Important for Malaysian citizens

Malaysia is included in Sri Lanka's 40-country waiver, so Malaysian passport holders pay no government charge for a tourist ETA. The ETA remains mandatory and our service fee applies; refer to the live prices shown on this page.

Overview

The Sri Lanka ETA for Malaysian citizens

Malaysia and Sri Lanka share more than an ocean. Tamil and Sinhalese families from Ceylon helped staff the railways and civil service of British Malaya, their descendants still worship at the Buddhist Maha Vihara in Brickfields and the Ceylonese temples of Kuala Lumpur, and many Malaysians travel to Jaffna, Colombo or Kandy to see relatives and ancestral villages.

Others simply go on holiday. A three-and-a-half-hour flight from KLIA delivers hill stations cooler than Cameron Highlands, wildlife on a scale not found at home, and for Muslim travellers a country where halal food and mosques are easy to find in the main towns.

Entry requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation, which Malaysians commonly look up as a Sri Lanka visa or e-visa. Malaysia is one of the 40 countries whose citizens have paid no government charge for the tourist ETA since 25 May 2026. You must still obtain it before travel, and a service fee for our assistance applies, as set out in the live prices shown on this page.

Eligibility

Do Malaysian citizens need an ETA for Sri Lanka?

Yes. ASEAN travel has accustomed Malaysians to crossing borders on a passport alone, but Sri Lanka lies outside that arrangement and asks for an ETA in advance. Sort it out before leaving for KLIA, Penang or wherever your journey begins.

The tourist ETA is right for holidays, visits to relatives, pilgrimages made as a private traveller, Ayurveda treatment, and trips to play in or follow cricket, rugby and other sporting events. Everyone on the booking needs to be included, from grandparents to babies.

Malaysian investment in Sri Lanka, most visibly in telecoms, keeps company staff travelling often. Board meetings, negotiations, conferences, seminars and training under a month need the business option. Organised religious events and symposiums are also treated as business purposes, a point worth knowing for groups invited to speak or officiate.

For a layover in Colombo of up to two days on the way to the Maldives or the Middle East, the transit ETA applies, without a government charge but with documentary proof of the onward flight. Employment and self-employment in Sri Lanka cannot be undertaken on any of these.

What a tourist ETA allows

  • Sightseeing and holidays anywhere in Sri Lanka
  • Visiting friends and relatives
  • Medical treatment, including Ayurveda and yoga programmes
  • Taking part in sporting events and competitions
  • Cultural performances and related activities
  • A short break in a longer journey, with re-entry on the same ETA

What it does not cover

  • Paid or unpaid employment, or self-employment
  • Business and trade activity, meetings and conferences — these need the business option
  • Living in Sri Lanka through frequent or successive visits
  • Media and journalism assignments, which need prior government approval
  • Political activity and work for non-governmental organisations without clearance
  • Staying beyond the period granted without an approved extension

Stay & validity

How long can Malaysian citizens stay in Sri Lanka?

Malaysian tourists are given 30 days, running from the first day in Sri Lanka. The ETA is good for two entries inside that period, useful if you hop to Chennai, Madurai or Malé mid-trip, and the second entry is admitted for the remaining days only.

An approved ETA gives a Malaysian traveller six months from its issue date in which to fly. Families can therefore apply once the year-end school holiday flights are booked and travel weeks later on the same approval. Its printed conditions always take priority.

Most Malaysian passports in circulation were issued for five years, so the six-month rule bites more often than travellers from ten-year-passport countries would expect. Count six months forward from your arrival date in Colombo, not from the day you apply. To remain beyond 30 days, an extension from the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Battaramulla is required.

Requirements

Sri Lanka ETA requirements for Malaysian citizens

Everything Malaysian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on

A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph

A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling

A credit or debit card for online payment

Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel

Specific to Malaysian passport holders

  • A Malaysian passport valid for six months from arrival; with five-year passports, check every family member's expiry date
  • The passport number from the photo page, not your MyKad number
  • Your full name exactly as the passport's single name line prints it, with BIN, BINTI, A/L or A/P kept or omitted to match the machine-readable lines
  • If the form asks for a surname and you have none, its guidance followed and all name elements kept in passport order without inventing a family name
  • Chinese Malaysian names in the passport's sequence, surname first, plus any Christian or English name only if printed there
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international online payments, with overseas and online transactions switched on in your banking app
  • An email address you check daily and can open on mobile data abroad
  • Address of your first hotel or relative's home in Sri Lanka and your date of arrival
  • Return ticket and proof of funds, kept handy for KLIA check-in and the Colombo immigration desk

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Approvals for Malaysians usually arrive within one or two days of applying. Treat that as usual, not assured, and submit at least three to five days before the flight.

The busy periods are predictable: the year-end school holidays, Chinese New Year, the Hari Raya Aidilfitri week, Deepavali, and Thaipusam for those combining temple visits. Airline promotions sell these dates months ahead, and it is wise to apply for the ETA a fortnight before flying.

Malaysia is two and a half hours ahead of Sri Lanka year-round. An application submitted on a Malaysian morning lands before the Colombo working day has begun, so do not read anything into a quiet first few hours.

On arrival

What Malaysian citizens can expect on arrival in Sri Lanka

An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

Most flights land at Colombo (CMB)

Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.

Hand over the passport you applied with

The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.

Expect a few routine questions

You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.

Check the stamp before you walk away

Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.

Getting there

Flying to Sri Lanka from Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur is one of the main gateways to Sri Lanka from South-East Asia. Malaysia Airlines, SriLankan Airlines and AirAsia fly nonstop between KLIA and Colombo in around three and a half hours, with AirAsia using Terminal 2. Travellers from Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu connect through Kuala Lumpur, and those in the south sometimes find Singapore Changi just as convenient.

  • Kuala Lumpur (KUL) — Colombo (CMB) nonstop with Malaysia Airlines
  • Kuala Lumpur — Colombo nonstop with SriLankan Airlines
  • Kuala Lumpur (KLIA Terminal 2) — Colombo nonstop with AirAsia
  • Penang, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu — Colombo with a domestic connection at Kuala Lumpur
  • Johor Bahru travellers — Colombo via Singapore Changi

Best time to go

When to travel from Malaysia

The long year-end school break is the natural time for a Malaysian family trip, and it coincides with the start of the dry season on Sri Lanka's south-west coast while the east coast of the peninsula at home is under its own monsoon. Bentota, Unawatuna and the tea country are at their best from December.

Chinese New Year and Thaipusam, in January or February, fall in the same favourable season. Hindu travellers often combine the Ramayana trail sites near Nuwara Eliya and the temples of the north with family visits. Mid-April's Sinhala and Tamil New Year is festive but busy, and many businesses close.

Hari Raya Aidilfitri moves through the calendar, so check which coast is in season the year you travel. Visiting during Ramadan is perfectly feasible: Colombo, Galle, Kandy and the east-coast towns have established Muslim communities, and restaurants in tourist areas keep normal hours.

The mid-year and August-September breaks align with the east coast season at Pasikudah, Nilaveli and Arugam Bay, and with the Kandy Esala Perahera. Wesak is a holiday in both countries and worth experiencing in Colombo. Expect humidity much like home on the coast and a chill at night in the hills.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Malaysian citizens make

Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Malaysia — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.

MyKad number instead of passport number

Malaysians enter their identity card number on almost every domestic form. The Sri Lankan ETA wants the passport number, and an approval carrying anything else has to be replaced with a new application.

Splitting a name the passport prints as one line

Malaysian passports show the name in a single field, with no marked surname. Deciding for yourself that the last word is a family name, or dropping BIN or A/P because it looks like a connector, risks a mismatch. Mirror the machine-readable lines at the bottom of the page.

Forgetting how short five years is

A passport renewed for a trip three years ago may have barely eighteen months left, and a child's even less. Check that six months will remain on the Colombo arrival date before paying for flights or the ETA.

Overseas card use switched off

Many Malaysian bank cards have overseas or online transactions disabled by default for security. A declined payment is often just this setting, so enable it before starting the application.

Passport number mistyped

The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.

Passport with under six months left

Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.

The wrong ETA type

Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.

Conditions

ETA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.

Every foreign national needs an ETA

Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.

The ETA is linked to one passport

The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.

Double entry within the stay period

A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.

Purpose decides the ETA type

A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.

Carry proof of onward travel and funds

Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.

Consular services

The Sri Lankan High Commission in Kuala Lumpur serves Malaysia for consular work and for visas that sit outside the ETA scheme. An ETA for a Malaysian tourist is obtained online with no visit to the High Commission and no passport handed in.

FAQs

Sri Lanka ETA FAQs for Malaysian citizens

The questions Malaysian passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.

Yes. Malaysians need an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation, widely referred to as a Sri Lanka visa, before they travel. It allows 30 days as a tourist with two entries, and Malaysian passports are exempt from the government charge.

The government charge is waived for Malaysian nationals applying for a tourist ETA, under the scheme that took effect on 25 May 2026. The application is not entirely without cost because our service fee applies; the live prices shown on this page have the details.

Use the name exactly as your passport prints it and keep the words in the same order. Where the form insists on separate fields, follow its guidance and the machine-readable lines on your passport, and do not create a surname that is not there.

Include them if they appear in the machine-readable lines at the foot of your passport's photo page, and leave them out if they do not. The aim is an exact match with the passport, not with your MyKad.

Malaysia Airlines, SriLankan Airlines and AirAsia operate nonstop flights of about three and a half hours. Passengers from other Malaysian airports connect in Kuala Lumpur, and schedules should be confirmed when booking.

Yes. Visiting friends and relatives is a tourist purpose. You can give a relative's home as your address in Sri Lanka, and should still carry a return ticket and proof of funds.

At least three to five days, and about two weeks before school-holiday, Chinese New Year, Hari Raya or Deepavali departures. Most approvals come within a day or two, but timing is never guaranteed.

You can, provided the second arrival is within 30 days of the first. The ETA allows two entries, and on returning from Malé you are admitted for the days that remain.
