Important for Jamaican citizens

Almost every convenient routing from Jamaica to India connects through the United States or Canada, and both require a visa even for a transit where you never leave the airport. Your India eVisa does not help with that. If you do not hold a US or Canadian visa, look at routings via London, Panama City or Bogotá instead — this is the single biggest practical obstacle on this route.

Overview

The India eVisa for Jamaican citizens

Jamaica has a smaller but genuine Indian-descended community, dating from indentured migration between 1845 and 1917, and Indian influence persists in Jamaican food, language and religious life. Travel to India is a mix of ancestral and cultural interest, medical treatment, business and education.

The dominant practical challenge is not the visa but the journey. There is no nonstop service, total travel time runs 22 to 30 hours, and most of the convenient routings connect through the United States — which brings its own visa requirement. Working out the routing before you book is genuinely the most important planning step.

Every Jamaican citizen needs a visa granted before departure. There is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival. For tourism, business and medical travel the eVisa handles it entirely online, and Jamaican passport holders receive up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa.

Eligibility

Do Jamaican citizens need a visa for India?

Yes. India extends visa-free entry only to Nepal and Bhutan, and Visa on Arrival only to Japanese, South Korean and Emirati nationals. Jamaican citizens must hold an approved visa before boarding, and because every routing involves a connection, the check can happen at Kingston or Montego Bay, or at a hub.

Choose the category by purpose. Tourism, sightseeing, cultural and ancestral travel and visiting friends fall under the tourist eVisa. Business meetings, trade fairs and supplier visits require the business eVisa — relevant given the bauxite and agricultural trade. Treatment at an Indian hospital requires the medical eVisa. Employment, journalism, academic research and long-term study are outside the eVisa scheme and need a regular visa from an Indian mission.

If you or a parent were born in India or previously held an Indian passport, you must declare it. India does not permit dual citizenship, and renunciation documentation is generally required. For most Jamaican families with indenture-era ancestry this does not apply.

Stay & validity

How long can Jamaican citizens stay in India?

Jamaican citizens are permitted up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows double entry, with its 30 days counted from your arrival date. The one-year and five-year versions are multiple-entry, and their validity begins on the date the Indian government grants the application.

Given the journey involved, Jamaican trips tend to be long, and 90 days per visit comfortably accommodates that. The eVisa cannot be extended or converted from inside India, so build the full plan before you submit.

For medical travel the medical eVisa is the better instrument: 60 days from first entry with triple entry, structured around treatment plus follow-up consultations, with medical attendant visas available for accompanying family.

The business eVisa allows up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window — double the tourist allowance.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Standard processing takes 48 to 72 hours and express handling 24 to 48 hours. Both are business-day estimates, and Indian public holidays — numerous and often state-specific — extend them.

Apply at least two weeks before departure. But note that the Indian visa is rarely the critical path on this route: if you need a US or Canadian transit visa, that takes far longer and should be started months ahead. Resolve the routing question first, then the Indian eVisa.

Mandatory from October 2025

You also need the India e-Arrival Card

Separate from your eVisa, every foreign national entering India must complete the digital e-Arrival Card before boarding. It replaces the old paper disembarkation form and is required on every single visit, whatever visa you hold.

Getting there

Flying to India from Jamaica

There is no nonstop service between Jamaica and India, and the routing choice is dominated by transit visa requirements rather than time. Total travel times run 22 to 30 hours. Your eVisa is checked at your Indian arrival airport, not in transit.

  • Kingston (KIN) — Delhi or Mumbai via London Heathrow, which avoids US transit entirely
  • Kingston (KIN) — Delhi or Mumbai via New York, Miami, Atlanta or Toronto — requires a US or Canadian visa
  • Kingston (KIN) — Delhi via Panama City or Bogotá and then a European or Gulf hub
  • Montego Bay (MBJ) — via Kingston, London or a US hub
  • The London routing is usually the most practical for travellers without a US visa
22–30 hours total, with one or two connections

Best time to go

When to travel from Jamaica

October to March is India's dry season and the best window for the classic circuits. It also avoids the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June to November and can disrupt Caribbean departures — worth factoring in when a missed connection cascades across a 25-hour itinerary.

Divali in October or November and Holi in March both fall inside India's good season and are worth timing towards if the cultural connection is part of your reason for travelling.

Avoid the northern plains in May and June, when temperatures exceed 45°C — considerably hotter and drier than anything in Jamaica. The Indian monsoon from June to September will feel more familiar but does disrupt regional flights and trains. India is 10.5 hours ahead of Jamaican time, close to the maximum displacement, so plan a genuine rest day on arrival.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Jamaican citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Jamaica — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Booking a US-transit routing without a US visa

By far the most consequential error on this route, and the reason it is flagged at the top of the page. Most convenient Kingston long-haul itineraries connect through the United States, and a US connection requires a US visa even if you never leave the airport. The same applies to Canadian transits. Your India eVisa is irrelevant to this. Resolve the routing before you buy tickets, and consider the London option, which avoids it entirely.

Assuming the Indian visa is the long lead time

It is not. An Indian eVisa takes 24 to 72 hours. A US or Canadian transit visa can take months. If your routing needs one, that is the critical path — start it first and treat the Indian eVisa as the quick final step.

Not declaring a parent's Indian birth or passport

Indenture-era ancestry creates no complication. But if you or a parent were born in India or held an Indian passport, that must be declared, and renunciation documentation is generally required — India does not recognise dual citizenship.

Travelling during hurricane season without margin

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November. On a 25-hour, two-connection itinerary, a disrupted Caribbean departure cascades badly and can put you outside your booked arrival window. Build in margin, or travel between December and May.

Assuming the 180-day allowance applies

Jamaican citizens receive 90 days per visit, not the 180 days granted to American, British, Canadian and Japanese nationals. The eVisa cannot be extended from inside India.

Photo rejected on technical grounds

By far the most common cause of delay. The photograph must be square, on a plain white background, with your full face visible and no shadow behind your head. Cropped selfies and phone photos taken against a cream wall are routinely bounced back.

Passport scan unreadable

Glare across the machine-readable zone, a cut-off corner, or a scan where the passport number is blurred will stall the application. Photograph the page flat, in daylight, with no flash.

Applying too close to departure

The eVisa must be granted before you fly, and airlines check it at the gate. Applications submitted the night before a flight leave no room for a document re-upload.

Conditions

India eVisa rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by the Government of India and do not vary by nationality. They are worth reading before you book, because two of them — the port-of-entry rule and the restricted-areas rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

Your passport must be valid for six months

Validity is measured from your date of arrival in India, not from the date you apply. You also need at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

Enter through a designated eVisa port only

The India eVisa is accepted at India's designated eVisa airports and authorised seaports. It cannot be used to cross a land border, so overland arrivals from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh or Pakistan need a different visa.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own eVisa and their own passport, including infants and children. Children cannot be added to a parent's application.

Restricted and Protected Areas need a separate permit

An eVisa does not grant access to Protected Areas, Restricted Areas or Cantonment Areas. Parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep require a Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit in addition to your visa.

The eVisa is non-extendable and non-convertible

You cannot extend an eVisa from inside India or convert it into another visa category. If your plans change, you must leave and apply again.

Standard passports only

Diplomatic, official and service passports are not eligible for the eVisa route, and neither are international travel documents or refugee travel documents.

Consular services

Indian missions in Jamaica

The Indian mission serving Jamaica is not involved in eVisa applications, which are handled entirely online. It covers what the eVisa cannot: employment, journalism, research and long-term student visas, OCI cards and Surrender Certificates, and consular services for Indian nationals in Jamaica.

FAQs

India visa FAQs for Jamaican citizens

The questions Jamaican passport holders ask most often about applying for an Indian eVisa.

Only if your routing connects through the United States — but most of the convenient ones do, via New York, Miami or Atlanta. A US connection requires a US visa even if you never leave the airport, and the same applies to Canadian transits via Toronto. Your India eVisa has no bearing on it. The London Heathrow routing avoids the issue entirely and is usually the more practical choice if you do not hold a US visa.

The transit visa, without question. An Indian eVisa takes 24 to 72 hours; a US or Canadian visa can take months. If your routing requires one, that is the critical path. Sort the routing and any transit visa first, then apply for the Indian eVisa two weeks before departure.

Up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa — comfortably enough for the long trips that justify the journey. The 30-day version allows 30 days with double entry. The business eVisa permits up to 180 days per visit within a one-year window, and the medical eVisa 60 days from first entry with triple entry.

Fees are set by nationality and duration, so the pricing panel on this page loads live figures for Jamaican passport holders across all available options. You can compare 30-day, one-year and five-year prices side by side, and the amount shown is the full cost including our service fee.

No. Every routing involves at least one connection and most involve two, with total travel times of 22 to 30 hours. The main options are via London Heathrow — which avoids US transit — or via New York, Miami, Atlanta or Toronto, which require a US or Canadian visa. Panama City and Bogotá are further alternatives.

No. Indenture-era descent creates no complication — a standard eVisa is what you need. The question only arises if you or a parent were born in India or held an Indian passport, in which case you must declare it and will generally need renunciation documentation, since India does not permit dual citizenship.

December to March. That gives you India's dry season and avoids the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June to November and can disrupt Caribbean departures — a real consideration on a 25-hour itinerary where a missed connection cascades. Divali in October or November and Holi in March are both worth timing towards.

No. Indian Visa on Arrival is limited to Japanese, South Korean and Emirati nationals. Jamaican citizens need an approved visa before boarding, and it will be checked before you are allowed to fly.
