Overview
Spanish travel to New Zealand has grown quickly over the last decade, driven partly by the working holiday agreement and partly by a broader appetite for long-haul adventure travel. Spanish visitors are among the more likely nationalities to be in New Zealand for several months rather than a couple of weeks, and to be combining it with Australia or Southeast Asia.
There is no nonstop flight from Spain. Madrid and Barcelona both connect through Dubai, Doha and the Asian hubs, with total journey times of roughly 28 to 32 hours — among the longest journeys to New Zealand from anywhere in Europe.
Spain is on New Zealand's visa waiver list, so no visitor visa is needed and there is no appointment to book at the Embassy in Madrid. Since October 2019 every traveller needs an NZeTA — an online authorisation linked to your passport number and checked by the airline at Barajas or El Prat before departure.
At a glance
Eligibility
No visa, but an NZeTA is required. Spanish citizens can enter New Zealand for tourism, visiting friends and relatives, business meetings, conferences or transit for up to 90 days under the visa waiver. The NZeTA is the pre-screening step that replaced the visitor visa for waiver nationalities.
The waiver covers visiting rather than working. Spain has a Working Holiday agreement with New Zealand for applicants aged 18 to 30, granting twelve months with the right to work, subject to an annual quota that is typically taken up quickly. It is a separate visa applied for before departure and cannot be arranged from an NZeTA after arrival.
Eligibility follows the passport rather than residence. Residents of Spain travelling on Moroccan, Colombian, Venezuelan, Ecuadorian or Peruvian passports are not covered by the Spanish waiver. Several of those nationalities appear on New Zealand's transit waiver list, which permits transit through Auckland but not a visit — for that they need a Visitor Visa. Spanish citizens by naturalisation are fully covered on the Spanish passport.
Stay & validity
Spanish passport holders may stay up to 90 days per visit. The NZeTA lasts two years from approval and permits unlimited entries in that period, so the 90-day cap applies to each stay rather than to a cumulative annual figure.
That limit is worth planning around for Spanish travellers specifically, because so many combine New Zealand with a longer Oceania trip. Time spent in Australia or the Pacific in between does not extend the New Zealand allowance — each entry restarts a 90-day clock, but Immigration New Zealand looks at the overall pattern and repeated back-to-back stays attract scrutiny.
The authorisation is bound to a single passport number for two years. Spanish passports run for ten years for adults over thirty, five for ages five to thirty, and two for under-fives, so a renewal inside the window is likely for younger travellers and families. There is no transfer process.
New Zealand requires three months of passport validity beyond your departure from the country. Spanish itineraries transiting Dubai, Doha or Singapore may face a six-month rule in the transit country, so plan against the strictest requirement on the whole journey.

Requirements
Everything Spanish passport holders need before starting a request. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.
Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date
Recent passport-style photograph — full face visible against a plain light background, taken within the last six months, no headwear other than for religious reasons
A valid email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling
A credit or debit card to pay the NZeTA request fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy together
Your onward or return ticket details — border officers can ask to see evidence that you intend to leave
Simple process
Four steps, entirely online, with our team checking every field before anything reaches Immigration New Zealand.
Enter your passport details exactly as printed, answer the health and character questions, and upload your photo. Most people finish in under ten minutes.
Our team checks your photo dimensions, passport number, name spelling and declarations before anything is submitted to Immigration New Zealand.
Your request goes to Immigration New Zealand together with the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, and we track it until a decision is issued.
There is no sticker or label — the authorisation is held electronically against your passport number. We explain exactly what to show at check-in.
Spanish requests are approved automatically in the large majority of cases, often within minutes. Immigration New Zealand advises allowing up to 72 hours because a proportion go to an officer for manual assessment, usually over a photograph the automated check cannot read.
Apply at least a week before departure. Spanish routings are among the longest to New Zealand and always involve at least one connection, so a problem found at Barajas or El Prat ends the whole itinerary rather than one sector. Requesting the NZeTA a month before travel is the practical balance between safety margin and not burning validity you may want later.
Getting there
There is no nonstop service from Spain to New Zealand, and the journey is among the longest in Europe at roughly 28 to 32 hours. Madrid and Barcelona connect through the Gulf carriers and the Asian hubs, with Emirates and Qatar Airways carrying most of the traffic.
Best time to go
New Zealand's summer of December to February is the reverse of Spain's winter and gives the best conditions for walking, kayaking and coastal touring. It is peak season, overlapping the New Zealand school holidays, so Queenstown, the Abel Tasman and the Great Walk huts are booked out months ahead.
The Spanish August holiday falls in the New Zealand winter. It is a good ski season and the country is quiet, but the days are short and much of the high country that draws Spanish trekkers is closed. If your dates are fixed to August, plan a winter itinerary rather than expecting a summer one.
March to May is the best-value window — settled autumn weather, warm sea into March, autumn colour in Central Otago by April, and far fewer visitors. September to November is the spring equivalent. New Zealand is 10 to 12 hours ahead of Spain depending on daylight saving in both, so you arrive two calendar days after leaving and the return feels like the same day.
Avoid these
Declines are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on requests from Spain — we check for every one of them before submitting.
Spanish passports carry two surnames, and the NZeTA must match the passport exactly. Entering only the paternal surname, or reversing the order, produces a mismatch that airline systems flag at check-in. Copy the surname field from the machine-readable zone character for character.
Spain's Working Holiday quota with New Zealand fills quickly, and travellers who miss it sometimes plan to travel anyway and work informally. That is a breach of the visitor conditions, can result in removal and a re-entry ban, and is checked more actively in seasonal work regions like Marlborough and Central Otago.
Combining Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific over five or six months is a common Spanish itinerary. Each New Zealand entry starts a fresh 90 days, but repeated long back-to-back stays are assessed as a pattern, and a border officer can decline entry if the overall picture looks like living there rather than visiting.
Spain has a large Latin American resident population, and several of those nationalities — Colombian, Ecuadorian, Peruvian, Venezuelan and Bolivian among them — appear only on New Zealand's transit waiver list. That permits a layover at Auckland, not a visit. A Spanish residence permit does not change this.
Spanish passports for those aged five to thirty run for five years, so young travellers who visit New Zealand twice within an NZeTA's two-year life are quite likely to have renewed in between. The authorisation does not follow the new passport number.
Passport number mistyped
By far the most common problem. The authorisation is attached to the number you enter, so a single wrong character produces an NZeTA that does not exist as far as the airline is concerned.
An undeclared conviction
Immigration New Zealand asks about convictions, deportations and previous refusals. Undisclosed history found later is treated far more seriously than the original offence.
A photograph that fails the check
Shadows across the face, glasses, a busy background or a cropped chin all cause the automated check to reject an image, which turns an instant approval into a manual review.
Conditions
These conditions are set by Immigration New Zealand and do not vary by nationality. Two of them — the passport-linking rule and the cruise rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.
Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you entered. There is no label in your passport and nothing to print for immigration. If you renew or replace that passport, the NZeTA does not transfer — you must request a new one.
Every person travelling needs their own NZeTA, including newborns and children. A child cannot be added to a parent's request, and each one needs their own valid passport.
An approved NZeTA lasts two years from the date it is issued and can be used for any number of trips in that period, provided your passport remains valid. It cannot be extended — when it expires you simply request a new one.
The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy funds conservation and tourism infrastructure and is charged alongside the NZeTA request. It currently stands at NZD 100 and is payable once per NZeTA, not once per trip.
An NZeTA lets you board. The decision to admit you is made by a border officer at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown, who can ask about your funds, your accommodation and your intended departure.
Since October 2019 every cruise passenger arriving in New Zealand by sea needs an NZeTA or a visa, regardless of nationality — including passengers whose nationality would otherwise be exempt.
Consular services
The Embassy in Madrid has no role in an NZeTA request, which is completed online with no appointment and no passport submission. It handles work visas, student visas, residence applications and consular assistance for New Zealanders in Spain. Working Holiday Visa applications are also submitted online through Immigration New Zealand.
FAQs
The questions Spanish passport holders ask most often about travelling to New Zealand.
No visitor visa is required — Spain is on New Zealand's visa waiver list. You do need an NZeTA, requested online before departure and checked by the airline at Spanish check-in. It covers tourism, family visits, business meetings and transit for stays of up to 90 days.
Up to 90 days per visit. The NZeTA is valid for two years and allows unlimited entries in that period, but each individual stay is capped at 90 days. Only British citizens receive a longer allowance.
Enter both, in the exact order and spelling shown in the machine-readable zone at the bottom of your passport photo page. Omitting the second surname or reversing the order is one of the most common causes of a mismatch between the NZeTA and the passport the airline scans.
The cost combines the government request fee with the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, currently NZD 100, both charged together. The pricing panel on this page loads the live all-in figure for Spanish passport holders including our service fee.
No. Spanish citizens aged 18 to 30 can apply for the Working Holiday Scheme, which grants twelve months with the right to work, but it is quota-limited and must be approved before you travel. An NZeTA confers no right to work.
Not for a visit. Colombia is on New Zealand's transit waiver list, which allows a layover at Auckland Airport but not entry to the country. To visit New Zealand you would need a Visitor Visa applied for well in advance. A Spanish residence permit does not change your position with Immigration New Zealand.
It is the New Zealand winter. Skiing at Queenstown and Wanaka is good and the country is quiet, but the Great Walks become alpine routes and daylight is short. If your holiday dates are fixed to August, plan a winter trip. February to April gives much better conditions if you have flexibility.
Yes, every traveller does, including infants. Each child needs their own valid Spanish passport and their own request. Spanish passports for under-fives are valid for only two years, so check expiry dates carefully before requesting.
Your nationality is already set to Spain. Complete the form in under ten minutes, and our team will check every detail before it reaches Immigration New Zealand.
