Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Kuwaiti citizens

When the temperature in Kuwait City approaches fifty degrees, the country empties. Kuwaitis are among the world's most committed summer travellers, and Sri Lanka has earned a place on the list alongside the older favourites, helped by nonstop flights, family-sized villas and a hill country where July afternoons call for a cardigan.

To enter, a Kuwaiti citizen needs an ETA — an Electronic Travel Authorisation issued online in advance. People commonly call it the Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, and travel agents in Kuwait use the terms interchangeably. It is a digital record matched to your passport number; there is no sticker and no embassy stage.

Kuwaiti nationals benefit from the waiver Sri Lanka introduced on 25 May 2026, under which the government charge for a tourist ETA is not collected from 40 nationalities. The requirement to hold the ETA is unchanged, and a service fee applies to applications made through us, as the live prices shown on this page make clear. Non-Kuwaiti residents of Kuwait should apply on the passport they hold; the civil ID plays no part.

Eligibility

Do Kuwaiti citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Kuwaitis need one for every short visit, with no exception for age, length of stay or the fact that the charge is waived. Kuwait Airways, Jazeera Airways and SriLankan Airlines all confirm the authorisation before issuing a boarding pass in Kuwait.

The tourist ETA is intended for exactly the kind of trip most Kuwaitis take: a family holiday, a visit to friends, a course of Ayurvedic treatment, or travel to watch or take part in a sporting or cultural event. It allows a stay of 30 days.

It is not a work or trade document. Kuwaiti merchants sourcing tea, gems or garments, and anyone attending meetings, negotiations, seminars or a conference, should select the business option. Training programmes of under one month fall into that category too.

Kuwaiti households tend to travel in numbers, sometimes across three generations and with staff. All of them must be listed. Children below 12 are not charged a government fee for a tourist ETA under a rule that applies to every nationality, and employees on Indian, Filipino, Nepali or Ethiopian passports are handled according to their own country's position.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Kuwaiti citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

A Kuwaiti visitor is granted 30 days from the first entry stamp. That matters for the long Kuwaiti summer trip, because a month is the ceiling for a tourist ETA without further permission. Families planning six weeks should either shorten the Sri Lankan leg or be prepared to apply locally for an extension.

Two entries are included, both within the 30 days. A common pattern is to break the stay with a few nights in the Maldives; on return, the officer grants the unused remainder. The ETA does not create a second 30-day period.

Issued approvals stay valid for travel for six months, and the terms printed on yours are definitive. Sri Lanka requires the passport to have six months left on arrival. If a passport is renewed or replaced after approval, the authorisation stays with the old number and the traveller concerned must apply again.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Kuwaiti applications are typically approved in one to two days. We advise submitting no later than three to five days before the flight. With a multi-generation party it is worth adding time simply to gather a readable passport image from every relative.

The summer exodus begins as soon as school examinations finish in June, and it is the busiest period by far. The National Day and Liberation Day holidays on 25 and 26 February produce a second, shorter rush, often stretched into a longer break. Both Eids generate a third and fourth. Apply ahead of each.

February deserves a particular mention because it falls in Sri Lanka's peak season, when hotels on the south coast and in the tea country are close to full. An ETA arranged in January removes one variable from a trip where rooms and flights are already tight.

On arrival

What Kuwaiti citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Kuwait

Kuwait has more direct capacity to Colombo than its size would suggest, a legacy of the many Sri Lankans employed in the country. That gives Kuwaiti holidaymakers a choice of a full-service national carrier, a low-cost alternative and Sri Lanka's flag carrier, all nonstop from Kuwait International.

Best time to go

When to travel from Kuwait

Start with the season you are escaping. In July and August, when Kuwait is at its most extreme, the comfortable parts of Sri Lanka are the east coast and the hills. Trincomalee and Pasikudah have dry weather and gentle sea; Nuwara Eliya sits high enough to be properly cool.

Colombo and the south-west are in their monsoon then. That means heavy showers and rough sea on the beaches near Bentota and Galle, though plenty of Kuwaiti visitors book there anyway for the rain itself and for lower-season availability of large villas.

The February holidays bring the reverse. South and west coasts are sunny and settled, whales are passing Mirissa, and the Cultural Triangle is dry underfoot. It is the best month to see the island in a short visit, and the one where booking early matters most.

Kuwait is two and a half hours behind Sri Lanka in every season. Many departures from the Gulf reach Colombo early in the morning, so consider arranging an early check-in for children and grandparents. Mosques and halal kitchens are widely available, particularly in Colombo, Kandy and the eastern towns.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Kuwaiti citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Kuwait — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Planning a six-week summer on a 30-day document

Kuwaiti summer holidays routinely run longer than a month. The tourist ETA does not. Overstaying is a breach of its conditions, so a longer stay needs an extension obtained in Sri Lanka from the Department of Immigration and Emigration before day thirty, or an itinerary that moves on in time.

Mismatched spellings across one family

Brothers and sisters often have the same family name rendered differently in their passports, issued years apart. Do not standardise them. Each traveller's entry must follow that person's own passport, even if it looks inconsistent on the family's application.

Relying on the civil ID number

Kuwaitis quote their civil ID number for almost everything at home, and it sometimes ends up in the passport-number field. The ETA is tied to the passport number alone. An application carrying the wrong identifier has to be made again.

Forgetting the newest member of the family

Infants are easy to overlook when ten adults are being entered. A baby needs a passport and must be covered by an application like everyone else, although no government fee is charged for a child under 12. Count the passports against the names before paying.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Kuwaiti citizens

Sri Lanka's embassy in Kuwait exists mainly to support Sri Lankan workers and to process cases that cannot be handled electronically. Kuwaiti tourists do not attend it for an ETA; the whole application, from form to approval email, takes place online.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Kuwaiti citizens

The questions Kuwaiti passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes. Kuwaiti citizens must have an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before they travel, which is what most people mean by a Sri Lanka visa. The government charge on the tourist ETA is waived for Kuwaiti nationals, yet the ETA itself is still mandatory and checked at the airport in Kuwait.

A passport with six months of validity from arrival, an image of its photo page, an email address, a payment card for international online use, your arrival date and a first address in Sri Lanka. Carry your return ticket and be ready to show you can fund the stay.

Not on a tourist ETA alone, which allows 30 days. A longer stay depends on an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla, applied for before the 30 days end. Leaving and immediately returning does not produce a new month on the same ETA.

Kuwait is on the waiver list, so the government charge is not applied to Kuwaiti tourists of any age, and under-12s of every nationality are exempt from it anyway. The service fee for our assistance appears in the live prices shown on this page.

The waiver depends on citizenship. Apply using the passport you hold: if that country is one of the 40 on Sri Lanka's list, the government charge is waived, and if not, the standard or SAARC rate applies. Your Kuwaiti residency is not taken into account.

Kuwait Airways, Jazeera Airways and SriLankan Airlines operate the route nonstop, with a journey of a little over five hours. Timetables vary through the year, so check current schedules when you book.

They can be included in the same group application, but under their own passport and nationality. Their fee status follows their citizenship, not the employer's. Make sure their passport also has six months of validity.

Before payment it can be corrected on the review screen. After payment it cannot, and government charges, where they apply, are not refunded or transferred. A new application is needed, so check names and passport numbers for all family members first.
