Important for Cameroonian citizens

India requires a valid yellow-fever vaccination certificate from travellers arriving from Cameroon. Without one you can be quarantined on arrival for up to six days, whatever visa you hold. The certificate is only valid from ten days after vaccination.

Overview

The India eVisa for Cameroonian citizens

Cameroon sends a substantial number of students to Indian universities — it is one of the larger African source countries for Indian higher education — and that education link is the defining feature of the relationship. Alongside it sit medical travel to India's private hospitals and a trade flow in pharmaceuticals, machinery and agricultural products.

Every Cameroonian citizen needs a visa granted before departure. There is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival. The eVisa is an electronic authorisation issued by the Government of India, linked to your passport number, with no stamp and no appointment.

Cameroonian passport holders receive up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa, and the five-year multiple-entry version is available. The single most important thing to get right on this route is the student visa distinction.

Eligibility

Do Cameroonian citizens need a visa for India?

Yes. India extends visa-free entry only to Nepal and Bhutan, and Visa on Arrival only to Japanese, South Korean and Emirati nationals. Cameroonian citizens must hold an approved visa before boarding, and because every routing involves a connection, the check often happens at Douala or Yaoundé.

Choose the category by purpose. Study at an Indian university requires a student visa from an Indian mission — not an eVisa, and this is the error that most often derails a Cameroonian trip. Treatment at an Indian hospital requires the medical eVisa, which allows accompanying family to travel as medical attendants. Business meetings, trade fairs and sourcing trips require the business eVisa. Tourism and visiting friends fall under the tourist eVisa.

To be unambiguous about the student point: an eVisa cannot be used for study, and it cannot be converted into a student visa once you are in India. Students who arrive on a tourist eVisa intending to regularise their status locally generally cannot, and may have to return home to apply properly.

Stay & validity

How long can Cameroonian citizens stay in India?

Cameroonian citizens are permitted up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows double entry, with its 30 days counted from your arrival date. The one-year and five-year versions are multiple-entry, and their validity begins on the date the Indian government grants the application.

For medical travel the medical eVisa is the better instrument: 60 days from first entry with triple entry, structured around treatment plus follow-up consultations, with medical attendant visas available for accompanying family.

For trade and sourcing the business eVisa allows up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window — double the tourist allowance. For buyers making several trips a year the five-year version is much better value.

The eVisa cannot be extended or converted from inside India, and it is valid only at designated airports and authorised seaports.

Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date

Recent passport-style photograph — square format, plain white background, full face visible, no shadows and no headwear other than for religious reasons

A valid credit or debit card to pay the government fee and service charge

Your return or onward ticket details, or at minimum your intended departure date

The address where you will be staying for your first night in India

Specific to Cameroonian passport holders

  • A regular Cameroonian passport valid at least six months beyond your arrival date, with two or more blank pages
  • A valid yellow-fever vaccination certificate — required for entry, and valid only from ten days after vaccination
  • Your full name exactly as printed on the passport, including all given names in the printed order
  • Accented characters handled consistently: your passport's machine-readable zone strips them
  • A square digital photograph on a plain white background with your full face visible
  • A clear colour scan of the passport bio-data page
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international payments, as the fee is charged in USD — the card need not belong to the traveller
  • Your first night's address in India and your onward or return flight details
  • For the medical eVisa: a letter from a hospital on India's recognised list, requested as early as possible
  • For the business eVisa: an invitation letter on the Indian company's letterhead with its address and a named contact

Processing times and when to apply

Standard processing takes 48 to 72 hours and express handling 24 to 48 hours. Both are business-day estimates, and Indian public holidays — numerous and often state-specific — extend them.

Apply at least two weeks before departure. The yellow-fever certificate needs ten days to become valid and is the real long lead item, so start that first. If you are travelling to study, the student visa takes considerably longer than an eVisa and must be started well ahead of term.

Mandatory from October 2025

You also need the India e-Arrival Card

Separate from your eVisa, every foreign national entering India must complete the digital e-Arrival Card before boarding. It replaces the old paper disembarkation form and is required on every single visit, whatever visa you hold.

Getting there

Flying to India from Cameroon

There is no nonstop service between Cameroon and India. Every routing involves at least one connection, most commonly through Addis Ababa, Dubai, Doha, Casablanca or Istanbul. Total journey times run 14 to 21 hours.

  • Douala (DLA) — Mumbai or Delhi via Addis Ababa with Ethiopian, often the best value
  • Douala (DLA) — Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru or Chennai via Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi
  • Yaoundé (NSI) — via Douala, Addis Ababa or Casablanca
  • Gulf routings open up Chennai and Kochi directly for South India
  • For university destinations, Delhi, Pune, Bengaluru and Hyderabad host most international students

Best time to go

When to travel from Cameroon

October to March is India's dry season and the most comfortable window for both leisure travel and medical treatment.

For students, the Indian academic year typically begins in July or August, which falls in the monsoon — travel is workable but expect heavy rain, and allow extra margin for regional flight and rail disruption on arrival.

For medical travel the Indian hospital calendar matters as much as the weather. Diwali and Holi affect staffing and elective scheduling. Avoid the northern plains in May and June, when temperatures exceed 45°C. India is 4.5 hours ahead of Cameroonian time.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Cameroonian citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Cameroon — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Trying to study in India on an eVisa

The most consequential error on this route by a wide margin, given how many Cameroonians study in India. An eVisa cannot be used for study and cannot be converted into a student visa once you are in the country. A student visa must be arranged through an Indian mission before travel, with your admission letter. Students who arrive on a tourist eVisa intending to sort it out locally generally cannot, and may have to return home.

Travelling without a valid yellow-fever certificate

India requires proof of yellow-fever vaccination from travellers arriving from Cameroon, and without it you can be quarantined on arrival for up to six days regardless of your visa. The certificate is only valid from ten days after vaccination.

Using a tourist eVisa for hospital treatment

The medical eVisa allows triple entry for follow-up consultations and lets accompanying family apply as medical attendants — structure a tourist eVisa does not provide. Indian hospitals increasingly ask which visa you hold.

Travelling on a tourist eVisa for sourcing trips

Inspecting goods, negotiating with suppliers and attending trade fairs are commercial activities requiring the business eVisa — which is also more generous at 180 days per visit against 90.

Payment card declined

The government fee is charged in US dollars and needs a card enabled for international transactions. The card does not have to belong to the traveller, so a family member or contact abroad can complete it.

Photo rejected on technical grounds

By far the most common cause of delay. The photograph must be square, on a plain white background, with your full face visible and no shadow behind your head. Cropped selfies and phone photos taken against a cream wall are routinely bounced back.

Passport scan unreadable

Glare across the machine-readable zone, a cut-off corner, or a scan where the passport number is blurred will stall the application. Photograph the page flat, in daylight, with no flash.

Applying too close to departure

The eVisa must be granted before you fly, and airlines check it at the gate. Applications submitted the night before a flight leave no room for a document re-upload.

Conditions

India eVisa rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by the Government of India and do not vary by nationality. They are worth reading before you book, because two of them — the port-of-entry rule and the restricted-areas rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

Your passport must be valid for six months

Validity is measured from your date of arrival in India, not from the date you apply. You also need at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

Enter through a designated eVisa port only

The India eVisa is accepted at India's designated eVisa airports and authorised seaports. It cannot be used to cross a land border, so overland arrivals from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh or Pakistan need a different visa.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own eVisa and their own passport, including infants and children. Children cannot be added to a parent's application.

Restricted and Protected Areas need a separate permit

An eVisa does not grant access to Protected Areas, Restricted Areas or Cantonment Areas. Parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep require a Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit in addition to your visa.

The eVisa is non-extendable and non-convertible

You cannot extend an eVisa from inside India or convert it into another visa category. If your plans change, you must leave and apply again.

Standard passports only

Diplomatic, official and service passports are not eligible for the eVisa route, and neither are international travel documents or refugee travel documents.

Consular services

Indian missions in Cameroon

The Indian mission serving Cameroon is not involved in eVisa applications, which are handled entirely online. It is, however, the only route to a student visa for study at an Indian university — a major stream from Cameroon — and it handles employment, journalism and research visas plus regular medical visas for extended treatment.
