A Single Entry Tourist eVisa is valid for 90 days from approval — the deadline by which you must arrive in Malaysia — and grants a stay of up to 30 days once you enter, written on the entry stamp.
The 30-day limit matters particularly for medical travel. If treatment and recovery will run longer, discuss it with the Malaysian hospital and with our team before applying, because the eVisa cannot be extended from inside the country.
Your Eritrean passport must have at least six months of validity from your arrival date and at least one blank page. The eVisa attaches to the passport number and does not transfer to a renewed document — and given the practical difficulty of renewing an Eritrean passport, check the expiry before applying rather than after.
The eVisa cannot be extended once issued. To stay beyond the 30 days granted on arrival you must leave Malaysia and apply again from outside.

Every traveller must submit the MDAC online within three days before arrival. It is not part of the eVisa, it is not optional, and airlines increasingly check it at the gate. It takes a couple of minutes and must be done for each traveller individually.
Malaysia issues the eVisa as a PDF rather than attaching it to the passport chip. Airline staff at check-in and the immigration officer on arrival both ask to see it, so carry a printed copy as well as the file on your phone.
The automated gates at KLIA are for Malaysian citizens, residents and a small number of registered categories. Visitors arriving on an eVisa are seen at a staffed counter, where the passport is stamped with the date of entry.
The officer may ask where you are staying, how long you intend to remain and how the trip is funded. Having your hotel booking, return ticket and, if you are visiting family, their address to hand makes this a thirty-second conversation.
Flying from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu or Kuching means passing through immigration again on arrival, even though it is a domestic flight. Your eVisa covers it, but keep your passport accessible rather than packed.
The stamp records the date you entered and the date by which you must leave. Overstaying in Malaysia carries fines, detention and a re-entry ban, and the stamp is the only record of your deadline — so read it while you are still at the counter.
Getting there
There is no direct service between Eritrea and Malaysia, and Asmara's international network is small. Connections run through Addis Ababa, Cairo, Dubai and Jeddah, with the Addis routing linking to the nonstop Kuala Lumpur service. Confirm current schedules rather than relying on historic routings, as service to Asmara changes.
Best time to go
Malaysia is hot and humid at sea level year-round, roughly 25°C to 33°C, which is a substantial change from Asmara's temperate highland climate at 2,300 metres. Asmara is far cooler and drier than Kuala Lumpur in any month, and the humidity is the real adjustment.
December to March is the driest window on the Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi west coast circuit, and the most comfortable period for the journey at both ends.
June to September is the best period for Sabah, Borneo and the east coast islands in Malaysia. It coincides with the Eritrean highland rains, so it is also a reasonable time to be away.
Because processing runs to four to eight weeks and the exit question has to be settled first, work backwards from your intended travel dates by at least two to three months. Applying in the season you want to travel in is not workable for this nationality.
Avoid these
Most refusals are avoidable and technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Eritrea — we check for every one of them before submitting.
A Malaysian eVisa governs entry to Malaysia and nothing else. Eritrean exit requirements operate entirely separately and are frequently the binding constraint. Resolve that first — an approved eVisa is of no use if the exit side is unresolved.
Processing runs to four to eight weeks with additional checks common, and Asmara's routings are limited. Hold refundable or changeable bookings until the eVisa PDF is in your hand.
Eritrea is not in the yellow fever endemic zone, so many travellers assume the certificate does not apply. An Addis Ababa connection can bring it into play, and Malaysia checks it at the health desk independently of your visa.
The purpose of the trip is examined closely for Eritrean applicants. A specific, documented reason — named people, named hospitals or companies, dated bookings — is far stronger than a general statement about tourism.

Insufficient proof of funds
Malaysian Immigration wants to see that you can support yourself for the whole visit. Thin statements, a balance deposited in a lump sum days before applying, or no statements at all are the leading cause of refusal.
A photograph that fails the check
Shadows across the face, a coloured or patterned background, glasses, or a scan cropped too tightly all cause rejection. Malaysia is stricter than most on the plain white background requirement.
Conditions
These conditions are set by the Department of Immigration Malaysia and do not vary by nationality. The 90-day validity and the 30-day stay are different things, and confusing them is the most common misreading of the whole scheme.
Your approval is issued against the passport number you enter. If you renew or replace that passport before travelling, the eVisa does not transfer — you must apply again on the new document, and there is no refund on the old one.
