Important for Malian citizens

India requires a valid yellow-fever vaccination certificate from travellers arriving from Mali. Without one you can be quarantined on arrival for up to six days, whatever visa you hold. The certificate is valid only from ten days after vaccination.

Overview

The India eVisa for Malian citizens

Mali is one of Africa's largest cotton producers, and India is among its more important buyers — Indian spinning mills in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu source West African cotton in volume. That trade drives most Malian commercial travel to India, alongside a steady flow of medical travel and students taking degrees at Indian universities.

Mali is landlocked and Bamako has limited long-haul service, so every routing to India involves at least one connection, usually through Casablanca, Istanbul or Addis Ababa.

Every Malian citizen needs a visa granted before departure. There is no visa-free entry and no visa on arrival. The eVisa is an electronic authorisation issued by the Government of India, linked to your passport number, with no stamp and no appointment. Malian passport holders receive up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa.

Eligibility

Do Malian citizens need a visa for India?

Yes. India extends visa-free entry only to Nepal and Bhutan, and Visa on Arrival only to Japanese, South Korean and Emirati nationals. Malian citizens must hold an approved visa before boarding, and because every routing involves a connection, the check often happens at Bamako.

Choose the category by purpose. Cotton-trade meetings, mill visits, supplier audits and trade fairs require the business eVisa. Treatment at an Indian hospital requires the medical eVisa, which allows accompanying family to travel as medical attendants. Tourism and visiting friends fall under the tourist eVisa. Employment, journalism, academic research and long-term study are outside the eVisa scheme and need a regular visa from an Indian mission.

The student route is well used from Mali and worth being clear about: an eVisa cannot be used for study and cannot be converted into a student visa once you are in India.

Stay & validity

How long can Malian citizens stay in India?

Malian citizens are permitted up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows double entry, with its 30 days counted from your arrival date. The one-year and five-year versions are multiple-entry, and their validity begins on the date the Indian government grants the application.

For the cotton trade the business eVisa is the right instrument, allowing up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window — double the tourist allowance. For traders making several trips a year the five-year version is much better value.

For medical travel the medical eVisa gives 60 days from first entry with triple entry, with medical attendant visas available for accompanying family.

The eVisa cannot be extended or converted from inside India, and it is valid only at designated airports and authorised seaports.

Requirements

India eVisa requirements for Malian citizens

Everything Malian passport holders need before starting an application. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality or visa type.

Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date

Recent passport-style photograph — square format, plain white background, full face visible, no shadows and no headwear other than for religious reasons

A valid credit or debit card to pay the government fee and service charge

Your return or onward ticket details, or at minimum your intended departure date

The address where you will be staying for your first night in India

Specific to Malian passport holders

  • A regular Malian passport valid at least six months beyond your arrival date, with two or more blank pages
  • A valid yellow-fever vaccination certificate — required for entry, and valid only from ten days after vaccination
  • Your full name exactly as printed on the passport, including all given names in the printed order
  • Accented characters handled consistently: your passport's machine-readable zone strips them
  • A square digital photograph on a plain white background with your full face visible
  • A clear colour scan of the passport bio-data page
  • A credit or debit card enabled for international payments, as the fee is charged in USD — the card need not belong to the traveller
  • Your first night's address in India and your onward or return flight details
  • For the business eVisa: an invitation letter on the Indian company's letterhead with its address and a named contact
  • For the medical eVisa: a letter from a hospital on India's recognised list

Ready to travel

Processing times and when to apply

Standard processing takes 48 to 72 hours and express handling 24 to 48 hours. Both are business-day estimates, and Indian public holidays — numerous and often state-specific — extend them.

Apply at least two weeks before departure. The yellow-fever certificate needs ten days to become valid and is the real long lead item, so start that first. For medical travel, request the hospital letter as soon as your appointment is confirmed.

Mandatory from October 2025

You also need the India e-Arrival Card

Separate from your eVisa, every foreign national entering India must complete the digital e-Arrival Card before boarding. It replaces the old paper disembarkation form and is required on every single visit, whatever visa you hold.

Getting there

Flying to India from Mali

Mali is landlocked and Bamako has limited long-haul service. Every routing to India involves at least one connection, most commonly through Casablanca, Istanbul or Addis Ababa. Total journey times run 15 to 22 hours.

  • Bamako (BKO) — Mumbai or Delhi via Addis Ababa with Ethiopian, often the best value
  • Bamako (BKO) — Delhi via Casablanca or Istanbul
  • Bamako (BKO) — Mumbai, Delhi or Bengaluru via Dubai, Doha or Abu Dhabi
  • For the cotton trade, Ahmedabad serves Gujarat's mills and Coimbatore serves Tamil Nadu's, both reachable via Delhi or Mumbai
  • For medical treatment, Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai have the largest international private hospital networks
15–22 hours total, with one or two connections

Best time to go

When to travel from Mali

October to March is India's dry season and the most comfortable window for both business and medical travel.

For the cotton trade, the Indian buying season runs from the autumn harvest through the winter, which aligns well with the comfortable months. Avoid the Diwali period, when Indian industry closes for several days across many states.

Avoid Gujarat and the northern plains in May and June, when temperatures exceed 43°C. The monsoon from June to September disrupts regional flights and road transport. India is 5.5 hours ahead of Malian time.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Malian citizens make

Refusals are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on applications from Mali — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Travelling without a valid yellow-fever certificate

The most consequential error on this route. India requires proof of yellow-fever vaccination from travellers arriving from Mali, and without it you can be quarantined on arrival for up to six days regardless of your visa. The certificate is only valid from ten days after vaccination.

Travelling on a tourist eVisa for cotton-trade business

Visiting Indian spinning mills, negotiating with buyers and attending trade fairs are commercial activities requiring the business eVisa — which is also more generous, at 180 days per visit against 90.

Trying to study in India on an eVisa

A well-used route from Mali. Study at an Indian university requires a student visa arranged through an Indian mission before travel, with your admission letter, and an eVisa cannot be converted into one once you are in India.

Using a tourist eVisa for hospital treatment

The medical eVisa allows triple entry for follow-up consultations and lets accompanying family apply as medical attendants. Indian hospitals increasingly ask which visa you hold.

Payment card declined

The government fee is charged in US dollars and needs a card enabled for international transactions. The card does not have to belong to the traveller, so a business contact abroad can complete it.

Photo rejected on technical grounds

By far the most common cause of delay. The photograph must be square, on a plain white background, with your full face visible and no shadow behind your head. Cropped selfies and phone photos taken against a cream wall are routinely bounced back.

Passport scan unreadable

Glare across the machine-readable zone, a cut-off corner, or a scan where the passport number is blurred will stall the application. Photograph the page flat, in daylight, with no flash.

Applying too close to departure

The eVisa must be granted before you fly, and airlines check it at the gate. Applications submitted the night before a flight leave no room for a document re-upload.

Conditions

India eVisa rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by the Government of India and do not vary by nationality. They are worth reading before you book, because two of them — the port-of-entry rule and the restricted-areas rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

Your passport must be valid for six months

Validity is measured from your date of arrival in India, not from the date you apply. You also need at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

Enter through a designated eVisa port only

The India eVisa is accepted at India's designated eVisa airports and authorised seaports. It cannot be used to cross a land border, so overland arrivals from Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh or Pakistan need a different visa.

One application per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own eVisa and their own passport, including infants and children. Children cannot be added to a parent's application.

Restricted and Protected Areas need a separate permit

An eVisa does not grant access to Protected Areas, Restricted Areas or Cantonment Areas. Parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep require a Protected Area Permit or Restricted Area Permit in addition to your visa.

The eVisa is non-extendable and non-convertible

You cannot extend an eVisa from inside India or convert it into another visa category. If your plans change, you must leave and apply again.

Standard passports only

Diplomatic, official and service passports are not eligible for the eVisa route, and neither are international travel documents or refugee travel documents.

Consular services

Indian missions in Mali

The Indian mission serving Mali is not involved in eVisa applications, which are handled entirely online. It covers what the eVisa cannot: student visas, employment, journalism and research visas, regular medical visas for extended treatment, and OCI matters. Some West African states are served under concurrent accreditation from a neighbouring country, so confirm coverage if you need consular help.

Up to 90 days per visit on the tourist eVisa. The 30-day version allows 30 days with double entry. The business eVisa permits up to 180 days per visit within a one-year multiple-entry window, and the medical eVisa 60 days from first entry with triple entry.
