Important for Belizean citizens

Belize's long-haul options run almost entirely through the United States, which requires a US visa even for an airside transit — and that takes far longer to obtain than the Indian eVisa. Resolve the routing first; Panama City or Mexico City plus a European hub is the alternative.

Overview

The India eVisa for Belizean citizens

Belize is unusual in Central America: English-speaking, a Commonwealth member, and with a small East Indian community descended from indentured labourers and deportees who arrived from India in the 1850s and 1860s. Those roots are largely in Toledo and Corozal districts, and the community remains a distinct part of Belizean society.

Practically, though, the defining feature of a Belizean trip to India is connectivity. Belize City's long-haul options run almost entirely through the United States, which brings a US visa requirement that takes months rather than days.

Every Belizean citizen needs a visa granted before departure. There is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival. The eVisa is an electronic authorisation issued by the Government of India, linked to your passport number, with no stamp and no appointment. Belizean passport holders receive up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa.

Eligibility

Do Belizean citizens need a visa for India?

Yes. India extends visa-free entry only to Nepal and Bhutan, and Visa on Arrival only to Japanese, South Korean and Emirati nationals. Commonwealth membership makes no difference — Belizean citizens must hold an approved visa before boarding, and it will be checked at your first departure point.

Choose the category by purpose. Tourism, sightseeing, heritage travel and visiting relatives fall under the tourist eVisa. Business meetings, trade fairs and sourcing trips require the business eVisa. Hospital treatment requires the medical eVisa. Employment, journalism, academic research and long-term study are outside the eVisa scheme and need a regular visa from an Indian mission.

If you or a parent were born in India or previously held an Indian passport, you must declare it — India does not permit dual citizenship. For most Belizean East Indian families whose ancestors arrived in the nineteenth century, this does not apply and a standard eVisa is all that is needed.

Stay & validity

How long can Belizean citizens stay in India?

Belizean citizens are permitted up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows double entry, with its 30 days counted from your arrival date. The one-year and five-year versions are multiple-entry, and their validity begins on the date the Indian government grants the application.

Ninety days is ample for the kind of trip that justifies a 30-hour journey. The eVisa cannot be extended from inside India, so build the full plan before you submit.

Because transit arrangements can delay a departure on this route, consider a one-year multiple-entry visa rather than a 30-day one if your travel date is not firm.

The business eVisa allows up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window. The medical eVisa gives 60 days from first entry with triple entry.

Requirements

India eVisa requirements for Belizean citizens

Recent passport-style photograph — square format, plain white background, full face visible, no shadows and no headwear other than for religious reasons

A valid credit or debit card to pay the government fee and service charge

Your return or onward ticket details, or at minimum your intended departure date

The address where you will be staying for your first night in India

Specific to Belizean passport holders

  • A regular Belizean passport valid at least six months beyond your arrival date, with two or more blank pages
  • A US visa if your routing connects through the United States — this applies even to airside transits and is the usual constraint
  • Your full name exactly as printed on the passport, including all given names
  • A yellow-fever certificate if your routing transits Panama, Colombia or Brazil
  • A square digital photograph on a plain white background with your full face visible
  • A clear colour scan of the passport bio-data page
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international payments, as the fee is charged in USD
  • Your first night's address in India and your onward or return flight details

Processing times and when to apply

Standard processing takes 48 to 72 hours and express handling 24 to 48 hours. Both are business-day estimates, and Indian public holidays — numerous and often state-specific — extend them.

The Indian eVisa is unlikely to be your critical path. If your routing needs a US transit visa, that takes months and should be started first. Once the routing is settled, apply for the eVisa two to three weeks before departure.

Mandatory from October 2025

You also need the India e-Arrival Card

Separate from your eVisa, every foreign national entering India must complete the digital e-Arrival Card before boarding. It replaces the old paper disembarkation form and is required on every single visit, whatever visa you hold.

Getting there

Flying to India from Belize

Belize City's long-haul options run almost entirely through the United States. Panama City or Mexico City plus a European hub is the alternative for travellers without a US visa. Total journey times run 28 to 36 hours.

  • Belize City (BZE) — via Houston, Miami, Dallas or Atlanta — requires a US visa
  • Belize City (BZE) — Delhi or Mumbai via Panama City and then Madrid, Amsterdam or Istanbul
  • Belize City (BZE) — via Mexico City and then Madrid or Istanbul
  • The Panama City and Mexico City routings are the practical alternatives without a US visa
  • Note that a Panama transit may trigger India's yellow-fever certificate requirement

Best time to go

When to travel from Belize

October to March is India's dry season and the best window for the classic circuits, overlapping with the Belizean dry season and the December holiday period.

Diwali and Holi are observed within Belize's East Indian community and both fall inside India's good season, which makes them natural times to travel if the heritage connection is part of your reason for going.

Avoid the northern plains in May and June, when temperatures exceed 45°C. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November and can disrupt Belizean departures. India is 11.5 hours ahead of Belizean time.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Belizean citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Belize — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Booking a US-transit routing without a US visa

By far the most consequential error on this route. Belize City's long-haul options run almost entirely through the United States, and a US connection requires a US visa even if you never leave the airport. Your India eVisa is irrelevant to it, and a US visa can take months. Resolve the routing before you buy tickets — Panama City and Mexico City are the alternatives.

Assuming Commonwealth membership helps

It does not. Belize and India are both Commonwealth members, but that confers no visa advantage — Belizean citizens need an approved Indian visa before boarding exactly as any other nationality would.

Assuming the Indian visa is the long lead time

It is not. An Indian eVisa takes 24 to 72 hours; a US transit visa can take months. If your routing needs one, that is the critical path.

Not declaring a parent's Indian birth or passport

Descent from the nineteenth-century East Indian migration creates no complication. But if you or a parent were born in India or held an Indian passport, that must be declared, and renunciation documentation is generally required — India does not recognise dual citizenship.

Travelling during hurricane season without margin

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November. On a 30-hour itinerary with multiple connections, a disrupted Belizean departure cascades badly. Build in margin, or travel between December and May.

Photo rejected on technical grounds

By far the most common cause of delay. The photograph must be square, on a plain white background, with your full face visible and no shadow behind your head. Cropped selfies and phone photos taken against a cream wall are routinely bounced back.

Passport scan unreadable

Glare across the machine-readable zone, a cut-off corner, or a scan where the passport number is blurred will stall the application. Photograph the page flat, in daylight, with no flash.

Applying too close to departure

The eVisa must be granted before you fly, and airlines check it at the gate. Applications submitted the night before a flight leave no room for a document re-upload.

Conditions

India eVisa rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by the Government of India and do not vary by nationality. They are worth reading before you book, because two of them — the port-of-entry rule and the restricted-areas rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

Your passport must be valid for six months

Validity is measured from your date of arrival in India, not from the date you apply. You also need at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

Enter through a designated eVisa port only

The India eVisa is accepted at India's designated eVisa airports and authorised seaports. It cannot be used to cross a land border, so overland arrivals from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh or Pakistan need a different visa.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own eVisa and their own passport, including infants and children. Children cannot be added to a parent's application.

Restricted and Protected Areas need a separate permit

An eVisa does not grant access to Protected Areas, Restricted Areas or Cantonment Areas. Parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep require a Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit in addition to your visa.

The eVisa is non-extendable and non-convertible

You cannot extend an eVisa from inside India or convert it into another visa category. If your plans change, you must leave and apply again.

Standard passports only

Diplomatic, official and service passports are not eligible for the eVisa route, and neither are international travel documents or refugee travel documents.

Consular services

Indian missions in Belize

Belize may be served under concurrent accreditation by an Indian mission in the region rather than by a resident post. That has no bearing on your eVisa, which is entirely online — and it is precisely why the eVisa is the practical route. Confirm coverage if you need a student, employment or research visa, or an OCI card.

FAQs

India visa FAQs for Belizean citizens

The questions Belizean passport holders ask most often about applying for an Indian eVisa.

Almost certainly, unless you route around it. Belize City's long-haul options run almost entirely through the United States, and a US connection requires a US visa even if you never leave the airport. Your India eVisa has no bearing on it, and a US visa can take months. Panama City or Mexico City plus a European hub is the alternative.

No. Belize and India are both Commonwealth members, but that confers no visa advantage. Belizean citizens need an approved Indian visa granted before departure, exactly as any other nationality would, and there is no visa-free or visa-on-arrival facility.

The transit visa, without question. An Indian eVisa takes 24 to 72 hours; a US visa can take months. If your routing requires one, that is the critical path. Sort the routing first, then apply for the Indian eVisa two to three weeks before departure.

No. Descent from the nineteenth-century East Indian migration creates no complication — a standard eVisa is what you need. The question only arises if you or a parent were born in India or held an Indian passport, in which case you must declare it and will generally need renunciation documentation, since India does not permit dual citizenship.

Up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows 30 days with double entry. The business eVisa permits up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window, and the medical eVisa 60 days from first entry with triple entry.

No. Every routing involves at least two and often three connections, with total travel times of 28 to 36 hours. The US routings are the most common but require a US visa; Panama City and Mexico City plus a European hub are the alternatives.

It can. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June to November, and on a 30-hour itinerary with multiple connections a disrupted Belizean departure cascades badly. If you are travelling for fixed dates, build in real margin or travel between December and May.

Fees are set by nationality and duration, so the pricing panel on this page loads live figures for Belizean passport holders across all available options. You can compare 30-day, one-year and five-year prices side by side, and the amount shown is the full cost including our service fee.
