Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Omani citizens

Omanis and Sri Lankans share an ocean and a season. The south-west monsoon that turns Dhofar green during the khareef belongs to the same weather system that waters Sri Lanka's tea hills, and dhows from Sur and Muscat were calling at the island's ports centuries before aircraft made the crossing in under four hours.

Today the formal requirement is modest: an Electronic Travel Authorisation, abbreviated to ETA and frequently described as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa. Omani citizens apply online before they travel, and the approval is stored against the passport number for the airline and the border officer to see.

Oman is included in Sri Lanka's waiver of the government charge on tourist ETAs, in force for 40 nationalities since 25 May 2026. That does not make the ETA optional, and a service fee applies when we handle the application; the live prices shown on this page give the detail. Expatriates living in the Sultanate should note that they apply on the passport they hold, not on the strength of an Omani resident card.

Eligibility

Do Omani citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

An Omani passport holder needs an ETA whatever the length or purpose of a short visit. Oman Air will ask to see evidence of it at Muscat, and the same is true if you connect through another Gulf airport.

For holidays the tourist ETA applies, giving 30 days. Its scope is wide enough for the usual Omani itinerary of hills, wildlife and coast, and extends to family visits, Ayurvedic or other medical treatment, yoga, and attendance at sports fixtures and cultural shows.

Different rules cover work-related travel. An Omani attending a seminar, trade negotiation, workshop or conference, or undertaking training of less than a month, needs the business option. Participation in a religious symposium is classed the same way.

Students and young Omanis travelling independently, a growing group, sometimes ask whether volunteering is allowed. Unpaid work counts as employment under the tourist ETA's conditions and is not permitted. Travel, learn to surf, take a cooking class; do not take a position, even an informal one, in a hostel or project.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Omani citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

Thirty days from first arrival is what an Omani tourist receives. Because Muscat is so close, some travellers consider two short trips, and the double-entry feature allows this only if both arrivals fall inside the same 30-day span; the second visit gets the remainder.

A later, separate trip calls for a new ETA. The tourist authorisation is not meant to support a pattern of frequent or successive visits that amounts to residence, and an officer may question a traveller whose passport shows exactly that.

Approval can be sought up to six months before travel, since that is how long an issued ETA remains valid for entry, subject to the conditions printed on it. Your passport must have six months left when you land. Renewing it through the Royal Oman Police after approval breaks the link, and the ETA has to be requested again.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Omani citizens

Everything Omani passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Omani passport holders

  • An Omani passport valid for a minimum of six months from the day of arrival in Colombo
  • A passport, not the Omani ID card, even though the card is sufficient for journeys to other GCC states
  • Your full name in the passport's Latin spelling, including the tribal name
  • Attention to endings and vowels: Al Balushi and Al Baloshi, Al Harthy and Al Harthi are different entries
  • The passport number as printed on the photo page
  • A photograph or scan of that page with nothing cropped and no reflection
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international online payments, with online purchases switched on in your banking app
  • An email address that you, the traveller, can open on the road
  • Your arrival date, first address in Sri Lanka and a return or onward ticket

Simple process

How Omani citizens apply for a Sri Lanka ETA

Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.

Step 1

Choose your ETA and travellers

Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.

Up to ten travellers
Step 2

Around 10 minutes
Step 3

Review, pay and submit

Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.

Fix errors before payment
Step 4

Receive your ETA by email

The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Applications lodged by Omani citizens are, as a rule, decided in a day or two. Allow more: three to five days before departure is the sensible minimum, and nothing is guaranteed about speed.

The busiest booking periods in Oman are the Eid holidays, the National Day holiday in November and the school summer break from June to August. November sits in Sri Lanka's inter-monsoon period and December opens the south-coast high season, so late-year travel benefits from early paperwork.

The short flight tempts people into last-minute decisions. A Thursday-night departure for a long weekend is realistic from Muscat in a way it is not from most places, but only if the authorisation was arranged earlier in the week. Treat the ETA as the first booking, not the last.

On arrival

What Omani citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Oman

Oman has the shortest crossing to Sri Lanka of any Gulf state, straight across the Arabian Sea from Muscat. Travellers from Salalah, Sohar and the interior connect through Muscat, and those in the north sometimes find it as easy to depart from Dubai or Sharjah.

  • Muscat (MCT) — Colombo with Oman Air
  • Salalah (SLL) — Colombo with a domestic connection in Muscat
  • Muscat (MCT) — Colombo via Dubai or Doha when the nonstop is full
  • Northern Oman — Colombo from Dubai (DXB) or Sharjah (SHJ), a drive across the border

Best time to go

When to travel from Oman

Omanis understand monsoon travel better than most visitors. Just as Salalah is at its best when the rain comes, Sri Lanka's hill country in June, July and August is lush, misty and cool. The difference is scale: the island's wet zone is far larger than Dhofar's, with rivers, forest reserves and tea estates.

If you want reliable sunshine in those same months, go to the east. Trincomalee, Nilaveli and Pasikudah stay largely dry during the south-west monsoon, and Arugam Bay has its surfing season from May to September.

From December to April the pattern flips and the south and west coasts take over. This period suits an Omani winter break: comfortable at home, dry in Galle and Mirissa, and ideal for combining beaches with the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.

Clocks in Sri Lanka are one and a half hours ahead of Muscat. The Muslim community on the island has deep roots in Indian Ocean trade, and visitors will find mosques, halal food and familiar hospitality in most towns. Vesak, at the May full moon, fills streets with lanterns and is worth planning around.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Omani citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Oman — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Booking tonight's flight and applying afterwards

At under four hours, Colombo feels like a domestic hop from Muscat. The ETA does not move at that speed. Approvals mostly take a day or two, and an application submitted at the airport is unlikely to be ready by the time the gate closes.

Entering the tribal name inconsistently

Omani family names are transliterated in several ways, and the same person may appear as Al Busaidi on a bank card and Albusaidy on a ticket. Only the passport version matters. Match it exactly, including whether Al is joined, spaced or hyphenated.

Offering the resident or ID card number

Forms in Oman constantly ask for the civil number. The Sri Lankan form does not. Put the passport number in the passport-number field; any other identifier makes the approval impossible to match at the border.

Stretching a tourist ETA to cover a conference

Omani professionals often add a few days of leave to a work trip. If the trip includes a seminar, meeting or training session, it is a business visit and needs the business option, however much sightseeing follows.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Omani citizens

Sri Lanka maintains an embassy in Muscat. Omani citizens seeking a tourist ETA will not need its services, as the process is entirely online; the mission's work centres on Sri Lankans in Oman and on cases outside the electronic system.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Omani citizens

The questions Omani passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes. Omani citizens need an ETA, Sri Lanka's electronic travel authorisation, approved before departure. For tourist visits the government charge has been waived for Omani nationals since 25 May 2026, although the ETA remains obligatory for everyone.

Online, in English, using the details on your passport's photo page together with your arrival date and first address on the island. After you review and pay, the approval is emailed. No visit to the embassy in Muscat is involved.

Omani nationals are not charged the government fee on a tourist ETA. Our service fee for preparing the application is separate and is listed in the live prices shown on this page.

Up to 30 days from first arrival on a tourist ETA. It allows two entries within those 30 days. Staying longer means applying to the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla for an extension.

No. Apply in the nationality of the passport you hold. Whether the government charge is waived, reduced or standard depends on that country, and an Omani resident card has no effect on it.

Around three hours and forty-five minutes nonstop. Oman Air serves the route, and connections via Dubai or Doha add a few hours. Check the current schedule, as frequencies change by season.

No. The tourist ETA excludes employment whether paid or unpaid, and volunteering in a hostel, school or project falls within that. Work with a non-governmental organisation requires prior approval from the Sri Lankan government and cannot be arranged through the online ETA.

Not necessarily, and Omanis used to the khareef often enjoy it. From May to September the south-west is wet while the east coast is dry, so you can choose between green hills and sunny beaches on the same trip.
