Overview
Liberians tend to look west across the Atlantic when they think of travel, to family in Minnesota, Pennsylvania or Maryland. Sri Lanka lies in the other direction and attracts a smaller, more deliberate kind of traveller: seafarers and maritime staff on leave, surfers who learned at Robertsport, couples after a honeymoon nobody else has had, and Liberians already living in Asia or the Gulf.
For all of them the first step is an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Sri Lanka does not admit Liberian citizens for a short visit without one, and it must be approved before travel. You will see it described online as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, which is accurate enough for a holiday.
The form is in English and asks for nothing exotic, yet Liberian applicants make a distinctive set of slips: dates typed in the American month-first order, suffixes such as Jr. added or dropped, and confusion over which of two passports to use. This page works through each, along with routes from Roberts International Airport.

Eligibility
Yes. The ETA is compulsory for all foreign nationals on short visits, and Liberia has no exemption or special arrangement with Sri Lanka. Have the approval before you travel out to Harbel for your flight.
Liberian passports are charged the standard government rate. The waiver that Sri Lanka introduced on 25 May 2026 covers forty countries, including the United States, but not Liberia. Our service fee for preparing the application is separate, and both are displayed in the live prices shown on this page.
The government fee is not charged for children under twelve on a tourist ETA of up to thirty days, whatever their nationality. Liberian parents must nevertheless enter each child as a traveller, with the child's own passport number.
Tourism, visiting friends or relatives, medical care including Ayurveda, and taking part in sports or cultural events are covered by the tourist ETA. Liberians travelling for shipping or commodity meetings, church conferences and conventions, or short training should use the business option. No form of employment is allowed on a tourist ETA, and journalists need prior clearance from the Sri Lankan government.
Stay & validity
The tourist ETA allows a Liberian citizen to remain for 30 days and to enter Sri Lanka twice. Think of it as one 30-day period with a break permitted in the middle: the days keep running while you are away, and you come back to whatever is left.
From the date of issue, the approval can be used for six months. A Liberian traveller who applies in September for a December trip is well within that. The conditions shown on your own approval notice are the authority on dates.
Your Liberian passport needs six months of validity remaining when you land at Colombo. If yours is close to expiry, renew it in Monrovia or at a Liberian embassy abroad before you apply. A new passport has a new number, and the ETA, which is attached to the old one, would no longer be usable.
To stay longer than 30 days a Liberian visitor must obtain an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla, on the edge of Colombo. Repeated short visits intended to add up to residence are not what the tourist ETA is for.

Requirements
Everything Liberian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Liberian applicants normally hear back within one or two days. Nobody can guarantee that, and a small share of applications are held for a manual look, generally over a date or a name that does not match the passport image.
Get the application in three to five days or more before your flight from Liberia. In the weeks around Christmas and New Year, when Sri Lanka's south coast is at its busiest and Liberian offices slow down, a fortnight is not excessive.
Monrovia observes Greenwich Mean Time year-round, so Colombo is five and a half hours ahead. Roberts International is about an hour's drive from the capital, in Margibi County, and there is little to be done there if a document is missing. Finish and print everything in town.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
Liberia has no nonstop link to Sri Lanka and a limited choice of airlines. Most Liberian travellers either take Royal Air Maroc to Casablanca and connect through the Gulf, or hop along the coast to Accra or Abidjan and join an Emirates flight to Dubai. Brussels Airlines to Europe is a third possibility. All of these involve two changes, and timetables from Roberts International should be checked close to booking.
Best time to go
Monrovia is drenched from May to October and dry from November to April. The dry months at home are also the best months on Sri Lanka's south and west coasts, so a Liberian planning a Christmas or New Year escape can rely on good weather in Galle, Mirissa and Bentota.
Liberia's school vacation, and the Independence Day holiday on 26 July, fall in the rains. That is low season in south-west Sri Lanka but the height of the season in the east, where Arugam Bay draws surfers from May to September. Liberians who ride the left-hand breaks at Robertsport will want it on their list.
Inland Sri Lanka has two things with echoes of home. Rubber is grown in the wet lowlands, as it is around Harbel, and tea covers the cooler hills near Nuwara Eliya and Ella. The Cultural Triangle, with Sigiriya, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, and the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy show a Buddhist heritage Liberians will not have met in West Africa.
October and November bring showers across the whole island and lower prices. Liberian visitors used to lively weekends should know that every month has a Poya full-moon holiday on which alcohol is not sold, and that mid-April's Sinhala and Tamil New Year shuts many businesses.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Liberia — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
Liberia follows the United States in putting the month first. On an international form 04/07 can be read as 4 July or 7 April. Compare every date with the passport, which spells the month in letters, before you pay.
A Liberian known all his life as James Cooper Jr. may find the passport says only James Kollie Cooper. The suffix belongs in the ETA only if the passport prints it.
Liberian-Americans often hold both passports. The United States is on the waiver list and Liberia is not, which tempts people to apply on one and travel on whichever is at hand. The ETA works solely with the passport number entered.
A Liberian passport with four or five months left is acceptable for many journeys but not for Sri Lanka. Airline staff apply the rule at check-in and will not board you.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Sri Lanka has no embassy in Monrovia and covers Liberia from its High Commission in Nairobi. That office plays no role in a Liberian traveller's ETA, which is applied for and received online. It is the point of contact for anything requiring a consular decision.
FAQs
The questions Liberian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Yes. Liberian citizens need an ETA, the Electronic Travel Authorisation that serves as Sri Lanka's short-stay visa, and it must be approved before they travel.
Thirty days from first arrival on the tourist ETA, with double entry. Both entries have to fall within the thirty days, and any extension is a matter for the immigration department in Battaramulla.
Yes, whichever passport you use. On a United States passport the government charge for a tourist ETA is waived; on a Liberian passport the standard rate applies. Apply with the passport you will hand to the immigration officer in Colombo.
No. Liberia is not among the forty waiver countries. Only children under twelve escape the government fee on a Liberian tourist application. For amounts, see the live prices shown on this page.
Expect two connections. From Liberia the practical routes run via Casablanca and Doha, via Accra or Abidjan and Dubai, or via Brussels and a Gulf hub.
No. Liberia is served by the Sri Lanka High Commission in Nairobi, but an ETA application never involves that mission.
No. Joining a vessel is employment, which the tourist ETA does not permit, and the arrangements for crew are made through the shipping agent. A Liberian seafarer taking a holiday in Sri Lanka between contracts can use the tourist ETA like any other visitor.
At least three to five days before departure, and earlier in December and January. Most Liberian applications are approved in a day or two, but that cannot be guaranteed.
Your nationality is already set to Liberia. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
