Overview
Chileans are among the best-travelled people in Latin America, helped by a passport that needs little preparation almost anywhere. Sri Lanka is one of the places where that ease stops at the check-in desk. Without an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation attached to your passport number, the airline will not carry you to Colombo.
The ETA — also described online as the Sri Lanka visa or e-visa — is an online permission, not a sticker, and no trip to a consulate is involved. What it does require is accuracy. Chilean names run to two surnames, the passport is separate from the cédula, and a slip in either produces an authorisation that fails to match.
Santiago is about as far from Colombo as two cities can be, so this guide spends time on the practical side: the eastbound and westbound ways of getting there, how a 30-day allowance fits a wider Asian itinerary, and when Chile's summer and Fiestas Patrias breaks fall in the Sri Lankan weather calendar.

Eligibility
There is no exemption for Chile. Every Chilean visitor, from a backpacker to a cruise passenger calling at Colombo for a day, needs an ETA approved in advance. Chile does not appear among the forty nationalities relieved of the government charge on 25 May 2026, and so the standard rate is charged on a Chilean tourist application.
Chileans are used to the United States asking for an electronic authorisation before boarding, and the Sri Lankan system works on a similar principle but under entirely separate rules. Holding one does nothing for the other. The Sri Lankan ETA is its own application, with its own conditions and its own six-month window for travel.
Choose the tourist ETA for a holiday, a visit to friends, an Ayurveda or yoga stay, or to compete in or watch a sporting event. Chileans attending trade meetings — copper, wine and fruit exporters do visit — or a seminar need the business option. Employment and self-employment are closed to both.
For families, the rule on young children is helpful: under-12s are not charged the government fee on a tourist ETA of up to 30 days. They are not exempt from the ETA itself, so list every child, each with their own passport details.
Stay & validity
The tourist ETA lets a Chilean stay for 30 days and enter twice. Think of it as one block of 30 days that opens on first arrival. A second entry — after a few days in the Maldives, say — draws on whatever is left in that block.
You have six months from the issue date to make the trip. That generous window helps Chileans who apply in Santiago before a long journey through Oceania and Asia, though it also means the passport must stay the same throughout; a replacement booklet breaks the link. Always read the conditions on the approval, which are the final word.
Chile now issues adult passports for ten years, but many five-year booklets from before the change are still in circulation and nearing their end. Sri Lanka needs six months remaining when you arrive. Should 30 days prove too short, extensions are handled by the Department of Immigration and Emigration, whose head office is in Battaramulla near Colombo.

Requirements
Everything Chilean passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport valid for at least six months from the date you arrive in Sri Lanka — the same passport you will travel on
A clear image of the passport bio-data page, with every corner visible and no glare over the photograph
A working email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should be able to open while travelling
A credit or debit card for online payment
Your intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka, such as your first hotel
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with one form per traveller and a full review before you pay.
Pick the Tourist, Business or Transit option that matches the real purpose of your trip, and add every traveller in your party to the same application.
Give each traveller's details exactly as printed on the passport, plus the intended arrival date and an address in Sri Lanka. Entries are made in English.
Check every name, date and passport number on the review screen before paying. Corrections are simple at this stage and difficult afterwards.
The approval is linked electronically to your passport number. Keep a copy on your phone and a printout with your travel documents for check-in and arrival.
Chilean applications tend to come back approved inside a day or two. Allow at least three to five days before departure regardless, since an unclear scan or a name query pauses the process and no fixed turnaround is promised.
Chile's clocks move with the seasons, so Colombo is eight and a half hours ahead during the Chilean summer and nine and a half in winter. Either way, an application sent on a Santiago evening lands at the start of the Sri Lankan working day, which is a good moment to submit.
The pressure points are late December, the first weeks of February and the days before 18 September, when half of Chile seems to be travelling. If your departure falls then, apply as soon as the tickets are issued. Leaving it to the airport hotel the night before is how trips get lost.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.
Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake, about 30 kilometres north of Colombo, handles nearly all international arrivals. Follow the signs to immigration and join the foreign passport queue.
The officer retrieves your ETA from the passport number. Have the approval email to hand as a backup, on paper or saved offline, since airport connectivity is not guaranteed.
You may be asked where you are staying, how long for and when you leave. A hotel confirmation and your return ticket answer all three in a few seconds.
Your passport is endorsed with the date you must leave by. Read it at the counter — that date, not the length of your booking, is what counts if your plans change.
Getting there
No airline flies nonstop from Chile to Sri Lanka, and Santiago offers a rare choice of direction. Going east you connect through São Paulo to the Gulf or Istanbul; going west you cross the Pacific to Australia and pick up a flight to Colombo there. Regional travellers from Concepción, Antofagasta or Punta Arenas start with a domestic hop to Santiago.
Best time to go
Chile's summer holidays in January and February match the prime months for the south-west of Sri Lanka. Days are dry from Colombo down to Tangalle, the sea is calm enough for whale watching off Mirissa, and Yala's leopards are easier to find as waterholes shrink.
The winter break in July sends you to the opposite shore. Arugam Bay's point break is working, and Chilean surfers raised on the cold lefts of Pichilemu will appreciate doing it without a wetsuit. Trincomalee and Pasikudah suit those who prefer flat water.
Fiestas Patrias in mid-September catches the tail of the east coast season, and a week added to the national holiday makes a workable trip. By October the inter-monsoon rains arrive, and by November the east turns wet while the south begins to dry out again.
Coming from a dry Mediterranean climate, central Chileans often underestimate tropical humidity. Plan heavy sightseeing — the Sigiriya climb, Polonnaruwa by bicycle — for early morning. Poya full-moon days are public holidays with no alcohol sold, so a pisco-style sundowner will have to wait a day.
Avoid these
Problems are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the ones that come up most often on applications from Chile — worth a minute now rather than a new application later.
Every Chilean form asks for the RUN, and fingers type it automatically. Sri Lanka's system knows nothing of it. Only the document number on the passport photo page links the ETA to you, and an application paid with the wrong number has to be redone from scratch.
Airline bookings made abroad often keep only the apellido paterno. The ETA should not follow the ticket; it should follow the passport, which prints both. Enter González Rojas, not González, if that is what the photo page says.
Routing through Sydney or Melbourne can be quicker on paper, but changing airlines there may mean meeting Australian transit or entry requirements. Check those separately before booking — the Sri Lankan ETA covers Sri Lanka and nothing else.
Older Chilean passports were issued for five years and many expire soon. Arriving with less than six months left means refusal at check-in whatever the ETA says, and renewing afterwards makes the ETA useless because the number changes.
Passport number mistyped
The authorisation attaches to the number you enter. One wrong character produces an ETA that does not match the passport handed over at the counter, and a paid application cannot be edited afterwards.
Passport with under six months left
Sri Lanka expects six months of validity counted from the day you arrive, not the day you apply. A passport that falls short is refused at check-in regardless of the ETA.
The wrong ETA type
Attending meetings or a conference on a tourist ETA is outside its conditions. Choose the option that matches what you will actually do in the country.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Sri Lanka's Department of Immigration and Emigration and do not vary by nationality.
Sri Lanka requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for short visits by all foreign nationals, and it should be approved before you travel. Even where the government charge is waived, the authorisation itself is still required.
The authorisation is recorded against the passport number you enter. If that passport is lost, replaced or renewed before you travel, the ETA does not move across and a new application is needed.
A tourist ETA allows two entries. The stay period runs from your first arrival, so a second entry is granted only the balance of that period rather than a fresh allowance.
A tourist ETA covers holidays, family visits, medical treatment and cultural or sporting events. Business meetings, conferences and short training need the business option, and a stopover of up to two days uses the transit option.
Immigration officers at the port of entry may ask for a confirmed return or onward ticket and evidence that you can support yourself for the length of your stay.
An approved ETA lets you travel to Sri Lanka. The decision to admit you is made by an immigration officer on arrival, and the conditions printed on your approval govern your stay.
Consular services
Sri Lanka does not, to our knowledge, keep a resident embassy in Santiago, and Chile is served from a mission elsewhere in the region, with Brasília the nearest embassy. Tourists from Chile do not need it: the ETA is applied for and issued electronically.
FAQs
The questions Chilean passport holders ask most often about travelling to Sri Lanka.
Yes, in the form of an ETA. Chilean citizens must hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation before travelling, and for tourism it grants 30 days with double entry. Chile is not covered by the government-charge waiver, so the standard rate applies.
No. The cédula is valid for travel only within parts of South America. Sri Lanka requires a full passport with six months of validity from the date of arrival, and the ETA is issued against that passport.
They are closer than the map suggests, and both usually exceed 30 hours. The Gulf and Istanbul routings through São Paulo are simpler on one ticket; the Pacific route suits Chileans already visiting Australia or New Zealand.
Yes, if both are printed on your passport, which is the case for almost all Chileans. Match the passport character for character, leaving out accents the way the machine-readable lines do.
A tourist ETA allows 30 days from first arrival. Two entries are permitted within that period. Staying longer requires an extension granted by the Department of Immigration and Emigration before your permitted stay runs out.
They do. Each child needs to be included in an application with their own passport, although the government fee is not charged for children under 12 on a tourist stay of up to 30 days.
As soon as flights are confirmed. February is the peak of Chilean holiday travel, the approval remains valid for six months, and allowing more than the minimum three to five days protects you if a query comes back.
Yes, once. The tourist ETA has two entries, so a Chilean can leave for Malé and return, but the second stay is limited to the unused part of the original 30 days.
Your nationality is already set to Chile. Complete the form in around ten minutes, review every detail, and receive your ETA by email.
