Bahamian passport holders need an ETA in place before they fly to Sri Lanka. One online application gives 30 days and two entries, enough for leopards, tea estates and ancient cities that a flat coral archipelago cannot offer.

Overview
Nobody leaves the Bahamas in search of a better beach. Bahamians who travel to Sri Lanka go for what seven hundred low-lying islands do not have: mountains wrapped in tea, rock fortresses fifteen centuries old, wild elephants by the hundred and a cuisine built on spice instead of conch.
Before any of that, Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation. You will often see it described as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, and for a Bahamian tourist the terms amount to the same online permission, approved in advance and held electronically against the passport. No trip to a consulate in Florida or New York is involved.
Very few people in Nassau or Freeport have made this journey, so first-hand advice is scarce. What follows is written for Bahamian passport holders specifically: what the authorisation allows, how names with suffixes should be entered, which connections work from Lynden Pindling International, and how Sri Lanka's two monsoons fit around the Bahamian year.
At a glance
Eligibility
A Bahamian citizen cannot enter Sri Lanka as a visitor without an ETA. The Bahamas is not included in the list of countries enjoying the government fee waiver, so adult Bahamians pay the standard government rate in addition to our service fee. The exact amounts are displayed in the live prices shown on this page.
For most Bahamian visitors the tourist category is the right one. It covers a holiday, a honeymoon, a stay with friends, a wellness or Ayurveda retreat and attendance at sporting or cultural events.
Bahamians travelling for professional reasons should look more carefully. Financial-services staff attending a conference in Colombo, or resort managers invited to a hospitality workshop, need the business option, not the tourist one. Employment of any kind, paid or unpaid, is outside the tourist authorisation altogether, and so is reporting or filming for the media.
Parents should note that a Bahamian child of any age has to be covered by an application. The government fee is not charged for under-twelves on a tourist stay of up to 30 days. Since Bahamian children's passports are issued for a shorter term than adult ones, look at each child's expiry date before entering anything.
Stay & validity
Thirty days is what a Bahamian tourist receives, starting on the day of first arrival. With close to two days of travel at each end, a three-week visit is the natural shape of a trip from Nassau, and the allowance covers it with a week to spare.
The ETA is good for two entries, which opens up a twin-centre holiday. Bahamians who have come this far often add the Maldives, an hour or so by air from Colombo, and return to Sri Lanka for the flight home. That second landing draws on whatever remains of the original 30 days; no fresh month begins.
An approved authorisation remains usable for six months from the date of issue, so it can be arranged as soon as flights are confirmed. Bahamians who decide to linger past the date stamped in the passport must seek an extension in person from the Department of Immigration and Emigration at Battaramulla, on the edge of Colombo, while their existing permission is still current.

Requirements
Everything Bahamian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Most Bahamian applications are answered within a day or two of submission. No fixed turnaround can be promised, and Bahamians should allow at least three to five days before departure, with more in hand if the trip falls in Sri Lanka's December-to-March high season.
Residents of the Family Islands have an extra consideration. If you live on Abaco, Eleuthera, Exuma or Long Island, the journey begins with a domestic hop to Nassau, and internet or banking interruptions after a storm are not unknown. Apply while you have a stable connection and a working card, not from the departure lounge.
Timing against the Bahamian calendar helps too. Applications made in the days around Junkanoo, between Christmas and New Year, tend to be completed in a hurry and with mistakes. A Bahamian leaving in early January should have the approval in the inbox before Boxing Day.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
There is no direct air service between the Bahamas and Sri Lanka, and Bahamians choose between two broad routings. One crosses the Atlantic from Nassau to London and continues to Colombo with SriLankan Airlines. The other uses a short flight to Miami, New York or Toronto and then a Gulf airline through Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi.
Best time to go
Bahamians tend to travel abroad in the summer, when schools close from late June and the islands are hot, humid and at risk of storms. In Sri Lanka those months belong to the east coast. Trincomalee and Pasikudah have calm, clear water from May to September, and Bahamian divers will find the comparison with home waters interesting, not competitive.
July carries particular weight. Independence Day on 10 July gives many Bahamians a long weekend to extend, and a departure that week arrives in time for the build-up to the Kandy Esala Perahera. The Cultural Triangle of Sigiriya, Dambulla, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa is dry then as well.
The December-to-April season on Sri Lanka's west and south coasts coincides with the busiest months for Bahamian tourism, when anyone working in hotels, charter boats or the cruise port finds leave hard to get. Those who can travel then are rewarded with whale watching off Mirissa, cool evenings in Nuwara Eliya and the best conditions for Yala.
Clock differences are large and shift slightly. The Bahamas observes daylight saving while Sri Lanka stays on UTC+5:30, so Colombo is ten and a half hours ahead of Nassau in winter and nine and a half in summer.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Bahamas — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
Bahamian men are frequently known as Junior or the Third, and the habit of writing it after the surname is strong. If the machine-readable lines of the passport omit it, the application should omit it too, or the two records will not agree.
Bahamians are used to pre-clearing American immigration in Nassau and can forget that every later stop has its own requirements. Sri Lanka needs its ETA regardless of how smoothly the first connection goes.
A Bahamian banker or hotelier attending a seminar in Colombo is on business, even if a week of sightseeing follows. Selecting tourist because most of the stay is leisure puts the meeting days outside the conditions of the authorisation.
Bahamian adult and child passports do not run for the same number of years, and parents often check only their own. A child whose booklet has less than six months left on arrival will be stopped at check-in in Nassau.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Sri Lanka has no office in Nassau. Its Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York is accredited to the Bahamas as non-resident High Commissioner. Bahamian tourists have no reason to approach that mission for an ETA, because the application is made online and the result is emailed, with no interview and no passport submission.
FAQs
The questions Bahamian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Yes. Bahamian citizens must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation, commonly referred to as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, before they travel. For Bahamians the tourist ETA permits a 30-day stay with two entries. It allows you to travel, while admission itself is decided at the border.
Up to 30 days on a tourist ETA, counted from first arrival. If you leave for the Maldives and re-enter, the second stay uses the remainder of those 30 days. A longer visit needs an extension granted inside Sri Lanka before your time runs out.
Yes, adult Bahamians pay the standard government rate, as the Bahamas is not covered by the waiver. Children under twelve are exempt from that government fee for a tourist stay of up to 30 days. See the live prices shown on this page for the current totals.
The simplest routing is Nassau to London Heathrow and then SriLankan Airlines to Colombo, which keeps the trip to one change. Alternatives run through Miami or New York and a Gulf hub.
Only if it is printed in the machine-readable zone at the bottom of your Bahamian passport's photo page. If the suffix appears nowhere in those two lines, leave it out. The aim is an exact match with the document, not with how you sign your name.
Yes. The application is online, so it can be completed from Exuma, Abaco or anywhere else with an internet connection and a card that works for overseas payments. You do not need to travel to Nassau or abroad to apply.
Employment and self-employment in Sri Lanka are not permitted on a tourist ETA. The authorisation is for holidays, visits, medical or wellness stays and events. Anyone planning business meetings or training should select the business option instead.
The ETA does not transfer. It is tied to the number of the passport you applied with, so a renewed or replaced Bahamian passport needs a new application, and the government charge already paid is not refunded.
Your nationality is already set to Bahamas. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
