routing when you book.
Yes. A tourist ETA is double entry, so a Turkish couple can spend time in Sri Lanka, fly to the Maldives and pass through Colombo again, provided everything fits inside 30 days from the first arrival.
Follow the two lines of capital letters at the bottom of your passport's photo page. They give the internationally readable version of your name, and that is the one to enter.
The process is the same and is done online. Apply with the passport you will travel on; both Turkey and Germany are on the waiver list, so the government charge is waived either way.
Your nationality is already set to Turkey. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
