Important for Malagasy citizens

Madagascar is not on India's yellow-fever list, so a certificate is not normally required. But India applies the requirement on transit as well as origin — a routing with a stopover in Nairobi, Addis Ababa or another affected country can trigger it. Check against your specific itinerary, because without a valid certificate you can be quarantined on arrival for up to six days.

Overview

The India eVisa for Malagasy citizens

Madagascar has a long-standing Indian-origin merchant community — the Karana, largely of Gujarati descent — who have been part of the island's commercial life for generations. That gives the relationship a family and trade dimension alongside the medical travel that dominates most East African routes to India.

Antananarivo connects to India through Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Mauritius or a Gulf hub. Mauritius is a particularly useful option, with direct Air Mauritius service onward to Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai.

Every Malagasy citizen needs a visa granted before departure. There is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival. The eVisa is an electronic authorisation issued by the Government of India, linked to your passport number, with no stamp and no appointment. Malagasy passport holders receive up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa.

Eligibility

Do Malagasy citizens need a visa for India?

Yes. India extends visa-free entry only to Nepal and Bhutan, and Visa on Arrival only to Japanese, South Korean and Emirati nationals. Malagasy citizens must hold an approved visa before boarding, and because every routing involves a connection, the check often happens at Antananarivo.

Choose the category by purpose. Treatment at an Indian hospital requires the medical eVisa, which allows accompanying family to travel as medical attendants. Trade meetings, sourcing trips and supplier visits require the business eVisa. Tourism, visiting relatives and heritage travel fall under the tourist eVisa. Employment, journalism, academic research and long-term study are outside the eVisa scheme and need a regular visa from the embassy in Antananarivo.

If you were born in India or previously held an Indian passport, you must declare it. India does not permit dual citizenship, and you will generally need a Surrender Certificate. For members of the Karana community whose families settled generations ago and who have never held Indian nationality, a standard eVisa is all that is needed — but if you travel to India regularly, an OCI card may be the better long-term instrument.

Stay & validity

How long can Malagasy citizens stay in India?

Malagasy citizens are permitted up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows double entry, with its 30 days counted from your arrival date. The one-year and five-year versions are multiple-entry, and their validity begins on the date the Indian government grants the application.

For medical travel the medical eVisa is the better instrument: 60 days from first entry with triple entry, structured around treatment plus follow-up consultations, with medical attendant visas available for accompanying family.

For trade the business eVisa allows up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window — double the tourist allowance, and for buyers travelling several times a year the five-year version is much better value.

The eVisa cannot be extended or converted from inside India, and it is valid only at designated airports and authorised seaports.

Requirements

India eVisa requirements for Malagasy citizens

Everything Malagasy passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality or visa type.

Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date

Recent passport-style photograph — square format, plain white background, full face visible, no shadows and no headwear other than for religious reasons

A valid credit or debit card to pay the government fee and service charge

Your return or onward ticket details, or at minimum your intended departure date

The address where you will be staying for your first night in India

Specific to Malagasy passport holders

  • A regular Malagasy passport valid at least six months beyond your arrival date, with two or more blank pages
  • A yellow-fever certificate if your routing transits an affected country — check against your specific itinerary
  • Your full name exactly as printed on the passport, including all given names in the printed order
  • Accented characters handled consistently: your passport's machine-readable zone strips them
  • A square digital photograph on a plain white background with your full face visible
  • A clear colour scan of the passport bio-data page
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international payments, as the fee is charged in USD — the card need not belong to the traveller
  • Your first night's address in India — a relative's address is perfectly acceptable — and your onward or return flight details
  • If you were born in India or previously held an Indian passport: documentation of renunciation of Indian citizenship
  • For the medical eVisa: a letter from a hospital on India's recognised list

Processing times and when to apply

Standard processing takes 48 to 72 hours and express handling 24 to 48 hours. Both are business-day estimates, and Indian public holidays — numerous and often state-specific — extend them.

Apply at least ten days before departure. If your routing transits a yellow-fever affected country, the vaccination needs ten days to become valid, so establish that first. For medical travel, request the hospital letter as soon as your appointment is confirmed.

Mandatory from October 2025

You also need the India e-Arrival Card

Separate from your eVisa, every foreign national entering India must complete the digital e-Arrival Card before boarding. It replaces the old paper disembarkation form and is required on every single visit, whatever visa you hold.

Getting there

Flying to India from Madagascar

There is no nonstop service between Madagascar and India. Every routing involves at least one connection, most commonly through Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Mauritius or a Gulf hub. Mauritius is particularly useful, with direct Air Mauritius service onward to three Indian cities.

  • Antananarivo (TNR) — Mumbai, Delhi or Chennai via Mauritius, which has direct Air Mauritius service to all three
  • Antananarivo (TNR) — Mumbai or Delhi via Nairobi, which has nonstop Indian service
  • Antananarivo (TNR) — Mumbai or Delhi via Addis Ababa with Ethiopian
  • Gulf routings via Dubai and Doha reach a wider set of Indian cities
  • The Mauritius routing avoids transiting a yellow-fever affected country, which can simplify entry requirements
12–19 hours total, with one or two connections

Best time to go

When to travel from Madagascar

October to March is India's dry season and the most comfortable window for both leisure travel and medical treatment. Note that this overlaps with Madagascar's cyclone season from November to April, which can disrupt departures — worth building margin into a fixed-appointment trip.

For medical travel the Indian hospital calendar matters as much as the weather. Diwali and Holi affect staffing and elective scheduling at private hospitals. Confirm dates directly with the hospital.

For Gujarat, the ancestral region for much of the Karana community, November to February is ideal. Avoid the northern plains in May and June, when temperatures exceed 45°C. India is 2.5 hours ahead of Malagasy time.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Malagasy citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Madagascar — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Assuming no yellow-fever requirement regardless of routing

Madagascar is not on India's yellow-fever list, so the certificate is not normally required — but India applies the requirement on transit as well as origin. A routing with a stopover in Nairobi, Addis Ababa or another affected country can trigger it. Check against your specific itinerary, because without a valid certificate you can be quarantined for up to six days. The Mauritius routing avoids the question.

The dual-citizenship question

Relevant given the long-established Karana community. India does not recognise dual citizenship. If you were born in India or ever held an Indian passport, you must declare it and will generally need a Surrender Certificate. If your family settled generations ago and you have never held Indian nationality, a standard eVisa is all you need — but if you travel regularly, consider an OCI card.

Using a tourist eVisa for hospital treatment

The medical eVisa allows triple entry for follow-up consultations and lets accompanying family apply as medical attendants. Indian hospitals increasingly ask which visa you hold.

Not allowing for cyclone season

Madagascar's cyclone season runs November to April, which overlaps with India's best travel window. Departures can be disrupted at short notice, so build margin into any trip with a fixed appointment at the other end.

Travelling on a tourist eVisa for sourcing trips

Inspecting goods, negotiating with suppliers and attending trade fairs are commercial activities requiring the business eVisa — which is also more generous at 180 days per visit against 90.

Photo rejected on technical grounds

By far the most common cause of delay. The photograph must be square, on a plain white background, with your full face visible and no shadow behind your head. Cropped selfies and phone photos taken against a cream wall are routinely bounced back.

Passport scan unreadable

Glare across the machine-readable zone, a cut-off corner, or a scan where the passport number is blurred will stall the application. Photograph the page flat, in daylight, with no flash.

Applying too close to departure

The eVisa must be granted before you fly, and airlines check it at the gate. Applications submitted the night before a flight leave no room for a document re-upload.

Conditions

India eVisa rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by the Government of India and do not vary by nationality. They are worth reading before you book, because two of them — the port-of-entry rule and the restricted-areas rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

Your passport must be valid for six months

Validity is measured from your date of arrival in India, not from the date you apply. You also need at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

Enter through a designated eVisa port only

The India eVisa is accepted at India's designated eVisa airports and authorised seaports. It cannot be used to cross a land border, so overland arrivals from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh or Pakistan need a different visa.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own eVisa and their own passport, including infants and children. Children cannot be added to a parent's application.

Restricted and Protected Areas need a separate permit

An eVisa does not grant access to Protected Areas, Restricted Areas or Cantonment Areas. Parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep require a Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit in addition to your visa.

The eVisa is non-extendable and non-convertible

You cannot extend an eVisa from inside India or convert it into another visa category. If your plans change, you must leave and apply again.

Standard passports only

Diplomatic, official and service passports are not eligible for the eVisa route, and neither are international travel documents or refugee travel documents.

Consular services

Indian missions in Madagascar

The embassy in Antananarivo is not involved in eVisa applications, which are handled entirely online. It covers what the eVisa cannot: OCI cards and Surrender Certificates — relevant for the Karana community — plus student, employment, journalism and research visas, and regular medical visas for extended treatment.

FAQs

India visa FAQs for Malagasy citizens

The questions Malagasy passport holders ask most often about applying for an Indian eVisa.

Not normally — Madagascar is not on India's yellow-fever list. But India applies the requirement based on countries you have transited as well as your origin, so a routing with a stopover in Nairobi, Addis Ababa or another affected country can trigger it. Check against your specific itinerary, because without a valid certificate you can be quarantined on arrival for up to six days. The Mauritius routing avoids the question entirely.

It depends on the generation. If you were born in India or previously held an Indian passport, you must declare it and will generally need a Surrender Certificate, because India does not permit dual citizenship. If your family has been in Madagascar for generations and you have never held Indian nationality, a standard eVisa is all you need. If you visit India regularly, an OCI card is worth investigating.

Up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows 30 days with double entry. The medical eVisa gives 60 days from first entry with triple entry, and the business eVisa up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window.

Via Mauritius is often the most convenient — Air Mauritius has direct service onward to Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai, and the routing avoids transiting a yellow-fever affected country. Nairobi has nonstop Indian service, and Addis Ababa with Ethiopian is often the best value. Total journey time is 12 to 19 hours.

The medical eVisa. It allows 60 days from first entry with triple entry — designed around treatment plus follow-up consultations — and accompanying family members can apply for medical attendant visas linked to your application. You will need a letter from the treating hospital, which must be on India's recognised list.

It can. Madagascar's cyclone season runs November to April, which overlaps with India's best travel window, and departures can be disrupted at short notice. If you are travelling for a fixed hospital appointment, build real margin into the itinerary rather than booking a tight connection.

Fees are set by nationality and duration, so the pricing panel on this page loads live figures for Malagasy passport holders across all available options. You can compare 30-day, one-year and five-year prices side by side, and the amount shown is the full cost including our service fee.

No. Indian Visa on Arrival is limited to Japanese, South Korean and Emirati nationals. Malagasy citizens need an approved visa before boarding, and because every routing involves a connection, your airline may check it at Antananarivo.
