Overview

The New Zealand eTA for Swiss citizens

Switzerland punches far above its size in New Zealand visitor numbers. The two countries share an obvious affinity — mountains, dairy farming, hiking culture — and Swiss travellers arrive with alpine experience and a strong preference for independent travel, long stays and the Southern Alps.

Zurich and Geneva both connect to New Zealand through the Gulf and Asian hubs, with total journey times of roughly 26 to 30 hours. There is no nonstop option, and there never has been.

Switzerland is on New Zealand's visa waiver list, so there is no visitor visa and no appointment at the Embassy in Bern. Since October 2019, though, every traveller needs an NZeTA — an online authorisation linked to your passport number and checked by the airline before departure.

Eligibility

Do Swiss citizens need a visa for New Zealand?

No visa, but an NZeTA is required. Swiss citizens can enter New Zealand for tourism, visiting family, business meetings, conferences or transit for up to 90 days under the visa waiver.

Switzerland has a Working Holiday arrangement with New Zealand for applicants aged 18 to 30, granting twelve months with the right to work. It is a separate visa applied for before departure and cannot be created from an NZeTA once you have arrived.

Eligibility follows the passport rather than residence. Switzerland has a very large foreign resident population, and a resident holding a Kosovan, Serbian, Turkish, Sri Lankan or Eritrean passport is not covered by the Swiss waiver — they need a New Zealand Visitor Visa applied for weeks in advance. A C permit or B permit carries no weight with Immigration New Zealand.

Stay & validity

How long can Swiss citizens stay in New Zealand?

Swiss passport holders may stay up to 90 days per visit. The NZeTA is valid for two years from approval and permits unlimited entries in that window, so the 90-day limit applies to each individual stay.

Swiss trips to New Zealand tend to be long — a full trekking season or a combined Australia and New Zealand itinerary can approach the ceiling. Extensions require a Visitor Visa applied for from inside New Zealand before your permission expires.

The authorisation is bound to a single passport number for two years. Swiss passports run for ten years for adults and five for children, so families travelling twice within the window may hit a renewal, which voids the NZeTA with no transfer available.

New Zealand requires three months of passport validity beyond your departure. Swiss routings through Dubai, Doha or Singapore may face a six-month rule in the transit country, so plan against the strictest requirement on the route.

Requirements

New Zealand eTA requirements for Swiss citizens

Everything Swiss passport holders need before starting a request. The first five items apply to every applicant; the rest are specific to your nationality.

Passport bio-data page — a clear colour scan or photo showing your photograph, full name, date of birth, passport number and expiry date

Recent passport-style photograph — full face visible against a plain light background, taken within the last six months, no headwear other than for religious reasons

A valid email address, which is where the approval is sent and which you should keep accessible while travelling

A credit or debit card to pay the NZeTA request fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy together

Your onward or return ticket details — border officers can ask to see evidence that you intend to leave

Specific to Swiss passport holders

  • A valid Swiss passport with at least three months of validity beyond your planned departure from New Zealand
  • Your name entered exactly as printed, with umlauts rendered as the machine-readable zone shows them
  • A recent colour photograph with your full face visible against a plain light background
  • A credit or debit card to pay the request fee and the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy together
  • An email address you can access while travelling, since the approval is delivered there only
  • Truthful answers to the character questions, covering convictions carrying five years or more at any time and convictions in the last ten years carrying twelve months or more
  • Disclosure of any deportation, removal or refusal of entry from any country
  • Onward or return travel details, which border officers at Auckland can ask to see
  • Swiss residents holding a non-EU passport must apply on their own nationality — a B or C permit does not make you eligible
  • Every traveller needs their own NZeTA, including children and infants

Processing times and when to apply

Swiss requests are approved automatically in the large majority of cases, often within minutes. Immigration New Zealand advises allowing up to 72 hours because a minority are referred to an officer, generally over a photograph the automated check rejects.

Apply at least a week before departure, ideally a month out. Swiss travellers often book New Zealand trips a long way ahead; requesting the NZeTA a year in advance simply spends validity you may want for a second visit.

Getting there

Flying to New Zealand from Switzerland

There is no nonstop service from Switzerland to New Zealand. Zurich and Geneva connect through Dubai, Doha, Singapore and Hong Kong, with total journey times of around 26 to 30 hours.

  • Zurich (ZRH) via Dubai or Doha — Emirates and Qatar Airways to Auckland
  • Zurich via Singapore — Singapore Airlines to Auckland or Christchurch, useful for a South Island start
  • Geneva (GVA) via Doha or Dubai — the standard routing from Romandy
  • Zurich via Hong Kong — Cathay Pacific onward to Auckland
  • Basel and Bern — rail to Zurich or Geneva for the long-haul departure

Best time to go

When to travel from Switzerland

New Zealand's summer of December to February is the trekking and climbing season in the Southern Alps, and the inverse of the Swiss winter. It is peak season, so Great Walk huts and Queenstown accommodation are booked out months in advance.

February to April is the best-value window — settled autumn weather, thinning crowds and Central Otago colour by April. October and November are the spring equivalent, with long daylight returning to Fiordland.

The Swiss summer of July and August falls in the New Zealand winter. Ski touring and resort skiing are both good at Queenstown and Wanaka, but the Southern Alps have more volatile weather and thinner hut infrastructure than Swiss mountaineers are used to. New Zealand is 10 to 12 hours ahead of Switzerland depending on daylight saving.

Avoid these

Common mistakes Swiss citizens make

Declines are rare, and almost always technical rather than substantive. These are the problems that come up most often on requests from Switzerland — we check for every one of them before submitting.

Swiss residents assuming the waiver covers them

Switzerland has one of Europe's largest foreign-resident populations. Eligibility follows the passport, so a resident on a Kosovan, Serbian, Turkish or Sri Lankan passport needs a New Zealand Visitor Visa taking weeks. A C permit does not change this.

Umlauts entered as printed

The machine-readable zone renders ü as UE, ö as OE and ä as AE. The NZeTA must match that version, not the accented form on the printed page, because the airline system compares against the encoded name.

Arriving on an NZeTA intending to work

The Working Holiday Scheme must be granted before departure. Working on a visitor entry — including seasonal work on Central Otago orchards, a popular route for young Swiss travellers — is a breach that can result in removal.

Assuming Southern Alps conditions match the Alps

Not an immigration matter, but the most common practical error. New Zealand's mountains have faster weather changes, fewer staffed huts and a much thinner rescue network. Plan more conservatively than you would at home.

Passport number mistyped

By far the most common problem. The authorisation is attached to the number you enter, so a single wrong character produces an NZeTA that does not exist as far as the airline is concerned.

An undeclared conviction

Immigration New Zealand asks about convictions, deportations and previous refusals. Undisclosed history found later is treated far more seriously than the original offence.

A photograph that fails the check

Shadows across the face, glasses, a busy background or a cropped chin all cause the automated check to reject an image, which turns an instant approval into a manual review.

Conditions

NZeTA rules that apply to every traveller

These conditions are set by Immigration New Zealand and do not vary by nationality. Two of them — the passport-linking rule and the cruise rule — catch out a lot of otherwise well-planned trips.

The NZeTA is linked to one passport

Your authorisation is held electronically against the passport number you entered. There is no label in your passport and nothing to print for immigration. If you renew or replace that passport, the NZeTA does not transfer — you must request a new one.

One request per traveller

Every person travelling needs their own NZeTA, including newborns and children. A child cannot be added to a parent's request, and each one needs their own valid passport.

Valid for two years, multiple entry

An approved NZeTA lasts two years from the date it is issued and can be used for any number of trips in that period, provided your passport remains valid. It cannot be extended — when it expires you simply request a new one.

The IVL is paid at the same time

The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy funds conservation and tourism infrastructure and is charged alongside the NZeTA request. It currently stands at NZD 100 and is payable once per NZeTA, not once per trip.

It is permission to travel, not a guarantee of entry

An NZeTA lets you board. The decision to admit you is made by a border officer at Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch or Queenstown, who can ask about your funds, your accommodation and your intended departure.

Cruise arrivals need one too

Since October 2019 every cruise passenger arriving in New Zealand by sea needs an NZeTA or a visa, regardless of nationality — including passengers whose nationality would otherwise be exempt.

Consular services

New Zealand missions in Switzerland

The Embassy in Bern has no role in an NZeTA request, which is completed online with no appointment and no passport submission. It handles work visas, student visas, residence applications and consular services for New Zealanders in Switzerland. The cost is the government request fee plus the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, currently NZD 100, both charged together. The pricing panel on this page loads the live all-in figure for Swiss passport holders including our service fee.

No. Swiss citizens aged 18 to 30 can apply for the Working Holiday Scheme, giving twelve months with the right to work, but it is a separate visa that must be approved before you travel.
