Overview

The New Zealand eTA for UK citizens

Britain has the deepest ties to New Zealand of any European country, and the travel pattern reflects it: visiting family and friends accounts for a far larger share of UK arrivals than it does for any other long-haul market. Around a quarter of a million British visitors arrive in a typical year, many of them staying for weeks rather than days.

That relationship is written into the entry rules. British citizens are the only nationality granted six months per visit under New Zealand's visa waiver, rather than the 90 days everyone else receives. It is a genuine advantage, and it is the single most useful thing for a British traveller to know before planning a trip.

What has not changed is the paperwork at the front end. Since October 2019 every British traveller needs an NZeTA before boarding — a travel authorisation requested online, linked electronically to your passport, and checked by the airline at Heathrow, Gatwick or Manchester before you are allowed on the plane. It is not a visa, there is no appointment, and there is nothing stamped in your passport.

Eligibility

Do UK citizens need a visa for New Zealand?

You do not need a visa, but you do need an NZeTA. The United Kingdom sits on New Zealand's visa waiver list, so British citizens travel for tourism, family visits, business meetings or transit without a visitor visa. The NZeTA is the pre-clearance step that replaced it.

The six-month allowance applies specifically to British citizens. If your passport describes you as a British National (Overseas), British Overseas Territories Citizen, British Overseas Citizen, British Subject or British Protected Person, the six-month rule does not apply to you and your eligibility for the waiver at all depends on the category — worth checking carefully before you book, because these passports look similar at a glance.

The waiver covers visiting, not working. British citizens taking up a job in New Zealand need a work visa arranged before travel. The Working Holiday Scheme is unusually generous for Britons — open to ages 18 to 35 and lasting up to 23 months, longer than almost any other nationality receives — but it is a separate visa application and cannot be improvised once you have arrived on an NZeTA.

Stay & validity

How long can UK citizens stay in New Zealand?

British citizens may stay up to six months in any twelve-month period on a single visit, which is double the 90 days granted to Americans, Germans, Japanese and everyone else on the waiver list. It is the reason extended trips, working sabbaticals and long family stays are so much more practical on a British passport.

The NZeTA itself lasts two years from approval and covers as many trips as you want in that window. The six-month allowance is a limit on time spent in New Zealand, not on the number of entries — but be aware that Immigration New Zealand looks at the pattern across the whole twelve months, so leaving for a fortnight in Australia and returning does not reset the clock.

The authorisation is tied to one passport number for its full two years. A British passport renewal in the interim voids it, with no way to transfer it across. Given that a great many British trips to New Zealand are booked a year or more ahead, it is worth confirming your passport expiry before requesting an NZeTA rather than after.

New Zealand requires at least three months of passport validity beyond your departure date from the country. That is more relaxed than the six-month rule British travellers are used to elsewhere, but if your itinerary routes through Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong or Australia, the strictest requirement on the whole journey is the one that governs.

Requirements

New Zealand eTA requirements for UK citizens

Everything British passport holders need before starting a request. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date

Recent passport-style photograph — full face visible against a plain light background, taken within the last six months, no headwear other than for religious reasons

A valid email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling

A credit or debit card to pay the NZeTA request fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy together

Your onward or return ticket details — border officers can ask to see evidence that you intend to leave

Specific to British passport holders

  • A valid British citizen passport with at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure from New Zealand
  • Your name entered exactly as it appears in the passport, including all given names
  • A recent colour photograph with your full face visible against a plain light background
  • A credit or debit card to pay the request fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy together
  • An email address you can reach while abroad, since the approval is sent there and nowhere else
  • Honest answers to the character questions, covering convictions carrying a sentence of five years or more at any time, and convictions in the last ten years carrying twelve months or more
  • Disclosure of any previous refusal of entry, deportation or removal from New Zealand or any other country
  • Onward or return travel details — border officers at Auckland can ask for evidence you intend to leave
  • Holders of British National (Overseas), British Overseas Territories, British Overseas Citizen, British Subject or British Protected Person passports must check their status separately, as the six-month allowance does not apply
  • Each traveller needs their own NZeTA, including children and infants on a parent's lap

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

The overwhelming majority of British requests are approved automatically, often within minutes of submission. Immigration New Zealand asks travellers to allow up to 72 hours because a minority are referred for manual assessment — nearly always a photograph the system cannot read, or a declared conviction.

Apply at least a week before you fly, and ideally when you book. British itineraries to New Zealand almost always involve a connection in Dubai, Doha, Singapore, Hong Kong or Los Angeles, and a problem discovered at Heathrow leaves no realistic way to fix it before the first leg departs. A week of margin costs nothing and removes the risk entirely.

Getting there

Flying to New Zealand from United Kingdom

There is no nonstop flight between the UK and New Zealand — the journey is roughly 24 to 30 hours in total with one stop, and the choice of hub is mostly a choice about how you want to break it up. Air New Zealand no longer serves London directly, so every routing involves a partner carrier or an alliance connection.

  • London Heathrow via Singapore — Singapore Airlines to Auckland or Christchurch, the most popular routing and the easiest to break with a stopover
  • London Heathrow via Dubai or Doha — Emirates and Qatar Airways to Auckland, with Emirates flying one of the longest sectors in the world into Auckland
  • London Heathrow via Hong Kong — Cathay Pacific to Auckland, competitive on total journey time
  • London Heathrow via Los Angeles or San Francisco — Air New Zealand onward, worth considering if you want to add a US stop
  • Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham — connect via a Gulf hub or Amsterdam rather than routing through London

Best time to go

When to travel from United Kingdom

New Zealand's summer runs from December to February, which for British travellers means swapping a dark, wet British winter for long evenings and settled weather. It is the peak season, and the combination of Christmas holidays and the New Zealand school break makes December and January the most expensive and the most crowded time to visit Queenstown and the Bay of Islands.

The value windows are March to May and September to November. March is arguably the best month of all — warm, settled, quieter, with autumn colour arriving in Central Otago by April. October and November suit British travellers wanting spring in Fiordland and lambing across the Canterbury plains without summer prices.

Because British visitors so often come for extended stays, the six-month allowance opens up an option almost no other nationality has: arriving in the New Zealand spring and leaving in early autumn, covering the entire good-weather season on one trip. Note that New Zealand is 11 to 13 hours ahead of the UK depending on daylight saving in both countries, so you arrive two calendar days after you leave and come home the same day you departed.

Avoid these

Common mistakes UK citizens make

Declines are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on requests from United Kingdom — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Assuming the six months resets at the border

The allowance is six months in a twelve-month period, not six months per entry with the counter reset by a short trip abroad. A fortnight in Sydney partway through does not buy another six months on return, and Immigration New Zealand assesses the whole twelve-month pattern. Extended stays planned around a reset run into trouble.

Travelling on the wrong kind of British passport

British citizen, British National (Overseas), British Overseas Territories Citizen and British Subject passports look broadly alike but confer different rights. Only British citizens get the six-month allowance, and some of the other categories are not covered by the visa waiver at all. Check the wording on the observations page before you assume you qualify.

Leaving the request until the day of travel

Airlines check the NZeTA at the London check-in desk, not on arrival. Because British routings involve a Gulf or Asian connection, being turned away at Heathrow means the whole itinerary collapses, not just one leg. There is no way to obtain an NZeTA at the airport.

Renewing the passport mid-validity

Two years is long enough to span a passport renewal, particularly if you requested the NZeTA for a trip and are returning on a second one later. The authorisation cannot move to a new document, so a renewal quietly voids it and the airline will refuse boarding on the new passport.

Confusing the NZeTA with a Working Holiday Visa

The UK Working Holiday Scheme is exceptionally generous — up to 23 months for applicants aged 18 to 35 — and a great many young British travellers intend to use it. It is an entirely separate visa with its own application, funds requirement and medical conditions. Arriving on an NZeTA with the intention of working is a straightforward breach and can result in removal.

Passport number mistyped

By far the most common problem. The authorisation is attached to the number you enter, so a single wrong character produces an NZeTA that does not exist as far as the airline is concerned.

An undeclared conviction

Immigration New Zealand asks about convictions, deportations and previous refusals. Undisclosed history found later is treated far more seriously than the original offence.

A photograph that fails the check

Shadows across the face, glasses, a busy background or a cropped chin all cause the automated check to reject an image, which turns an instant approval into a manual review.

Conditions

NZeTA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Immigration New Zealand and do not vary by nationality. Two of them — the passport-linking rule and the cruise rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

The NZeTA is linked to one passport

Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you entered. There is no label in your passport and nothing to print for immigration. If you renew or replace that passport, the NZeTA does not transfer — you must request a new one.

One request per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own NZeTA, including newborns and children. A child cannot be added to a parent's request, and each one needs their own valid passport.

Valid for two years, multiple entry

An approved NZeTA lasts two years from the date it is issued and can be used for any number of trips in that period, provided your passport remains valid. It cannot be extended — when it expires you simply request a new one.

The IVL is paid at the same time

The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy funds conservation and tourism infrastructure and is charged alongside the NZeTA request. It currently stands at NZD 100 and is payable once per NZeTA, not once per trip.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An NZeTA lets you board. The decision to admit you is made by a border officer at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown, who can ask about your funds, your accommodation and your intended departure.

Cruise arrivals need one too

Since October 2019 every cruise passenger arriving in New Zealand by sea needs an NZeTA or a visa, regardless of nationality — including passengers whose nationality would otherwise be exempt.

Consular services

New Zealand missions in United Kingdom

The High Commission plays no part in an NZeTA request — everything is done online, so there is no appointment to book in London and no passport to send anywhere. It handles what the NZeTA does not cover: work visas, student visas, residence applications and consular assistance for New Zealanders living in Britain. If you are applying for a Working Holiday Visa, that is also an online process rather than a counter service.

FAQs

New Zealand eTA FAQs for UK citizens

The questions British passport holders ask most often about travelling to New Zealand.

No visa, but yes to an NZeTA. British citizens travel under New Zealand's visa waiver and can stay up to six months per visit. The NZeTA is a travel authorisation requested online before departure and checked by the airline at UK check-in. It cannot be obtained on arrival in Auckland.

Up to six months in a twelve-month period, which is double the 90 days granted to every other visa waiver nationality. It is the most generous visitor allowance New Zealand offers, and it is the reason extended trips and long family stays are so much more practical on a British passport.

The cost is the government request fee plus the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, currently NZD 100, both charged together. The pricing panel on this page shows the live all-in figure for British passport holders including our service fee, so there is nothing further to pay at the border.

Yes. It lasts two years from approval and covers unlimited entries in that time, as long as your passport stays valid. The six-month allowance is a limit on how long you spend in New Zealand, not on how many times you arrive — but leaving and returning does not restart the six-month clock.

No. The visitor category covers tourism, family visits, business meetings and conferences. British citizens aged 18 to 35 are eligible for the Working Holiday Scheme, which grants up to 23 months with the right to work, but that is a separate visa applied for before travel. It cannot be converted from an NZeTA after arrival.

Not in the same way. The six-month allowance is specific to British citizens. BN(O), British Overseas Territories Citizen, British Overseas Citizen, British Subject and British Protected Person passports each carry different entitlements, and some are not covered by the visa waiver at all. Check the exact wording in your passport before booking, and contact us if you are unsure which category applies.

British citizens are on the full visa waiver list, so transit through Auckland is covered by the same NZeTA you would use for a visit. You do not need anything additional, and unlike transit-waiver nationalities you are free to leave the airport and enter the country if your connection allows.

For New Zealand, yes — the requirement is three months of validity beyond your departure date from the country. But an NZeTA lasts two years and is tied to that passport number, so requesting one on a passport with eight months left means paying again after renewal. It is usually worth renewing first if you are close.
