Overview
Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in the world, with a population of around forty thousand, and it maintains an outsized financial sector with genuine links to the City of London. The number of Liechtenstein passport holders travelling to Britain in any year is small in absolute terms, but the relationship is real — private banking, wealth management and a steady flow of students to British universities and boarding schools.
Liechtenstein is not in the European Union but is a member of the European Economic Area, and its citizens enjoyed the same free movement to Britain that EU nationals did until Brexit ended it. From April 2025 the Electronic Travel Authorisation was extended to European nationalities including Liechtenstein. It is not a visa, and Liechtenstein remains firmly in the non-visa category.
The practical shape of a Liechtenstein trip to Britain is defined by geography. The principality has no airport of its own, so every journey starts with a short drive or train ride to Zurich, or occasionally to St Gallen-Altenrhein or Friedrichshafen. The ETA requirement is entirely unaffected by that — it attaches to you and your passport rather than to a departure point, so a Liechtenstein citizen flying out of Zurich needs exactly the same authorisation as one flying from anywhere else.

Liechtenstein is a non-visa national country for UK purposes, so its citizens travel to Britain as visitors for tourism, family visits, business, conferences or short courses without any consular application. The ETA precedes that permission and does not reduce it — the six months Liechtenstein visitors have always been allowed is unchanged.
Every traveller needs their own, at any age. Children and infants need an ETA linked to their own passport and cannot be added to a parent's application. Given how many Liechtenstein families send children to British boarding schools, it is worth noting that a school term of more than six months requires a Student visa rather than an ETA.
Exemptions apply as they do elsewhere in Europe. Liechtenstein citizens holding a UK visa, settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme — which was extended to EEA nationals — or indefinite leave to remain do not need an ETA. Dual nationals travelling on a British or Irish passport need nothing at all. Swiss dual nationality is common in Liechtenstein, but it makes no practical difference here, since Swiss citizens follow the same ETA rules.
Eligibility follows citizenship rather than residence, which is worth stating in a country where a large share of the workforce commutes in daily from Switzerland and Austria. A cross-border worker employed in Vaduz on an Austrian or Swiss passport follows that nationality's rules, and any non-EEA passport holder resident in Liechtenstein may need a Standard Visitor visa rather than an ETA.
Stay & validity
An approved ETA lasts two years from the date it is granted, or until your Liechtenstein passport expires, whichever comes first. Within that window there is no limit on entries, and each visit can last up to six months. For the business travellers who make up a large share of Liechtenstein's traffic to London, one application covering two years is a meaningful convenience.
The passport-expiry rule is the one to check first. The ETA is bound to the passport number you enter and ends when that document does. Liechtenstein passports are issued for ten years for adults and shorter periods for children, so a family applying together may find the children's authorisations expiring well before the parents'. Renewal does not transfer the ETA and there is no refund.
Britain does not require six months of onward passport validity, only that the passport covers your stay. This is more relaxed than the rule Schengen applies to third-country nationals, which Liechtenstein travellers are familiar with from the other direction.
Six months per visit is the maximum for a single entry rather than an annual allowance. The group for whom this matters most is students. A short summer course or language programme finishing within six months is covered by an ETA; a full academic year at a British school or university is not, and requires a Student visa applied for in advance from Liechtenstein.

Applications from Liechtenstein are decided automatically in almost all cases, and most applicants receive approval within minutes. The Home Office asks travellers to allow up to three working days, and a small number are referred for manual review, usually where a photograph fails the automated check.
Apply at least a week before travelling. The buffer exists so that a mistyped passport number or a rejected photograph can be corrected without a second payment. Business travellers who fly at short notice should obtain an ETA proactively — it lasts two years, so there is no disadvantage to holding one before a trip is booked.
Because Liechtenstein has no airport, most journeys begin at Zurich, which means an hour or more of travel before check-in even starts. A problem discovered at the airport is therefore a long way from home and impossible to resolve on the day. That is a stronger argument for early application here than in most countries.
On arrival
An approved ETA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land — and your nationality is one of those that can use the automated gates.
Your nationality is eligible to use the automated gates at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh and most other UK ports, alongside British and Irish citizens. The gate reads your biometric passport chip and checks your ETA against it electronically.
Children aged 10 or 11 can use the gates when accompanied by an adult using them at the same time. Younger children must be seen at a staffed desk, so families with under-tens should join the officer queue together.
The gates do not stamp passports. Your arrival is recorded digitally, and your six-month permission runs from that date. Keep your boarding pass and booking confirmations if you need to evidence your arrival date later.
The gates refer a proportion of passengers to Border Force at random or where the chip does not read cleanly. This is routine, is not a sign of a problem with your ETA, and usually adds only a few minutes.
Getting there
Liechtenstein has no airport of its own, and Zurich is the effective gateway — roughly an hour and a quarter away by road or rail, with several daily services to London and a wide British network. St Gallen-Altenrhein and Friedrichshafen are closer but offer far less choice, and both generally require a connection.
Best time to go
Liechtenstein sits in an Alpine valley with a continental climate, and the contrast with Britain's maritime one is marked. British winters are far milder and almost never bring lasting snow at low altitude, while British summers are cooler and much wetter than a Rhine valley July. The compensating attraction is the long northern evening — daylight in Scotland in June runs past ten at night.
May, June and September offer the best combination of weather and value. All three sit outside the July and August peak, when British prices and crowds are at their highest, and September benefits from the end of the British school holidays while the weather in the south often holds into October.
The Alpine winter sports season gives Liechtenstein travellers a counter-cyclical opportunity that is easy to overlook. February and March are quiet and inexpensive in Britain — an excellent time for a London city break, with cheap hotels and uncrowded museums and theatres. The short daylight matters little for an urban trip.
One practical note. Britain is one hour behind Liechtenstein year-round, with both changing clocks on the same dates. Because every journey begins with a transfer to Zurich, build the ground leg into your planning: allow at least two hours from Vaduz to the check-in desk, more in winter when the roads over the passes can be slow.
Avoid these
Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Liechtenstein — we check for every one of them before submitting.
The ETA follows your nationality and your passport, not your departure airport. A Liechtenstein citizen flying out of Zurich, Friedrichshafen or anywhere else needs the same authorisation. Because almost every journey starts in another country, this confusion is more common here than in most markets.
A large share of Liechtenstein's workforce commutes in daily from Switzerland and Austria. Eligibility follows the passport, not the place of work. Austrian and Swiss passport holders follow their own country's rules, and any non-EEA passport holder resident in Liechtenstein may need a Standard Visitor visa rather than an ETA.
Liechtenstein families send a notable number of children to British boarding schools. The ETA permits study of up to six months only. A full academic year requires a Student visa applied for in advance, and it cannot be arranged from within the UK after arriving on an ETA.
An identity card is not accepted for travel to Britain. You need a passport, and the ETA is linked to that passport number. The exception is for Liechtenstein citizens with EU Settlement Scheme status, who may still use an identity card and need no ETA at all.
The ETA is bound to a passport number and dies with that document. Renewal voids it with no transfer and no refund. Check the expiry date before applying, and check children's passports separately since they run for shorter periods than adults'.
With no airport in the country, every journey involves an hour or more of ground travel before check-in. A problem discovered at Zurich cannot be resolved from there, and there is no going home to fix it. Applying a week ahead is more important in Liechtenstein than in countries with a local airport.
Passport number mistyped
By far the most common problem. The authorisation attaches to the number you enter, so a single wrong character produces an ETA that does not exist as far as the airline's check is concerned.
An undeclared conviction or refusal
The Home Office asks about criminal convictions and previous immigration refusals or removals. History found later is treated far more seriously than the original matter would have been if declared.
A photograph that fails the check
Shadows across the face, glasses, a patterned background or a cropped chin all cause the automated check to reject an image, which turns a routine approval into a manual review.
Conditions
These conditions are set by the UK Home Office and do not vary by nationality. The passport-linking rule in particular catches out a great many otherwise well-planned trips.
Your authorisation is held digitally against the passport number you enter. There is nothing placed in your passport and nothing to print for the border. If you renew or replace that passport, the ETA does not transfer — you must apply for a new one on the new document.
Every person travelling needs their own ETA, including babies and children. A child cannot be added to a parent's application, and each traveller needs their own valid passport to apply against.
