Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Malian citizens

Mali has no coastline, and for most Malians the nearest sea is the Atlantic at Dakar or Abidjan, well over a thousand kilometres from Bamako. Sri Lanka is a different kind of journey altogether: an Indian Ocean island of surf beaches, tea estates and ancient Buddhist cities, reached after a long day and night in the air.

The entry rule is simple to state. A Malian passport holder needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation, or ETA, approved before leaving for Colombo. Many people search for it as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, and for a short tourist trip it is the document they mean.

This page is written for travellers starting in Bamako, Kayes, Sikasso or Mopti, and for Malians living in France, Côte d'Ivoire or elsewhere who still travel on the Malian passport. It covers what the tourist ETA allows, how the charge applies to Mali, and the realistic routings from Modibo Keita International Airport.

Eligibility

Do Malian citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Yes. Sri Lanka asks every foreign national for an ETA before a short visit, and Mali is no exception. The West African habit of crossing a land border with an identity card has no bearing on an island in the Indian Ocean.

Mali is not among the forty countries whose citizens have had the government charge on a tourist ETA waived since 25 May 2026, and it is outside the reciprocal and SAARC arrangements as well. Malian applicants therefore pay the standard government rate. The current total, including our service fee for handling the application, appears in the live prices shown on this page.

Families from Mali should know that children under twelve are not charged the government fee for a tourist ETA of up to thirty days. Each child must still be entered in the application with his or her own passport details, since a Malian child travels on an individual booklet and not on a parent's document.

The tourist ETA covers holidays, visits to friends and relatives, Ayurveda or other medical treatment, and sporting or cultural events. A Malian trader meeting suppliers in Colombo, or a delegate at a conference or seminar, should select the business option instead.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Malian citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

A tourist ETA issued to a Malian citizen allows a stay of 30 days and two entries. The count starts on the day you first land, and both entries must fall inside those 30 days. Fly from Colombo to Malé for a week and come back, and you receive only what is left of the original period, not a new month.

Once approved, the authorisation can be used for travel during the six months after its issue date, and the conditions printed on the approval itself are the ones that count.

Sri Lanka requires the passport to be valid for at least six months from the date of arrival. Ordinary Malian biometric passports run for five years, so a booklet in its final year can easily fall short. A renewed passport carries a new number, which means the ETA should be requested only once the new booklet from Bamako is in your hands.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Malian citizens

Everything Malian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Malian passport holders

  • A Malian biometric passport valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Sri Lanka — check the expiry now, given the five-year term
  • Surname (nom) and given names (prénoms) typed exactly as in the passport but without accents: Traoré becomes TRAORE, Keïta becomes KEITA, Dembélé becomes DEMBELE
  • The passport number copied character by character from the photo page of the Malian passport, never from an old booklet or a national identity card
  • A sharp colour scan or phone photograph of the bio-data page taken without glare
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international online payments — ask your bank in Mali to activate this beforehand, or have a relative abroad pay for you
  • An email address you can open on mobile data, since the approval for a Malian applicant arrives there and not by SMS or WhatsApp
  • The address of your first hotel or host in Sri Lanka and the date you expect to land at Colombo
  • A return or onward ticket and evidence of funds, such as recent bank statements, ready for the check-in desk in Bamako and for immigration officers on arrival

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Most ETA applications from Malian citizens are approved within a day or two, and many sooner. No timescale can be promised, because any Malian file may be set aside for a manual check.

We advise Malians to apply at least three to five days before departure, and earlier still for travel between December and March, when Sri Lanka's west and south coasts are busiest. The journey from Bamako involves at least one connection and the first airline will want to see the approval, so settle the ETA before you leave for the airport, not during a layover.

Bear the calendar in mind. Banks in Mali close for Tabaski, Korité, Mawlid and 22 September, so if your card needs international payments switched on, do it well ahead of a public holiday. Sri Lanka is five and a half hours ahead of Bamako, which means a form sent in the Malian evening arrives in the middle of the Colombo night.

On arrival

What Malian citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Mali

No nonstop flight links Mali and Sri Lanka, and every itinerary from Bamako involves a change of aircraft. The most direct choice is usually Turkish Airlines through Istanbul, with a single connection. Alternatives through Casablanca or Addis Ababa need two changes. Schedules out of Bamako shift often, so confirm current services before paying.

  • Bamako (BKO) — Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, then Istanbul — Colombo (CMB) on the same carrier
  • Bamako — Casablanca with Royal Air Maroc, then Doha and a Qatar Airways flight to Colombo
  • Bamako — Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Airlines, then Dubai and Emirates or flydubai to Colombo
  • Bamako — Dakar or Abidjan on a regional carrier, then Emirates through Dubai to Colombo
Roughly 20 to 26 hours from Bamako, including connections

Best time to go

When to travel from Mali

Mali's own year divides into a cool dry season from November to February, a fierce hot season from March to May, and rains from June to September. Sri Lanka runs on two monsoons instead, so the right coast depends on the month.

December to March suits the west and south coasts and the hill country: Galle Fort, the beaches around Mirissa with whale watching offshore, and the tea slopes near Nuwara Eliya and Ella. For a Malian traveller this coincides with the harmattan, so you exchange dust and dry air for humidity and sea breezes, and the hills can feel surprisingly cold at night.

The long school holiday in Mali falls roughly from July to September, during the rains at home. Those months bring the south-west monsoon to Colombo and the southern beaches, so Malian families should look east instead, to Trincomalee, Pasikudah and the surf at Arugam Bay.

Anyone raised on the three rounds of green tea poured in a Bamako grin will enjoy seeing where black tea is grown and tasted on the estates around Nuwara Eliya. Muslim travellers from Mali will find mosques and halal food in Colombo, Kandy and along the east coast.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Malian citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Mali — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Typing the accents from the French spelling

Malian passports print names such as Koné, Sidibé or Cissé with accents in the visual zone, but the machine-readable lines at the foot of the page drop them. Enter KONE, SIDIBE and CISSE.

Applying shortly before renewing the passport

With a five-year booklet, many Malians travel in its last months. If you renew after the ETA is issued, the authorisation stays attached to the old number, cannot be moved, and the government charge is not refunded. Renew in Bamako first, then apply.

Mixing a French and a Malian passport

Many Malians in the diaspora also hold French nationality. France is on Sri Lanka's waiver list and Mali is not, so the charge differs by passport, but you must travel on the exact document named in the ETA. Decide which one you will carry before filling in the form.

Leaving payment to the last evening

Cards issued in Mali are often blocked for foreign online transactions by default, and a declined payment the night before a flight from Bamako leaves no time to reach the bank. Test the card early or arrange a payer in advance.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Malian citizens

Sri Lanka has no embassy in Bamako; Mali is covered from the Sri Lankan High Commission in Nairobi. That distance is irrelevant for an ETA, which is requested and issued online without an interview or any posting of your passport.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Malian citizens

The questions Malian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes, in the form of an ETA. Malian citizens must hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling to Sri Lanka for a short visit, and this is what most people mean when they search for a Sri Lanka visa. It is obtained online before departure from Bamako.

A tourist ETA gives Malian passport holders 30 days from the date of first arrival, with two entries allowed inside that period. A second entry does not restart the count. Staying longer means applying for an extension at the immigration department in Battaramulla.

No. Mali is not one of the forty countries covered by the waiver that began on 25 May 2026, so the standard government rate applies to Malian adults. Children under twelve are not charged the government fee on a tourist ETA. The live prices shown on this page give current totals.

No. Mali falls under the Sri Lanka High Commission in Nairobi. For a tourist or business ETA you have no reason to contact it, because the whole request is handled online.

Entries are made in English, using Latin letters as they appear in the machine-readable zone of your Malian passport. If you are more comfortable in French or Bambara, ask an English-speaking friend to read the review screen with you before payment.

Apply with the passport you will actually carry to Colombo. A Franco-Malian dual national travelling on the French passport falls under the waiver of the government charge, while the Malian passport is charged the standard rate.

Usually Turkish Airlines through Istanbul, which needs only one connection. Routings through Casablanca and Doha, or Addis Ababa and Dubai, also work but add a second change.

Yes. The tourist ETA is double entry, so a side trip from Colombo to Malé and back is possible for Malian passport holders. Both arrivals must happen within the 30 days counted from the first one, and the second stay is limited to the days remaining.
