Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Uruguayan citizens

Uruguay is a small country with a habit of long journeys. Young Uruguayans take working-holiday years in Australia and New Zealand, professionals spend months crossing Asia, and retirees join extended tours. Sri Lanka turns up on many of those routes, a compact island where beaches, wildlife and old cities sit a few hours apart.

Before any of it, there is an authorisation to obtain. Sri Lanka requires an ETA — an Electronic Travel Authorisation — from all foreign nationals, and Uruguayans are no exception. People often refer to it as the Sri Lanka visa or e-visa. It is requested online and should be approved before you set off.

A Uruguayan passport rarely needs advance permission, so this is easy to overlook until an airline agent asks for it. What follows explains the requirement from Montevideo's point of view: the fee position, the stay rules, the handful of ways to route the flights, and the seasons worth aiming for.

Eligibility

Do Uruguayan citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Uruguayan citizens do need the ETA. Sri Lanka's waiver of the government charge, introduced on 25 May 2026 for forty nationalities, does not extend to Uruguay. That leaves Uruguayan tourist applications on the standard government rate; current figures appear in the live prices shown on this page.

Italian and Spanish ancestry is widespread in Uruguay, and a good many citizens have claimed a second passport through it. Italy and Spain both feature on the waiver list. If that is your situation, the European passport removes the government charge — but then it must be the one you present on every leg to Colombo.

Most Uruguayan visitors are tourists in the plain sense, and the tourist ETA also covers staying with friends, an Ayurveda course of treatment, yoga, sport and cultural performance. Those travelling to negotiate a contract, speak at a symposium or attend a workshop should take the business option. Neither allows a job.

Parents will want to know that the government fee is not applied to children under 12 for a tourist ETA of up to 30 days. The exemption is from the charge alone. A child without an ETA entry, or without a passport of their own, will not be boarded.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Uruguayan citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

The allowance for a Uruguayan tourist is 30 days and two entries. Everything is measured from the first landing. If you spend fifteen days on the island, five in the Maldives and return, ten days are available on the second entry and no more.

After approval you have six months in which to begin the trip. Uruguayans leaving on a year abroad sometimes apply too soon and find the window has closed by the time they reach South Asia. Time the application to the Sri Lankan leg, not to your departure from Montevideo, and read the conditions on the approval.

Six months of passport validity must remain on arrival. Check a passport issued several years ago before you rely on it, and remember that the cédula, however useful in the region, plays no part. Anyone wishing to stay on past the stamped date has to seek an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Uruguayan citizens

Everything Uruguayan passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Uruguayan passport holders

  • A Uruguayan pasaporte with a minimum of six months to run when you arrive; the cédula de identidad accepted by Mercosur neighbours is not valid for Sri Lanka
  • Both surnames if both are printed, in the order shown — Uruguayan law now lets parents choose the order, so do not assume the father's comes first
  • Italian or Basque surnames with double consonants or unusual vowels, such as Etcheverry or Cappelletti, checked with particular care
  • The passport number from the photo page, which differs from the cédula number even though both may be printed there
  • A clean scan or photograph of the full photo page
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international online payments, unlocked for foreign use with your bank if necessary
  • An email address that works wherever you will be in the weeks before arrival
  • The planned arrival date and a first address — a Negombo or Colombo hotel is fine
  • A flight out of Sri Lanka and accessible funds, both of which immigration may want to see

Simple process

How Uruguayan citizens apply for a Sri Lanka ETA

Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.

Step 1

Choose your ETA and travellers

Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.

Up to ten travellers
Step 2

Enter passport and trip details

Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.

Around 10 minutes
Step 3

Review, pay and submit

Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.

Fix errors before payment
Step 4

Receive your ETA by email

The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.

Processing times and when to apply

Decisions on Uruguayan applications mostly come within a day or two. Our advice is to leave a minimum of three to five days, and to be more generous around January and Semana de Turismo, when almost everyone with holiday to take is taking it.

Uruguay stays on the same time all year, eight and a half hours behind Sri Lanka. A late-evening application from Montevideo reaches Colombo at the start of business. Submitting then, and checking email the following morning, is the most efficient rhythm.

Because Uruguayans so often travel on long, open-ended itineraries, the bigger risk is not a slow approval but a stale one. Keep a note of the issue date. If six months will have passed, or your passport has been replaced along the way, plan for a new application.

On arrival

What Uruguayan citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Uruguay

Nothing flies nonstop from Uruguay to Sri Lanka, and Montevideo has few long-haul departures of its own. Uruguayans generally take the Madrid flight and connect through the Gulf, fly an hour north to São Paulo for Emirates or Qatar Airways, or cross the Río de la Plata to use Buenos Aires Ezeiza.

  • Montevideo Carrasco (MVD) — Madrid with Iberia or Air Europa, then Qatar Airways via Doha or Emirates via Dubai
  • Montevideo (MVD) — São Paulo with LATAM or GOL, then Emirates, Qatar Airways or Turkish Airlines onward
  • Montevideo — Buenos Aires by ferry or short flight, then a Gulf or Turkish service from Ezeiza
  • Montevideo (MVD) — Panama City with Copa Airlines, then Turkish Airlines via Istanbul
Roughly 28 to 32 hours from Montevideo to Colombo

Best time to go

When to travel from Uruguay

January is when Uruguay goes to the beach, and Sri Lanka's south coast is in season at the same moment. Swapping Punta del Este for Unawatuna or Tangalle means warmer water, far fewer high-rises and the chance of seeing blue whales from a morning boat out of Mirissa.

Semana de Turismo, in March or April, is a strong second choice. The south-west is still mostly dry and the hill country is green. Go in the first half of April if your dates allow, before the Sinhala and Tamil New Year closes shops and fills trains.

The winter holidays in early July fit the east coast, where the weather is settled from May to September. It is also a sound time for the Cultural Triangle. Travellers escaping a damp Montevideo winter usually find the dry heat around Sigiriya and Dambulla easier than they feared.

Uruguayans who measure a trip by its asado may be surprised by how vegetarian Sri Lankan cooking is, and by the monthly Poya holiday, when meat and alcohol are harder to find. Mate drinkers can at least look forward to the tea estates around Nuwara Eliya and Ella.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Uruguayan citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Uruguay — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Applying a year before reaching Sri Lanka

The six-month travel window starts at issue. Uruguayans who clear all their paperwork before a long trip can arrive to find the ETA has lapsed. Put a reminder in your calendar and apply a few weeks ahead of the Sri Lankan leg.

Reversing the surname order

Since Uruguayan families may now register either parent's surname first, relatives filling in the form sometimes guess. Guessing is how mismatches happen. Follow the passport, where the primary surname line is unambiguous.

Entering on the Italian passport without applying on it

A dual national who applied with Uruguayan details but hands over an Italian passport at Colombo has, in effect, no ETA. Pick one document for this trip. Your choice also decides whether the government charge is waived.

Leaving too little time at a self-made connection

Combining a ferry to Buenos Aires or a separate ticket to São Paulo with a long-haul departure is common from Uruguay. If the first leg runs late, nobody rebooks you. Allow a wide buffer, ideally an overnight.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Uruguayan citizens

We know of no Sri Lankan embassy in Montevideo; Uruguay comes under a regional mission, with Brasília the nearest embassy. For a tourist ETA this makes no practical difference, because nothing is submitted in person.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Uruguayan citizens

The questions Uruguayan passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes. Uruguayan citizens require an Electronic Travel Authorisation, the online entry permit usually called a Sri Lanka visa, approved before travel. As a tourist ETA it gives 30 days and two entries. Uruguay is not on the waiver list, so the standard government rate applies.

No. The cédula is accepted only by certain South American countries. Sri Lanka needs a passport that is valid for six months after arrival, and your ETA will be tied to its number.

It depends on fares and patience. Madrid then Doha or Dubai keeps you on two large carriers; São Paulo offers the shortest total distance with Emirates or Qatar Airways; Buenos Aires adds a transfer but more choice of dates.

On the Spanish passport the government charge for a tourist ETA is waived; on the Uruguayan one it is not. Whichever you choose must be used for both the application and the whole journey. Service fees are listed in the live prices on this page.

Up to about six months before arrival, since that is how long an approved ETA remains valid for travel. The minimum sensible lead time is three to five days, and approval times are not guaranteed.

Yes, one re-entry is allowed. It must happen within 30 days of your first arrival, and you are admitted for the remaining days only. A third entry would need a new ETA.

You cannot work, whether paid, unpaid or self-employed, or conduct business or trade. Journalism, political activity and NGO work need prior approval from the government and are not available through the online ETA.

A paid application cannot be corrected. You would need to submit a new one, and the government charge from the first is non-refundable. That is why checking surnames and the passport number on the review screen matters so much.
