Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Ecuadorian citizens

Not many Ecuadorians visit Sri Lanka each year, and those who do are often not starting from Ecuador at all. A large share live in Madrid, Milan, New York or Murcia and travel from there; others are students or professionals adding a stop to a trip through Asia. Wherever the journey begins, the entry rule is identical.

That rule is the Electronic Travel Authorisation. Ecuadorian nationals must have one approved before they travel, and airlines verify it at check-in. If you have been searching for a Sri Lanka visa for Ecuadorians, or an e-visa, this is the permit those searches lead to.

Ecuadorians tend to be careful with travel documents, having needed visas for much of the world. That experience helps. The ETA is far lighter than a consular visa — no interview, no bank letters to submit — but it is strict about one thing, which is that the details match your passport exactly.

Eligibility

Do Ecuadorian citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Yes, Ecuadorian citizens need an ETA, and there is no category of short visit that escapes it. Ecuador is not on the list of forty countries whose tourist ETAs have carried no government charge since 25 May 2026. The standard government rate is what an Ecuadorian passport attracts.

The diaspora makes one question common. An Ecuadorian who has naturalised in Spain, Italy or the United States, and who travels on that country's passport, applies as a national of that country — all three are on the waiver list. Someone holding only residence in those countries remains an Ecuadorian applicant on the standard rate.

A tourist ETA is right for a holiday, a visit to relatives or friends, a yoga or Ayurveda stay, or a sporting or cultural event. If the trip involves meetings with suppliers — Ecuador's flower, cocoa and shrimp exporters do business across Asia — a conference or brief training, apply under the business option.

Children under 12 of any nationality are spared the government fee on a tourist ETA of up to 30 days. Ecuadorian children nevertheless need their own passport and a place on an application; a cédula de menor does not serve.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Ecuadorian citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

An Ecuadorian tourist is granted 30 days. Within that time the ETA may be used for two arrivals, which is handy for a detour to the Maldives or southern India, but the second arrival inherits only the remainder of the 30 days.

From the day it is issued, the ETA is valid for travel for six months. If plans slip — a common enough event when a trip depends on leave from a job abroad — you do not have to reapply so long as you arrive inside that window on the same passport. The approval's printed conditions govern.

Passport validity deserves a second look. Sri Lanka requires six months from arrival, and Ecuadorian passports have been issued for more than one validity term, so do not assume yours has years left. Requests to stay beyond the granted period go to the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla, just outside Colombo.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Ecuadorian citizens

Everything Ecuadorian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Ecuadorian passport holders

  • An Ecuadorian passport valid at least six months past your arrival — the cédula that is sufficient for Colombia or Peru is not a passport substitute here
  • Two given names and two surnames where the passport prints them; Ecuadorian documents usually carry all four
  • Spelling taken from the passport, not from a Spanish NIE, a US green card or an Italian permesso, where names are sometimes truncated
  • The passport number from the photo page, re-read against the lower machine-readable line
  • A complete, sharp image of the photo page
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international online payments — one issued in Ecuador or in your country of residence will do
  • An email address you use regularly; if a relative applies for you, make sure the approval is forwarded
  • Your date of arrival and first address in Sri Lanka
  • A return or onward reservation and some proof of funds for the immigration officer
  • If you are departing from Ecuador, your yellow fever vaccination certificate where you have one, since the country has risk areas and health controls are separate from the ETA; verify the rule with your airline

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Ecuadorian applicants generally have an answer within a day or two. We advise three to five days of margin before the flight, and that margin is a minimum — the authorities do not commit to a turnaround, and a mismatch in names stops the clock.

Mainland Ecuador is ten and a half hours behind Colombo and the Galápagos eleven and a half. For the many Ecuadorians applying from Spain or Italy the gap shrinks to a few hours, and responses tend to feel quicker from there.

Ecuador's two school calendars create two rushes. Families on the Sierra timetable travel in July and August; those on the Costa timetable travel roughly between February and April. Add the Carnival and early-November long weekends, and there are several points in the year when applying a fortnight ahead is wise.

On arrival

What Ecuadorian citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Ecuador

Ecuador has no nonstop link to Sri Lanka. From Quito or Guayaquil the realistic routings cross to Madrid or Amsterdam and continue with a Gulf airline, or go north to Bogotá or Panama City for Turkish Airlines to Istanbul. Passengers from Cuenca, Manta or the Galápagos first fly to one of the two main airports.

  • Quito Mariscal Sucre (UIO) — Madrid with Iberia or Air Europa, then Doha or Dubai to Colombo
  • Guayaquil José Joaquín de Olmedo (GYE) — Madrid with Iberia or Air Europa, then a Gulf carrier
  • Quito or Guayaquil — Amsterdam with KLM, then onward via the Gulf or Istanbul
  • Quito (UIO) — Bogotá or Panama City, then Turkish Airlines to Istanbul and Colombo

Best time to go

When to travel from Ecuador

Families on the Sierra school calendar, with long holidays in July and August, should look east. Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah are dry and calm in those months, Arugam Bay has waves, and the Kandy Esala Perahera usually falls within the same holiday.

The Costa calendar frees up February to April, which coincides with the last and often loveliest part of the season on the south and west coasts. Galle, Mirissa and the hill railway to Ella are all at their best, though mid-April's New Year shuts many businesses for a few days.

Ecuadorians live on the equator and Sri Lanka lies only a little north of it, so day length barely changes and the sun is just as fierce. What differs is the monsoon pattern, with rain shifting from one side of the island to the other where Ecuador divides its climate by altitude.

Quiteños in particular should prepare for sea-level heat after life at 2,800 metres. The tea country around Nuwara Eliya offers relief and a landscape that looks oddly like the cloud forest near Mindo. On Poya full-moon days, public holidays each month, alcohol sales stop nationwide.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Ecuadorian citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Ecuador — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Taking the name from a residence card

Ecuadorians abroad often have a foreign ID that shortens or reorders their names, and they copy from it out of habit. The ETA is compared with the passport only. If the passport shows Luis Alberto Chicaiza Guamán, all four names go on the application.

Thinking residence in Europe changes the fee

The waiver of the government charge is for nationals of the listed countries. A Spanish or Italian residence permit does not make an Ecuadorian passport eligible. Only a passport of a listed country, used for the application and the trip, does.

Overlooking transit requirements in Europe

A change of planes in Madrid or Amsterdam is normally made airside, but an overnight stop, a terminal change or separate tickets can require you to enter the Schengen area. Ecuadorian passport holders should check that before booking, as the Sri Lankan ETA has no bearing on it.

Applying with a passport about to be renewed

If a renewal is coming, do it first. The ETA is recorded against a passport number, a new passport has a new number, and government charges paid on the old one are neither refunded nor carried over.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Ecuadorian citizens

Sri Lanka has no embassy in Quito to our knowledge, and Ecuador is handled by a mission based elsewhere in the region, the nearest embassy being in Brasília. Ecuadorians abroad may find a Sri Lankan embassy in their country of residence, but none is needed for a tourist ETA.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Ecuadorian citizens

The questions Ecuadorian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Ecuadorians need an ETA, the electronic authorisation that functions as Sri Lanka's short-stay entry permit and is widely called a visa. It is obtained online before departure and gives tourists 30 days with two entries. The standard government rate applies to Ecuadorian passports.

Yes. Where you live does not matter; the application is online and is assessed on the passport you hold. With an Ecuadorian passport you pay the standard rate. If you also have Spanish nationality and travel on that passport, the government charge is waived.

Usually through Madrid or Amsterdam and then Doha, Dubai or Istanbul. Another option runs via Bogotá or Panama City to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. Either way there are two connections and well over a day of travel.

The process is simple compared with a consular visa: an online form, a passport image and a card payment. Approval is not automatic or guaranteed, and accuracy matters, but most applications are decided within a day or two.

You have six months from the issue date to travel. After you arrive, the stay itself is 30 days, and both permitted entries have to take place inside that 30-day period.

Yes, measured from the day you arrive. Airlines enforce this at check-in, so a passport that falls short will stop the trip before it starts even when an ETA has been approved.

Taking employment in Sri Lanka, paid or unpaid, and self-employment are not allowed on a tourist ETA. Nor is living there through back-to-back visits. The authorisation is for genuine short stays as a visitor.

Possibly. An officer can request your onward or return ticket and evidence that you can pay for your stay. Have a hotel booking to hand as well, and remember that admission is the officer's decision.
