Important for Hungarian citizens

Hungarian applications submitted from 30 September 2025 again receive two-year, multiple-entry ESTAs; the earlier one-year, single-use restriction has been lifted. Hungarian citizens who were born outside Hungary should check their eligibility carefully before booking.

Overview

The US ESTA for Hungarian citizens

Hungary's position in the Visa Waiver Program has had more twists than most. The country was designated in 2008, and for years a Hungarian ESTA worked like anyone else's. Then came a period in which approvals for Hungarian passports were cut to a single trip within one year. That restriction has now been lifted: applications made from 30 September 2025 onwards are once more granted for two years with multiple entries.

The practical effect is that a Hungarian visiting cousins in Cleveland, attending a congress in Washington or touring California can again return on the same authorisation without paying and applying afresh for every journey. The ESTA itself is issued online by U.S. Customs and Border Protection and verified by the airline before you leave Ferihegy, Vienna or wherever your long-haul flight begins.

A few matters still deserve particular attention from Hungarian applicants. Place of birth is one, since citizens born beyond the country's borders are advised to confirm that they qualify. Name order, double accents and married names ending in -né are others. This page works through them along with the usual questions about timing and stay length.

Eligibility

Do Hungarian citizens need an ESTA for the USA?

Yes. Hungarian citizens flying, sailing or driving into the United States without a visa must have an approved ESTA. It makes no difference whether the visit is a month-long tour or a short layover in New York en route to the Dominican Republic, and the land borders with Canada and Mexico have been included since 2022.

The waiver is open to holders of a Hungarian citizen's biometric passport, but Hungarian citizens who were born outside Hungary should check their eligibility with special care. If you acquired citizenship later in life, or were born abroad to Hungarian parents, establish where you stand before buying non-refundable tickets, and be ready to apply for a visitor visa in Budapest if the waiver turns out not to be available to you.

The exclusions that apply to every member country apply here too. Hungarians who have been in Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, Sudan or North Korea since 1 March 2011, or in Cuba since 12 January 2021, need a visa instead, as do dual nationals of Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sudan, North Korea or Cuba.

Then there is the purpose of the journey. Sightseeing, visiting relatives, negotiating a deal or receiving treatment are permitted. Paid work is not, including informal childcare or restaurant shifts, and Hungarian students heading to an American campus for credit need a student visa however short the course.

What your ESTA allows

  • Tourism, holidays and visiting family or friends
  • Business visits — meetings, conferences, conventions and contract negotiation
  • Medical treatment
  • Short recreational courses that carry no credit towards a degree
  • Transit through the United States on the way to another country
  • Unpaid participation in amateur sporting, musical or social events

What it does not cover

  • Employment of any kind for a US employer
  • Study for academic credit — this needs a student visa
  • Work as foreign press, radio, film or other information media
  • Stays longer than 90 days, or extending a stay from inside the country
  • Permanent residence in the United States
  • Paid performances before a paying audience

Stay & validity

How long can Hungarian citizens stay in the USA?

An ESTA issued to a Hungarian citizen on an application made from 30 September 2025 is valid for two years and for multiple entries, each of up to 90 days. If you still hold an older approval granted under the previous arrangement, treat it according to the terms you were given at the time and apply anew when you next plan to travel.

The authorisation never outlasts the passport. Hungarian adults may hold either a five-year or a ten-year útlevél, while children's passports are issued for shorter periods, so a family can easily find that one member's ESTA lapses a year before the others'. Compare the expiry dates before you submit a group application.

Ninety days means ninety consecutive calendar days from admission, and excursions to neighbouring countries do not stop the clock. A Hungarian who lands in Miami, takes a week's cruise to the Bahamas and returns to Florida has spent that week from the same allowance. Longer stays cannot be arranged on arrival; they require a visa obtained in advance.

Requirements

US ESTA requirements for Hungarian citizens

Everything Hungarian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

A biometric e-passport from a Visa Waiver Program country, carrying the chip symbol on its cover

A valid email address, which is where the decision is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling

A credit or debit card to pay the government ESTA charge and our service fee together

Your home address, phone number and an emergency contact

Employer details and, if you have them, the address of where you are staying in the United States

Specific to Hungarian passport holders

  • A Hungarian biometric passport with the chip symbol on the cover; the személyi igazolvány card is valid for the Schengen area but not for boarding a flight to America
  • A temporary or emergency travel document only if it is electronic, which should be confirmed with the issuing office or consulate
  • Family name in the surname box and given names in the first-name box, regardless of the Hungarian habit of writing Nagy Péter in that order
  • Spelling taken from the machine-readable zone, where á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü and ű are shown in unaccented form
  • A married name in exactly the form the passport carries, whether that is a husband's name with -né, a hyphenated double surname or your birth name
  • Your country and city of birth as printed, with particular care if you were born outside Hungary
  • Any other nationality you hold now or held in the past
  • A debit or credit card enabled for international online payments, with the cost taken from the live prices shown on this page
  • A working email address for the decision, ideally not one tied to an employer's server

Simple process

How Hungarian citizens apply for a US ESTA

Four steps, entirely online, with our team checking every field before anything reaches U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Step 1

Complete the online form

Enter your passport details exactly as printed, your contact and employment information, and answer the eligibility questions. Most applicants finish in about fifteen minutes.

About 15 minutes
Step 2

We review every field

Our team checks your passport number, name spelling, dates and declarations against CBP requirements before anything is submitted.

Error detection included
Step 3

We submit to CBP

Your application goes to U.S. Customs and Border Protection with the government charge paid, and we track its status until a decision is issued.

Usually within 72 hours
Step 4

Your ESTA arrives by email

There is nothing to stick in your passport. The authorisation is held electronically against your passport number, and the airline verifies it when you check in.

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Decisions on Hungarian applications are mostly returned within hours. Even so, the CBP guideline of applying at least 72 hours before departure is worth following to the letter, and Hungarians born abroad would be wise to allow considerably longer, so that a visa appointment remains possible if the answer is no.

Because the two-year, multiple-entry approval has returned, there is again a real advantage in applying early. A Hungarian who obtains an ESTA while planning next summer's trip can use the same one for a business visit in between, something that was impossible while each approval covered a single journey.

A refused applicant is referred to the visa route: an online form followed by an interview at the embassy on Szabadság tér in Budapest. Interview waits rise ahead of the summer, so start early.

On arrival

What Hungarian citizens can expect at the US border

An approved ESTA gets you on the plane. This is what happens once you land, and how to make the arrival as quick as possible.

You are inspected by a CBP officer

Visa Waiver travellers are seen by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the first American airport they land at, even when connecting onward. The officer takes a photograph and, for most adults, fingerprints.

Your admission is recorded electronically

There is no paper form to fill in on the aircraft. Your arrival record, the I-94, is created digitally and shows the date by which you must leave. You can look it up online afterwards.

Have your plans ready to describe

Expect to be asked where you are staying, for how long and what you do for a living. A return ticket and the address of your first night are usually all it takes.

Allow time at the first airport

Queues at the busiest gateways can run past an hour at peak arrival times. If you are connecting to a domestic flight, leave a generous margin, since you also reclaim and recheck your bags.

Getting there

Flying to the USA from Hungary

Budapest's transatlantic links have come and gone over the years, so most Hungarians plan on one change of aircraft. Frankfurt and Munich with Lufthansa, Amsterdam with KLM, Paris with Air France, London with British Airways and Warsaw with LOT are the standard choices, and seasonal nonstops to the East Coast have appeared in some summer timetables. From Győr and Sopron, Vienna airport is closer than Ferihegy and has Austrian Airlines' American network.

  • Budapest Liszt Ferenc (BUD) — one stop via Frankfurt or Munich with Lufthansa to New York, Chicago, Washington, Miami and the West Coast
  • Budapest — one stop via Amsterdam, Paris or London for Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles and Orlando
  • Budapest — one stop via Warsaw with LOT to New York, Newark and Chicago
  • Western Hungary — by road or rail to Vienna for Austrian Airlines nonstops to New York, Washington and Chicago

Best time to go

When to travel from Hungary

The Hungarian school year ends in mid-June and resumes at the start of September, giving families about eleven weeks that overlap with the whole of the American summer holiday. Flights and hotels are at their dearest then.

Tavaszi szünet around Easter is a pleasant time for Washington, New York and the southern states, with mild temperatures and trees in blossom. Őszi szünet, built around the 23 October holiday and All Saints' Day, falls in the tail end of the Atlantic hurricane season; Florida is usually fine by then, but flexible bookings are prudent.

Long weekends created by 15 March and 20 August tempt some Hungarians into short trips, but four or five days is thin for a destination six time zones away. A week is the realistic minimum for New York and ten days for anything involving the West Coast, where the difference from Budapest is nine hours.

Winter has its attractions for a nation that knows cold. Budapest in January is grey and often below freezing, while southern Florida, Arizona and Hawaii are in their best season.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Hungarian citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Hungary — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Not checking eligibility when born abroad

Hungarian citizens whose birthplace lies outside Hungary are specifically advised to verify that they qualify. Booking first and checking afterwards is the costly way round. If there is any doubt, leave time for a visa application at Szabadság tér.

Reversing the name fields

In Hungarian the family name comes first, and people fill in foreign forms on autopilot. Put Szabó where the form asks for a family name and Katalin where it asks for a first name, exactly as the passport's own labelled fields do.

Confusing ö with ő and u with ű

None of the accented vowels should be typed at all. The machine-readable lines at the bottom of the data page give the version to use, and copying those avoids arguments over how Gyöngyösi or Szűcs ought to be simplified.

Relying on an approval from the restricted period

An ESTA granted while Hungarian approvals were limited to a single use may not cover the trip you are now planning. Look at the status and conditions of what you hold, and submit a new application if it has been used or has run out.

Travel to a restricted country

Anyone who has been in Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia or Yemen on or after 1 March 2011, or in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, is generally not eligible for the Visa Waiver Program and needs a visa instead.

A previous visa refusal or overstay

An earlier refusal of a US visa, a denied entry or a past overstay must be declared. Each one commonly leads to an ESTA being refused and the traveller being directed to apply for a visa.

Passport details that do not match

A single wrong character in the passport number, or an expiry date typed in the wrong order, produces an authorisation the airline cannot find at check-in.

Conditions

ESTA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set under the Visa Waiver Program and do not vary by nationality. The 90-day limit and the passport-linking rule catch out a great many otherwise well-planned trips.

The ESTA is linked to one passport

Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you enter. If you renew or replace that passport, change your name or change citizenship, the ESTA no longer applies and you need a new one.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling under the Visa Waiver Program needs their own ESTA, including babies and children, each linked to that traveller's own e-passport.

Valid for two years, or until your passport expires

An approved ESTA generally lasts two years from the date of authorisation, or until the passport it is linked to expires, whichever comes first.

Multiple entries, up to 90 days per visit

Within its validity you can make repeated trips. Each stay can be up to 90 days, and time spent in Canada, Mexico or the nearby Caribbean islands during a trip counts towards those 90 days.

No extensions and no change of status

A Visa Waiver stay cannot be extended and cannot be converted into another immigration status from inside the United States. Anyone who needs longer must apply for a visa before travelling.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An ESTA lets you board a carrier bound for the United States. Admission is decided by a CBP officer at the port of entry, who can ask about your plans, your funds and your ties to home.

Consular services

US missions in Hungary

Staff at the embassy in Budapest cannot grant, extend or correct an ESTA, because the system is operated online by CBP. Hungarians visit the embassy for visa interviews, which is the path for anyone ineligible for the waiver or travelling to work or study.

FAQs

US ESTA FAQs for Hungarian citizens

The questions Hungarian passport holders ask most often about travelling to the United States.

No, most Hungarian citizens do not need a visa for trips of up to 90 days. Hungary is a Visa Waiver Program country, so an approved ESTA is sufficient for tourism, business, medical treatment or transit. Citizens born outside Hungary should confirm their eligibility, and anyone ineligible needs a visa.

Yes. Applications submitted from 30 September 2025 once more receive two-year, multiple-entry authorisations. The earlier limitation to one year and a single use no longer applies to new applications, though the approval still ends if your passport expires sooner.

You should check your eligibility carefully before applying or booking travel. If it emerges that you cannot use the waiver, the alternative is a B-1/B-2 visitor visa through the embassy in Budapest, so build extra time into your plans.

The form asks for family name and first name in separate boxes. Enter each in the matching box, following the labelled fields on your passport, even though everyday Hungarian usage puts the family name at the front.

Nonstop service has been intermittent and seasonal, so check the current timetable. The dependable routings involve one change at Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Paris, London or Warsaw, or a departure from nearby Vienna.

No. Only a biometric passport is accepted, and the ESTA is linked to its number. The identity card is fine for a connecting flight inside the Schengen area but will not be accepted at the gate for the transatlantic leg.

Yes, each child must have one, whatever their age. Hungarian children's passports have shorter validity than adults', so their authorisations frequently expire first and may need renewing before a second family trip.

A refusal is not a ban on travel, but it does mean the waiver is closed to you for that trip. You would complete a visa application and attend an interview in Budapest, where a consular officer makes a separate decision.
