US ESTA for Belgian Citizens

Belgians have entered the United States visa-free since 1991, as long as an ESTA is approved before they leave Zaventem. It is tied to the passport, not the eID, and usually runs for two years of repeat visits.

Overview

The US ESTA for Belgian citizens

Belgium sends a steady and varied stream of travellers across the Atlantic: Antwerp diamond dealers bound for 47th Street, pharmaceutical and chemical executives heading to New Jersey and Houston, EU and NATO staff on working visits to Washington, and families from Ghent, Liège and Namur who have saved up for New York or a Florida fortnight. Whatever the reason, the paperwork starts in the same place.

Belgian citizens have travelled to the United States without a visa since the country entered the Visa Waiver Program in 1991. The condition is an approved ESTA, an electronic authorisation issued by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and stored against the passport number. Brussels Airlines, United and Delta verify it at Zaventem before check-in is completed, as do the carriers at Schiphol and Paris that many Belgians use.

A handful of Belgian particularities deserve attention before you start typing. The adult passport lasts seven years, not ten. Married Belgians keep their birth name in law, which catches out people who book tickets under a spouse's surname. And a country that hosts so many international institutions and aid organisations has more than its share of citizens whose past postings rule out visa-free travel.

Eligibility

Do Belgian citizens need an ESTA for the USA?

Yes, Belgians need an ESTA for every visa-free journey to the United States, by air, by sea or overland from Canada or Mexico. The purpose can be tourism, business, medical treatment or transit. A Belgian changing planes in Newark on the way to Cancún or Lima needs one just as much as someone staying for a month.

The Belgian eID, which works for travel across the European Union and for almost every dealing with the state at home, has no role here. Only a passport with an electronic chip is accepted, and many Belgians who have never needed one must apply at their commune or gemeente first. Allow for that step in your planning, because the ESTA cannot be requested until the passport number exists.

Belgium's position as host to the EU institutions, NATO and a dense cluster of humanitarian organisations creates a specific eligibility issue. Anyone who has been in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Somalia, Sudan or North Korea on or after 1 March 2011, or in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, is generally excluded from the programme. The exceptions are narrow, limited to diplomatic or military service on behalf of a programme country, so aid workers, journalists and consultants should expect to need a visa.

Each traveller applies individually. Belgian children have their own five-year passports, and a Kids-ID is no substitute, so a baby flying to Orlando needs both a passport and an ESTA in its own name. Purposes outside the waiver, such as a paid job, a university exchange earning credits or an assignment for RTBF, VRT or a newspaper, require a visa instead.

What your ESTA allows

  • Tourism, holidays and visiting family or friends
  • Business visits — meetings, conferences, conventions and contract negotiation
  • Medical treatment
  • Short recreational courses that carry no credit towards a degree
  • Transit through the United States on the way to another country
  • Unpaid participation in amateur sporting, musical or social events

What it does not cover

  • Employment of any kind for a US employer
  • Study for academic credit — this needs a student visa
  • Work as foreign press, radio, film or other information media
  • Stays longer than 90 days, or extending a stay from inside the country
  • Permanent residence in the United States
  • Paid performances before a paying audience

Stay & validity

How long can Belgian citizens stay in the USA?

The standard ESTA lasts two years, but Belgian adults should look closely at their passport first. Belgium issues adult passports for seven years and children's for five, shorter than most neighbouring countries, and the authorisation dies with the passport. A traveller whose passport has ten months left gets ten months of ESTA, not twenty-four.

Inside the validity period you may enter repeatedly, and each stay can run to 90 days. A consultant flying to Boston four times a year and taking the family to California in July can do all of it on one authorisation. What you cannot do is extend a stay from within the United States or switch to a different immigration status once admitted.

Belgians who combine an American trip with Mexico, Canada or a Caribbean island should count carefully. Those side trips are included in the 90 days of the visit they interrupt. Flying from Miami to the Bahamas for a week and back again continues the original stay; it does not open a new one.

Certain changes cancel an ESTA before its end date: a replacement passport, a legal change of name or gender, a new citizenship, or a change in any answer to the eligibility questions. Belgians who acquire a second nationality, or who visit one of the restricted countries after approval, need to reassess whether they still qualify at all.

Requirements

US ESTA requirements for Belgian citizens

Everything Belgian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

A biometric e-passport from a Visa Waiver Program country, carrying the chip symbol on its cover

A valid email address, which is where the decision is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling

A credit or debit card to pay the government ESTA charge and our service fee together

Your home address, phone number and an emergency contact

Employer details and, if you have them, the address of where you are staying in the United States

Specific to Belgian passport holders

  • A Belgian passport bearing the chip symbol, valid for the whole of your stay; the eID and the Kids-ID are not travel documents for the United States
  • Your name as recorded in the machine-readable zone, where accents and cedillas disappear, so Hélène becomes HELENE and François becomes FRANCOIS
  • Surnames with particles kept whole and in passport order, whether Van Den Broeck, De Smet or Vandenberghe, and D'Hondt without its apostrophe
  • Your legal birth name, which in Belgium does not change on marriage, and a flight ticket booked in exactly the same name
  • The passport number from the photo page, two letters followed by six digits on current Belgian passports
  • Your place of birth in the form your passport prints it, whether that reads Liège or Luik, Antwerpen or Anvers
  • A Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card; a bank card that carries only Bancontact cannot make this kind of card payment
  • Home address with postcode, a phone number beginning +32 and an emergency contact
  • A full record of other nationalities, past and present, and of any travel to the restricted countries since March 2011
  • One application per person, with each child entered from the child's own passport

Simple process

How Belgian citizens apply for a US ESTA

Four steps, entirely online, with our team checking every field before anything reaches U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Step 1

Complete the online form

Enter your passport details exactly as printed, your contact and employment information, and answer the eligibility questions. Most applicants finish in about fifteen minutes.

About 15 minutes
Step 2

We review every field

Our team checks your passport number, name spelling, dates and declarations against CBP requirements before anything is submitted.

Error detection included
Step 3

We submit to CBP

Your application goes to U.S. Customs and Border Protection with the government charge paid, and we track its status until a decision is issued.

Usually within 72 hours
Step 4

Your ESTA arrives by email

There is nothing to stick in your passport. The authorisation is held electronically against your passport number, and the airline verifies it when you check in.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Most Belgian applicants have a decision within hours. CBP's guidance is to apply no later than 72 hours before the flight, since some applications are held as pending while further checks run. If you also need a first passport from the town hall, deal with that well in advance and submit the ESTA in the week the passport arrives.

School holidays now differ between the language communities, and that affects timing. French-speaking schools start their summer break in early July and return in late August, with two-week breaks in autumn and at Carnival, while Flemish schools keep the traditional July and August. If relatives from both sides of the language border are travelling together, apply for everyone at once, well ahead of whichever holiday comes first.

A refusal is not the end of the trip, but it changes the timetable considerably. The alternative is a B-1/B-2 visa, applied for at the embassy on the Boulevard du Régent in Brussels with an interview in person. Anyone with a known complication, such as an earlier American visa refusal or a posting to Baghdad, should start months ahead and not pin their hopes on a last-minute ESTA.

On arrival

What Belgian citizens can expect at the US border

An approved ESTA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

You are inspected by a CBP officer

Visa Waiver travellers are seen by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the first American airport they land at, even when connecting onward. The officer takes a photograph and, for most adults, fingerprints.

Your admission is recorded electronically

There is no paper form to fill in on the aircraft. Your arrival record, the I-94, is created digitally and shows the date by which you must leave. You can look it up online afterwards.

Have your plans ready to describe

Expect to be asked where you are staying, for how long and what you do for a living. A return ticket and the address of your first night are usually all it takes.

Allow time at the first airport

Queues at the busiest gateways can run past an hour at peak arrival times. If you are connecting to a domestic flight, leave a generous margin, since you also reclaim and recheck your bags.

Getting there

Flying to the USA from Belgium

Brussels Airport at Zaventem has nonstop flights to the main East Coast gateways and to Chicago and Atlanta, operated by Brussels Airlines, United and Delta. For the West Coast, Florida and Texas, Belgians usually connect through a European hub or an American one. Amsterdam is under two hours from Antwerp by train, Paris Charles de Gaulle has a direct high-speed link from Brussels-Midi, and Frankfurt and London are short hops away.

  • Brussels (BRU) — New York JFK with Brussels Airlines and Delta
  • Brussels — Newark with United
  • Brussels — Washington Dulles with United and Brussels Airlines
  • Brussels — Chicago O'Hare with United and Atlanta with Delta, not all of them year-round

Best time to go

When to travel from Belgium

Belgian weather is rarely extreme, and that shapes what Belgians look for in America: guaranteed sun in Florida and California, real winter in New York, real heat in the desert. The best all-round months for the cities of the East Coast are May, June, September and October, when temperatures are comfortable and hotel rates sit below the summer and December peaks.

Families in French-speaking Belgium gained a useful advantage when the school calendar was reformed. The two-week autumn break in late October and early November is long enough for a proper road trip through California or the Southwest at a time when American children are in school and the parks have emptied. Flemish families, with one week at that time, tend to choose New York.

July and August remain the main season for long holidays, and the national holiday on 21 July often marks the start of the exodus. Those are also the busiest months in the national parks and the hottest in Florida, where the hurricane season runs from June to November. Book park lodging and internal flights early, and avoid the days around the Fourth of July if you dislike crowds.

Brussels is six hours ahead of New York and nine ahead of Los Angeles. Flights from Zaventem leave in the late morning and arrive in the early afternoon, eastern time, giving you half a day to adjust. If you connect through Newark, Washington or Chicago to reach another city, that first airport is where immigration takes place, so leave a comfortable gap before the onward flight.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Belgian citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Belgium — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Counting on ten years when the passport lasts seven

Belgians who compare notes with French or Dutch friends often assume a ten-year passport. The Belgian adult passport is valid for seven, and it is common to discover at the last minute that it expires within the year. An ESTA cannot outlive the passport, so a late application can buy very little validity.

Booking the ticket in a married name

Belgian law keeps everyone in their birth name for life, and that is the name in the passport. Travellers who go by a spouse's surname day to day sometimes book flights or fill in the ESTA under it. The airline then holds a booking, a passport and an authorisation that do not agree.

Forgetting a work trip to a restricted country

A short mission to Erbil for an NGO, a reporting trip to Libya or a consultancy visit to Khartoum years ago still counts if it took place on or after 1 March 2011. Brussels-based professionals overlook these because they were work, not holidays. Declare them and apply for a visa in good time.

Arriving at Zaventem with an eID or a Kids-ID

Belgians use identity cards for nearly all European travel, and every year some families reach the check-in desk for an American flight with cards and no passports. Without a passport there can be no ESTA and no boarding. Children need passports too, which take several working days to issue.

Travel to a restricted country

Anyone who has been in Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen on or after 1 March 2011, or in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, is generally not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program and needs a visa instead.

A previous visa refusal or overstay

An earlier refusal of a US visa, a denied entry or a past overstay must be declared. Each one commonly leads to an ESTA being refused and the traveller being directed to apply for a visa.

Passport details that do not match

A single wrong character in the passport number, or an expiry date typed in the wrong order, produces an authorisation the airline cannot find at check-in.

Conditions

ESTA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set under the Visa Waiver Program and do not vary by nationality. The 90-day limit and the passport-linking rule catch out a great many otherwise well-planned trips.

The ESTA is linked to one passport

Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you enter. If you renew or replace that passport, change your name or change citizenship, the ESTA no longer applies and you need a new one.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling under the Visa Waiver Program needs their own ESTA, including babies and children, each linked to that traveller's own e-passport.

Valid for two years, or until your passport expires

An approved ESTA generally lasts two years from the date of authorisation, or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever comes first.

Multiple entries, up to 90 days per visit

Within its validity you can make repeated trips. Each stay can be up to 90 days, and time spent in Canada, Mexico or the nearby Caribbean islands during a trip counts towards those 90 days.

No extensions and no change of status

A Visa Waiver stay cannot be extended and cannot be converted into another immigration status from inside the United States. Anyone who needs longer must apply for a visa before travelling.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An ESTA lets you board a carrier bound for the United States. Admission is decided by a CBP officer at the port of entry, who can ask about your plans, your funds and your ties to home.

Consular services

US missions in Belgium

Brussels hosts three American missions, to Belgium, to the European Union and to NATO, but only the bilateral embassy on the Boulevard du Régent has a consular section. ESTA applicants need none of them, because the authorisation is handled online from start to finish. The embassy matters when a visa is required, either after a refusal or for work, study and press assignments.

FAQs

US ESTA FAQs for Belgian citizens

The questions Belgian passport holders ask most often about travelling to the United States.

No, Belgians do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days, provided they hold an approved ESTA before departure. Belgium joined the Visa Waiver Program in 1991. The ESTA is applied for online, attached electronically to your passport and checked by the airline when you check in.

No. An ESTA can only be linked to a biometric passport. The eID is valid for travel inside the European Union and some neighbouring states but is not accepted for entry to the United States. If you have no passport, request one from your commune or gemeente before applying.

Only if the passport has less than two years left. An ESTA normally lasts two years but always ends when the passport does. With a new seven-year passport you receive the full term; with one close to expiry you receive only the remaining months and will need to apply again afterwards.

The name in your passport, which for Belgian citizens is the birth name. Marriage does not change a surname under Belgian law. Enter the surname exactly as shown in the machine-readable lines of the passport and make sure your airline reservation is in that name too.

Generally not, if you were in Iraq on or after 1 March 2011. The exceptions cover diplomatic or military service for a Visa Waiver country, and humanitarian work does not fall within them. You would normally apply for a B-1/B-2 visa at the US Embassy in Brussels and explain the purpose of the earlier trip.

Yes. Brussels Airport has nonstop services to New York, Newark, Washington and Chicago, and Delta also flies to Atlanta. For other American cities most Belgians change planes at one of those gateways or travel via Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt or London. The flight to New York takes roughly eight and a half hours.

At least 72 hours before departure, which is CBP's own recommendation, and ideally as soon as the trip is booked. Most decisions arrive quickly, but a pending status can last up to three days. Applying early also leaves time to seek a visa if the ESTA is refused.

Yes, a second Moroccan nationality does not affect eligibility. The dual-nationality exclusion applies only to nationals of Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Syria and Cuba. Apply with your Belgian passport, declare the Moroccan citizenship where the form asks, and travel on the Belgian passport.
