Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for American citizens

Sri Lanka sits almost exactly on the far side of the globe from the continental United States, which is part of its appeal to American travellers and most of the reason the trip needs planning. Nobody flies twenty-odd hours for a long weekend. Americans who make the journey tend to stay two or three weeks and cover a lot of ground: the Cultural Triangle, the train through tea country to Ella, leopards in Yala and a week on the south coast.

Before any of that, every American needs an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Most people in the US search for it as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa, and for practical purposes it plays that role, but it is applied for online and tied to your passport number rather than stamped into the book at a consulate. An American who shows up at JFK, Dulles or LAX without one should expect trouble at the check-in desk.

The good news for US travellers is that Sri Lanka added the United States to its list of 40 countries whose citizens are not charged the government fee on a tourist ETA. That change took effect on 25 May 2026. It removed the government charge and nothing else, so the application, the passport rules and the conditions of stay are exactly what they were before.

Eligibility

Do American citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Yes, and the waiver has made this more confusing rather than less. Plenty of American travel forums now describe Sri Lanka as visa-free for US citizens, which is not accurate. The United States is on the waiver list for the government charge only, and an American still has to hold an approved ETA before departure.

The requirement follows the passport you present, not where you live. A green card holder living in Texas applies under the nationality printed in their own passport and may fall under a different fee category from a US citizen, while an American living in Dubai or Singapore applies as an American. Dual nationals should apply with the passport they will actually hand over in Colombo.

A tourist ETA covers the reasons most Americans go: sightseeing, a beach or surf holiday, a yoga or Ayurveda retreat, visiting relatives, or travelling to watch or take part in a sporting event. Americans heading out for meetings, a conference, a workshop or a short training course need the business option instead, and the tourist version does not stretch to cover it.

Remote work is the grey area Americans ask about most. A tourist ETA does not permit employment or self-employment in Sri Lanka, and it is not designed for someone who intends to base themselves on the island through back-to-back visits. Journalists, documentary crews and NGO staff from the US need prior government approval, which the online ETA cannot provide.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can American citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

An American on a tourist ETA is given 30 days in Sri Lanka, counted from the first day of arrival, with two entries allowed inside that period. US travellers who pair Sri Lanka with the Maldives or southern India use the second entry often, and they should know that coming back does not restart the clock. If you land on the 1st, fly to Malé on the 12th and return on the 18th, you are admitted only until the original 30 days run out.

The approval itself can be used to travel for six months from the date it is issued. That suits the way Americans book long-haul trips, usually several months out, because you can settle the ETA soon after buying flights instead of leaving it to the final week. The conditions printed on your own approval are the ones that count if they differ from anything you read elsewhere.

Sri Lanka wants six months of passport validity from the day you arrive. Adult US passports last ten years, but passports issued to children under 16 last only five, and it is the children's books that catch American families out. Check every passport in the household against your landing date in Colombo, not your departure date from the States.

Thirty days is rarely a constraint for an American itinerary, but some travellers on sabbatical or a long surf season want more. Extra time has to be requested from the Department of Immigration and Emigration at its head office in Battaramulla, just outside Colombo, before your permitted stay ends.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for American citizens

Everything US passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to US passport holders

  • A US passport book valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Sri Lanka — the wallet-sized US passport card is not valid for international air travel and cannot be used
  • Your name exactly as it appears on the passport data page, including any middle name and any suffix such as Jr. or III where it is printed in the surname or given-name line
  • The passport number copied carefully: newer US passports begin with a letter followed by eight digits, while older books carry nine digits, and the letter O is easily confused with zero
  • Dates entered in the format the form asks for, since Americans habitually write the month first and Sri Lankan forms expect the day first
  • A Visa, Mastercard or American Express card enabled for an international online transaction, as some US banks block a foreign charge until you confirm it
  • An email address you check on your phone, because the approval arrives there and US spam filters sometimes divert messages from overseas senders
  • A return or onward flight booking that you can show at the airline desk in the United States and again to an immigration officer in Colombo
  • Evidence of funds for your stay, which for most Americans simply means the cards in your wallet and a recent statement saved on your phone
  • A separate entry in the application for every child, including those under 12, who are not charged the government fee but must still be listed

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Applications from Americans are generally approved within a day or two, and many come back sooner. That is typical rather than promised, and an application lodged late on a Friday evening Eastern time lands in Sri Lanka on Saturday morning, which is worth remembering if your flight is that weekend.

Apply at least three to five days before you leave the United States. Since the approval stays usable for six months, there is no advantage in waiting, and Americans booking a trip of this length usually have flights fixed months ahead. Doing the ETA in the same sitting as your travel insurance is a sensible habit.

Allow more margin for departures over Thanksgiving week, the Christmas and New Year period and spring break in March. Those are the busiest American travel dates and they coincide with the peak months on Sri Lanka's south and west coasts, when application volumes from every country are at their highest.

On arrival

What American citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from United States

No airline flies nonstop between the United States and Sri Lanka, so every American itinerary involves at least one connection. From the East Coast and the Midwest the natural route runs through the Gulf, with a single change in Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi. From the West Coast it can be just as quick to fly across the Pacific and connect in Singapore, Tokyo or Hong Kong.

  • New York JFK, Washington Dulles, Chicago, Dallas and other US cities — Colombo (CMB) via Doha with Qatar Airways
  • New York, Boston, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle — Colombo via Dubai with Emirates
  • New York JFK, Washington and Chicago — Colombo via Abu Dhabi with Etihad
  • Most major US gateways — Colombo via Istanbul with Turkish Airlines
  • Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle — Colombo via Singapore with Singapore Airlines, or via Tokyo Narita connecting to SriLankan Airlines

Best time to go

When to travel from United States

The classic American winter escape lines up neatly with Sri Lanka's best beach weather. From December to March the south and west coasts are dry and calm, the hill country is clear, and whales are passing Mirissa. A trip over the Christmas break or during February's Presidents' Day week puts you in Galle or Bentota at the right moment.

Summer vacation is a different proposition. June, July and August bring the south-west monsoon to Colombo and the southern beaches, so American families tied to the school calendar should turn the itinerary around and head for the east coast. Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay are at their best then, and Arugam Bay draws surfers from California and Hawaii for exactly that reason.

The time difference is severe and awkward. Sri Lanka runs nine and a half hours ahead of New York during daylight saving time and ten and a half hours ahead in winter, and the gap from Los Angeles reaches thirteen and a half hours. Because Sri Lanka never changes its clocks and sits on a half-hour offset, Americans frequently miscalculate arrival days.

Two local dates deserve a note in an American diary. Monthly Poya full-moon days are public holidays on which alcohol is not sold, which surprises visitors expecting a beach-bar evening, and the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April closes much of the country for several days shortly after US spring break ends.

Avoid these

Common mistakes American citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from United States — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Reading the waiver as visa-free entry

Since May 2026, American blogs and social posts have repeated that US citizens no longer need anything for Sri Lanka. Only the government charge was removed. Americans who skip the ETA find out at the airline counter, usually with a connection in Doha or Dubai already ticking.

Getting the arrival date wrong by a day

A flight leaving the United States on a Tuesday evening typically reaches Colombo on Thursday morning. Americans often enter their departure date as the arrival date on the form, and the six-month passport rule is measured from the day you actually land.

Dropping or abbreviating the middle name

Americans are used to airline bookings that ignore middle names. The ETA should carry the full name from the passport data page, so a traveller shown as Katherine Anne Miller should not apply as Kate Miller or K. A. Miller.

Overlooking a child's five-year passport

US passports for under-16s expire after five years and cannot be renewed by mail. Families discover a short-dated child passport late, renew it in a hurry, and then realise the ETA was issued against the old number and has to be applied for again.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for American citizens

Sri Lanka is represented in the United States by its embassy in Washington and a consulate general in Los Angeles. American tourists applying for an ETA have no reason to contact either, since nothing is mailed, stamped or collected in person. The missions matter for matters the online ETA cannot cover, such as press accreditation or long-term stays.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for American citizens

The questions US passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

American citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for Sri Lanka, which is the online permission most people call a Sri Lanka visa. It must be approved before you travel. The government charge on the tourist ETA has been waived for US citizens since 25 May 2026, but holding the ETA is still mandatory.

No. The United States is one of 40 countries whose citizens are no longer charged the government fee for a tourist ETA, and that is the full extent of the change. You still apply, and you still need the approval before boarding. A service fee for our application assistance applies, and the live prices are shown on this page.

Thirty days from the date you first arrive, with two entries permitted in that window. If you leave for the Maldives or India and come back, you are given only whatever remains of the original 30 days.

No. The passport card is limited to land and sea crossings in North America and the Caribbean. For Sri Lanka you need the full passport book, with six months of validity left on the day you land in Colombo.

At least three to five days before departure, and earlier around Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break. Since the approval can be used for six months after issue, most Americans apply as soon as their flights are confirmed.

The rules for the nationality of your passport. US permanent residence does not change the ETA category, so a green card holder applies under their country of citizenship and may be charged a government fee even though US citizens are not.

Every child must be included in an application, whatever their age. Children under 12 are not charged the government fee for a tourist ETA of up to 30 days, but they are not exempt from the requirement, and each child's own US passport details are needed.

The tourist ETA is issued for holidays, family visits and similar purposes, and it does not allow employment or self-employment in Sri Lanka. It is also not meant for living on the island through repeated visits. If work is the purpose of your trip, the tourist option is the wrong one.
