Important for Cayman Islands travellers

The Cayman Islands issue British Overseas Territories Citizen passports, which are a different British nationality class from British Citizen. Most BOTC holders also acquired full British Citizenship in 2002 and may hold a British Citizen passport as well — and that one carries the more generous 180-day Indian stay allowance. Check which passport you hold and which you will travel on before applying; the visa must match the document you present on arrival.

Overview

The India eVisa for Cayman Islands travellers

The Cayman Islands are a British Overseas Territory, and the passport question determines everything else about an Indian visa application. Caymanians hold British Overseas Territories Citizen passports — a distinct British nationality class — but since 2002 most BOTC holders have also been entitled to full British Citizenship, and many carry both documents.

That distinction is not academic. British Citizen passport holders are in the small group India grants 180 days per visit on the long-validity tourist eVisa; BOTC holders are not, and receive the standard 90 days. If you hold both, the British Citizen passport is the better document for an extended trip.

Whichever you use, a visa granted before departure is required. There is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival. The eVisa is an electronic authorisation issued by the Government of India, linked to your passport number, with no stamp and no appointment.

Eligibility

Do Cayman Islands travellers need a visa for India?

Yes. India extends visa-free entry only to Nepal and Bhutan, and Visa on Arrival only to Japanese, South Korean and Emirati nationals. A visa is required before boarding regardless of which British passport you hold.

The first question is which document you will travel on. If you hold a British Citizen passport, apply as a UK citizen — you get 180 days per visit on the one-year and five-year tourist eVisas. If you hold only a BOTC passport, apply on that, with the standard 90-day allowance. Verify your BOTC position before assuming the eVisa route is open, as British nationality classes other than British Citizen are treated differently.

Then choose the category by purpose. Tourism, sightseeing and visiting friends fall under the tourist eVisa. Financial-services business, meetings and trade fairs require the business eVisa — the relevant category given Cayman's role as an offshore financial centre. Hospital treatment requires the medical eVisa. Employment, journalism, research and long-term study need a regular visa from an Indian mission.

Stay & validity

How long can Cayman Islands travellers stay in India?

On a British Citizen passport the tourist eVisa permits up to 180 days per visit on the one-year and five-year multiple-entry versions — the extended allowance India grants to only four nationalities. On a BOTC passport the standard 90 days per visit applies.

The 30-day version allows double entry either way, with its 30 days counted from your arrival date. On the longer visas, validity begins on the date the Indian government grants the application rather than the date you land.

The eVisa is bound to a single passport number, so you must enter India on the document the visa was issued against. If you hold both a British Citizen and a BOTC passport, decide before applying and use one consistently across visa, ticket and boarding.

The business eVisa allows up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window. The medical eVisa gives 60 days from first entry with triple entry.

Processing times and when to apply

Standard processing takes 48 to 72 hours and express handling 24 to 48 hours. Both are business-day estimates, and Indian public holidays — numerous and often state-specific — extend them.

Apply at least two weeks before departure. Resolve the passport question first — it changes your stay allowance and, if you need a US transit visa, that takes far longer than the eVisa.

Mandatory from October 2025

You also need the India e-Arrival Card

Separate from your eVisa, every foreign national entering India must complete the digital e-Arrival Card before boarding. It replaces the old paper disembarkation form and is required on every single visit, whatever visa you hold.

Getting there

Flying to India from Cayman Island

Cayman's long-haul options run largely through the United States or London. British Airways serves Grand Cayman from London, which avoids US transit and connects into Heathrow's dense Indian network. Total journey times run 22 to 30 hours.

  • Grand Cayman (GCM) — London Heathrow with British Airways, then nonstop to seven Indian cities
  • Grand Cayman (GCM) — via Miami, New York or Atlanta — requires a US visa or ESTA
  • Grand Cayman (GCM) — via Kingston or Panama City and then a European hub
  • The London routing is usually the most practical and gives the widest Indian choice
  • Heathrow serves Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi and Amritsar nonstop
22–30 hours total, typically two flights via London

Best time to go

When to travel from Cayman Island

October to March is India's dry season and the best window for the classic circuits. It also avoids the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June to November and can disrupt Caribbean departures.

Cayman's own peak season runs December to April, overlapping with India's best weather, so if you work in financial services or tourism the shoulder months of October, November and early December may suit better — all of which are excellent in India.

Avoid the northern plains in May and June, when temperatures exceed 45°C. India is 10.5 hours ahead of Cayman time, so with 22-plus hours in transit plan a genuine rest day on arrival.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Cayman Islands travellers make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Cayman Island — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Not checking which British passport you hold

The defining issue here, and it has a concrete consequence. A British Citizen passport gets you 180 days per visit on the long-validity tourist eVisa; a BOTC passport gets 90. Most Caymanians became eligible for full British Citizenship in 2002 and many hold both documents. If you are planning an extended trip and hold both, the British Citizen passport is materially better.

Mixing the two passports

The eVisa is tied to a specific passport number and you must enter India on that document. Applying on the British Citizen passport and travelling on the BOTC one, or vice versa, means arriving with a visa that does not match. Decide before applying.

Booking a US-transit routing without a US visa

Most convenient Cayman long-haul itineraries connect through Miami, New York or Atlanta, and a US connection requires a US visa or ESTA even if you never leave the airport. The London Heathrow routing avoids the issue entirely and gives access to seven Indian cities nonstop.

Travelling on a tourist eVisa for financial-services business

Client meetings, due diligence visits and fund business are commercial activities requiring the business eVisa — which permits 180 days per visit regardless of which British passport you hold.

Travelling during hurricane season without margin

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November. On a 25-hour, two-connection itinerary a disrupted Caribbean departure cascades badly. Build in margin, or travel between December and May.

Photo rejected on technical grounds

By far the most common cause of delay. The photograph must be square, on a plain white background, with your full face visible and no shadow behind your head. Cropped selfies and phone photos taken against a cream wall are routinely bounced back.

Passport scan unreadable

Glare across the machine-readable zone, a cut-off corner, or a scan where the passport number is blurred will stall the application. Photograph the page flat, in daylight, with no flash.

Applying too close to departure

The eVisa must be granted before you fly, and airlines check it at the gate. Applications submitted the night before a flight leave no room for a document re-upload.

Conditions

India eVisa rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by the Government of India and do not vary by nationality. They are worth reading before you book, because two of them — the port-of-entry rule and the restricted-areas rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

Your passport must be valid for six months

Validity is measured from your date of arrival in India, not from the date you apply. You also need at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

Enter through a designated eVisa port only

The India eVisa is accepted at India's designated eVisa airports and authorised seaports. It cannot be used to cross a land border, so overland arrivals from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh or Pakistan need a different visa.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own eVisa and their own passport, including infants and children. Children cannot be added to a parent's application.

Restricted and Protected Areas need a separate permit

An eVisa does not grant access to Protected Areas, Restricted Areas or Cantonment Areas. Parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep require a Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit in addition to your visa.

The eVisa is non-extendable and non-convertible

You cannot extend an eVisa from inside India or convert it into another visa category. If your plans change, you must leave and apply again.

Standard passports only

Diplomatic, official and service passports are not eligible for the eVisa route, and neither are international travel documents or refugee travel documents.

Consular services

Indian missions in Cayman Island

There is no resident Indian mission in the Cayman Islands. Consular matters are handled by an Indian mission in the region or in the UK under concurrent accreditation. That has no bearing on your eVisa, which is entirely online — but confirm coverage if you need a student, employment or research visa, or an OCI card.

FAQs

India visa FAQs for Cayman Islands travellers

The questions Cayman Islands passport holders ask most often about applying for an Indian eVisa.

No, and the difference matters. British Overseas Territories Citizen is a distinct British nationality class, and it does not carry the 180-day Indian stay allowance that British Citizen passports do — BOTC holders get the standard 90 days per visit. Most Caymanians also became entitled to full British Citizenship in 2002 and many hold both documents. If you are planning an extended trip and hold both, the British Citizen passport is materially better.

Decide before you apply and use that one document consistently. The eVisa is tied to a specific passport number and you must enter India on the passport the visa was issued against. For a long trip the British Citizen passport gives 180 days per visit against the BOTC's 90 — but whichever you choose, keep it consistent across visa, ticket and boarding.

Only if your routing connects through the United States — and most convenient options do, via Miami, New York or Atlanta. A US connection requires a US visa or ESTA even if you never leave the airport. British Airways serves Grand Cayman from London Heathrow, which avoids US transit entirely and connects into seven Indian cities nonstop.

It depends on your passport. On a British Citizen passport, up to 180 days per visit on the one-year or five-year tourist eVisa. On a BOTC passport, the standard 90 days per visit. The 30-day version allows 30 days with double entry either way. The business eVisa permits 180 days per visit regardless.

The business eVisa. Client meetings, due diligence visits and fund business are commercial activities the tourist eVisa does not cover. You will need an invitation letter from the Indian entity on its letterhead. It permits up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window.

Via London Heathrow with British Airways. It avoids US transit entirely and Heathrow has the densest Indian network in Europe — nonstop to Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi and Amritsar. Total journey time is 22 to 30 hours as two flights.

It can. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November, and on a 25-hour itinerary a disrupted Caribbean departure cascades badly. If you are travelling for fixed dates, build in real margin or travel between December and May — which is India's best season anyway.

Fees are set by nationality and duration, so the figures differ between a British Citizen and a BOTC passport. The pricing panel on this page loads live figures for the applicable nationality across all available options, and the amount shown is the full cost including our service fee.
