Overview
Israel sends a remarkable number of travellers to India relative to its population, and the pattern is unlike almost any other market: long independent trips, frequently by young travellers after military service, concentrated on a well-worn circuit through Himachal Pradesh, Rishikesh, Goa and Hampi. Alongside that sits a substantial business relationship in technology, agriculture and defence, and a steady flow of shorter corporate trips.
Every Israeli citizen needs a visa granted before departure. There is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival. For tourism, business and medical travel the eVisa handles it entirely online: an electronic authorisation issued by the Government of India, linked to your passport number, with no stamp and no consular appointment.
Israeli passport holders receive up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa, and the five-year multiple-entry version is available. The 90-day cap is the number that matters most in this market, because the classic Israeli trip to India is often planned as four, five or six months — and that requires deliberate structuring rather than a single visa.
At a glance
Eligibility
Yes. India extends visa-free entry only to Nepal and Bhutan, and Visa on Arrival only to Japanese, South Korean and Emirati nationals. Israeli citizens must hold an approved visa before boarding, and your airline will verify it at the gate at Ben Gurion.
Choose the category by purpose. Tourism, backpacking, trekking, visiting friends, and yoga or meditation retreats fall under the tourist eVisa. Business meetings, trade fairs, supplier visits and technical discussions require the business eVisa. Hospital treatment requires the medical eVisa. Employment, journalism, academic research and long-term study are outside the eVisa scheme and need a regular visa from the embassy in Tel Aviv.
Israeli passport stamps have no bearing on Indian visa eligibility — a question that comes up often. India maintains full diplomatic relations with Israel, and travel history is not an obstacle. What does require care is the reverse situation: some countries on a longer regional itinerary do restrict entry based on Israeli stamps, so plan the whole route rather than just the Indian leg.
Stay & validity
Israeli citizens are permitted up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows double entry, with its 30 days counted from your arrival date. The one-year and five-year versions are multiple-entry, with validity starting on the date the Indian government grants the application.
The 90-day per-visit cap is the central planning constraint for the long Israeli trip. A six-month itinerary through Himachal Pradesh, Rishikesh, Goa and the south exceeds it, and the eVisa cannot be extended or converted from inside India. On a multiple-entry visa the workable approach is to leave India before day 90 — Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand are the usual choices — and re-enter on a fresh 90-day allowance. Overstaying carries fines and can lead to a ban on future entry.
For a genuinely continuous long stay, a regular tourist visa from the embassy in Tel Aviv is the better route than trying to stretch an eVisa. Work that out before you book a one-way ticket.
The business eVisa allows up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window. The medical eVisa gives 60 days from first entry with triple entry.

Requirements
Everything Israeli passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality or visa type.
Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date
Recent passport-style photograph — square format, plain white background, full face visible, no shadows and no headwear other than for religious reasons
A valid credit or debit card to pay the government fee and service charge
Your return or onward ticket details, or at minimum your intended departure date
The address where you will be staying for your first night in India
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with our team checking every field before anything reaches the Indian authorities.
Enter your passport details exactly as printed, choose your visa type and duration, and upload your photo and passport data page.
Our team checks your photo dimensions, passport scan clarity, name spelling and date formats before anything is submitted.
Your application goes to the Government of India on your behalf, and we keep you posted at every status change.
Print it or keep it on your phone, and we explain exactly how to present it at your port of entry in India.
Standard processing takes 48 to 72 hours and express handling 24 to 48 hours. Both are business-day estimates, and Indian public holidays — numerous and often state-specific — extend them.
Apply at least a week before departure, ideally two, so a rejected photograph can be replaced without paying twice for express handling. Applications open 120 days ahead, but on one-year and five-year visas validity runs from the grant date, so applying that early wastes what you have paid for.
Note the weekend mismatch: the Israeli working week runs Sunday to Thursday while India's runs Monday to Friday, so only Monday to Thursday are full working days in both countries. A Thursday application loses more time than you might expect.
Separate from your eVisa, every foreign national entering India must complete the digital e-Arrival Card before boarding. It replaces the old paper disembarkation form and is required on every single visit, whatever visa you hold.
Getting there
Nonstop service between Tel Aviv and Delhi has operated but has been intermittent, so schedules should be checked close to your travel date. Gulf and European connections are the reliable fallback and open up a wider set of Indian arrival cities.
Best time to go
The Israeli circuit through India splits neatly by season, which is worth planning around. Himachal Pradesh — Manali, Kasol, Dharamkot — is a summer destination, best from May to October, and effectively closed by snow in winter. Goa and the south are winter destinations, best from November to March. The classic long trip follows that rhythm: north in summer, south in winter.
That is why the 90-day cap bites so hard in this market: a genuine north-then-south itinerary spans both seasons and therefore more than 90 days. Structure it as two entries on a multiple-entry visa, with an exit to Nepal, Sri Lanka or Thailand in between.
Rishikesh is best from September to November and February to April; the summer is hot and the monsoon makes the Ganges unsafe for rafting. Avoid the northern plains in May and June, when temperatures exceed 45°C. India is 2.5 to 3.5 hours ahead of Israeli time depending on daylight saving, so jet lag is minimal.
Avoid these
Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Israel — we check for every one of them before submitting.
The defining error in this market. The classic Israeli trip to India runs four to six months, and the eVisa caps you at 90 days per visit with no extension possible from inside India. Plan an exit and re-entry on a multiple-entry visa, or apply for a regular tourist visa at the embassy in Tel Aviv for a continuous long stay. Overstaying carries fines and can result in a future entry ban.
Hebrew names have multiple valid Latin transliterations — Yosef or Josef, Chaim or Haim, Tzvi or Zvi, Cohen or Kohen. Your passport uses one specific form and the eVisa must match it exactly, as must your airline ticket. Applicants who use a spelling from an older document create a mismatch that Indian immigration will query.
Common among long-trip travellers, and a genuine risk at check-in. Airlines can and do refuse boarding where there is no evidence of onward travel within the visa's validity. Hold a refundable onward booking even if you intend to change it.
It does not. Protected and Restricted Areas — parts of Ladakh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram — require a separate permit in addition to your visa, arranged inside India. Relevant for anyone extending the Himachal circuit further into the Himalaya.
It will not, on an eVisa. This matters particularly here, because Nepal is the usual place to reset a 90-day allowance. The eVisa is valid only at designated airports and authorised seaports, so your re-entry must be by air — fly back in rather than crossing at Sunauli or Kakarbhitta.
Photo rejected on technical grounds
By far the most common cause of delay. The photograph must be square, on a plain white background, with your full face visible and no shadow behind your head. Cropped selfies and phone photos taken against a cream wall are routinely bounced back.
Passport scan unreadable
Glare across the machine-readable zone, a cut-off corner, or a scan where the passport number is blurred will stall the application. Photograph the page flat, in daylight, with no flash.
Applying too close to departure
The eVisa must be granted before you fly, and airlines check it at the gate. Applications submitted the night before a flight leave no room for a document re-upload.
Conditions
These conditions are set by the Government of India and do not vary by nationality. They are worth reading before you book, because two of them — the port-of-entry rule and the restricted-areas rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.
Validity is measured from your date of arrival in India, not from the date you apply. You also need at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.
The India eVisa is accepted at India's designated eVisa airports and authorised seaports. It cannot be used to cross a land border, so overland arrivals from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh or Pakistan need a different visa.
Every person travelling needs their own eVisa and their own passport, including infants and children. Children cannot be added to a parent's application.
An eVisa does not grant access to Protected Areas, Restricted Areas or Cantonment Areas. Parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep require a Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit in addition to your visa.
You cannot extend an eVisa from inside India or convert it into another visa category. If your plans change, you must leave and apply again.
Diplomatic, official and service passports are not eligible for the eVisa route, and neither are international travel documents or refugee travel documents.
Consular services
The embassy in Tel Aviv is not involved in eVisa applications, which are handled entirely online. It is, however, the route for a regular tourist visa if you need a continuous stay longer than 90 days — worth approaching before you book a long open-ended trip. It also handles employment, journalism, research and student visas, and OCI matters.
FAQs
The questions Israeli passport holders ask most often about applying for an Indian eVisa.
Up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows 30 days with double entry. The business eVisa permits up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window, and the medical eVisa 60 days from first entry with triple entry.
Not on a single eVisa entry — the cap is 90 days per visit and the eVisa cannot be extended from inside India. There are two workable routes. On a one-year or five-year multiple-entry eVisa, leave India before day 90 (Nepal, Sri Lanka or Thailand are the usual choices) and re-enter by air on a fresh 90-day allowance. Alternatively, apply for a regular tourist visa at the Embassy of India in Tel Aviv, which can allow a continuous longer stay. Decide which before you book a one-way ticket.
No — this catches people out precisely because Nepal is the usual place to reset. The eVisa is valid only at India's designated airports and authorised seaports, so your re-entry must be by air. Fly Kathmandu to Delhi rather than crossing at a land border, or you will be refused entry.
No. India maintains full diplomatic relations with Israel and your travel history is not an obstacle to an Indian visa. The reverse can be true elsewhere: if your wider itinerary includes countries that restrict entry based on Israeli stamps, plan the whole route rather than just the Indian leg.
Exactly as it is transliterated on your current passport, character for character. Hebrew names have several valid Latin forms — Chaim and Haim, Tzvi and Zvi — and only the passport spelling is correct for the visa. Make sure your airline ticket matches too, because Indian immigration compares the eVisa against the passport.
Nonstop Tel Aviv–Delhi service has operated but has been intermittent, so verify current schedules when booking. Gulf connections via Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Doha, and European connections via Istanbul, Athens, Amsterdam or Frankfurt, are the reliable alternatives and open up more Indian arrival cities including Kochi and Goa.
They are opposite seasons, which is why the classic long trip follows the weather. Himachal Pradesh — Manali, Kasol, Dharamkot — is best from May to October and largely snowed in during winter. Goa and the south are best from November to March. A full north-then-south itinerary therefore spans both seasons and more than 90 days, so plan the visa structure accordingly.
Sometimes. The eVisa gets you into India, but Protected and Restricted Areas — including parts of Ladakh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram — require a separate Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit. These are arranged inside India, usually through a licensed operator, and take longer than the visa itself.
