Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Tongan citizens

Tonga is about as far from Sri Lanka as it is possible to be while staying in the tropics, and the number of Tongans who visit each year is tiny. Most are civil servants at Commonwealth or regional meetings, Methodist and Catholic church delegates, students bound for universities in India, and Tongans settled in Auckland or Sydney on a wider Asian trip.

The two kingdoms, one present and one past, have some things in common. Kandy was the seat of Sri Lanka's last kings, and its palace and temple complex speak to anyone from a country where the monarchy still matters. Both societies are devout, family-centred and built around obligations to relatives that visitors from elsewhere find hard to follow.

On the practical side, a Tongan passport does not get you into Sri Lanka unaided. Every Tongan citizen must have an Electronic Travel Authorisation, which is the thing people mean when they search for a Sri Lanka visa. You apply online, the approval is stored against your passport number, and airlines verify it at check-in.

Eligibility

Do Tongan citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Tongan citizens need an ETA for all short visits. Tonga was not included when Sri Lanka waived its government charge for 40 nationalities on 25 May 2026, which leaves a Tongan passport on the standard government rate. Our service fee is separate, and the live prices shown on this page bring the two together.

Many Tongans carry a second passport from New Zealand, Australia or the United States, all three of which are waiver countries. If that is you, the passport you choose determines the government charge. Choose once, and stick with that document from the application through to the immigration counter at Katunayake.

Holidays, staying with friends, sports events, cultural performances and medical or Ayurvedic treatment are all tourist purposes. A choir or dance group performing at a cultural event travels as tourists, while delegates to a church conference, a government seminar or a short training course need the business option.

Paid work is not possible on an ETA, and neither is unpaid work for a church, school or charity. Tongans are used to seasonal work schemes in New Zealand and Australia, but Sri Lanka has no equivalent arrangement through this system. A stop of up to two days between flights uses the transit option.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Tongan citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

A Tongan visitor on a tourist ETA may stay 30 days, with the first day being the day of arrival. Two entries are allowed in that span. Anyone who steps out to Malé or Chennai and returns is admitted for the days left, so a side trip late in the stay leaves very little time afterwards.

Travel must begin within six months of approval. Given how far ahead Tongans generally book long journeys, that is rarely a problem, but an approval obtained more than half a year before departure will have expired. The conditions written on your approval are decisive.

A Tongan passport needs six months of validity left on the day you arrive. Passport services are concentrated in Nuku'alofa, and people in Vava'u, Ha'apai or the Niuas need to allow for the trip. A renewed passport has a new number, and the ETA cannot follow it, so renew before applying.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Tongan citizens

Everything Tongan passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Tongan passport holders

  • A Tongan passport valid for at least six months counted from your arrival in Sri Lanka
  • Your name typed without the fakau'a or toloi, as in the machine-readable lines, so Ma'afu becomes MAAFU and Tāufa becomes TAUFA
  • Given names and family name in the fields where the passport places them, even where a noble or chiefly title is how you are usually addressed
  • The passport number copied from the photo page of the passport you will present
  • An email address of your own that you can open overseas
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international online payments, or one belonging to the family member or organisation funding the trip
  • Your first address in Sri Lanka and an arrival date that allows for no flights leaving Tonga on a Sunday
  • A return or onward ticket to show an officer who asks
  • Proof of funds, or a letter from the church, ministry or relative paying for your stay

Processing times and when to apply

Most Tongan applicants hear back within a day or two, although no period is promised. Apply three to five days before you leave Tonga at the least. A delegation should gather everyone's passports in one place and enter the details from the documents, not from memory.

Tonga is seven and a half hours ahead of Sri Lanka. When Colombo offices open in the morning it is already late afternoon in Nuku'alofa, and nothing moves in Tonga on a Sunday. An application sent late on Friday, Tongan time, is effectively a Monday application at the other end.

The busiest weeks for flights are around Christmas, the Heilala Festival in early July and the church conference season, when overseas Tongans come home in large numbers. Seats to Auckland and Nadi sell out, so have the ETA approved well before those dates instead of relying on a later flight.

On arrival

What Tongan citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Tonga

From Tonga the road to Colombo runs through Auckland or Nadi. Air New Zealand connects Fua'amotu with Auckland, where services to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur meet onward flights to Sri Lanka. Fiji Airways offers the other path, from Nuku'alofa to Nadi and then on its own aircraft to Singapore. Travellers from Vava'u need a domestic flight to Tongatapu first, and the airport is closed on Sundays.

  • Nuku'alofa Fua'amotu (TBU) to Auckland with Air New Zealand, then Auckland to Singapore and Singapore to Colombo
  • Nuku'alofa to Nadi with Fiji Airways, then Nadi to Singapore and on to Colombo
  • Nuku'alofa to Auckland, then via Sydney or Melbourne for SriLankan Airlines' nonstop to Colombo
About 21 to 25 hours with two connections, usually including an overnight in Auckland, Nadi or Singapore

Best time to go

When to travel from Tonga

Tonga's cooler season, from May to October, is when humpback whales arrive in Vava'u and when most Tongans would choose to stay put. Sri Lanka has whales of its own, blue whales and sperm whales off Mirissa from November to April, which is also the dry time on the south and west coasts.

That November to April stretch is Tonga's cyclone season, so a trip then is a reasonable trade. January and February are the pick of the months for Galle Fort, the southern beaches and the train ride through the tea country from Kandy to Ella.

Students and their families often travel around the university calendar instead, heading to India in the middle of the year. A stop in Sri Lanka at that point should favour the east coast and the ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, which stay drier than Colombo during the south-west monsoon.

Remember the cool of the highlands. Nuwara Eliya is high enough that a Tongan visitor will want a jacket after dark, something seldom needed at home outside a winter night on 'Eua. Sri Lanka's Poya days are quiet, alcohol-free public holidays each full moon.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Tongan citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Tonga — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Planning a Sunday departure

Sunday is protected by law in Tonga and aircraft do not operate. Travellers who count back from a Colombo arrival date sometimes find the first leg falls on a Sunday, and the whole plan, including the date on the ETA, shifts by a day.

Typing the glottal stop

The fakau'a in names such as 'Akau'ola or Tu'ipulotu is not carried into the machine-readable part of the passport. Leave out apostrophes and macrons so the entry matches those lines.

Switching between Tongan and New Zealand passports

Dual citizens may book with one passport and apply with the other without noticing. Only the passport named on the ETA is authorised, and the difference in government charge between the two does not carry over.

Using a tourist ETA for church work

Attending a service as a visitor is fine. Travelling to preach, teach or volunteer for a congregation over several weeks is unpaid work, which the tourist ETA excludes. Organised religious events fall under the business option.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Tongan citizens

Sri Lanka has no mission in Tonga, and the country is served from its high commissions in the region; Wellington and Canberra are the closest. None of this affects an ETA, which requires no visit, post or phone call to any mission. Ask them only about matters the online system cannot handle.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Tongan citizens

The questions Tongan passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes. Tongan citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation, popularly called a Sri Lanka visa, in advance of travel. The tourist ETA gives 30 days and two entries and is applied for online.

Yes. All you need is an internet connection, your passport and a payment card. There is no Sri Lankan office in Nuku'alofa to visit, and none is needed for an ETA.

New Zealand and Australian passports are covered by the waiver of the government charge, and a Tongan passport is not. You may apply with either if you hold both, but you must then travel on that same passport.

Leave the marks out and type the letters only, as shown in the two machine-readable lines at the bottom of your passport's photo page. Keep the order of names exactly as printed.

The usual route is Nuku'alofa to Auckland or Nadi, then Singapore, then Colombo. No flights leave Tonga on Sundays, so check the first leg carefully and confirm transit rules for each stop.

A group performing at a cultural event or sightseeing can use tourist ETAs. If the purpose is an organised religious event, symposium or conference, the business option is required for each member.

A tourist ETA allows 30 days from the first arrival. The second permitted entry does not extend that, and staying beyond it needs an extension from Sri Lanka's immigration department.

Six months at the very least, counted from the day your flight lands in Colombo. Airlines check this at the first airport, so a Tongan passport that is close to expiry should be renewed before you apply for the ETA.
