New Zealand eTA for Indonesian Citizens

Indonesia is on New Zealand's transit visa waiver list. An NZeTA lets you transit through Auckland Airport, but visiting New Zealand requires a Visitor Visa applied for before you travel.

Overview

The New Zealand eTA for Indonesian citizens

Indonesia sits on New Zealand's transit visa waiver list rather than the full visa waiver list, and the distinction is the single most important thing to understand before booking. It means an NZeTA can carry you through Auckland Airport on the way somewhere else, but it does not let you into the country.

That surprises a lot of travellers, because Indonesia and New Zealand have a substantial relationship — education, agriculture, dairy and a growing tourism interest — and because Auckland has at times been served directly from Denpasar. A direct flight does not change the entry rules: an Indonesian passport holder arriving in Auckland to actually visit needs a Visitor Visa granted before departure.

The practical upshot is that most Indonesian travellers reading this page need a Visitor Visa, not an NZeTA. The NZeTA is relevant only if Auckland is a connection point on the way to South America or the Pacific islands.

Eligibility

Do Indonesian citizens need a visa for New Zealand?

It depends entirely on what you are doing. If you are changing planes at Auckland and continuing to another country within 24 hours, the transit visa waiver applies and an NZeTA is what you need. If you intend to leave the airport for any reason — a holiday, a family visit, a business meeting, even a single night in a hotel — you need a New Zealand Visitor Visa instead.

The Visitor Visa is a full application rather than an automated authorisation. It requires supporting documents, evidence of funds, an explanation of your travel plans and, in some cases, medical or police certificates. Processing takes weeks rather than minutes, so it must be started well before you book non-refundable flights.

Work and study are separate again. New Zealand has no working holiday scheme available to Indonesian nationals in the way it does for waiver countries, and employment requires an employer-supported work visa. Study of any length requires a student visa — the three-month visitor concession that applies to waiver nationalities is not available to you on a transit authorisation.

Stay & validity

How long can Indonesian citizens transit through New Zealand?

The transit concession is narrow: transit through Auckland International Airport only, a maximum of 24 hours, and you remain in the international transit area for the whole layover. You cannot clear immigration, collect checked baggage, leave the terminal or stay at an off-airport hotel.

An NZeTA issued on this basis is still valid for two years and covers multiple transits, so a route you use regularly is covered by a single authorisation. What it never becomes, however long you hold it, is permission to enter New Zealand.

If your connection exceeds 24 hours — an overnight layover with a morning departure, for instance — the transit waiver does not cover it. You would need a Transit Visa or a Visitor Visa, applied for in advance. This catches out travellers whose itinerary looks like a normal connection but crosses the 24-hour line.

Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure from New Zealand, and you need a confirmed onward ticket plus, where required, a valid visa for your onward destination. Airlines check both before boarding.

Requirements

New Zealand eTA requirements for Indonesian citizens

Everything Indonesian passport holders need before starting a request. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date

Recent passport-style photograph — full face visible against a plain light background, taken within the last six months, no headwear other than for religious reasons

A valid email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling

A credit or debit card to pay the NZeTA request fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy together

Your onward or return ticket details — border officers can ask to see evidence that you intend to leave

Specific to Indonesian passport holders

  • A valid Indonesian passport with at least three months of validity beyond your transit through New Zealand
  • Your name entered exactly as printed on the passport, including single-name entries where the passport shows only one field
  • A recent colour photograph with your full face visible against a plain light background — a hijab is acceptable provided the full face is unobstructed
  • A confirmed onward ticket departing New Zealand within 24 hours of arrival
  • A valid visa for your onward destination where that country requires one — airlines verify this at Jakarta or Denpasar
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international payment
  • An email address you can access while travelling, since the approval is delivered there only
  • Truthful answers to the character questions, covering convictions carrying five years or more at any time and convictions in the last ten years carrying twelve months or more
  • A New Zealand Visitor Visa instead of an NZeTA if you intend to leave the airport for any reason
  • Every traveller needs their own authorisation, including children and infants

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

NZeTA requests for transit are usually approved within minutes, though Immigration New Zealand advises allowing up to 72 hours. A Visitor Visa, which is what most Indonesian travellers actually need, is an entirely different proposition — allow several weeks and expect to provide supporting documents.

The practical advice is to decide which one you need before you book anything. Travellers who buy a ticket assuming an NZeTA will cover a holiday in New Zealand, then discover they need a Visitor Visa, frequently cannot get one in time and lose the fare. Start the Visitor Visa process first, then book.

Transit conditions

The rules that apply to Indonesian travellers in transit

Transit without a visa is a narrow permission with hard limits. Read these before you book a connection through Auckland — a routing that breaks any one of them needs a different authorisation.

Auckland only

Transit without a visa is available at Auckland International Airport and nowhere else in New Zealand. You cannot transit through Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown on this basis.

24 hours maximum

You must depart within 24 hours of arriving. Overnight connections that exceed that window need a Transit Visa or a Visitor Visa instead.

You stay airside

You remain in the international transit area for the whole layover. You cannot clear immigration, collect checked luggage, leave the terminal or spend the night in an off-airport hotel.

Onward documentation is checked

You need a confirmed ticket to your next destination and, where that destination requires one, a valid visa for it. Airlines verify both before boarding.

Getting there

Flying to New Zealand from Indonesia

Auckland is a plausible connection point for Indonesian travellers heading to South America or the South Pacific, and Indonesia has had direct services to Auckland from Denpasar at various times. For travel to New Zealand itself, the routing is straightforward — the paperwork is the obstacle, not the flights.

  • Denpasar (DPS) — Auckland direct services have operated seasonally; check current schedules
  • Jakarta (CGK) via Singapore — Singapore Airlines onward to Auckland or Christchurch
  • Jakarta via Kuala Lumpur — Malaysia Airlines onward to Auckland
  • Jakarta or Denpasar via Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane — the most common routing
  • Auckland onward to Santiago, Buenos Aires or the Pacific islands — the transit use case
About 12–18 hours from Jakarta depending on the routing

Best time to go

When to travel from Indonesia

For a genuine transit the season is irrelevant — you never leave the terminal. For a visit on a Visitor Visa, New Zealand's summer of December to February gives the best conditions and coincides with the Indonesian school holidays, making it the busiest window.

March to May and September to November are the value windows for a visit, with settled weather and far fewer visitors. Fares out of Jakarta and Denpasar are also lower outside the December peak.

New Zealand is four to five hours ahead of Jakarta depending on southern daylight saving, so jet lag is minimal in either direction.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Indonesian citizens make

Declines are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on requests from Indonesia — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Assuming the NZeTA allows a visit

By far the most consequential error. Indonesia is on the transit waiver list, not the visa waiver list. An NZeTA obtained for transit does not permit entry to New Zealand, and a traveller who arrives intending a holiday on one is refused entry at the border and sent back.

An overnight layover that exceeds 24 hours

The transit concession has a hard 24-hour limit. Connections that arrive late and depart the following afternoon can cross it without the traveller noticing. Check the elapsed time between your arrival and departure before relying on the waiver.

Single-name passports entered incorrectly

Many Indonesian passports record only one name. Enter it exactly as the machine-readable zone shows, in the field the passport uses. Splitting a single name across surname and given-name fields, or inventing one, causes a mismatch at check-in.

Booking flights before starting the Visitor Visa

A Visitor Visa takes weeks and requires supporting documents. Travellers who book first and apply second frequently run out of time and lose non-refundable fares. Get the visa process moving before you commit to dates.

Passport number mistyped

By far the most common problem. The authorisation is attached to the number you enter, so a single wrong character produces an NZeTA that does not exist as far as the airline is concerned.

An undeclared conviction

Immigration New Zealand asks about convictions, deportations and previous refusals. Undisclosed history found later is treated far more seriously than the original offence.

A photograph that fails the check

Shadows across the face, glasses, a busy background or a cropped chin all cause the automated check to reject an image, which turns an instant approval into a manual review.

Conditions

NZeTA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Immigration New Zealand and do not vary by nationality. Two of them — the passport-linking rule and the cruise rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

The NZeTA is linked to one passport

Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you entered. There is no label in your passport and nothing to print for immigration. If you renew or replace that passport, the NZeTA does not transfer — you must request a new one.

One request per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own NZeTA, including newborns and children. A child cannot be added to a parent's request, and each one needs their own valid passport.

Valid for two years, multiple entry

An approved NZeTA lasts two years from the date it is issued and can be used for any number of trips in that period, provided your passport remains valid. It cannot be extended — when it expires you simply request a new one.

The IVL is paid at the same time

The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy funds conservation and tourism infrastructure and is charged alongside the NZeTA request. It currently stands at NZD 100 and is payable once per NZeTA, not once per trip.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An NZeTA lets you board. The decision to admit you is made by a border officer at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown, who can ask about your funds, your accommodation and your intended departure.

Cruise arrivals need one too

Since October 2019 every cruise passenger arriving in New Zealand by sea needs an NZeTA or a visa, regardless of nationality — including passengers whose nationality would otherwise be exempt.

Consular services

New Zealand missions in Indonesia

Unlike waiver-country pages, the Embassy genuinely matters here — because most Indonesian travellers need a Visitor Visa rather than an NZeTA, and that process runs through Immigration New Zealand with supporting documents and biometrics collected at a visa application centre. The NZeTA itself, where it applies, is still handled entirely online.

FAQs

New Zealand eTA FAQs for Indonesian citizens

The questions Indonesian passport holders ask most often about travelling to New Zealand.

Yes, for a visit. Indonesia is on New Zealand's transit visa waiver list, not the full visa waiver list. An NZeTA only covers changing planes at Auckland within 24 hours. To visit New Zealand — for tourism, family, business or anything else — you need a Visitor Visa applied for before you travel.

The NZeTA is an automated authorisation that lets you transit Auckland airside for up to 24 hours. The Visitor Visa is a full application, assessed by an immigration officer with supporting documents, that permits you to enter and stay in New Zealand. They are not interchangeable and the NZeTA cannot be upgraded.

No. Under the transit waiver you must remain in the international transit area for the entire layover, which cannot exceed 24 hours. You cannot clear immigration, collect checked bags or leave the terminal. If you want to spend a night in Auckland, you need a Visitor Visa or a Transit Visa.

Several weeks, and longer at busy times. It requires supporting documents including evidence of funds, travel plans and sometimes medical or police certificates. Start the process well before booking non-refundable flights — that is the single most useful piece of advice on this page.

No. The concession is capped at 24 hours. A 30-hour connection needs a Transit Visa or a Visitor Visa applied for in advance. Check the elapsed time between arrival and departure carefully, since an overnight connection can cross the line without being obvious.

Exactly as the machine-readable zone at the bottom of your passport photo page records it, in the field the passport itself uses. Do not split a single name across two fields or invent a second one — the airline compares your authorisation against the passport, and a mismatch stops you boarding.

Not on an NZeTA. Study of any length requires a student visa, and employment requires an employer-supported work visa — the three-month study concession available to visa waiver nationalities does not apply to you. Both must be granted before you travel.
