Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Vincentian citizens

Few journeys a Vincentian can make are longer than the one to Sri Lanka. From Kingstown the island lies almost exactly on the opposite side of the globe, and the number of people who travel between the two each year is small. Those who do are often seafarers joining or leaving a ship, Vincentians settled in Britain or Canada on a wider tour of Asia, or cricket supporters following the regional side.

Small numbers do not mean a complicated process. Sri Lanka handles short visits through an Electronic Travel Authorisation, the document many travellers call a Sri Lanka visa, and a Vincentian applies for it in the same online form as everyone else. Nothing has to be couriered to an embassy.

Where Vincentian travellers do need to take more care is in the planning around the ETA: a passport that must still have six months to run on arrival, connections through countries with transit rules of their own, and a time difference that turns a simple email exchange into an overnight wait.

Eligibility

Do Vincentian citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

A Vincentian needs an ETA for any short stay in Sri Lanka, whether that is a holiday, a visit to friends or a few days ashore between ship contracts. It has to be in place before departure. Nationals of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines have no exemption, and the authorisation is checked when you first check in at Argyle.

On cost, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines falls under the standard government rate. The waiver Sri Lanka introduced in May 2026 lists forty countries and no Eastern Caribbean state appears among them. You will find the amount payable, including our fee for preparing and submitting the application, in the live prices displayed on this page.

Unlike several of its neighbours, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines does not sell citizenship, so nearly every Vincentian passport belongs to someone born in the islands or descended from someone who was. Many of those families now have members in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States. A Vincentian who also carries one of those three passports and travels on it falls inside the waiver, but only if the application is made in that passport's number.

Purpose matters as much as nationality. Sightseeing, visiting relatives, an Ayurveda retreat or watching a match all sit within the tourist option. Attending a seminar or a religious symposium calls for the business option instead.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Vincentian citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

The tourist ETA gives a Vincentian 30 days in Sri Lanka, counted from the first arrival, with a second entry permitted inside that span. Leave for Chennai or Malé on day ten and return on day sixteen, and you have fourteen days left when you re-enter.

Approval remains usable for six months from the date of issue. That suits the way long trips from the Grenadines are organised, with fares booked early to catch the few weekly long-haul departures from Argyle. The wording on your approval notice takes precedence over any general summary, so read it when it arrives.

A month can feel short after two days of travel in each direction. Anyone hoping to remain longer must obtain an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla, just outside Colombo, while the original permission is still running.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Vincentian citizens

Everything Vincentian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Vincentian passport holders

  • A Saint Vincent and the Grenadines passport with at least six months of validity left on your arrival date in Colombo
  • Nationality selected as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, which some country lists file under S for Saint and others under St
  • Surnames with a separate particle, such as De Freitas, Da Silva or Dos Santos, typed with the same spacing the passport shows
  • A legible image of the photo page, flattened so the gutter of the booklet does not shadow the lower lines
  • A card your bank has cleared for foreign online purchases, as some Kingstown-issued debit cards are restricted to local use by default
  • An inbox you can reach from a phone on Bequia, Union Island or at sea, not a work address you lose access to on leave
  • An arrival date and a Sri Lankan address, which for crew can be the hotel booked by the ship's agent
  • A return or onward ticket and evidence of funds to show if an officer asks for them at the border
  • Details for every child in the party, including those under 12 who are exempt from the government charge

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Decisions on ETA applications generally come through in a day or two. A Vincentian applicant should not expect anything different, provided the passport details are entered cleanly the first time.

Three to five days before departure is the minimum we advise for any traveller, and we would stretch that to ten days for someone starting from Saint Vincent. Long-haul services from Argyle do not run daily, so a missed flight caused by a late approval can cost you most of a week. Approval times cannot be guaranteed by anyone.

Mind the clocks. Colombo runs nine and a half hours ahead of Kingstown in every month of the year, since neither country changes its clocks. An email sent from Sri Lanka at ten in the morning lands at half past midnight Vincentian time.

On arrival

What Vincentian citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

No airline links Saint Vincent with Sri Lanka directly, and reaching Colombo normally takes two changes of aircraft. Argyle International has a limited long-haul schedule, so the day of the week you leave often decides the route. London is the natural pivot because of the SriLankan Airlines nonstop from Heathrow, with Toronto, Miami and New York as alternatives that connect onward through the Gulf. Every one of those transit countries sets its own entry conditions, so confirm them when you book.

  • Argyle (SVD) to London Heathrow with Virgin Atlantic via Barbados, then SriLankan Airlines to Colombo
  • Argyle to Miami with American Airlines, then Qatar Airways via Doha or Emirates via Dubai
  • Argyle to Toronto with Air Canada, then a Gulf or European carrier onward to Colombo
  • A short regional hop to Barbados for a wider choice of transatlantic departures to London

Best time to go

When to travel from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Sri Lanka has two monsoons that affect opposite sides of the island, so there is always a dry coast somewhere. Between December and March the beaches south of Colombo and the tea estates of the central highlands have their best weather, and this is when most international visitors come.

Vincy Mas fills late June and early July, and few Vincentians would choose to be abroad for it. Leave afterwards and you arrive in Sri Lanka during the east coast's season, with flat seas at Pasikudah and surf at Arugam Bay until September. Kandy's Esala Perahera tends to fall in those post-carnival weeks as well.

December carries its own pull at home, with Nine Mornings in the run-up to Christmas. A trip in January or February avoids that clash and catches the whale-watching boats working out of Mirissa.

October and November are the least predictable months in Sri Lanka, with inter-monsoon showers almost anywhere on the island. They coincide with the tail of the hurricane season in the Windwards and with Independence Day on 27 October.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Vincentian citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Closing up a two-part surname

Vincentian family names of Madeiran origin are written as two words on the passport. Online forms and airline systems often squeeze De Freitas into Defreitas. Enter the ETA as the passport prints it and make sure the ticket follows the same convention.

Using a seaman's book in place of the passport

Many Vincentians work at sea and are used to travelling on a discharge book alongside the passport. Sri Lanka's ETA is issued against the passport alone. The number, issue date and expiry date all come from that booklet.

Picking the wrong Saint in the country list

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines sits beside Saint Kitts and Nevis and Saint Lucia in every dropdown. Selecting a neighbour by accident produces an authorisation in the wrong nationality, and that cannot be amended once payment has gone through.

Booking the transit ETA for a stay that is too long

Crew and travellers breaking a journey sometimes choose the transit option to avoid the government charge. It covers two days at most and needs proof of onward travel. If a ship is delayed or you want to see more than the airport road, the tourist ETA is the safer choice.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Vincentian citizens

Kingstown hosts no Sri Lankan diplomatic office, and contact between the two governments runs through missions elsewhere in the Americas. Vincentian ETA applicants have no reason to approach any of them, as the whole application is completed and decided online. For other consular matters, ask Sri Lanka's foreign ministry which office is responsible for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines at the time, as accreditations change.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Vincentian citizens

The questions Vincentian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes. Citizens of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines must hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation, commonly referred to as a Sri Lanka visa, before a short visit. The tourist version grants 30 days and two entries and is obtained online.

The government charge is not waived for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, so the standard rate applies. Only children under 12 escape that charge on a tourist ETA. The total payable is shown in the live prices on this page.

The transit ETA covers a passage through Sri Lanka of up to two days and requires documentary proof of onward travel. Whether it fits a crew change depends on your schedule and employer's arrangements, so check with the ship's agent before choosing it over the tourist option.

For most travellers it is through London, taking Virgin Atlantic from Argyle and then SriLankan Airlines from Heathrow. Routes through Miami or Toronto and a Gulf hub also work.

Aim for ten days before you fly, and never fewer than three to five. Approvals usually take a day or two.

With the space, exactly as it is printed on the photo page. Do not merge the two parts or add a hyphen. Then check your airline booking shows the surname the same way, so the three records agree at check-in.

Not if you apply and travel on the Canadian passport, because Canada is one of the forty countries covered by the waiver. Apply on the Vincentian one and the standard rate is charged. Our service fee applies in both cases.

An extension is possible on application to the Department of Immigration and Emigration at Battaramulla near Colombo. It must be requested before your current permission expires, and the decision rests with the department.
