Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Honduran citizens

Few Hondurans have Sri Lanka on their list, and those who go usually have a specific reason: a diver from the Bay Islands curious about another ocean, a coffee grower who wants to see how tea is picked and processed, a couple planning a honeymoon further away than Cancún or Punta Cana. The island repays the effort with Buddhist ruins, wild elephants and a coastline that changes character from one side to the other.

Whatever the reason, the trip starts with an Electronic Travel Authorisation. Catrachos generally search for a visa para Sri Lanka, and the ETA is the document those searches describe. You request it online, it is stored against your passport number, and it needs to be approved before you check in.

Since 25 May 2026 Sri Lanka has waived its government charge on tourist ETAs for 40 nationalities. Honduras is not one of the 40, which leaves Honduran passports on the standard rate. Add our service fee for managing the application, and check the live prices shown on this page for the up-to-date figure.

Eligibility

Do Honduran citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Yes, they do. Sri Lanka makes no distinction here between one foreign passport and another: all visitors need an ETA for a short stay. A Honduran who travels to Guatemala, El Salvador or Nicaragua on a DNI under the CA-4 arrangement must use a passport for this trip and have the authorisation approved in advance.

Holidays, sightseeing, family visits, Ayurveda and yoga stays, medical care, and participation in sports events or cultural performances all belong under the tourist ETA. Working does not, and Sri Lanka counts unpaid labour as work. A dive instructor from Utila cannot guide or teach on a tourist ETA, even informally and even for a few days.

If your company is sending you to negotiate with a supplier, attend a trade seminar or follow a training course lasting less than a month, the business option applies instead. Coverage by a journalist, political activity and NGO projects are handled separately, with government approval required beforehand.

Honduran children need their own passports and their own entries in the application. The government fee is not charged for a child under 12 on a tourist ETA of up to 30 days.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Honduran citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

The tourist ETA gives a Honduran citizen 30 days from the first arrival, with two entries allowed inside that span. Suppose you land on the first of the month, leave for Chennai on the tenth and return on the fifteenth: you have until the thirtieth, the same deadline as before.

You do not have to travel immediately. The authorisation remains usable for six months after issue, with the conditions shown on the approval governing its use, so an ETA approved in July still serves a trip during the Feriado Morazánico in October.

Six months of passport validity is required on the day of arrival. Honduran passports are issued for different terms, so read the expiry date and renew at the Instituto Nacional de Migración if the margin is thin. Citas for renewal are not always available at short notice, and a new passport number means a new ETA. Remaining beyond 30 days is possible only with an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration, whose head office is in Battaramulla near Colombo.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Honduran citizens

Everything Honduran passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Honduran passport holders

  • A Honduran passport with a minimum of six months left when you land; a DNI, however new, is not accepted for travel to Sri Lanka
  • The passport number as printed on the photo page, kept distinct from the DNI number that Hondurans enter on most local forms
  • Primer apellido and segundo apellido both entered, in that order, because the passport shows two even if your airline profile shows one
  • All given names in full, with compound names such as José Ángel or María de los Ángeles typed complete and without accents
  • Spelling checked against the machine-readable lines, where ñ becomes n — Zúniga and Zuniga are the same passport, Núñez and Nunez likewise
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international online payments, tested beforehand since Honduran banks often require you to activate foreign purchases
  • Return or onward tickets and proof of funds such as recent bank statements, which are sensible to carry in print as well as on a phone
  • One passport per child, each included in the application, along with any Honduran exit authorisation needed for a minor

Simple process

How Honduran citizens apply for a Sri Lanka ETA

Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.

Step 1

Choose your ETA and travellers

Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.

Up to ten travellers
Step 2

Enter passport and trip details

Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.

Around 10 minutes
Step 3

Review, pay and submit

Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.

Fix errors before payment
Step 4

Receive your ETA by email

The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

For Honduran passport holders an ETA decision typically comes back in a day or two, although some applications are examined more closely and take longer. Nothing about the timing is guaranteed. Submit at least three to five days before your departure, and considerably earlier for Semana Santa or December travel.

Tegucigalpa is eleven and a half hours behind Colombo throughout the year. In practice the people processing your application are at their desks while Honduras sleeps, and a question raised on Tuesday may not be resolved until Thursday.

Check every field before paying. An application cannot be reopened afterwards, and a mistake in a name, a birth date or the passport number has to be corrected by applying again from scratch. The government charge from the first attempt is not refunded and cannot be applied to the second.

On arrival

What Honduran citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Honduras

Honduras has no direct connection to Sri Lanka or to the Gulf hubs that feed it. The route with the fewest complications runs through Madrid: Air Europa has linked San Pedro Sula with the Spanish capital, and where that flight does not operate on your dates, Avianca via San Salvador or Copa via Panama City will get you to Europe. From Madrid, Qatar Airways and Emirates continue to Colombo through Doha and Dubai. Itineraries through Miami or Houston are common in search results but require a US visa for a Honduran passport.

  • San Pedro Sula (SAP) — Madrid — Doha — Colombo (CMB) with Air Europa and Qatar Airways, when the Madrid flight operates
  • Palmerola (XPL) — Panama City — Istanbul — Colombo with Copa Airlines and Turkish Airlines
  • Palmerola (XPL) or San Pedro Sula (SAP) — San Salvador — Madrid — Dubai — Colombo with Avianca, Iberia and Emirates
  • San Pedro Sula (SAP) — Miami or Houston — Doha — Colombo, only with a valid US visa
Typically 30 to 38 hours from Honduras, with two or three connections

Best time to go

When to travel from Honduras

The Honduran school year runs from February to November, so December and January are when families are free to travel far. That is also high season on Sri Lanka's south and west coasts: dry days, calm sea at Unawatuna and Bentota, and clear mornings in the tea hills above Ella.

Semana Santa is the next opening. It normally falls while the south-west is still dry, and a Honduran who would otherwise spend the week at Tela or La Ceiba can spend it at Mirissa instead. If Easter is late, be aware of the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April, when much of the country shuts for family celebrations.

The Feriado Morazánico in early October lands in Sri Lanka's inter-monsoon. Showers are likely on both coasts, often short and heavy in the afternoon, so it suits the Cultural Triangle and Kandy better than a pure beach week. Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa will interest anyone who has stood among the stelae at Copán.

Between May and September the south-west monsoon is in force, and the east coast takes over. Trincomalee offers snorkelling in clear water, a useful comparison for anyone raised on the reefs of Roatán, and Arugam Bay draws surfers through to September.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Honduran citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Honduras — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

Using the DNI number

The new DNI is the document Hondurans have had to present everywhere in recent years, and its number is easily typed by reflex. Only the passport number links the ETA to you, and an approval carrying any other number is worthless at the border.

Shortening a compound name

Honduran passports spell out names such as María de los Ángeles or Juan de Dios in full. Entering only María or Juan creates a mismatch with the photo page. Type what is printed, prepositions included, leaving out only the accents.

Applying on a passport you are about to renew

With renewal appointments hard to obtain, some travellers apply for the ETA on the old passport and plan to renew later. The authorisation dies with the old passport number, so wait for the new booklet and then apply.

Choosing a route that needs a visa you do not have

Flight searches from San Pedro Sula default to connections in the United States. A Honduran passport holder needs an American visa even for a two-hour layover, and the airline will refuse boarding without it. Madrid, or Panama City and Istanbul, are the usual alternatives.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

Sri Lankan missions for Honduran citizens

No Sri Lankan embassy or consulate operates in Honduras. The resident missions closest to Tegucigalpa are the embassies in Havana and Washington DC, though a Honduran tourist will have no occasion to use them: ETA applications are completed online from start to finish.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Honduran citizens

The questions Honduran passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes. Hondurans need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) approved before they travel to Sri Lanka, and this is what is usually meant by a Sri Lanka visa. It is applied for online, tied to your passport number, and allows a 30-day tourist stay with two entries.

No. The waiver in force since 25 May 2026 covers 40 countries and does not include Honduras, so the standard government rate applies. The exception is a Honduran child under 12 travelling on a tourist ETA.

No. The DNI works for travel inside the CA-4 countries only. Sri Lanka requires a passport valid for six months from your arrival, and the ETA is recorded against that passport.

Usually a day or two, sometimes longer when an application is selected for additional checks. We recommend applying at least three to five days before you fly and earlier in December, January and Semana Santa.

Not direct ones. Hondurans normally travel to Madrid, either straight from San Pedro Sula when that service runs or via San Salvador or Panama City, and then take Qatar Airways or Emirates to Colombo. The whole journey takes 30 hours or more.

Yes. The ETA depends on the passport you hold and not on where you live. If you travel on your Honduran passport the standard rate applies; if you have become a Spanish citizen and travel on that passport, Spain is among the countries covered by the waiver.

Twice. The tourist ETA is double entry, but both entries must take place within 30 days of the first arrival, and the second is given only the days that have not yet been used.

Only by applying to the Department of Immigration and Emigration, whose head office is in Battaramulla near Colombo. It is a separate process from the ETA. Leaving and returning repeatedly to remain in the country is not permitted.
