Overview

The New Zealand eTA for Norwegian citizens

Norway and New Zealand have an obvious geographic affinity — fiords, mountains, sparse populations, long coastlines — and Norwegian visitors gravitate to Fiordland and the Southern Alps for exactly that reason. The comparison between Milford Sound and the Norwegian fjords is one Norwegian travellers make constantly, usually favourably in both directions.

Oslo has no nonstop service to New Zealand. Routings run through the Gulf hubs, Helsinki or a European gateway, with total journey times of around 28 to 32 hours from Oslo and more from Bergen, Trondheim or Tromsø.

Norway is on New Zealand's visa waiver list, so there is no visitor visa to apply for. Since October 2019 every traveller needs an NZeTA — an online authorisation held against your passport number and checked by the airline before departure.

Eligibility

Do Norwegian citizens need a visa for New Zealand?

No visa, but an NZeTA is required. Norwegian citizens can enter New Zealand for tourism, visiting family, business meetings, conferences or transit for up to 90 days under the visa waiver.

Norway has a Working Holiday arrangement with New Zealand for applicants aged 18 to 30, granting twelve months with the right to work. It is a separate visa applied for before travel and cannot be arranged from an NZeTA once you have arrived.

Eligibility follows the passport rather than residence. Residents of Norway holding non-waiver passports need a New Zealand Visitor Visa applied for well in advance — a Norwegian residence permit carries no weight with Immigration New Zealand.

Stay & validity

How long can Norwegian citizens stay in New Zealand?

Norwegian passport holders may stay up to 90 days per visit. The NZeTA lasts two years from approval and permits unlimited entries in that window, so the cap applies to each individual stay.

Norwegian trips tend to be long and outdoors-focused, and a full South Island season can approach the ceiling. Extending requires a Visitor Visa applied for from inside New Zealand before your existing permission expires, assessed on its merits.

The authorisation is bound to one passport number for two years. Norwegian passports are issued for ten years for adults and shorter periods for children, so families are more likely than solo travellers to hit a renewal inside the window.

New Zealand requires three months of passport validity beyond your departure. Norwegian routings through Dubai, Doha or Singapore may apply a six-month rule of their own, and the strictest requirement on the itinerary governs.

Requirements

New Zealand eTA requirements for Norwegian citizens

Everything Norwegian passport holders need before starting a request. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date

Recent passport-style photograph — full face visible against a plain light background, taken within the last six months, no headwear other than for religious reasons

A valid email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling

A credit or debit card to pay the NZeTA request fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy together

Your onward or return ticket details — border officers can ask to see evidence that you intend to leave

Specific to Norwegian passport holders

  • A valid Norwegian passport with at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure from New Zealand
  • Your name entered exactly as printed, with æ, ø and å rendered as the machine-readable zone shows them
  • A recent colour photograph with your full face visible against a plain light background
  • A credit or debit card to pay the request fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy together
  • An email address you can access while travelling, since the approval is delivered there only
  • Truthful answers to the character questions, covering convictions carrying five years or more at any time and convictions in the last ten years carrying twelve months or more
  • Disclosure of any deportation, removal or refusal of entry from any country
  • Onward or return travel details, which border officers at Auckland can ask to see
  • Residents of Norway holding a non-waiver passport must apply for a Visitor Visa on their own nationality
  • Every traveller needs their own NZeTA, including children and infants

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Norwegian requests are approved automatically in most cases, often within minutes. Immigration New Zealand advises allowing up to 72 hours because a minority are referred to an officer, usually over a photograph the automated check cannot read.

Apply at least a week before departure. Norwegian itineraries often involve two connections — a domestic or Nordic leg followed by a long-haul hub — so a problem at the first desk collapses the whole booking rather than one sector.

Getting there

Flying to New Zealand from Norway

There is no nonstop service between Norway and New Zealand. Oslo connects through Dubai, Doha, Helsinki and the major European hubs, with total journey times of around 28 to 32 hours.

  • Oslo (OSL) via Dubai or Doha — Emirates and Qatar Airways to Auckland
  • Oslo via Helsinki — Finnair to Asia, then onward to Auckland
  • Oslo via Amsterdam, Frankfurt or London to a Gulf or Asian hub
  • Oslo via Singapore — Singapore Airlines to Auckland or Christchurch
  • Bergen, Stavanger, Trondheim and Tromsø — connect through Oslo or Copenhagen
28–32 hours total from Oslo with one or two stops

Best time to go

When to travel from Norway

New Zealand's summer of December to February is the inverse of the Norwegian winter and gives the longest daylight and best conditions across Fiordland and the Southern Alps. It is peak season, so Milford, Routeburn and Kepler hut bookings open months ahead and fill quickly.

February to April is the strongest value window — settled autumn weather, warm sea into March, and far fewer visitors on the Great Walks. October and November are the spring equivalent.

The Norwegian summer of June to August falls in the New Zealand winter. Ski touring in the Southern Alps is excellent and the country is quiet, but daylight is short by Norwegian summer standards. New Zealand is 10 to 12 hours ahead of Norway depending on daylight saving in both countries.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Norwegian citizens make

Declines are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on requests from Norway — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Norwegian characters entered as printed

The machine-readable zone renders æ as AE, ø as OE and å as AA or A depending on the document. The NZeTA must match that encoded version rather than the printed form, because the airline system compares against the machine-readable zone.

Arriving on an NZeTA intending to work

The Working Holiday Scheme must be granted before you travel. Seasonal work on visitor terms is a breach of your entry conditions and is actively checked in the horticulture regions where Norwegian travellers commonly look for it.

Assuming Fiordland conditions match home

Not an immigration issue, but the most consequential practical error. Fiordland receives some of the highest rainfall in the world, weather changes far faster than in the Norwegian fjords, and hut and track closures are common. Plan more conservatively than the map suggests.

Renewing the passport during the two years

The authorisation sits against one passport number and does not survive a renewal. There is no transfer process, and the mismatch is only found when the new document is scanned at check-in.

Passport number mistyped

By far the most common problem. The authorisation is attached to the number you enter, so a single wrong character produces an NZeTA that does not exist as far as the airline is concerned.

An undeclared conviction

Immigration New Zealand asks about convictions, deportations and previous refusals. Undisclosed history found later is treated far more seriously than the original offence.

A photograph that fails the check

Shadows across the face, glasses, a busy background or a cropped chin all cause the automated check to reject an image, which turns an instant approval into a manual review.

Conditions

NZeTA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Immigration New Zealand and do not vary by nationality. Two of them — the passport-linking rule and the cruise rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

The NZeTA is linked to one passport

Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you entered. There is no label in your passport and nothing to print for immigration. If you renew or replace that passport, the NZeTA does not transfer — you must request a new one.

One request per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own NZeTA, including newborns and children. A child cannot be added to a parent's request, and each one needs their own valid passport.

Valid for two years, multiple entry

An approved NZeTA lasts two years from the date it is issued and can be used for any number of trips in that period, provided your passport remains valid. It cannot be extended — when it expires you simply request a new one.

The IVL is paid at the same time

The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy funds conservation and tourism infrastructure and is charged alongside the NZeTA request. It currently stands at NZD 100 and is payable once per NZeTA, not once per trip.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An NZeTA lets you board. The decision to admit you is made by a border officer at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown, who can ask about your funds, your accommodation and your intended departure.

Cruise arrivals need one too

Since October 2019 every cruise passenger arriving in New Zealand by sea needs an NZeTA or a visa, regardless of nationality — including passengers whose nationality would otherwise be exempt.

Consular services

New Zealand missions in Norway

New Zealand's Nordic mission is in Stockholm and is accredited to Norway, with an honorary consulate in Oslo. Neither is involved in an NZeTA request, which is completed entirely online. They handle work visas, student visas, residence applications and consular assistance for New Zealanders in Norway.

FAQs

New Zealand eTA FAQs for Norwegian citizens

The questions Norwegian passport holders ask most often about travelling to New Zealand.

No visitor visa is required — Norway is on New Zealand's visa waiver list. You do need an NZeTA, requested online before departure and checked by the airline at Oslo or wherever you first board. It covers stays of up to 90 days.

Up to 90 days per visit. The NZeTA lasts two years and allows unlimited entries in that period, but each individual stay is capped at 90 days. Only British citizens receive a longer allowance.

Use the version shown in the machine-readable zone at the bottom of your passport photo page, which renders these characters in plain Roman letters. That encoded form is what airline systems compare your NZeTA against at check-in.

The cost is the government request fee plus the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, currently NZD 100, both charged together. The pricing panel on this page loads the live all-in figure for Norwegian passport holders including our service fee.

No. Norwegian citizens aged 18 to 30 can apply for the Working Holiday Scheme, giving twelve months with the right to work, but it is a separate visa that must be granted before you travel.

December to March gives the longest daylight and the most settled conditions, though Fiordland is one of the wettest places on earth in any season. Great Walk bookings for Milford, Routeburn and Kepler open months ahead and fill within days, so secure those before booking flights.
